Elsie Lorenz
WALHALLA, N.D. -- Elsie J. Lorenz, 75, Fargo, formerly of Walhalla, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Elsie Best was born Feb. 24, 1925, the daughter of Roy and Myrtle (Smith) Best, in Walhalla, where she graduated from high school. She attended Jamestown College and graduated from North Dakota State University. She worked for the Walhalla State Bank. She married
John Lorenz on Oct. 4, 1947, in Park Rapids, Minn. They lived in Walhalla. She worked as an accountant in the family business, the John Deere Implement Dealership and Gambles Hardware. They moved to Fargo in November 1970. She worked as an accountant for the Fargo Park District from 1971 to 1978 and later for John West, CPA, Fargo; B&B; Industries, Moorhead: Tony Eckert Painting, West Fargo; and Vinge Firm, Fargo. John Lorenz died in 1984.
She is survived by sons, John (Melissa), Fargo, and Kent (Mary), Grand Forks; four grandchildren; and sisters, Hazel (Lloyd) Johnson, Vista, Calif., and Gladys Pearson, Pleasanton, Calif.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Faith Methodist Church, Fargo.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Boniface Cemetery, Walhalla.
Clara Erickson
BEMIDJI -- Clara M. Erickson, 91, Bemidji, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, in Havenwood Care Center, Bemidji.
Clara Mae Miller was born Aug. 23, 1909, the daughter of George and Louise (Laurent) Miller, in Bemidji. She grew up and attended school in Grant Valley Township, Beltrami County, Minn. She married
Clarence Erickson on Jan. 30, 1928, Bemidji. They lived in Grant Valley Township.
She is survived by a daughter, Gwen (Dan) Ewert, Bemidji; a son, Clarence (Gail), Bemidji; 15 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, LeRoy; a daughter, Louise Miller; two sisters; and nine brothers.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Evangelical Covenant Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
Florence Berg
CROOKSTON -- Florence A. Berg, 87, Crookston, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.
Florence A. Lerom was born Sept. 25, 1913, the daughter of Jens and Marie (Olson) Lerom, in Buxton, N.D., where she graduated from high school in 1931. She attended St. Luke's School of Nursing in Fargo and became a registered nurse in 1937. She moved to Crookston and worked at Sunnyrest Sanitarium. She married
Ralph Berg Sr. on Oct. 28, 1939, in Crookston. They moved to California, where she worked as a private duty nurse. They moved back to Crookston. Ralph Berg Sr. died in 1970.
She is survived by a son, Larry, Crookston; and a brother, Howard, Port Townsend, Wash.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Jr.; brothers, Jesse, Millard, Stanley, and Raymond; and sisters, Viola, Helen, and Stella.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services all in the funeral home.
Burial: Oakdale Cemetery.
Arlen Merrill
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Arlen Merrill, 49, Thief River Falls, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
Arlen Merrill was born June 30, 1951, the son of Robert and Lena (Raasch) Merrill, in Thief River Falls. He grew up and attended school in Goodridge, Minn. He served in the U.S. Navy. He married
Marcia Leach on Sept. 26, 1972, in Dorothy, Minn. He worked for Pennington County, Thief River Grain Elevator, the City of Thief River Falls and with the school district.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Chad, Robert (Delanie) and Jesse, all of Thief River Falls; four grandchildren; a brother, Richard, Alvarado, Minn.; and sisters, Mable (Alvin) Anderson and Margie Rutz, both of Thief River Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ernest; and grandparents, Jesse and Annie Merrill.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Doris Stotts
STARKWEATHER, N.D. -- Doris Stotts, 72, Starkweather, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Doris Mae Lindenberg was born Sept. 28, 1928, the daughter of Emil and Lillian (Smith) Lindenberg, in Starkweather. She grew up and attended school in West Banner Township, Cavalier County, N.D. She married
John Stinkeoway on June 14, 1947, in Starkweather, where they farmed. He died May 14, 1955. She married
Robert Stotts on Aug. 5, 1957, in Grand Forks. They lived near Starkweather. In 1979, they retired and moved into Starkweather.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Orville (Jeanette) Stinkeoway, Starkweather, and John Jr. (Sonia) Stinkeoway, Centralia, Wash.; daughters, Lois (Frank) Zacher, Wilton, N.D., Debra (Lyle) Johnson, Cando, N.D., and Marilyn (Randy) Weed, Woodbury, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; brothers, Lyle, Bozeman, Mont., Dennis and Leo, both of Rock Lake, N.D.; and sisters, Ione (Bernhard) Sedlocek, Omaha, Neb., Lorraine (Floyd) Evans, Cando, and Ilene (Bob) Quackenbush, Rock Lake.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Glen; and a sister, Byrdie Olson.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, United Methodist Church, Starkweather.
Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake.
Burial: Methodist Cemetery.
Emmet Birk
Emmet Birk, 86, Whittier, Calif., formerly of Grand Forks, died of cancer Nov. 6, 2000.
Emmet C. Birk was born March 21, 1914, in Grafton, N.D. He graduated from UND in 1937 with a bachelor's degree in geology. He joined the U.S. Army in 1941. He served for five years during World War II. He attended the University of Southern California for two years and earned a master's degree in education. He then moved to Whittier. He taught in Montebello Unified School District from 1948 to 1979 and continued as a substitude teacher for another 14 years. He also coached basketball and golf.
He is survived by his wife, Stella; daughters, Kristina Perry, in Idaho, and Lisa Ajir, Carmel, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Genelle.
Memorial services: Were held in Whittier.
Charles Spencer
BEMIDJI -- Charles "Duff" Spencer, 76, Bemidji, formerly of Tenstrike, Minn., died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, in Havenwood Care Center, Bemidji.
Charles Spencer was born April 24, 1924, the son of Hazel Morrison. He grew up and attended school in Tenstrike and Bemidji. He graduated from high school in Blackduck, Minn. He lived in Tenstrike until 1944, when he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to Tenstrike. He married
Janet Pemble on July 3, 1948, in Fosston, Minn. From 1948 to 1980, they lived in Tenstrike, where he worked for the U.S. Post Office as postmaster for 29 years. He retired Oct. 19, 1979. From 1980 to 1994, they lived in Turtle River, Minn. Since 1994, they lived on Gull Lake in Tenstrike. He also spent many years in the logging industry.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Cheryl (Tom) Spangler, Tenstrike; a son, Steven (Ann), Bemidji; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; a half sister, Mavis (Howard) Gillman, Bemidji; and half brothers, Robert (Iona) Kruger, Eagan, Minn., Ernest (Deanna) Kruger, St. Cloud, Minn., and Darrell (Jolene) Kruger, Bemidji.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Kruger; and a half sister, Donna Robinson.
Memorial services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Bemidji. Memorials are suggested to North Country Hospice, Bemidji (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
