Tenny Mortensen
CROOKSTON -- Tenny N. Mortensen, 83, Crookston, died Friday, July 14, 2000, in Riverview Nursing Home, Crookston, where he had lived since January 2000.
Tenny Norman Mortensen was born Feb. 19, 1917, the son of John and Joren (Austad) Mortensen, in Thompson, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Sletten Township, Polk County, Minn. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He married
Alice Nyland on Jan. 31, 1951. They lived on the family farm. After retiring, they moved to Mesa, Ariz. Alice Mortensen died in 1990. He moved back to Crookston.
He is survived by a stepson, Harvey (Elaine) Solberg, Babbitt, Minn.; six stepgrandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Jane Peitilainen and Irma Nordstron, both of Minneapolis, Elinore Van Slyke, Redding, Calif., Irene (Bill) Helsel, Gilbert, Minn., and Doris (Jerome) Normandin, Crookston.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Aileen Mortensen and Christine Nefzger.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Winger, Minn.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Sand Hill Lutheran Cemetery, Winger.
Opal Gerrard
FOREST RIVER, N.D. -- Opal Gerrard, 69, Forest River, died Friday, July 14, 2000, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Opal Mae Belt was born June 27, 1931, the daughter of Callie and Elizabeth (Smerer) Belt, in Rock Lake, N.D., where she attended school. She married
Wayne Gerrard on Sept. 2, 1949, in Cando, N.D. They moved to the Johnstown-Gilby, N.D., area. They moved to Forest River in 1966, to Stuart, Fla., in 1971, and then back to Forest River.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Yvonne (Mel) Armbrust, Forest River; sons, Ken, Forest River, Stuart, Florida and Greg, El Paso, Texas; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Allen (Connie) Booth, Rolla, N.D.; and sisters, Yvonne (Wiley) Purcell, Decatur, Ill., and Jan (Roy) Curtis, Sarles, N.D.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Doris; and a stepfather, Clarence Booth.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Forest River Community Church.
Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Henriksen-Kamrowski Funeral Home, Grafton, N.D., and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Forest River Cemetery.
Vernon Basol
PORTLAND, N.D. -- Vernon Basol, 73, Portland, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at home.
Vernon Basol was born May 13, 1927, the son of John and Louise (Nelson) Basol, in Portland, where he attended school. He farmed with and took care of his parents. He later took over the farm.
He is survived by a brother, Gehard (Beverly), Cooperstown, N.D.; sisters, Lillian Jemtrud and Gina (Gilmar) Grandalen, both of Portland, and Verna (Leon) Eckman and Norma (Julian) Olson, both of Breckenridge, Minn.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Alvin, Norman and Leonard.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Little Forks Lutheran Church, Portland.
Visitation: 4 to 7: 30 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, N.D.
Burial: Church cemetery.
Irene Skjelset
COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- Irene Skjelset, 82, Cooperstown, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, in Griggs County Nursing Home, Cooperstown, where she had lived since 1998.
Irene Johnson was born Feb. 17, 1918, in Cooperstown, where she graduated from high school in 1937. She married
Harold Cowdrey in 1938. She married
Marvin Skjelset on Sept. 15, 1946. They farmed near Revere, N.D., until retiring in Cooperstown in 1979. Marvin Skjelset died in 1995.
She is survived by a son, Gary (Diane), Cooperstown; a grandson; and a great-grandson.
Services: Private family services are planned.
Burial: Cooperstown Cemetery
(Quam-Plaisted-Cushman, Cooperstown).
Doris Sofas
Doris A. Sofas, 79, Santa Barbara, Calif., formerly of Grand Forks, died May 27, 2000, in Santa Barbara.
Doris Aileen Hewitt was born Jan. 15, 1921, the daughter of Harry and Gertrude (Schmitz) Hewitt, in Minto, N.D. She graduated from UND in 1942. She married
Stanley Sofas in 1943, in Grand Forks. They lived in Grand Forks from 1946 to 1955. She was employed by the Registrar's Office at UND from 1951 to 1955.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Janet (Michael) McGill, Dallas, and Gail (Kenneth) Smith, Fountain Valley, Calif.; sisters, Harriet Kenne, Pasadena, Calif., Jean Ford, Itaska, Calif., Beth Kaertz, Rancho, Calif., and Merrie Ellen Bergeth, Park Rapids, Minn.; and a brother, John, Long Beach Calif.
Clemens Meldahl
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Clemens M. Meldahl, 84, Bradenton, died May 14, 2000, at his son's home in Longboat Key, Fla.
Clemens M. Meldahl was born June 27, 1915, the son of Carl and Katherine (Thompson) Meldahl Sr., in Beaver Creek, N.D. He retired to Florida in 1972 from Continental Can Co. as an industrial engineer.
He is survived by sons, Craig, Longboat Key, Richard, Woodstock, Ill., and Peter, Kaneohe, Hawaii; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nora Gronhovd, Hatton, N.D.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Carl Marvin, Elmer, Julian, Alvin, Carl Anton, and William; and sisters, Mina Bjerke, Magda Kirk and Hilda Bjerke.
Services: Private services will be held in September.
Kirk Heupel
BISMARCK -- Kirk Heupel, 47, Bismarck, died of cancer Saturday, July 22, 2000, at a local hospital.
Kirk Douglas Heupel was born Oct. 5, 1952, the son of Wilbert and Lorraine (Krein) Heupel, in Bismarck, where he graduated from high school in 1971. He served in the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he attended Bismarck State College. He married
Fammie Benz on April 23, 1977. He worked for OMF, DSK Enterprises and since 1983, at the Bismarck Post Office.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Dustin and Tyler; and a daughter, Krystle, all at home; and a sister, Brenda (Bob) Carlsen, Fertile, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, United Church of Christ, Bismarck.
Visitation: Noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.
Burial: North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan, N.D.
