Sidney Johnson
BEMIDJI -- Sidney A. Johnson, 77, Bemidji, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in Havenwood Care Center, Bemidji.
Sidney Adolph Johnson was born Aug. 7, 1922, the son of Thomas and Clara (Okstad) Johnson, in Gonvick, Minn., where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and a received a Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, and European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars. He married
Marjorie Miller on Oct. 13, 1972, in Minneapolis. They lived in Minneapolis and then Bemidji. He worked in maintenance and janitorial services at the local clubs in the Bemidji area.
He is survived by his wife; stepsons, Marvin Bunnell, Minneapolis, and Keith (Carrie) Bunnell, Forest Lake, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Gloria (Mark) Nelson, Minneapolis; three stepgrandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Westrum, Bemidji.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Paul, Floyd and Wilfred; and sisters, Paula Newell, Thelma Voxland and Myrtle Lien.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: United Lutheran Cemetery, Winsor Township, Clearwater County, Minn.
F. Duane Walen
GLENFIELD, N.D. -- F. Duane Walen, 70, Hamilton, Mont., formerly of Glenfield, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at home.
F. Duane Walen was born May 10, 1930, the son of Lars and Anna Walen, in Glenfield, where he graduated from high school in 1948. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He returned to North Dakota and attended UND. He married
Mary Bowden on Nov. 23, 1955, in Grand Forks. In 1957, he received his bachelor's degree from UND. They moved to Los Angeles, where he was an auditor for the Bank of America for two years, then an auditor for the City of Los Angeles. He later joined the Aerojet General Corp. and worked for 27 years as a financial manager before his retirement. He received his master's degree from the Claremont (Calif.) Graduate School. They moved to Hamilton in 1990. Mary Walen died Dec. 18, 1996.
He is survived by sons, Mark, Fair Oaks, Calif., and Shawn, Hamilton; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers; and two sisters.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Glenfield Lutheran Church.
Burial: Glenfield Cemetery

Kenneth Miller
BEMIDJI -- Kenneth N. Miller, 73, Bemidji, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, in Clearwater County, Minn.
Kenneth Neal Miller was born June 2, 1927, the son of John and Millie (Chamberlain) Miller, in Chamberlain, S.D. He attended school in South Dakota. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. He moved to the Iron Range and worked as an electrician foreman for Minnesota Power and Light, retiring after 30 years. He moved to Tower, Minn. He was a manager and caretaker of several apartments. He moved to Bemidji in 1992 and worked for Pine Ridge Service until retiring in March 1998.
He is survived by nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Millie Bullis; and brothers, John and Donald.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, First Assembly of God Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
Dr. Orion Beich
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Dr. Orion Beich, 79, Thief River Falls, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine, Minn.
Orion D. Beich was born Jan. 16, 1921, the son of Reinhold and Palma (Flegel) Beich, in Kulm, N.D., where he attended school. He attended Minneapolis Business College and Communication Training at the University of Oxford in Ohio. He worked at a bank in Benson, Minn., and at the Continental Illinois Bank in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Navy from January 1942 to December 1945. In 1948, he graduated from Illinois College of Optometry and practiced in Moorhead. He married
Bette Kuknyo on Sept. 27, 1947, in Chicago. They lived in Moorhead for six months and then moved to Thief River Falls in 1949, where he opened an office, Falls Vision Clinic. He retired in 1985.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Barbara (Richard) Anderson, Waukasha, Wis.; sons, Steven (Mary), Thief River Falls, and Terry (Sandy), East Grand Forks; four grandchildren; and sisters, Arlene Hildebrand and Ellyne Swaddling, both in California, and Marion Sharon, Sun City, Ariz.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Bernard's Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Florence Horner
ESMOND, N.D. -- Florence Horner, 73, Esmond, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in Heart of America Medical Center, Rugby.
Florence Barbara Leier was born Dec. 30, 1926, the daughter of Jake and Kate (Bartsch) Leier, in Esmond, where she graduated from high school in 1945. She received her standard teachers certificate from Minot State Teachers College. She taught in Fillmore, Wellsburg, Gackle, Turtle Lake, and Hebron, N.D. She married
Albert Horner on Nov. 24, 1953, in Esmond. She substituted for Esmond Public School. She worked with her husband in the family grocery store until it closed in 1975. She worked for several cafes in Esmond, provided care for Charlie Lunde, baby-sat and cared for her mother and mother-in-law.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Steven (Carol), Bismarck; daughters, Nancy (Rick) Roberson, Huntsville, Ala., Shirley Horner, Monroe, La., Pat (Walt) Koenig, Springfield, Vt., and Connie Belgarde, Minot; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Bob (Lee), Hillsdale, Mich.; and sisters, Berenice (Joe) Leibhan, Esmond, Lucille (Merton) Peterson, Bottineau, N.D., Evonne (Richard) Lang, Scott City, Kan., Judy Mayer, North Pole, Alaska, and Gale Deyton, Green Mountain, N.C.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, St. Boniface Catholic Church, Esmond.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. today, Nelson Funeral Home, Esmond, and after 6: 30 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, in the church.
Retta Wixo
LARIMORE, N.D. -- Retta L. Wixo, 59, Fargo, formerly of Larimore, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at home.
Retta L. Kreiger was born Sept. 7, 1941, in Oakes, N.D. She grew up and graduated from high school in Larimore. She married
Ronald Wixo on July 10, 1958, in Moorhead. They lived in several communities in Minnesota and North Dakota and in 1965 moved to Fargo. In 1970, they moved to Montana and lived in Helena and Great Falls. They returned to Fargo in 1979.
She is survived by her husband; children, Greg (Lisa), Laurie (Tim) Raftevold, and Ryan (Marlene), all of Fargo, and Dean (Stacey), Moorhead; 13 grandchildren; brothers, Dennis, Duluth, and Tom (Mary), Grand Forks; and a sister, Donna (Joe) Farrell, Larimore.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Church of the Nativity.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.
Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Fargo.
Gladys Lunney
LARIMORE, N.D. -- Gladys Lunney, 91, Larimore, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, in Northwood (N.D.) Deaconess Health Center.
Gladys Louise Delaney was born March 15, 1909, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Evanson) Delaney, in Arvilla, N.D., where she attended school. She married
Hugh Lunney on June 30, 1931, in Larimore. They farmed near Larimore until 1985. Hugh Lunney died June 13, 1982. She worked for the Grand Forks County Home, Larimore, and later for Larimore Good Samaritan Center. She retired in 1985. She was a charter member of the Moraine Township Homemakers Club.
She is survived by sons, Robert, Larimore, and Richard (Carrolia), Iowa Park, Texas; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles, Austin, Minn., and Ervin "Bud, " Fargo; sisters-in-law, Sister Agnes Veronica, St. Paul, Cora Delaney, Larimore, and Helen Delaney, Santa Maria, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marion Lunney; a grandson; brothers, David, Tim, and Harry and sisters, Laura Lindberg and Norma Buurman.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, St. Stephen's Church, Larimore.
Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. today and Monday in Brown Funeral Home, Larimore, with an 8 p.m. family service Monday in the church, and an hour and a half before services in the church.
Burial: Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore.
