Laura Espejo
FARGO -- Laura Espejo, 39, Fargo, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at home.
Laura Christenson was born March 8, 1961, the daughter of Boyd and Marlene Christenson, in Cavalier, N.D. She moved with her family to Fargo in 1964. She graduated from high school in 1979. She attended Santa Cruz, Bolivia, as a Rotary International Exchange student. She attended North Dakota State University from 1980 to 1982. She received an associate degree in nursing and became a registered nurse. She moved to Lima, Peru. She married
Napoleon Espejo on Aug. 13, 1983, in Chimbote, Peru. She worked for several non-governmental organization in the areas of health and development. In 1988, she returned to Fargo to complete her B.S. at NDSU. In 1989, she returned to Peru. In 1993, they moved to Fargo, where she worked with Fargo Cass County Public Health as a nurse with Healthcare for the Homeless.
She is survived by her husband; her children, Natalia, Juan, Luis and Daniel; her parents; a brother, Mark, Grand Forks; a sister, Mona (Gregory) Barz, Nashville, Tenn.; and grandparents, John and Laura Huber, Fargo.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Church of the Nativity, Fargo.
Visitation: 7 to 8 p.m. today, and one hour before services, all in the church.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo (Boulger, Fargo).
Harold Schumaker
CROOKSTON -- Harold R. Schumaker, 83, Crookston, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.
Harold Ruben Schumaker was born Oct. 18, 1916, the son of Fred and Rectina (McCoy) Schumaker, in Sparta, Wis. He moved with his family to Grygla, Minn., where he attended school. He married
Augusta Heyer in 1958, in Bemidji. They lived in several Minnesota towns. She died in 1966.
He is survived by a son, Art (Della), Cass Lake, Minn.; a daughter, Charlotte Schumaker, in Missouri; three grandchildren; and brothers, Wesley (Joyce) Laughery, Grand Forks, and Jesse (Mary Jane) Laughery, Crookston.
He was preceded in death by sons, Orville, Robert and Raymond; a sister, Clara Hudson; and a brother, Leonard.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: St. Olds Cemetery, Grygla.
Elizabeth Stone
VESELEYVILLE, N.D. -- Elizabeth "Betty" Stone, 98, Veseleyville, died Monday, July 24, 2000, in Lutheran Sunset Home, Grafton, N.D.
Elizabeth Suda was born Nov. 14, 1901, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Dusek) Suda in Fertile Township, Walsh County, N.D., where she attended school. She moved to St. Paul in 1928, where she lived and worked. She married
Jack Stone in February 1946, in St. Paul. He died in the summer of 1978. She returned to North Dakota in 1978. She lived in Park River before moving to Grafton.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Joe, Wences "Jim" and Frank; and sisters, Josephine Matcha, Anna Votava, Petronella Pletka and Balbina Lovcik.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, St. Luke's Catholic Church, Veseleyville.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Henriksen-Kamrowski Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Church cemetery.
Myrtle Porter
Myrtle E. Porter, 92, Rolling Meadows, Ill., formerly of Grand Forks, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, in Rolling Meadows.
Myrtle E. Porter was born Aug. 5, 1907, the daughter of William and Margaret (Nisbet) Porter, in Nisbet Township, Polk County, Minn.
She is survived by a nephew and a niece.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Willard; and sisters, Frances Swan and Lois Porter.
Memorial Services: 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nisbet Cemetery, rural East Grand Forks (Stennes, East Grand Forks).
Alfred Fruhwirth
CARRINGTON, N.D. -- Alfred Fruhwirth, 77, Carrington, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, in Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford, N.D.
Alfred Fruhwirth was born Nov. 10, 1922, the son of Michael and Teresa (Laber) Fruhwirth, in Sykeston, N.D., where he attended school. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1939 to 1940. He worked in the N.D. Peace Garden in Dunseith, N.D. He joined the U.S. Army in 1944. He received two Purple Hearts. He returned home and started farming in 1947. He retired in 1992 and worked for Norman Hansen.
He is survived by brothers, John (Elaine), Lakewood, Calif., Ken (Bonnie), Carrington, and Bill (Gloria), Larimore, N.D.; and a sister, Mary (James) Fornshell, Minot.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 8: 30 p.m., today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.
Burial: Carrington Cemetery.
Military rites: American Legion John Raymond O'Hara Post No. 25 and VFW McCreary-Bonderud Post No. 3524, both of Carrington.
Edith Tangen
Edith G. Tangen, 93, formerly of Grand Forks, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in the Northwood (N.D.) Deaconess Health Care Center.
Edith G. Glans was born July 31, 1906, the daughter of Emil and Hilda (Johnson) Glans, in Tioga, N.D. She attended school in Tioga and Tolna, N.D. She graduated from Mayville Normal College and taught school in Pekin and Tolna. She married
Peder Tangen on Sept. 27, 1926, in Fargo. He died Aug. 4, 1955. She served as postmaster of the Pekin Post office for 28 years. She retired in 1968 and moved to Grand Forks. She spent summers in Pekin until 1970. In 1997, she moved to Killdeer, N.D. until moving to the Northwood Deaconess Health Care Center.
She is survived by a daughter, Sharryn (George) Beckman, Lakota, N.D.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Louise Burns, Helen Jondahl and Lilah Kendall.
Services: 3: 30 p.m. Friday, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, and one hour before services, all in the funeral home.
Burial: 11 a.m. Saturday, Pekin Cemetery.
Carol Spale
MINTO, N.D. -- Carol J. Spale, 54, Minto, formerly of Grand Forks, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at home.
Carol June Coulter was born May 19, 1946, the daughter of Jean and Doris (Farmer) Coulter, in Grafton, N.D. She graduated from high school near Inkster, N.D. She attended Aakers Business College and a beauty college, both in Grand Forks. She owned and operated a beauty shop and worked in a salon in the South Forks Plaza Mall, Grand Forks. She married
Ron Spale on Feb. 21, 1976, in Grand Forks. They lived in Minto.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Todd (Jodi), Rosemont, Minn.; a daughter, Cari (Brice) Johnson, Grand Forks; a grandson; and a brother, Dale (Loretta), Grand Forks.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Knox Presbyterian Church, Minto.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Forest River (N.D.) Cemetery.
