Orvid Mickelson
FINLEY, N.D. -- Orvid Mickelson, 79, Finley, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Union Hospital, Mayville, N.D.
Orvid Edgar Allen Mickelson was born June 21, 1921, the son of Mons and Hanna (Hanson) Mickelson, in Finley, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married
Florence Mustad on Sept. 15, 1947, in Astoria, Ore. In 1952, they moved back to Finley and took over the family farm. They farmed until 1965 and kept the cattle until 1987. Florence Mickelson died Dec. 10, 1989. Orvid worked for Steele County Road Department for several years. He married
Elvina Brager on June 12, 1994, in Finley.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Ellen (Wayne) Houska, Grand Forks; a son, Daniel (Marcy), Las Vegas; 22 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Faye (Joe) Conzo, Grand Forks; stepsons, Keary (Sandi) Brager, Fargo, Myron (Karn) Brager, Finley, David (Lorna) Brager, West Fargo, and Ernest (Trish) Brager, Cooperstown; and sisters, Agnes (Melvin) Olson, Finley, Janet (Vern) Wegge, Cummings, N.D., and Loretta (Kenard) Knutson, Portland, N.D.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Finley Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Finley, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Ostervold Cemetery, Finley.
Charles Leonard
ROLETTE, N.D. -- Charles T. "Chuck" Leonard, 54, Rolette, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at home.
Charles Thomas Patrick Leonard was born Jan. 10, 1946, the son of M. James and Irene (Charlesbois) Leonard, in Rolette, where he graduated from high school in 1964. He graduated from Mayville (N.D.) State college, in 1968. After receiving his teaching degree, he began teaching business and coaching football and wrestling at Rolla (N.D.) High School from 1968 to 1970. He married
Margaret Metcalfe on June 7, 1969, in Dunseith, N.D. They lived in the Rolette area. In August 1970, he began working at the Rolette State Bank as an insurance agent. He worked at the bank for more than 30 years.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Nicole "Nikki" (Keith) Medalen, Towner, N.D.; a son, Chris, Cleveland; sisters, Carmen (Floyd) Richard, Rolette, and Carole McDonald, Bottineau, N.D.; and a brother, Harvey (Elsie), Rolette.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Rolette High School gymnasium.
Visitation: 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7: 30 p.m. rosary and vigil service, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rolette, and one hour before services in the school.
Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery

Marian Holmes
LEEDS, N.D. -- Marian A. Holmes, 81, Leeds, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake, where she had lived since April 1994.
Marian A. Lotvedt was born April 6, 1919, the daughter of Nels and Clara (Gunnerud) Lotvedt, in York, N.D. She moved with her family to Leeds, where she attended school. She worked for Ben Baglien Insurance Office. She married
John Holmes on July 3, 1937, in Leeds, where they lived. In 1943, they moved to Sacramento and returned to Leeds in 1944.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Janis (Curtis) Lunde, Brinsmade, N.D., and Karen (William) Julson, Mayville, N.D.; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Noral, Rugby, N.D.; and a sister, Leila Chalmers, Rugby.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Lotvedt and Mabelle Helland; and brothers, Selmer, Delford, Ole and Milford.
Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Leeds Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds.
Burial: Church cemetery.
William Wrege
BEMIDJI -- William G. Wrege, 96, Bemidji, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, in Havenwood Care Center, Bemidji.
William Gerhard Walter Wrege was born March 20, 1904, the son of Charles and Augusta (Hartke) Wrege, in Bemidji. He grew up in Nymore, Minn., and near Bemidji, where he attended school. He married
Laverne Fey on Nov. 28, 1932, in Crookston. They lived and farmed in Crookston, Oregon and Washington until 1950, when they moved near Bemidji. After retiring from farming, he worked as a janitor for Beltrami Department of Welfare and Paul Bunyan Telephone office, Bemidji. He retired in 1986.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Ernest (Norma), Los Angeles; a daughter, Janice (Joseph) Salvador, Tehachapi, Calif.; and a brother, Paul, Bemidji.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Tibbetts; and brothers, Otto and Charles.
Memorial services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
Carl Kutz
CARRINGTON, N.D. -- Carl E. Kutz, 95, Carrington, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in Golden Acres Manor, Carrington.
Carl Edward Kutz was born March 27, 1905, the son of Adolph and Amelia (Boelke) Kutz, in Sykeston, N.D., where he attended school. He married
Alyce Smith on Aug. 15, 1925, in Sykeston. They lived and farmed near Sykeston until 1970, when they retired and moved into Sykeston. In 1990, they moved to Carrington. Alyce Kutz died March 22, 2000.
He is survived by a daughter, Judy Kutz, Carrington; a son, Lyle (Evelyn), Jamestown; a daughter-in-law, Marlys Kutz, Carrington; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Elsa Berry, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; and a brother, Richard, Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by a son, Wallace; a grandson; three sisters; and four brothers.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Grace Lutheran Church, Carrington.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.
Burial: Sykeston Cemetery.
Richard Noble
BEMIDJI -- Richard E. Noble, 73, Bemidji, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bemidji.
Richard Earl Noble was born March 26, 1927, the son of Vernon and Hazel (Ingle) Noble, in Jamestown. He moved with his family to Bemidji in 1934, where he graduated from high school in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He returned to Minnesota and attended McPhail Music College. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Navy again. He married
Carol Lind on June 21, 1952. They lived in San Diego. He was discharged in 1954, and they returned to Bemidji. He worked in the area tuning and maintaining pianos. He moved to Grand Forks, where he managed Poppler's Music Store until 1962. He then became a police officer in Larimore, N.D. From 1963 to 1966 he was chief of police in Northwood, N.D. He moved to Miles City, Mont., where he worked for Pine Hills School for Boys as a receiving supervisor. In 1970, he returned to Bemidji, where he was the deputy sheriff for Beltrami County. In 1972, he resumed working as a piano tuner. In 1989, he began working for Palace Casino, Cass Lake, Minn., as a host and maintenance supervisor.
He is survived by his wife, Bemidji; daughters, Deborah (Douglas) Henry, Patricia Jones, and Jennifer Noble, all of Bemidji; six grandchildren; and a sister, Jane Noble-Cutting, Bel Grade, Mont.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren; four brothers; and a sister.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Saturday, St. Philips Catholic Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: After 5 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery.
S. Mitchell Garst
CANDO, N.D. -- S. Mitchell Garst, 84, Cando, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, in Towner County Medical Center, Cando.
Mitchell Garst was born Dec. 19, 1916, the son of David "Bert" and Edith (Williams) Garst, in Leeds, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He attended Bottineau (N.D.) Forestry School for one year and then returned to farm with his dad in the Leeds-Churchs Ferry, N.D., area until 1943, when he moved to the Cando area. He married
Margaret Birkland on Dec. 22, 1942, in Knox, N.D. They farmed in the Cando area. Margaret Garst died April 24, 1982. He farmed until retiring in 1989. He married
Edna Clemenson in July 1984, in Devils Lake. She died in August 1985. He was also married
to Martha Knetter of Wisconsin until 1987.
He is survived by daughters, Lois (Lee) Stark, Apple Valley, Minn., and Ruth Garst, Eden Prairie, Minn.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Johnson; and a son-in-law, Wayne Lindberg.
Services: 1 p.m. Sunday, Cando Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando.
