Benjamin Nord
GRAFTON, N.D. -- Benjamin A. Nord, 76, Grafton, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at home.
Benjamin A. Nord was born July 26, 1924, the son of Henry and Tora (Anderson) Nord, in Mountain, N.D., where he attended school. He graduated from high school in Oregon. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. After his discharge, he returned to St. Thomas, N.D. He married
Helen Wolfgram on Nov. 1, 1947, in Hallock, Minn. He attended Linoleum and Tile School at the Armstrong Linoleum Factory, Lancaster, Pa. He returned to St. Thomas, where he worked for Harold Rustabakke in the store and on his farm. In 1954, they moved to Oregon, where he worked for International Paper Co. In 1956, they moved to Grafton.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Allan, Gerald and Rodney (Gail), all of Grafton; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Thomas (Jean), Pembina, N.D., and Henry, St. Thomas; and sisters, Agnes Barr, Grantsburg, Wis., and Beverly (Arlin) Lofthus, Burlington, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Latraille; brothers, Raymond and Gene; and sisters, Mildred Burger and Betty Burger.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday, St. John's Lutheran Church, St. Thomas.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Tollefson Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
Frayna Braaten
CARRINGTON, N.D. -- Frayna Braaten, 84, Carrington, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in Carrington Health Center.
Frayna Christina Nelson was born July 11, 1916, the daughter of Obert and Carrie (French) Nelson, in Nelson County, N.D. She grew up in Binford, N.D., and attended school in McHenry, N.D. She married
James Braaten on Nov. 27, 1945, in Lakota, N.D. They lived in New Rockford, N.D., where she worked at Swifts Packing. James Braaten died Sept. 21, 1957. She moved to Carrington in 1972. She worked at the Chieftain.
She is survived by sons, Carmon (Sandy), Carrington, and Delbert (Barb), Fargo; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Storkson.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Faith Baptist Church, Carrington.
Visitation: 11 a.m. to 8: 30 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.
Burial: Binford Cemetery.
Hans Sten
DEVILS LAKE -- Hans Sten, 98, Devils Lake, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake, where he had lived since January 2000.
Hans Sten was born Aug. 20, 1902, the son of Ole and Hannah (Slalin) Sten, in Lom, Norway. In 1904, he moved with his family to Ross, N.D., and then to Lawton, N.D., where he attended school. In 1919, they moved to Devils Lake, where he started farming with his father. He married
Klara Berg on June 30, 1936, in Devils Lake. They lived and farmed on his farm until retiring in 1966. In January 1976, they moved to Devils Lake and later to Langdon, N.D., where he lived with his daughter, Sonja, and she moved to Maple Manor Care Center. Klara Sten died Feb. 26, 1995.
He is survived by daughters, Marilynn (Stan) Kruger, Sheyenne, N.D., and Sonja (Bill) Gette, Langdon; a son, Orrson "Oats" (Leona), Devils Lake; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alma Tollefson, Devils Lake.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Melvin and Conrad.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday, St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.
Evelyn Dahlstrom
HILLSBORO, N.D. -- Evelyn Dahlstrom, 88, Hillsboro, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, in Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home, where she had lived since December 1992.
Evelyn Dullum was born April 24, 1912, the daughter of Peder and Matilda (Aadahl) Dullum, in Traill County, N.D., where she attended school. She married
Helge Dahlstrom on Nov. 16, 1935, in Hillsboro. They lived and farmed near Hillsboro. Helge Dahlstrom died June 3, 1982.
She is survived by children, Bryan (Vicki) and Bruce, both of Hillsboro, and Mary (Frank) Rouland, Crownsville, Md.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Phyllis (Ramsey) Johnson, Tacoma, Wash.
She was preceded in death by 16 brothers and sisters.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hillsboro.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Hillsboro.
Marion Kaelin
Marion Kaelin, 86, Los Angeles, formerly of Grand Forks, died Aug. 23, 2000, at home.
Marion Elizabeth Brohman was born Feb. 1, 1914, the daughter of Wendell and Margaret (Marshall) Brohman, in Grand Forks, where she graduated from high school in 1932. She attended UND. She studied to be a beautician with Mrs. Finley at the Ontario Beauty Salon and worked there and at Kato's Beauty Salon, in Grand Forks. She opened Highway Beauty Shop in 1936 and operated it until 1940 with her sister Veronica. She moved to California during World War II, where she worked at Lockheed Aircraft. After the war she owned and operated the Tic Toc Beauty Shop in Alhambra, Calif. She married
Albert Kaelin on Feb. 19, 1950, in Los Angeles.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Bernard (Phyllis), Playa Del Rey, Calif., and Daniel and John (Rose), both of Los Angeles; a daughter, Julie, Los Angeles; and sisters, Margaret De la Torre, Northridge, Calif., and Veronica Gregoire, Grand Forks.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Frank, Wendell, James and William; and sisters, Madeline Jenson and Sister Mary Catherine Brohman.
Services: Were held in All Saints Church, Los Angeles.
Burial: San Gabriel, Calif.
Etta Field
CROOKSTON -- Etta B. Field, 98, Crookston, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.
Etta B. Folkestad was born Dec. 5, 1901, the daughter of Ben and Isabelle (Holland) Folkestad, in Mount Vernon, Wis. She moved to Iowa, where she attended Waldorf Academy, Forest City, Iowa. She attended Lutheran Bible College, Minneapolis. She married
the Rev. Carl Field on Aug. 3, 1930, in Thompson, Iowa. They lived in Litchfield, Gully, Trail, Fisher, and Bygland, Minn., and Hatton, N.D., until residing in East Grand Forks. The Rev. Carl Field died Dec. 8, 1983. She moved to Crookston in 1997.
She is survived by a son, Carl Jr. (Holly), Bluffton, S.C.; daughters, Vivian (Earl) Erickson, Fisher, Mary (Gary) Anderson, Minneapolis, Norma (Richard) Lysne, Elizabeth, Minn., and Carolyn Ponting, Burnsville, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter; a son-in-law, Earl Ponting; and a sister, Rachael.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Fisher (Minn.) Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Fisher Lutheran Cemetery.
