Ruby Schaefer
Ruby Schaefer, 71, of Las Vegas, NV (formerly of Lidgerwood, ND) entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 10, 2015. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 17th at 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm at Bergen Lutheran Church. Funeral service will be Wednesday, February 18th at 10:30 am at Bergen Lutheran Church with Pastor Ivy Schulz officiating. Burial will be at Elk Creek Cemetery
in Wyndmere, ND. Pallbearers are; Seth Hansen, Leigh Hansen, Preston Baus, Dale Strege, Michell Strege and Travis Bauman. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Special music by Chloe & Aubrie Bauman, Simon Wisnewski and Linda Hinrichs.
Ruby Elaine Johnson was born on December 4th, 1943 to Rudolph and Evelyn (Solvick) Johnson in Breckenridge, MN. She was baptized January 9th, 1944 and confirmed in 1957 at Wyndmere Lutheran Church, Wyndmere ND. Ruby attended country schools and graduated in 1961 from Wyndmere High School. After graduation Ruby moved to Duluth, MN where she took some college courses and went to work as a photography assistant at Richards Photography Studio. She was united in marriage to Richard Richards on March 25, 1963. Together they had four children. Ruby completed a course conducted by the society of make-up artists of California and was appointed area distributor by the Vivian Woodard Cosmetic Firm where she received high honors. She was also acknowledged for public speaking, administrative procedures, advertising, promotion, interviewing and teaching fields.
Ruby was active in the head start program in Two Harbors, MN where she lived with her husband and children for several years. She also loved the sport of Curling and was a member of the Duluth Curling Club.
Ruby was united in marriage to Jerome Brown on December 26, 1975 and moved to Lidgerwood, ND. She was active as a member of the Jaycees and a member of Bergen Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She became an Independent Contractor for Home Interiors & Gifts where she received high honors for top sales. Ruby always said a woman’s home should be beautiful and helped many women with their decorating needs. She will be fondly remembered for her creative ideas and the knack for seeing beauty in everything. She also opened up a small gift shop called Granny’s Nook & Cranny, which was located in her home in Lidgerwood. She took pride in customizing decorative items and making each customer feel special and appreciated.
Ruby met John Schaefer and they resided in Lidgerwood for a few years before moving to Las Vegas, NV. They were united in marriage at The Little Chapel of the West on April 14th, 1998 in Las Vegas, NV.
Ruby and John’s favorite pastime was going to yard and estate sales as well as flea markets. Ruby had such a knack for turning trash into treasure! She loved antiques and anything vintage. Ruby also worked as a supervisor at Ross Dress for Less stores. Everyone who knew Ruby loved her and was fascinated with her talents and creative abilities. John passed away on April 13, 2014.
Ruby will be truly missed by all who knew her. She was a wonderful mother and friend. She loved her family, her children and all of her grandchildren meant the world to her. May our gracious Lord and Savior comfort all who loved her.
Ruby is survived by her children; Tami (Corrie) Frankl, Lidgerwood, ND/Las Vegas, NV; Tina Richards, Aberdeen, SD; Teri (Greg) Frank, Chandler, AZ; and Troy (Kris) Richards also of Las Vegas, NV. Four sisters; Ann Strege, Wyndmere, ND; Carol Anderson, Las Vegas, NV; Joan (Kenwood) Peterson, Gwinner, ND and Cindi (Jim) Facey of Wahpeton, ND. Grandchildren are NeTia (Travis) Bauman, Lacy (Ted) Richards, Victoria Richards all of Lidgerwood, ND and Taylor Richards, Chandler, AZ. Seth (Ashley) Hansen, Leigh (Kelsey) Hansen of Lidgerwood, ND. Tessa (Ryan) Meyer, Baxter, MN. Jenny (Trevor) Steen of Aberdeen, SD and Kristen Baus, Watertown, SD. Ruby had 13 great-grandchildren; Christian Siemieniewski, Forman, ND; Chloe & Aubrie Bauman, Lidgerwood, ND; Audrey, Shelbie, Chevelle, Adalyn and Sawyer Hansen, Lidgerwood, ND; Jeovani Suarez and Bensyn Gregoire, Lidgerwood, ND; Gavin, Gabriel and Grayden Meyer, Baxter, MN. Two little girls are due this spring.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents Rudolph and Evelyn (Johnson) Chapa and her husband John Schaefer.
Ruth Bletzer Lugert
Ruth Bletzer Lugert, 88 of rural Mantador, ND passed away Friday, May 20, 2016 at her home. Funeral mass will be Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at 10:30 am at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Mantador with Fr. Peter Anderl as celebrant and burial at Calvary Cemetery, Mantador. Visitation will be Monday, May 23, 2016 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm with a prayer service at 7:30 pm at the Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson, ND. There will also be visitation 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Pallbearers are grandchildren: Mark Lugert, Nathan Lugert, Nicole Murphy, Jarrod Illies, Garrett Illies, Dan Lugert, Kelly Lugert, Alan Lugert, Josh Lugert, Jaysen Gettel, Robert Lugert, Michael Peterson & Bobby Reichel. Organist will be Mary Ellen Krump with special music by Sts. Peter & Paul Choir & St. Philip’s Choir. Memorials may be given to the North Dakota Boys & Girls Ranch, which was her favorite charity.
Ruth Bletzer Lugert was born February 19, 1928, during the depression in Sugar Creek, MO, the daughter of Henry & Marie (Eitze) Bletzer. When she was 6 months old she moved with her family to Wichita, KS and then to Amarillo, TX. At the age of 1 they moved to Merriam, KS. At the age of 4 they moved to a boarding house in Chicago, IL where she met her life - long friend, Charmain. She then moved to Grand Rapids, MI and attended Marywood Catholic School. In 1942 she moved to Kansas City and started working at AT&T on June 11, 1944. On February 20, 1950 Ruth met Erwin Lugert at the Keg while celebrating their birthdays which are on the same day. On July 1, 1950 they were united in marriage at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Kansas City by Fr. William Baskett and in the fall of 1951 they settled on the Lugert Homestead where they had 10 children in 20 years.
Ruth enjoyed bowling, playing softball, cards, trivia and spending time with Erwin at the casino. Throughout the years they took many trips together, one of the most memorable was to Niagara Falls. Ruth was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 65 years: Erwin Lugert, Mantador, ND; 10 children: Mike (Joan) Lugert, Marie (Kim) Griesmann, Caroline (Angelo) Bennetti, Dale (Laura) Lugert, Jeanette (Craig) Erickson, Mark (Hee) Lugert, Paul (Jenny) Lugert, Diane (Bob) Reichel, Jody (Jeff) Lautt & Stephen Lugert; 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, 5 step grandchildren & 1 step great granddaughter.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Henry & Marie Bletzer; sisters: Dorothy Marie Bletzer, Josephine Bletzer, Louise Feebak & Margaret Sitton.
Susanna Herding
Susanna Herding, 92 of Hankinson, ND passed away Sunday, November 22, 2015 at St. Gerard’s Community of Care, Hankinson, ND. Funeral mass will be Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Hankinson, ND with Fr. Scott Sautner as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Hankinson, Visitation will be Tuesday, November 24, 2015 from 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at the Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson, ND. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Pallbearers are her grandsons: Brad Mattson, Terry Mattson, Jeff Heley, Mike Rolstad, Kevin Rolstad, Darren Rolstad, Jeremy Mattson, Travis Mattson, Bill Illies & Norb Illies. Honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters, great grandchildren & great-great grandchildren. Organist will be Mary Ellen Krump with special music by St. Philip’s Choir.
Susanna Bach Herding was the daughter of Louis Bach and Anna Differding. Susie was born September 10, 1923 in LaMars Township near Hankinson, ND. At a young age she moved to a farm west of Fairmount with her parents and went to country school in DeVillo Township. In 1939 she met her husband Louis Herding. They married
on November 26, 1940 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Fairmount, ND. Louis and Susie were blessed with 7 children: Joseph, Joan, Carol, Darlene, Joyce, Mary and Diane. Susie enjoyed many things over the years including ceramics, yardwork, tending to her flowers, bowling, cake decorating, shopping, spending time with her family and going out for a good cup of coffee with her best friend Mary Ann Vellenga. Susie was a member of St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Hankinson, ND and a member of the Ladies Guild.
Susie will be greatly missed by all who loved her and is survived by her daughters: Carol Rolstad, Robinsdale, MN, Darlene (Pat) Illies, Lidgerwood, ND, Mary Mattson, Lidgerwood, ND and Diane (Bob) Mattson, Delano, MN; 20 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Marie (Herb) Beyer and Loretta (Leo) Althoff; her brother: John (Joy) Bach; her sisters-in-law: Joyce Bach and Bernadine (Delmer) Muehler and her brother-in-law: Donald Leinen.
Susie was preceded in death by her husband: Louis Herding; an infant son: Joseph Herding; daughters: Joan Griffith and Joyce Heley; her parents: Louis and Anna Bach; her sisters: Margaret Leinen and Dorothy Schreiber; her brothers: Lawrence Bach and Frank Bach; a grandson: Jason Mattson and a great grandson: Colby Gaukler.
Barbara Ellen Loraas
Barbara Ellen Loraas, 81 of Hankinson, ND formerly of Lidgerwood, ND passed away Saturday, March 14, 2015 at St. Gerard’s Community of Care, Hankinson, ND. Funeral service will be Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Hankinson, ND with burial at United Cemetery, Hankinson. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 17, 2015 from 4-6 p.m. at the Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Barbara Ellen Emde was born on August 8, 1933 in Hankinson, North Dakota, the daughter of Fred & Ella (Gustman) Emde. She grew up in Hankinson and attended school there. After graduating from high school, Barb moved to the Los Angeles, CA area and worked in the banking field for a few years. Barb returned to ND and married
Hans Loraas on May 28, 1955; they then moved to the Loraas farmstead south of Lidgerwood, where they farmed the family farm for many years. While farming with Hans and rearing four children, Barb went back to college part-time and graduated from Valley City State Teacher’s College in 1971. In 1972 she started teaching 6th grade in Veblen, SD where she taught for many years. She then went back to school again to further her teaching skills by getting her Special Education Teaching Certificate. She then transferred to Effington, SD where she taught special education students for years. She retired from teaching in 1994. In 1999, they retired from farming and moved into Lidgerwood by the
Gold Course where Hans continued to operate Mid-American Real Estate. They lived in their house in Lidgerwood until 2004 when Barb moved to St Gerard's Community Nursing Home in Hankinson where she resided until her death. Hans and Barb were life-long members of United Church of Christ in Hankinson, ND.
Barb’s dedication to students and her love of teaching elementary school children spanned more than 20 years. She was honored to be voted “Teacher of the Year” by Lidgerwood’s American Legion Post 84 in 1996. Barbara liked to bowl, golf and travel in their motor home with Hans.
Barb is survived by her husband: Hans Loraas, Hankinson, ND; children: Debra Simdorn (Greg) Hanson, Ames, IA, Cynthia Loraas, Papillion, NE, Robert Loraas, Wahpeton, ND & Sandra Loraas, Casselton, ND; granddaughters: Laura Simdorn (Joe) McComish, Plymouth, MN, Leslie Simdorn (Darin) Gully, Norman, IL, McKenzie Loraas, Wahpeton, ND & Amber Loraas, Papillion, NE; great grandchildren: Ian McComish, Plymouth, MN and Ava & Savannah Gully, Norman, IL; brothers: Harry (Janice) Emde, Hankinson, ND, Ronald (Barbara) Emde, Racine, WI & Donald (Kathy) Emde, Blue Grass, IA.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Fred & Ella Emde; brother: Fred Emde, Jr. & sister: Ramona Nelson.
Sister Carolyn Althoff OSF
Funeral services for Sister M. Carolyn Althoff, OSF will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, St. Francis Convent, Hankinson, ND. Visitation will be Friday 2:30-4:30 with a prayer service at 7 p.m., also in the Chapel. Tuesday March 1, Sister Carolyn peacefully passed into eternity and into the loving arms of God. She was 98 years old and in June 2016 she would have celebrated 80 years as a consecrated religious. She was a resident of St. Gerard’s Community of Care, Hankinson, since the fall of 2015. As her cancer progressed she was in need of more skilled care.
Sister M. Carolyn Althoff, OSF was born June 19, 1917 to John and Lena Althoff of Mooreton, ND. She was one of 11 children, seven girls and four boys. In 1930, she entered St. Francis Convent as a Candidate. After graduating from St. Francis Academy she made her Novitiate in 1935 and her first Profession of Vows August 13, 1936. Teaching was the main profession of Sister Carolyn (Sister Mary John) for over 50 years. She attended several teachers colleges and received her BA from Alverno College, Milwaukee, WI and her Master degree in Administration in Education from Moorhead State University, MN. She taught in a number of ND schools including Pisek, Karlsruhe, Wahpeton, Oakes, Hankinson, Grand Forks, Rugby and Mount Carmel. During her 50 years in education she taught both elementary and high school and was Principal for 11 years. Sister Carolyn also was a Parish Worker and Director of the Religious Education program in Cando, ND 1983-92. Following her time in Cando Sr. Carolyn worked as receptionist for 16 years at St. Anne’s Guest Home in Grand Forks. She returned home to the Provincial House in Hankinson in 2007. Though retired she continued to do secretarial work and to help out in the library.
Sister Carolyn is survived by her Dillingen Franciscan Sisters, two brothers, Leo (Loretta) Althoff, Hankinson; Joseph (Virginia) Althoff, California and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lena Althoff, her sisters Martha Althoff in infancy, Marie (Althoff) Heppers, Sister Angeline (Clara) Althoff, Rosalia (Althoff) Killian, Loretta (Althoff) Bernard and Dorothy (Althoff) German; her brothers Aloysius Althoff, and Lawrence Althoff.
Dorothy German
Dorothy German, 96 of Hankinson, ND passed away Sunday, January 10, 2016 at St. Gerard’s Community of Care, Hankinson, ND. Funeral mass will be Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Hankinson, ND with Fr. Armand (Bud) Brooks as celebrant. Burial will be in the spring at Calvary Cemetery, Hankinson, ND. Visitation will be Friday, January 15, 2016 from 5-7 pm with a prayer service led by Deacon James Hunt at 7:00 pm all at the Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson, ND. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the mass on Saturday at the church. Organist will be Beth Tiegs with special music by St. Philip’s Church Choir.
Dorothy German was born September 29, 1919 in Mooreton, ND, the daughter of John and Magdalena (Martini) Althoff. Dorothy worked at St. Mary’s Home, Sleepy Eye, MN and at St. Mary’s Hospital, Wahpeton, ND as a LPN. On September 12, 1951 she was united in marriage to Joseph German at St. John’s Catholic Church, Wahpeton, ND. After their marriage they farmed near Hankinson, ND until the spring of 1984 when they retired. In 1986 they moved into Hankinson. Joe passed away on April 17, 2009 and Dorothy moved into St. Gerard’s Community of Care, Hankinson.
Dorothy was a member of St. Philip’s Catholic Church. Her husband Joe said that Dorothy was the best wife he could ever ask for and a very good mother to their children.
She is survived by her daughter: Anne Whelan, Aberdeen, SD; sons-in-law: Jerome Hohertz, Cooperstown, ND & Jack Lepp, Wahpeton, ND; daughter-in-law: Gloria Hubrig, Hankinson, ND; brothers: Leo (Loretta) Althoff, Hankinson, ND & Joseph (Virginia) Althoff, California; sister: Sister Carolyn Althoff, Hankinson, ND; nine grandchildren & twelve great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband: Joseph, son: Alan German; daughters: Mary Lepp & Jane Hohertz, sisters: Sister M. Angeline (Clara) Althoff, O.S.F., Loretta Bernard, Marie Kreppers & Rosalia Killian and brothers: Lawrence Althoff & Aloysius Althoff.
Estella "Stella" Tosse
God called Stella to her eternal home on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at St. Gerard’s Community of Care surrounded by her daughters. Funeral services for Estella Tosse will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Bergen Lutheran Church, Lidgerwood, ND at 2:30 pm. Stella will be inurned next to her husband at Bergen Cemetery, rural Lidgerwood, ND. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, all who called her friend and the staff at St. Gerard’s.
Estella (Stella) Caroline Tosse was born May 25, 1921. She was adopted by Phillip and Sophie (Adermann) Yagow when she was two years old. They lived on a farm by Milnor, ND at the time. When Stella was eight they moved to the Alexandria, MN area where Stella attended parochial school and played violin in the school orchestra. In 1942 the family moved back to the farm by Milnor and she met and married
Milton Tosse on October 8, 1944 at rural Zion Lutheran Church, Gwinner, ND. Milton and Estella lived on a farm in Marboe Township south of Geneseo, ND for 42 years where they raised their five children. In 1986 they moved into Lidgerwood, ND. They lived there until entering Four Seasons Health Care in 2001. Her husband of 59 years Milton, passed away in 2003. Stella then moved to the Rosholt Care Center and lastly St. Gerard’s Community of Care.
Stella lived a life of faith and was an active member of Bergen Church over the years. She delighted in reading God’s word and found strength and encouragement. Stella loved to sing and play the organ. She was blessed to be able to play by ear and many sing-a-longs were held in their home with the old hymns as favorites. Stella weathered many of life’s storms and made the most of life relying on her faith. She liked to have fun and found pleasure in garage sales, bingo, playing cards with friends, making donuts and drinking hot coffee and selling Avon. She enjoyed plants especially African violets and geraniums. She worked a short time at Dakotah in Veblen and also at Dakota Estates where she enjoyed the residents. While living in care centers the last 15 years she made many friends along the way and many memories were made.
Stella loved her family dearly and she will be missed by her daughters: Elaine Marlow, Veblen, SD, Donna Bucklin, Browns Valley, MN, Marlene (Gerald) Balvin, Claire City, SD and Bryan, Breckenridge, MN; along with grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Milton, son Merlyn, grandson Christopher Bucklin, sister Jeanne Jentz and brother-in-law Ray Jentz.
The family would like to sincerely thank St. Gerard’s Community of Care for their loving and compassionate care they provided for Stella for the last 8 years. Your kindness will always be remembered. God Bless.
Ethel J. Dunn
Ethel J. Dunn, 87 of Lidgerwood, ND passed away Monday, June 20, 2016 at St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckenridge, MN. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 26, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Bergen Lutheran Church, Lidgerwood, ND with Pastor Harvey Henderson officiating. Inurnment will be at Bergen Cemetery, rural Lidgerwood. Organist will be Curt Brownlee.
Ethel (Berg) Dunn was born in Sargent County to Mens and Anna (Helmer) Berg on December 15, 1928. She attended grade school at Marboe Co. #1 in Sargent County. She was baptized and confirmed at rural Bergen Lutheran Church and graduated from Lidgerwood High School in 1946. Ethel worked locally at a grocery store until January 22, 1948 when she married
Donald Dunn.
They together had 3 sons: Larry, Bob & Steve and lived on a farm in Marboe Township until 1982 when they moved into Lidgerwood. Donald continued to work for several seed companies until June 10, 2006 when he passed away.
Donald and Ethel had 7 grandchildren & 12 great grandchildren, which they enjoyed very much.
Ethel enjoyed sewing & crocheting. She made many quilts & afghans that have been passed down to family. Many quilts were made for Church World Relief.
Ethel is survived by her three sons: Larry Dunn, Arthur, ND, Bob (Bonnie) Dunn, Lidgerwood, ND & Steve (Alane) Dunn, Lidgerwood, ND; 5 grandchildren: Lisa (Craig) Hayes, Alan (Kadanne) Dunn, Valerie (Troy) Heilman, Daniel (Jessica) Dunn & Amanda Dunn; 12 great grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law: Harriet Berg, Veblen, SD & Cleo Lugert, Hankinson, ND; brother-in-law: John Kiefer, Washington and many nieces & nephews, whom she considered to be the best in the world.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Mens & Anna Berg; husband: Donald Dunn; 2 brothers: Mens Berg, Jr. & Orville Berg; 3 sisters: Hazel (Vic) Wacha, Lillian (Claude) Wollitz & Adeline (George) Owens; sister-in-law: Doris (John) Kiefer; brother-in-law: David Dunn and 2 grandsons: Adam & Andy Dunn.
