Joseph German, 91

Joseph German, 91, Hankinson, N.D., died Friday, April 17, 2009, at St. Gerard's Community Nursing Home, Hankinson.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 22 at St. Philip's Catholic Church, Hankinson, with the Rev. Scott Sautner as celebrant.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. all at the Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial with military honors by the Hankinson American Legion Eberhard Post No. 88 and the Mantador V.F.W. Post No. 9317 will be at Calvary Cemetery, Hankinson.

Pallbearers are Ron German, Ray German, Art Bernard, Glenn Hubrig, Paul Althoff, Steve Lommel and Allen Killian. Honorary pallbearers are "All His Friends & Family." The organist will be Mary Ellen Krump with special music by St. Philip’s Choir.

Joseph Frank German was the eldest of 11 children, born Feb. 7, 1918, in Humphrey, Neb., to Edward J. and Catherine (Brockhouse) German. In 1921 his family moved to White Rock, S.D., until 1934 from they moved to a farm in Waldo Township, near Hankinson. On Feb. 20, 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Signal Corps. On Oct. 13, 1945, he was honorably discharged. Joseph then farmed the Healy Triple H Hereford Farm in the fall of 1948 where he raised registered Herefords until the spring of 1984 when he retired. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Althoff on Sept. 12, 1951, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Wahpeton, N.D. In 1986 he moved into Hankinson where he has lived since.

Joseph was a member of St. Philip’s Catholic Church, where he was the first elected trustee. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Forsters, a member of the Hankinson American Legion Eberhard post No. 88 for 65 years where he was the financial officer for 39 years. He was a life member of the Mantador V.F.W. Post No. 9317 and a member of 40 et 8. He enjoyed golfing, reading and playing baseball in his younger years.

He is survived by: his wife, Dorothy German, Hankinson; a daughter, Anne Whelan and her special friend, Duane Schwab, Aberdeen, S.D.; son-in-laws, Jerome Hohertz, Cooperstown, N.D., and Jack Lepp, Wahpeton; a daughter-in-law, Gloria Hubrig, Hankinson; three brothers, Louis (Eleanor) German and James (Honora) German, both of Minneapolis, Minn., and Charles (Donna) German, Rochester, Minn.; three sisters, Alice Morris, Minneapolis, Leona German, Fargo, N.D., and Marjorie Lommel, Herman, Minn.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by: his parents, Edward and Catherine German; a son, Alan German; two daughters, Mary Lepp and Jane Hohertz; and four brothers, Paul, Clarence, Linus and Art.

Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson is in charge of the arrangements.

Caroline Berg Boyer, 88

Caroline Berg Boyer, 88, Groton, S.D., formerly of Aberdeen, S.D., died Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at Golden Living Center at Groton.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 22 at Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory, 1708 8th Ave. NE, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1-4 pm Sunday, Dec. 21 and on from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22 at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Bath Cemetery, Bath, S.D. Lunch and fellowship will follow at the Eagles Club.

Caroline McKinnon, daughter of Kenneth and Emma (Fritchie) McKinnon was born Sept. 15, 1920, at Minneapolis, Minn.

She was united in marriage to Clinton Berg on Dec. 7, 1945, at Minneapolis after he was honorably discharged from the service. They had four children and Carol was a stay at home mom, raising their family in North Dakota and South Dakota. Her husband died in 1973. Carol then moved to Fargo where she was a housemother and cook at North Dakota State University for about 15 years. She was an honorary Gamma Phi Beta and helped raise so many of the college students at NDSU.

She was then united in marriage to Lorin Boyer on Sept. 18, 1991, at Wahpeton, N.D. They lived in Wahpeton until they moved to Aberdeen. They were active in the Eagles Club for 17 years. Her husband died Dec. 11, 2007.

Carol was a ray of sunshine to everyone. She had a knack for always smiling and cheering everyone up. She was an avid reader all her life and always had a stash of three or four boxes of books tucked away. When in Minneapolis, she spent a great deal of time with her mother going to the movies and later enjoyed movies with her children and grandchildren. Spending time with her family was her greatest love; she could cook and bake for them, making sugar bread sandwiches for her grandchildren to eat on the way home. A wonderful gift that she left her grandchildren was stories that she read to them and taped so that they could listen to them when she couldn’t be there for them.

Survivors include: two daughters, Judy (Dean) Weismantel of Aberdeen, and Laurie (Curtis) Nulle of Belle Fourche, S.D.; two sons, Ken “Bergy” Berg and Mark Berg, both of Aberdeen; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four families of step-children in North Dakota; also, her caring family at Golden Living Center and her dear friend, Dorothy Waba.

Her parents, both husbands and one brother preceded her in death.

The family prefers memorials be made to Golden Living Center, 1106 N. 2nd St., Groton, SD 57445.

Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen have been entrusted with arrangements.

Chris Bohn, 48

Chris Bohn, 48, Grandin, N.D., died May 7, 2009, at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview in Minneapolis, Minn.

Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 16 at First Presbyterian Church, 650 2nd Avenue North, Fargo, N.D.

A prayer service will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 15 at Boulger Funeral Home, 123 10th St S., Fargo ND, with visitation from 5-7 PM and the service at 7 PM. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service in the church. Lunch will be served immediately after the service.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the Grandin Community Cemetery in Grandin.

Chris Bohn was born Nov. 27, 1960, to Ronald and Betty (Muehler) Bohn at St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge, Minn. He was raised in rural Wahpeton, N.D., and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1979. He attended North Dakota State College of Science and North Dakota State University where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture.

He worked at Agway Inc. and then CHS in Grandin until his death. He was united in marriage to Jody Dally on July 23, 1988, in West Fargo, N.D., and they made their home in Grandin. Chris was very active in family, school, and community activities including the Northern Cass Booster Club, Grandin Fire Department, Northern Cass Summer Recreation Board, Grandin City Council, First Presbyterian Church of Grandin Session, and the Grandin Civic Club Gaming Board. He was also an active member of the National Sunflower Association, the Northern Grain Managers Association and various other seed and grain trade organizations. His passions were hunting, fishing, golfing, snowmobiling and his children.

Chris touched so many lives and he will be missed tremendously by his family and all who knew him. His strong spirit to live and faith in God will always be admired by many who knew him to “Never Give Up.” The family wishes to thank all those who have offered prayers, greetings, cards, food, and support over the last few months and years.

A special thank you to all of the doctors, nurses and chaplains at MeritCare on seventh floor and ICU; the doctors, nurses and chaplains at St. Alexius in Bismarck, N.D., along with the doctors, nurses and chaplains at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview in Minneapolis. You allowed us to keep the faith.

Chris is survived by: his loving wife, Jody (Dally) Bohn; his daughter, Megan; his son, Zachery and his daughter, Molly all of Grandin; his mother, Betty Bohn of Wahpeton; and his brother, Rick Bohn of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his brother-in-law, Tom Dally; his sister-in-law, Kim Dally; and their children, Kyle and Kaila of Grandin.

He was preceded in death by: his father, Ronald; his father-in-law, Donald Dally; his grandmother, Clara Bohn; his grandfather, Herman Muehler; and his grandmother, Alma Muehler.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.

Rena Mary Ann Herman, 72

Rena Mary Ann Herman, 72, Veblen, S.D., died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Coteau des Prairies Hospital, Sisseton, S.D.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 26 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Veblen.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 25 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Frank Family Funeral Home in Lidgerwood, N.D. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Havana, N.D.

Frank Family Funeral Home, Lidgerwood, is in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Johnson, 87

Dorothy Johnson, 87, Wahpeton, N.D., formerly of Gwinner and Milnor, N.D., died Monday, May 11, 2009, at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, Minn.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 15 at the Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church in Gwinner, with the Rev. Curt Larson officiating.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 14 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. also at Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church.

Burial will be at Concordia Cemetery near Milnor.

Casketbearers for her service will be Carol and Ryan Kutter, Craig and Sheryl McFarland, Kyle and Lindsey Hegle, Sara Hegle, and Joe Pluta.

Dorothy Jean Marie Nunn, daughter of Percy and Esther (Hansen) Nunn, was born July 27, 1921, at Milnor, where she grew up and attended school. Dorothy graduated from Milnor High School in 1939, as salutatorian of her class. She was united in marriage to Clifford Johnson on Oct. 29, 1944, at the Milnor Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Schuman Township south of Milnor until November of 1968, when they moved to Gwinner. Clifford died on Nov. 8, 1973. In 2005, Dorothy moved to Wahpeton to live with her daughter, Pam and family; and in September of 2008 she moved into the Leach Home in Wahpeton.

Dorothy was active in church, and enjoyed singing in choirs. She also liked reading and doing needlework.

She is survived by: two daughters, Judy (Larry) Hegle, Eagan, Minn., and Pam (Keith) McFarland, Wahpeton, N.D.; her sister, Mardell (Bob) Bergeson, Gwinner, N.D.; four grandchildren, Carol (Ryan) Kutter, Groton, S.D., Craig (Sheryl) McFarland, West Fargo, N.D., Kyle (Lindsey) Hegle, Savage, Minn., and Sara Hegle, Rosemont, Minn.; and a great-granddaughter, Emma Jean Kutter, Groton; three sisters-in-law, Regina Nunn, Milnor, Lillian Bodding, Ada, Minn., and Lorrine Johnson, Fargo, N.D.; a special friend, Bev (Keith) Falken, Rosholt, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by: her parents, her husband, and a brother, Marvin.
