Elroy Gustafson
Elroy "David" Gustafson, 66, Palm Springs, Calif., formerly of Grand Forks, died in a fire at his home Oct. 13, 2000.
Elroy Gustafson was born Dec. 15, 1933, the son of Theodore and Mabel Gustafson, in Forest River, N.D. He grew up and graduated from high school in Grand Forks. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He moved to California, where he pursued a dancing, singing and acting career and performed in the American Ballet Concert Co. and stage shows in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and theaters throughout the United States and abroad. A knee injury ended his career in show business, but he continued to teach dance and choreograph. He also worked at a floral shop in Palm Springs.
He is survived by brothers, Duane, Hartford, Ky., and Milton, Seattle; sisters, Sally (Roy) Amundson, Grand Forks, Ruth Burt, Norwalk, Calif., and Nell Scott, Seal Beach, Calif.; and his companion, Robert Crowley.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Nels, Tommy, Kermit, Tom and Nils; and sisters, Alpha Scott and Lillian Salisbury.
Services: Will be held Nov. 1 at Forest Lawn, Cypress, Calif.
Emil Burgard
RUGBY, N.D. -- Emil J. Burgard, 75, Rugby, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, in Heart of America Medical Center, Rugby.
Emil J. Burgard was born Sept. 4, 1925, the son of Frank and Ottilla (Hager) Burgard, in Girard Township, Pierce County, N.D., where he attended school. He worked on the family farm and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945. He was discharged in 1946. He returned to the family farm near Orrin, N.D., moved with his family to Leeds, N.D., and then to a farm in Rosedale Township, Pierce County, N.D. He married
Theresa Mitzel on June 6, 1949, in Orrin. They lived and farmed on the family farm.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Larry and Lloyd (Karen), both of Grand Forks, Randy (Mary), Anamoose, N.D., Ron, Rugby, Joe, Gwinner, N.D., Frank, Minot, Emil Jr. (MaryLou), Wheatland, N.D., and Jeff, Phoenix; daughters, Deb (Russ) Jacobson, Rugby, Roslyn (Lawrence) Kitzman, Taylor, N.D., Yvonne (Dave) Larsen, Grand Forks, Carol (Bryon) Miller, Richardton, N.D., and Valerie Burgard, Buchanan, N.D.; 21 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Frank (Katie) in Wisconsin, and Eusabius (Barbara), Rugby; and sisters, Marian (Paul) True, in Minnesota, and Pauline (Frank) Eberle, Terrie Levitt, Dorthea (Leonard) Goetz and Julie Axtman, all of Rugby.
He was preceded in death by a son, Tim; brothers, Tony, Casey, Raymond and Michael; and a sister, Barbara Wolfe.
Services: 11 a.m. today, Little Flower Catholic Church, Rugby.
Visitation: 9 to 10: 30 a.m. today, Anderson Funeral Home, Rugby.
Burial: Church cemetery.
Mary Fickert
MUNICH, N.D. -- Mary Fickert, 74, Roy, Wash., formerly of Munich, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at home.
Mary Fickert was born Aug. 13, 1926, the daughter of Anton and Mary (Stremick) Fickert, in Easby, N.D. She graduated from high school in Munich and attended school in Mayville, N.D. She taught in rural schools throughout North Dakota until 1967, when she moved to Stewart, Minn. She taught school in Stewart until 1977, when she retired from the Minnesota State School system. She moved to Evanston, Wyo., where she taught until 1997. She retired and moved to Roy. She was cared for by her niece, Ellen Hamilton, for the past 21/2 years.
She is survived by her children, Ruthie Piper, Palm Desert, Calif., Leroy, Dodge Center, Minn., and Dean-o, Roy; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, Agnes Kretsch, McHenry, Ill., Annie Hamilton, Roseau, Minn., William and Jake, both of Alsen, N.D., Elizabeth Schwehr, Fargo, and Francis Hamilton, Merryville, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Barbara and Katherine; brothers, John, Louis and Joseph.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Salem Mennonite Church, Munich.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon.
Burial: East Salem Mennonite Cemetery.
Fred Schill
WALHALLA, N.D. -- Fred Schill, 98, Walhalla, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, in Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla, where he had lived since April 1989.
Fred Schill was born Sept. 8, 1902, the son of Charles and Mary (Koehmstedt) Schill, in Mount Carmel, N.D. He farmed in the Mount Carmel, Mowbray and Hannah, N.D., areas until 1934. He moved to Alberta, where he worked in the lumber industry until 1936. He returned to Walhalla, where he worked as a carpenter and on farms until his retirement.
He is survived by sisters, Clara Schill, Walhalla, and Anastasia Decker, Langdon, N.D.; and brothers, the Rev. Victor, Walhalla, and Leonard, Langdon.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Agnes Schill and Irene Klein; and brothers, Lawrence, Walter, Martin, Louis and Raymond Sr.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday, St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla.
Visitation: 7: 30 p.m. rosary service today, in the church.
Burial: St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery
(Nelson, Walhalla).
Wilma Bush
HILLSBORO, N.D. -- Wilma Bush, 76, Hillsboro, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in Hillsboro Medical Center Hospital.
Wilma Bush was born Jan. 1, 1924, the daughter of Martin and Hattie (Elkins) Bush, in Whitefield, Ill. She grew up and attended school in Henry, Ill. She moved to Hillsboro in 1984.
She is survived by nieces.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; and a sister.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, St. John Lutheran Church, Hillsboro.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Henry City Cemetery.
Chester Hove
ADAMS, N.D. -- Chester N. Hove, 86, Adams, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in Unity Medical Center, Grafton, N.D.
Chester N. Hove was born May 2, 1914, the son of Nels and Emma (Johnson) Hove, in Shepherd Township, Walsh County, N.D., where he attended school. He married
Helga Fossen on July 27, 1942. She died in February 1943. He served in the Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1945. He returned home and took over the family homestead. He married
Lillian Peterson on March 20, 1950, in Park River, N.D. They farmed in Shepherd Township until retiring in 1979.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Ron, Edmore, N.D.; daughters, Charlene Flaten, Duluth, Erma (Jon Egil) Lone, Rege, Norway, and JoAnn Hove, Grafton; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Hjalmer, Adams; and a sister, Gladys Olson, Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death by a son, Neil; and a brother, Orald.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, Fairdale.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Tollefson Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Vang Lutheran Cemetery, Fairdale.
Military rites: Qually-Dvorak American Legion Post No. 237 of Adams.
