Olga Hjelden
MINNEWAUKAN, N.D. -- Olga T. Hjelden, 84, Minnewaukan, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, in the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Olga Thorine Ness was born May 25, 1916, the daughter of Peder and Christie (Helgeseth) Ness, in Normania Township, Ramsey County, N.D. She attended school in Eldon Township, Benson County, N.D. She married
Melvin Hjelden on July 7, 1934, in Minnewaukan. They lived and farmed in Eldon Township until moving to Minnewaukan in 1973. Melvin Hjelden died Nov. 6, 1988. She lived in Minnewaukan until moving to Devils Lake in April 1999.
She is survived by daughters, Mavis (Glenn) Overby, Bisbee, N.D., Clarice (Richard) Cramer, Kindred, N.D., Joyce (Jim) Greene, Fargo, and Ardis (Curtis) Christianson, Valley City, N.D.; sons, Myron (Karen), Vergas, Minn., Jerry, Grand Forks, Rodney (Diane), Surrey, N.D., David (Mary), Gilette, Wyo., and Jim (Audrey), Williams Lake, B.C.; a son-in-law, Kenneth Bonn, Minnewaukan; 37 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Thompson, Bismarck; and a brother, Laurice (Signe), Devils Lake.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Bonn; a grandson; and a sister, Grace Thompson.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Peter Lutheran Church, Minnewaukan.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan.
Burial: West Minnewaukan Cemetery.
Mary McDonald
GRAFTON, N.D. -- Mary McDonald, 92, Fargo, formerly of Grafton, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Mary McDonald was born July 5, 1908, the daughter of John and Eva (Rudnik) McDonald, in Grafton, where she graduated from high school in 1926. She received her bachelor of science from the University of Minnesota and did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin and Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis. She was a commercial leader at Warren (Minn.) High School and Racine, Wis., from 1935 to 1961, and taught at Washington Park High School for 24 years. She moved to Fargo in 1966.
She is survived by a nephew.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen; and brothers, the Rev. Edward and Jack.
Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, St. Mary's Cathedral, Fargo, and a gathering at 3 p.m., in St. John's Catholic Church, Grafton.
Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 6: 45 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. prayer service, all in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, and one hour before services in the cathedral.
Burial: St. John's Cemetery, Grafton.
Charles Fee
VESELEYVILLE, N.D. -- Charles "Lefty" Fee, 88, Veseleyville, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at home.
Charles Fee was born Sept. 21, 1912, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Malone) Fee, in Opps Township, Walsh County, N.D., where he attended school. He married
Rita Foerster on June 29, 1941, in Minto, N.D. They lived in Veseleyville, where he did painting and carpentry.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Wayne (Linda), Devils Lake, and Tom (Sharon), Veseleyville; a daughter, Muriel (Terry) Stadstad, Grand Forks; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Wylam, Port Angeles, Wash., Madeline Schanilec, Minto, Geraldine Foerster, Fargo, and Pat (Wally) Jensen, Grand Forks; and a sister-in-law, Mabel Fee, Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death by a son, William; a granddaughter; brothers, Emmett, Earl, Ray and Frank; and sisters, Elizabeth and Madonna.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday, St. Luke's Catholic Church, Veseleyville.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services all in the church (Henriksen-Kamrowski, Grafton, N.D.).
Jerome Siegmund
CROOKSTON -- Jerome "Jerry" Siegmund, 78, Crookston, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, in Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston.
Jerome A. Siegmund was born April 1, 1922, the son of Michael and Anna (Witzman) Siegmund, in St. Cloud, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1940. He attended business college in St. Cloud. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1945, he returned home. He married
Eleanore Gladke on Nov. 10, 1942, in St. Cloud. They moved to Crookston in 1948. He worked as a bookkeeper for Nash-Finch Co., in Crookston and later for Kelley Oil. He retired in 1987. Eleanore Siegmund died Nov. 6, 1997. He worked part time for KROX radio station.
He is survived by daughters, Ann (Jim) Kasel, Crookston, and Peggy (Al) Nohner, Bemidji; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a sister, Gertrude (Lenny) Zylla, St. Cloud.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Nic and Joseph; and sisters, Margaret, Rita, and an infant.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Crookston.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the cathedral.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Crookston.
Military Rites: Crookston Veterans Council (Stenshoel-Houske, Crookston).
Eugene Schmitt
BEMIDJI -- Eugene J. Schmitt, 86, Bemidji, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at his daughter's home in Guthrie, Minn.
Eugene John Schmitt was born Feb. 25, 1914, the son of Nicholas and Susan (Guck) Schmitt, in St. Cloud. He moved with his family to Guthrie, where he attended school. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He married
Teresa Skeffington on May 2, 1942, in Park Rapids, Minn. He farmed, logged, and did carpentry work. He worked for DNR forestry and the Greenview program. He retired in 1996. Teresa Schmitt died Jan. 3, 1990.
He is survived by a son, James (Susan), Guthrie; daughters, Susan (Robert) Moos, Elk River, Minn., and Anne (Matthew) Schummer, Guthrie; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Tangborn, Granite Falls, Wash.
He was preceded in death by two brothers; and a sister.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Philip's Catholic Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Park Rapids.
Nellie Vander Heiden
DEVILS LAKE -- Nellie Vander Heiden, 86, Devils Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at home.
Nellie Leone Shipman was born June 7, 1914, the daughter of Munro and Nellie (Yarnell) Shipman, in Fairchild, Wis. She moved with her family to Devils Lake, where she attended school. She married
Albert Vander Heiden on Nov. 20, 1937, in Devils Lake, where they lived. In 1943, they moved to Fargo. In 1945, they returned to Devils Lake, where she worked at Gerrells, Mann's Departments Store and Our Own Hardware. She retired on Jan. 2, 1979. In 1982, they moved to Dillon, Colo., and then in 1983 to Colorado Springs, Colo. Albert Vander Heiden died Jan. 8, 1989. In July 1989 she returned to Devils Lake.
She is survived by sons, Richard, Devils Lake, and Ronald (Cheri), Colorado Springs; two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Esther Ridley, Devils Lake.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; and a sister.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, United Methodist Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. today, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.
