Melvina Gourd
ST. MICHAEL, N.D. -- Melvina "Ma" Gourd, 85, St. Michael, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Melvina Littlewind was born July 29, 1915, in Fort Totten, N.D. She grew up in the Crow Hill, N.D., area. She attended boarding schools in Fort Totten and Bismarck. She married
George Gourd in 1933 in Fort Totten, where they lived. In 1971, they moved to St. Michael. George Gourd died in April 1982. She worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as head cook for the school system in Fort Totten. She opened Ma Gourd's Coffee Shop in 1974 in the Community Center in Fort Totten. She retired in 1993.
She is survived by daughters, Marlene Anderson, St. Michael, and Judy Ami, Fort Totten; sons, Kenneth, Tokio, N.D., and Garry, St. Michael; 45 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four grandchildren; her parents, William and Jean Woods Shaw; a brother, Joe Littlewind; and sisters, Agnes Brown, Mary Ann Chaske, Rose Thomas and Grace Walkingeagle.
Services: Were held in St. Michael.
Burial: Tokio Lutheran Church Cemetery
(Gilbertson, Devils Lake).
Viena Thom
CANDO, N.D. -- Viena Thom, 87, Cando, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in Towner County Medical Center, Cando.
Viena M. Pikkarainen was born Dec. 23, 1912, the daughter of Otto and Amanda (Hamari) Pikkarainen, in Armourdale, N.D. She grew up and attended school there and in Rolla, N.D. She graduated from high school in Cando. She married
Arnold Thom on Nov. 1, 1933, in Devils Lake. They lived and farmed near Cando until 1992, when they retired and moved into Cando. Arnold Thom died May 5, 1999.
She is survived by daughters, Lorraine (Larry) Schneider, Broomfield, Colo., Diane (Charles) Walker, Minot, Carole (Leslie) Stremick, Langdon, N.D., and Barbara (Robert) McCoy, Gig Harbor, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Viola Falls, Belt, Mont.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, United Methodist Church, Cando.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: I.O.O.F Cemetery, Cando.
Martha Gariepy
BATHGATE, N.D. -- Martha Gariepy, 81, Bathgate, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, in Fridley, Minn.
Martha Francis Brown was born Jan. 2, 1919, the daughter of Peter and Mabel (Jenson) Brown, in Bathgate, where she attended school. She married
Ernest Gariepy on July 20, 1937. After retiring from the Air Force in 1959, they moved to Minneapolis..
She is survived by her husband; a brother, Jackson (Betty) Brown; and a sister-in-law, Marlys Brown, Cavalier, N.D.
She was preceded in death by a son, Peter; and a brother, Alex.
Services: 11 a.m. today, Miller Funeral Home, Fridley.
Burial: Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Maxine Hanson
CROOKSTON -- Maxine Hanson, 75, Crookston, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, in Valley Memorial Home, Grand Forks.
Maxine Glass was born July 23, 1925, the daughter of Earl and Alma (Berg) Glass, in Crookston, where she graduated from high school in 1941. She married
Gilman Hanson on Dec. 27, 1943, in Crookston. They lived in Crookston until 1953, when they began farming in Fairfax Township. They retired from farming in 1985. In 1993, they moved into Crookston. The spent several winters in Mesa, Ariz.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Richard "Tuffy" (Terry), Crookston; daughters, Carol (Stuart) Morgan, Land-O-Lakes, Fla., Peggy (Dennis) Inglis, Fargo, and Wendy (Tom) Nimens, East Grand Forks; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; brothers, Russell (Jeanette), Crookston, and Robert (Tracee), Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Mitzi (Peter) Feeney, Casper, Wyo.; and a brother-in-law, Chan Freije, Wenatchee, Wash.
She was preceded in death by a grandson; a brother, Richard; and sisters, Dorothy Morrisey and Mavis Freije.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Crookston.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
Elsie Reed
BEMIDJI -- Elsie J. Reed, Bemidji, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, in the Good Samaritan Center, Clearbrook, Minn., where she had lived since this past September.
Elsie Sandberg Reed worked at Wilson's Clothing Store, Bemidji and later at O'Mearas Clothing and Ken K. Thompson Jewlers both in Bemidji. She married
Byers "Wally" Reed on April 21, 1936.

E. Parkinson Carr
COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- Esther Parkinson Carr, 93, Cooperstown, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, in Griggs County Nursing Home, Cooperstown.
Esther was born May 26, 1907, in Trenton, N.J., where she attended school. She graduated from McKinley Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She worked as a nurse. She married
Leon Carr on Oct. 6, 1934, in Trenton. In 1949, they moved to California, where they lived until retiring. They moved to Cooperstown in 1994. Leon Carr died Jan. 22, 1996.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Barry (Norine), Cooperstown; a daughter, Nancy (Gary) Short, Sitka, Alaska; and six grandchildren.
Services: Will be held in California in the spring (Quam-Plaisted-Cushman, Cooperstown).
Marvin Flaten
PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Marvin A. "Sonny" Flaten, 71, Park River, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, in St. Ansgar's Health Center, Park River.
Marvin A. Flaten was born Aug. 13, 1929, the son of Amos and Ida (Lien) Flaten, in Grafton, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Park River. He attended North Dakota State University. He married
Evelyn Flaten on Feb. 14, 1949, in Crookston. They farmed in Latona Township, Walsh County, N.D., for seven years. They moved to Park River and started Flaten Construction. They owned and operated Northside Grocery for seven years. He retired in 1990.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Randall (Caren), Anchorage, Alaska, Larry (Chris), Park River, and Douglas (Sharon) and Don (Lori), both of Williston, N.D., a daughter; Maren (Sam) Harki, Anchorage; 11 grandchildren; brothers, Irwin (Evelyn B.), Ander (Betty), Amos (Darlene), all of Park River; and sisters, Erna (William) Cole, Williston, and Judith Engelmann, Grand Forks.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Park River.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Tollefson Funeral Home, Park River, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery.
