Helmi Haapoja
ROLLA, N.D. -- Helmi H. Haapoja, 90, Rolla, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, in Maple Manor, Langdon, N.D.
Helmi Helen Parvey was born Dec. 15, 1910, the daughter of Paul and Sophie (Toivonen) Parvey, in Perth, N.D., where she attended school. She married
Emil Haapoja on Oct. 27, 1927, in Perth. They later moved to Rolla. Emil Haapoja died Aug. 9, 1987. She moved to Rolette, N.D., and later to Langdon.
She is survived by daughters, Carol McDonald, Langdon, and Marlene (Robert) Jorgenson, Rugby, N.D.; a son, William (Vonda), Thief River Falls; a daughter-in-law, Estelle Haapoja, St. Charles, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Verna Trent and Elsie Nussbuetal, both of Detroit.
She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth; a son-in-law, Kayo; sisters, Elma Huovinen and Mayme Bakkila; and brothers, Oscar, Charley, Arne, Arthur, and Wilfred.
Services: 1 p.m. today, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rolla.
Visitation: 9 to 10 a.m. today, Niewoehner Funeral Home, Rolla, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Mount View Cemetery, Rolla.
Gilman Hovland
HILLSBORO, N.D. -- Gilman D. Hovland, 100, Fargo, formerly of Hillsboro, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, in Villa Maria, Fargo.
Gilman D. Hovland was born March 3, 1900, the son of John and Brita (Wallager) Hovland, near Blanchard, N.D. He farmed on the family farm. In 1920, he began working for Peavey Lumber Company, Mayville, N.D. He married
Amy Forde on Jan. 10, 1923, in Moorhead. They lived near Hillsboro. He worked for Peavey Lumber Company, Hillsboro, and later managed Peavey Elevator, Hillsboro. In 1950, they moved to Fargo. He was the regional manager for Peavey Elevator Company until retiring in 1965. Amy Hovland died in 1993.
He is survived by sons, Duane (Joyce), Fargo, James (Helen), Hopkins, Minn., and Curtis, Burnsville, Minn.; and two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by a son, John; two brothers; and four sisters.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, First Lutheran Church, Fargo.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, and one hour before services in the church.
Vernon Nelson
Vernon R. Nelson, 82, 2200 S. 29th St., died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Vernon Raymond Nelson was born March 26, 1918, the son of Palmer and Mary (Botnen) Nelson, near Leeds, N.D., where he attended school. He also attended school in York, N.D. He worked on the family farm and as a farm worker near Fisher, Minn. In 1941, he worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation and Vega Airplane Company, Burbank Calif. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to Grand Forks and worked for Deaconess Hospital as a steam plant operator. Later, he worked for Absey Motor Co. in body and fender repair. He worked for the Great Northern Railway after April 4, 1949. He married
Elizabeth Sjoquist on May 1, 1949, in Grafton, N.D. They lived in Grand Forks until 1974, when they moved to Leeds. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad until he retired in 1979. They returned to Grand Forks in 1984.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mary (The Rev. Tonnes) Pollestad, Andover, Minn.; two granddaughters; and a sister, Myrtle (Walter) Stutrud, Leeds.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Oliver, Martin and Walter; and sisters, Josephine Plaggemeyer, Olga Anderson and Christine Berg.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Trinity Free Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Rugby, N.D.
Kenneth Carlson
FORDVILLE, N.D. -- Kenneth E. "Kenny" Carlson, 76, Fordville, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, in Lutheran Sunset Home, Grafton, N.D.
Kenneth E. Carlson was born Jan. 20, 1924, the son of Swen and Alma (Erickson) Carlson, in Fordville. He graduated from high school in Dahlen, N.D., in 1942. He worked on the family farm with his dad. He married
Carol Baier on Oct. 30, 1954, in Walhalla, N.D. They lived near Fordville.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Fran (Kim), Fosston, Minn.; a daughter, Linda (Blair) Parker, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Vicki (Dennis) Best, Fordville; eight grandchildren; a brother, James (Janet), Richfield, Minn.; and sisters, Betty Allen, Eagen, Minn., Ara (Bob) Morrow and Dorothy (Fred) Pfieffer, Spokane, Wash.
He was preceded in death by a son, Keith "Bubba"; and a sister, Addie Pemone.
Services: 2: 30 p.m. Thursday, Fordville Lutheran Church (Bakke, Fordville).
Floyd Nesseth
Floyd W. Nesseth, 76, 4634 Cherry St., died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at home.
Floyd William Nesseth was born Sept. 3, 1924, the son of Ole and Josephine (Rohr) Nesseth, in Churchs Ferry, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Army from May 23, 1943 to Feb. 2, 1946. He returned to Starkweather, N.D., where he worked as a grain buyer for the Ramsey County Grain Co. and later for Garske (N.D.) Elevator. He married
Viola Neussendorfer on Nov. 25, 1950, in Starkweather. In 1973, they moved to Grand Forks, where he worked as a bookkeeper for General Auto Parts until retiring in 1978.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Cheryl Nesseth and Ann Powers, both of Grand Forks, and Karen (Bruce) Benthien, Dexter, Mo.; sons, Paul, Starkweather, Thomas (Ann Marie), Minneapolis, and James, Fargo; seven grandchildren; and brothers, Rollo (Carol), Minnetonka, Minn., Lyle (Johnnie), Vista, Calif., Ernest (Ruth), Whittier, Calif., and Donald (Genevieve), San Jose, Calif.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Clara and Harriet; and a brother, Harold.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel, S. Washington St., and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks.
Shirley Naas
MCVILLE, N.D. -- Shirley Naas, 73, McVille, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, in Nelson County Health System-Care Center, McVille, where she had lived since 1987.
Shirley Opal Naas was born June 21, 1927, the daughter of Oscar and Selma (Tollefson) Naas, in Warroad, Minn. She moved with her family to Kloten, N.D. In 1983, she moved to Aneta (N.D.) Parkview Health Center.
She is survived by a brother, Lloyd, McVille; a sister, Hazel (Art) Leum, Belgrade, Mont.; and a sister-in-law, Mavis Naas.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Ardell, Orville and Virgil.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Stanley-Iverson Funeral Home, McVille.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Our Saviors Church Cemetery, Kloten.
Janette Helle
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Janette Helle, 99, Thief River Falls, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Red Lake Falls, Minn., where she had lived for the past four years.
Janette Olive Jacobsen was born Aug. 17, 1901, the daughter of Hans and Oline (Christiansen) Jacobsen, in Lankin, N.D. She married
John Helle on Oct. 31, 1923, in Oklee, Minn. They lived in Oklee and Hazel, Minn., before moving to Thief River Falls in 1946. She worked at the Mint Cafe and Catholic Home in Grand Forks. John Helle died Oct. 19, 1975. She lived in Skilite, Valley Home, Convalescent Nursing Care unit of Northwest Medical Center and Oakland Park Nursing Home.
She is survived by children, Laura Cariveau, Lynnwood, Wash., and Alice (Ernie) Thune, Daniel (Zoe), Norman, Lester (Lou), Gerald (Imogene) and Harvey, all of the Thief River Falls area; half sisters, Olga Christianson and Anna "Tootsie" Peterson, both of Grand Forks, and June Morris, in California.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter; sisters, Clara Peterson and Betsy Jacobsen; brothers, Tony and Johan "Melvin"; half brothers, George, Henry, Stanley, Oliver and Frithjof Jacobsen; a son-in-law, Roger Cariveau; and a daughter-in-law, Jeanette Helle.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Green Funeral Home Chapel, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery.
