Minnie Sanders
DEVILS LAKE -- Minnie Sanders, 86, Devils Lake, formerly of Starkweather, N.D., died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake, where she had lived since 1999.
Minnie A. Hunt was born Sept. 6, 1913, the daughter of James and Julia (Anderson) Hunt, near Starkweather, where she attended school. She married
Clarence Sanders on Sept. 27, 1930, in Devils Lake. They lived in Starkweather. Clarence Sanders died Dec. 16, 1972. She was employed by the KB Cafe in Starkweather. She moved to Devils Lake in 1992.
She is survived by a son, Clarence (Suzanne), Walhalla, S.C.; a grandson; two great-granddaughters; and a brother, Clarence, California.
She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Services: 9: 30 a.m. Monday, United Methodist Church, Starkweather.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, N.D., and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Methodist Cemetery, Starkweather.
Donald Johnson
Donald Johnson, 59, 208 2nd St. N.W., died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at home.
Donald Lee Johnson was born Nov. 2, 1940, the son of Edwin and Hannah (O'Neil) Johnson, in Grand Forks. He attended school in East Grand Forks. He was employed by Allard's Farms, East Grand Forks, retiring in 1992.
He is survived by a brother, Gary, Spokane, Wash.; and a sister, Cynthia (Al) Wentz, Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Joan Brage.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks (Norman, East Grand Forks).
Clarence Hagen
CROOKSTON -- Clarence Hagen, 91, Crookston, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, in Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, where he had lived since 1999.
Clarence Hagen was born Aug. 29, 1908, the son of Iver and Caroline Hagen, in Sundal, Minn., where he attended school. He married
Mabel Hassel on Nov. 29, 1929, in Bear Park, Minn. They farmed in the McIntosh and Winger area. Mabel Hagen died in 1978. He lived in McIntosh and later Erskine, Minn. He worked as a carpenter.
He is survived by a daughter, Dawna (Charles) McMillan, Red Wing, Minn.; sons, Russell (Nancy) and Dennis (Claudia), Moorhead, and James, Crookston; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sons, Gordon, Marvin, and Curtis; daughter-in-law, Penne Hagen; eight brothers; and a sister.
Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, McIntosh.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Our Saviors Lutheran Cemetery
(Carlin-Hoialmen, McIntosh).
Raymond Peterson
Raymond "Red" Peterson, 85, rural East Grand Forks, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, in Warren (Minn.) Hospital.
Raymond Peterson was born July 13, 1914, the son of Alfred and Minnie (Gerstner) Peterson, in East Grand Forks, where he graduated from high school in 1931. He farmed near East Grand Forks and owned Gurnsey dairy cattle. He later worked for Gorman Johnson Farms.
He is survived by sons, James (Pam), East Grand Forks, William (Becky), Grand Forks, Robert (Patty), East Grand Forks, Randy, Seattle, Eric (Diane), Santa Monica, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Pat Ambers.
Services: 2: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Stennes Funeral Chapel, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Bethany Lutheran Cemetery.
Lillian Jeffrey
Lillian Jeffrey, 84, 2413 27th Ave. S., died Sunday, July 9, 2000, in Valley Eldercare, Grand Forks.
Lillian Miller was born May 8, 1916, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Sherette) Miller, in East Grand Forks, where she attended school. She married
Vincent Jeffrey on May 20, 1934, in East Grand Forks.
She is survived by sons, David and Kevin, both of Grand Forks; a daughter, Joann Nikle, Grand Forks; a daughter-in-law, Martha Jeffrey, East Grand Forks; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Cariveau, Eau Claire, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Ron; brothers, Joseph, James and George; and a sister, Louise Deziel.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks (Stennes, East Grand Forks).
Raymond Austad
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Raymond Austad, 69, Thief River Falls, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at home.
Iver Raymond Austad was born Nov. 16, 1930, the son of Iver and Dena (Olson) Austad, in Reiner Township, Pennington County, Minn. He attended school in Thief River Falls. He joined the U.S. Army on Jan. 8, 1949, and transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves on Jan. 6, 1950. He served in the Korean War. He was awarded several medals, including the Purple Heart. He was discharged on Nov. 16, 1953. He worked for several construction companies. He also worked with his dad. He later worked for Carter-Day, Minneapolis. He returned in 1979 to Thief River Falls, where he worked as a maintenance engineer at Northland College. In 1992, he retired. He married
Shirley Efteland in 1973. He married
Ruth Bernhardson on Dec. 12, 1980, in Warren, Minn.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Dawn (Jeff) Benke, Newfolden, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Linda (Tom) Kastl, Northwest Angle, Minn.; a stepson, Mark (Deb) Bernhardson, Cloquet, Minn.; nine grandchildren; sisters, Barbara (Oral) Runum and Agnes Dalzell, both of Stanley, N.D., Sylvia (Ray) Ranum, Maplewood, Minn., Irene (Dick) Pace, Carson City, Nev., Mildred Austad, Moorhead, Dagney Fredrickson, Spring Lake Park, Minn., and Virginia (Ernie) Wappula, Hugo, Minn.; and brothers, Daniel, Thief River Falls and Harold (Doris), Hudson, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Donald and Alan, and an infant; and a sister in infancy.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Evangelical Free Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Rocksbury Township, Pennington County, Minn.
