Shirley Shuley
LANGDON, N.D. -- Shirley Shuley, 69, Langdon, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in Maple Manor Care Center, Langdon.
Shirley Ann Giles was born July 29, 1931, the daughter of William and Mabel (McGauvran) Giles, in Langdon, where she attended school. She married
John Shuley on Jan. 10, 1950, in Langdon. She worked as a librarian's aide in the Langdon Public School for 26 years. John Shuley died Feb. 12, 2000.
She is survived by daughters, Connie (Tim) Lorenz, in Hawaii, Jeannie (Dennis) Gendreau, Williston, N.D., Charlene (Rick) Christianson, Glenfield, N.D., and Carla Bradley, Langdon; sons, Allen (Linda), Rock Springs, Wyo., and Don (Susan), Grafton, N.D.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Maggie), Pocatello, Idaho; sisters, Mary Liapis, Bemidji, and Charlotte (Wilfred) Raeker, Fridley, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Leola Giles, Grand Forks.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Joseph and James.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Langdon.
Visitation: 2 to 5: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service Wednesday in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Langdon.
Bernhard Hessling
DEVILS LAKE -- Bernhard H. Hessling, 91, Devils Lake, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Bernhard H. Hessling was born July 22, 1909, the son of Heinrich and Christine Hessling, in Borken, Germany. He came to America on April 18, 1927. He worked on farms in Minnesota and Montana. He moved to Edmore, N.D., and worked on a farm. He married
Mildred Dammen on Sept. 8, 1936. They lived on the Williamson Stock Farm, Grafton, N.D., where he was the head herdsman. In March 1941, they moved to Warren, Minn., where he worked on the Smith farm. In 1943, they moved to Devils Lake, where he worked part-time at Farmers Mill. In 1946, they bought a farm in Starkweather, N.D., where they farmed for 30 years. He retired in 1976, and they moved to Devils Lake.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Robert (Eileen), Wadena, Minn., Raymond (Dorothy), Bismarck, and Richard (Sandi), Grand Forks; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Josepha, in Germany.
He was preceded in death by five brothers; and two sisters.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, First Baptist Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.
Gerald Bulger
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Gerald Bulger, 67, Thief River Falls, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Fargo.
Gerald Louis Bulger was born Jan. 6, 1933, the son of Alfred and Laura (Matton) Bulger, in Grand Forks. He grew up and attended school in Stephen, Minn. He joined the U.S. Army on March 31, 1953 and transferred to the Army Reserves on March 16, 1955. He married
Diann Parent on July 9, 1966, in Argyle, Minn. He worked for 41 years hauling propane for what is now known as Cenex-Land O' Lakes. He retired and for the past two years worked on the Richard Jorde farm.
He is survived by a daughter, Tammy Bulger, Thief River Falls; a son, Jeremy, Fargo; a sister, Vivian Gerhardt, Bismarck; and a brother, William (Joyce), Thief River Falls.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and a brother-in-law, Ralph Gerhardt.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Military rites: American Legion and VFW Posts of Thief River Falls.
Maurice Brandvold
GLENFIELD, N.D. -- Maurice "Morris" Brandvold, 75, Glenfield, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in Golden Acres Manor, Carrington, N.D.
Maurice Conway Brandvold was born May 15, 1925, the son of Melvin and Clara (Rue) Brandvold, in Kathryn, N.D., where he attended school. He worked for a house mover and on the family farm. He began his career in construction working for Gilbertson Construction Co., Jamestown, N.D. In 1964, he began Brandvold Construction Co. He built houses in Glenfield, elevators in Montana and churches in North Dakota. He married
Ninie Skundberg on June 5, 1964, in Devils Lake. They lived in Glenfield. He retired in 1995.
He is survived by his wife; a stepson, Arvid (Carol) Skundberg, Benson, Minn.; a stepgrandson; a brother, Leslie (Lois), Kathryn; and a sister, Verna (Maurice) Thoreson, Valley City, N.D.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Glenfield Lutheran Church.
Visitation: Noon to 8: 30 a.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.
Burial: Glenfield Cemetery.
V. Marie Fischer
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- V. Marie Fischer, 93, Thief River Falls, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
Verna Marie Lockwood was born Aug. 26, 1907, the daughter of Verne and Ina (Snoke) Lockwood, in Motley, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1925. She graduated from St. Cloud State Teachers College in 1927. She taught elementary grades in Minnesota. She married
Walter Fischer on Feb. 3, 1939. They moved to Thief River Falls in 1952.
She is survived by a son, Pat (Kay), Thief River Falls; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gladys (Walter) Lucas, Albany, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and brothers, Paul and Stanley Lockwood.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Clarice Palmer
Clarice A. Palmer, 82, Eufaula, Okla., formerly of Grand Forks, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, in Eufaula.
Clarice Adelle Moen was born Sept. 1, 1918, the daughter of Albert and Clara Moen, in Middle River, Minn. She grew up and graduated from high school in Newfolden, Minn., in 1936. She worked on a farm. She married
Warren Palmer on Nov. 15, 1939, in Moorhead. They lived in Grand Forks. In 1976, they moved to Henryetta, Okla. Warren Palmer died November 1985. She moved to Eufaula in 1995.
She is survived by a son, Keith (Wilma), Eufaula; daughters, Leila (Dean) Channing, of Illinois, and Lorna (John) Maxfield, Emporia, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Loren, Thief River Falls; and sisters, Helen Sorenson, Thief River Falls, Lily Olson, Newfolden, and Nadine Huntzicker, Chicago.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth; and sisters, Ella and Edith.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Sunnywood Gardens Cemetery, Grand Forks.
Manford Loge
COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- Manford Loge, 84, Cooperstown, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Griggs County Nursing Home, Cooperstown, where he had lived since Oct. 27, 2000.
Manford Loge was born May 5, 1916, the son of John and Susanna (Klubben) Loge, in Sverdrup Township, Griggs County, N.D., where he attended school. He farmed the family farm until retiring in 1987.
He is survived by a sister, Florence (A.K.) Johnson, Cooperstown.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Saron Free Church, Cooperstown.
Visitation: 1 to 7 p.m. Monday, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Saron Cemetery.
