Alvin Bjerke
SHARON, N.D. -- Alvin J. Bjerke, 67, Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Sharon, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Mercy Hospital.
Alvin Joseph Bjerke was born June 1, 1933, the son of Bernard and Ida Bjerke, in Sharon, where he graduated from high school. He attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. He retired from E.D.S. Corporation as a senior systems engineer. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married
Ruth Rankin.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Bobbie (Rick) Brown, Dallas, N.C., Katie (Tim) Herring, Monroe, N.C., and Judy Wilson, Charlotte; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sisters, Marion Bartel, Walls, N.D., Izola Heffern, Grand Forks, Juanita Underwood and Barbara Bjerke, both of Dallas, Texas.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, All Saints Lutheran Church.

Barbara Brown
CANDO, N.D. -- Barbara H. Brown, 80, Cando, formerly of Rock Lake, N.D., died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in Towner County Living Center, Cando, where she had lived since March 1998.
Barbara Helen Spencer was born April 16, 1920, the daughter of Earl and Hilma (Wahlberg) Spencer, in Devils Lake. She lived in Oberon, N.D., where she attended school. She moved with her family to Rock Lake, where she graduated from high school in 1940. She attended Devils Lake General Hospital Nursing School. She moved to Bismarck, where she worked as a housekeeper for a year and then returned to Rock Lake, where she worked at the Rock Lake Cafe. She married
Charles Brown on July 4, 1943, in Cando. They farmed the Brown farm until 1947, when they moved to Buhl, Idaho, where she worked for Green Giant, Shields Beanhouse, cleaned homes and had several other jobs. She moved to Seattle in 1982 and then to Salem, Ore., in 1984. She returned to Cando in 1993.
She is survived by a sister, Jean (John) Cose, Egeland, N.D.
She was preceded in death by an infant sister; and her companion, Ernest Scorgie.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando.
Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until services Thursday in the funeral home.
Burial: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Rock Lake.
John Werner
John Werner, 32, Detroit Lakes, Minn., formerly of Grand Forks, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at home.
John P. Werner was born Dec. 21, 1967, the son of Arnold and Kathleen (Werner) Herald, in Sacramento. He lived in Sacramento, Anchorage, Alaska, and Grand Forks. He graduated from high school in Grand Forks. He returned to Sacramento. He married
Carol VanFossen on Dec. 30, 1989, in Sacramento, where they lived. In 1993, they moved to Detroit Lakes. He attended Northwest Technical College, Detroit Lakes and worked as a transportation generalist senior with the survey department of the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Kayla, Krystal, and Kellie, all at home; his father, Newport, Ky.; and his mother, Detroit Lakes.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Kelly Herald.
Services: 1 p.m. Monday, Trinity Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, David-Donehower Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery.
Ethel Nielsen
CROOKSTON -- Ethel Nielsen, 94, Crookston, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston.
Ethel Slager was born May 14, 1906, the daughter of Jake and Junia (Von Wald) Slager, in Tolley, N.D. She moved with her family to Holt, Minn., where she attended school. She moved to Red Lake Falls, where she attended high school. She later moved to Westby, Mont., where she attended high school. She returned to Minnesota and lived in Euclid, Minn. She married
Clarence Nielsen on March 2, 1927, in Crookston. They lived and farmed in Euclid. She worked at the St. Francis Hospital, Crookston, from 1958 until 1970. In the mid 1960s they moved into Crookston. Clarence Nielsen died April 30, 1987.
She is survived by sons, Leroy (Anna), Baudette, Minn., Dr. Andrew (Thea), Oakview, Calif., Clarence Jr. (Janet), Pinellas Park, Fla., Richard (Bebe), Newnan, Ga., and Lester (June), Plymouth, Minn.; daughters, Elaine (Dit) Ditlovson, Jacksonville, Fla., LaVonne Amundson, Superior, Wis., and Else (Denny) Hagen, Lakeville, Minn.; 26 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Chester, Crookston.
She was preceded in death by a son, Melvin; a grandson; a brother, Henry; and a sister, Mildred Owens.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Crookston.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
Bessie Strebig
CROOKSTON -- Bessie "Betsy" Strebig, 68, Crookston, formerly of Oklee, Minn., died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Bessie Sannes was born June 9, 1932, the daughter of Theodore and Amanda (Steiner) Sannes, in Crookston. She grew up and attended school near Oklee. She married
Willfred Ostlund in Crookston. They lived in East Grand Forks, Crookston, and Effie, Minn. She married
Wayne Strebig in Grand Forks. They lived in East Grand Forks.
She is survived by children, Diane Ostlund, Dallas, Madonna (Robert) Combs, Anchorage, Alaska, David Ostlund, Hollywood, Fla., Tim (Linda) Ostlund, Crookston, Holly Peterson, Nielsville, Minn., and Sheldon Ostlund, Effie; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Kim; her parents; sisters; and brothers.
Memorial services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Johnson Funeral Service, Oklee.
Sharon Mutu
DRAYTON, N.D. -- Sharon A. Mutu, 57, formerly of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Drayton, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Valley Memorial Woodside, Grand Forks.
Sharon Ann Anderson was born July 6, 1943, the daughter of Arnold and Alice (Widstrand) Anderson, in Drayton. She grew up in Teien Township, Kittson County, Minn. She attended high school in Kennedy, Minn. She graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, in May 1965. She taught school in Fosston, Minn. She moved to Colorado Springs, where she worked for 30 years. She married
Robert Mutu in July 1970.
She is survived by her mother, Alice (Glenn) Anderson-Kerr, Drayton; and sisters, Delayne (Jim) Halcrow, Drayton, and Janeen (David) Schubert, Glendale, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Services: 2: 30 p.m. Saturday, Skjeberg Lutheran Church, Drayton.
Prayer Service: 7: 30 p.m. today, Adamson-Austin Funeral Home, Drayton. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association.
Pauline McAlonen
BEMIDJI -- Pauline McAlonen, 93, Bemidji, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bemidji.
Pauline Alice Belair was born Jan. 4, 1907, the daughter of Oliver and Emma (Verbonceur) Belair, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. She moved with her family to Bemidji in 1920, where she attended high school. She worked at Elko Hat and Dress Shop in Bemidji for 15 years as a salesperson. During World War II, she moved to San Francisco, where she worked in the security guard office at a defense plant. She married
John McAlonen on Feb. 18, 1944, in San Francisco. In 1945, they moved to Queens, N.Y. John McAlonen died Oct. 2, 1955. In November 1955, she moved to Bemidji. She worked at O'Meara's Clothing Store for 25 years as a salesperson. She retired in 1980.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen (Orrin) Skretvedt, Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lucille Berger, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Orville, Morris and Martin; and a sister, Hazel Fehling.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, St. Philip's Catholic Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Bemidji. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association.
