Hilman Hjelmstad
REYNOLDS, N.D. -- Hilman Hjelmstad, 85, Bismarck, formerly of Reynolds, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, in a local hospital.
Hilman Hjelmstad was born June 23, 1915, the son of Jens and Hannah (Agotness) Hjelmstad in Reynolds, where he graduated from high school. He attended Mayville (N.D.) State Teachers College, from 1933 to 1934. He married
Lucille Johnson in 1940. She died in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army from November 1942 to November 1945. He married
Genevieve Hollarn in 1952, in Grand Forks. He entered the counselor training program at Hazelden Foundation in July 1966. In 1967, he began working as the director of Alcohol and Addiction Services, Williston. He retired in 1980.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Barbara (Richard) McConnell, Salt Lake City, and Sari (Michael) Pailing, Bismarck; sons, T. Craig, Winfield, B.C., and Neil, Bismarck; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pearl Gilbertson, Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death by three grandchildren; a brother; and three sisters.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck.
Visitation: 2 to 9 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the funeral home.
Burial: North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Military rites: VFW. Memorials are suggested to the N.D. Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Esther Strande
Esther Strande, 78, Buffalo, Minn., formerly of Gully and Oklee, Minn., died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, in the Buffalo Hospital.
Esther Luella Haugan was born Nov. 11, 1922, the daughter of Halvor and Ingeborg (Ostby) Haugan, in Hickory Township, Pennington County, Minn. She graduated from high school in Oklee. She married
Sidney Strande on Sept. 21, 1941. They lived and worked in the Gully and Oklee areas until moving to the Minneapolis area, in 1986. She worked at Burger King in Maple Grove, Minn., and as a bookkeeper at the Oklee Farmers Elevator. She retired in 1986.
She is survived by children, Sharol (Ray) Rau, Annandale, Minn., Judith (Nagi) Elbasuny, Champlin, Minn., and Douglas (Christine), Maple Grove, Minn.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sisters, Olive Bergh, Trail, Minn., Harriet Emerson, Gully, Hazel Nyleen, Sutherlin, Ore., and Murriel Nelson, Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Arlis Luaine.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Lund Lutheran Church, Gully.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Lund Lutheran Cemetery

Arthur Gernand
BEMIDJI -- Arthur W. "Art" Gernand, 88, Bemidji, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at home.
Arthur William Gernand was born June 24, 1912, the son of August and Anna Fuchs, in Lakin, Kan. He grew up on a farm near Alexandria, Minn. He graduated from University of Minnesota in Morris, Minn. He worked in Bemidji, Crookston, Fosston and Alexandria, Minn. He worked as a city administrator, public works director, codes administrator and building inspector. He was active in civil defense.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Lyndon, Tempe, Ariz.; stepsons, David (Lynda) Smith, Bemidji, and Robert (Carol) Smith, Becida, Minn.; stepdaughters, Kathy (Mac) Hardin, Minnetonka, Minn., Donetta (Albert) Gillstrom, Bemidji, and Lynn (Fred) Roehl, Lolo, Mont.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a brother, Edward Gernand, Moorhead.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Delores Lindblad; and a sister, Henrietta Gernand.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Kingo Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Memorials are suggested to First Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
Clara Tron
MADDOCK, N.D. -- Clara Tron, 89, Beulah, N.D., formerly of Maddock, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, in Knife River Care Center, Beulah, where she had lived since 1998.
Clara Brandvold was born Jan. 31, 1911, the daughter of Christian and Tilda (Dunham) Brandvold, in Maddock. She attended rural schools and graduated from high school in Maddock. She cared for her father until attending Valley City (N.D.) State Teachers College in 1930 and later taught school near Hazen, N.D. In 1932, she was appointed postmaster of Hesper, N.D. She married
Philip Tron on Sept. 8, 1935, in Dickey, N.D. In 1942, they moved to Portland, Ore., where she worked at Phillipson Machine Works as a turning lathe operator. She went to welding school and became a production welder at Kaiser Shipyard in Portland, manufacturing troop and aircraft carriers. After the war, they returned to their farm near Hesper. She cooked at the Maddock School and worked as a nurses aide at the Maddock Memorial Hospital until retiring in 1981. Philip Tron died May 3, 1992. She lived at Maddock Memorial Home until moving to Manor Care Nursing Home, Minot.
She is survived by a son, Philip (Mary), Hazen; and two granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Sophie Todahl, Minnie Barr, Gertie Erickson, Christine Iverson and Tina Brandvold; and brothers, Melvin, Alfred, Oscar, Kalmer, Emil, Stephen and Theodore.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.
Burial: Church cemetery.
Cora Evenson
Cora J. Evenson, 86, Valley Eldercare, Grand Forks, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Cora Josephine Brenna was born Jan. 12, 1914, the daughter of Henry and Anna Marie (Bye) Brenna, Hatton, N.D., where she attended school. She married
Francis Evenson on Dec. 28, 1933, in Hatton. They lived and farmed in the Hatton-Northwood area. They moved to Grand Forks in 1958, where they owned and operated the Airport Cafe and the Forx Hotel until their retirement. Francis Evenson died April 27, 1976.
She is survived by daughters, Fern (Erling) Nedberg, Nisswa, Minn., Rose (Dennis) Black, Fort Myers, Fla., and Rebecca (Paul) Rubin, Grand Forks; a son, Robert (Lynda) Ely, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert; and a sister, Alpha Holter.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, University Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the church.
Burial: Carl Ben Eielson Cemetery, Hatton (Gregory J. Norman, S. Washington).
Bonnie Bates
Bonnie Bates, 79, Bismarck, formerly of Grand Forks, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at home.
Bonnie Jeanne Blackwell was born April 19, 1921, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Miller) Blackwell, in Melzo, Mo. She grew up and attended school in Bonne Terre, Mo. She received a teaching certificate from State Teacher's College, Cape Girardeau, Mo. She married
Leslie Bates on May 5, 1942, in Junction City, Kan.
She is survived by sons, William Jr., Minot, formerly of Grand Forks, and Bruce, Crosby, Texas; and brothers, Ralph, Earl and James.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Robert; and sisters, Elsie Matthews and Ruby Collins.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck.
Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.
Burial: Middle Brook (Mo.) Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to McCabe United Methodist Church or the Open Door Community Center.
