Joyce Mattson
GRAFTON, N.D. -- Joyce M. Mattson, 71, Grafton, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, in Unity Medical Center, Grafton.
Joyce M. Larson was born July 3, 1929, the daughter of Roy and Antoinette (Campeau) Larson, in St. Thomas, N.D., where she graduated from high school in 1948. She married
Arlen "Buck" Mattson on June 5, 1948, in St. Thomas. She worked as a nurse's aid at St. Joseph's Hospital, the Deaconess Hospital and the State Developmental Center, all in Grafton. Arlen Mattson died Feb. 13, 1974.
She is survived by sons, Timothy (Patty), Menoken, N.D., Dennis (Jean) and Patrick, both of Grafton, and Terry (Judy), St. Thomas; daughters, Gail (Tim) Belland, Drake, N.D., Rita Dvorak, Grafton, and Susan (Steve) Schiebe, Sharon, N.D.; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Henry (Linda), Park River, Don (Phyllis), Grafton, and Randy, Buxton, N.D.; and sisters, Ann (Harlan) Thompson, Grafton, Lois (Joe) Chounard, Champagne, Ill., and Eileen (Paul) Siewert, Buxton.
She was preceded in death by a son, Wayne; and brothers, Roy and an infant.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, with a 4: 30 p.m. prayer service, Henriksen-Kamrowski Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Landstad Cemetery, Auburn, N.D.
Sister Christine Johnson
CROOKSTON -- Sister Christine Johnson, 82, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.
Christine Johnson was born Oct. 7, 1918, the daughter of Hjalmar and Betsy (Palgren) Johnson, in Crookston, where she graduated from high school in 1936. While taking music lessons from the Sisters at St. Joseph Academy, she became a convert to Catholicism. She joined the congregation four years later. On April 24, 1941, she received the garb of the Sisters and her name of Sister Marie Christine. She made her novitiate in Crookston, her first vows on Aug. 10, 1942, and final vows on Aug. 13, 1945. She began correspondence courses in business law and insurance from the University of Louisiana, then a five year correspondence course in advanced accounting with International Accountants Society, Chicago. She attended workshops in religious archives at Bergamo Center, Dayton, Ohio. In 1968, she began her career as a secretary at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Crookston, and also as archivist in 1986.
She is survived by a brother, Howard "Hap, " Bemidji; and a brother-in-law, Merriam "Hans" Hanson, Crookston.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Joyleen Hanson; and a brother, Donald.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Chapel of the Marywood Residential Community, Crookston.
Visitation: One hour before services in the chapel.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Crookston (Stenshoel-Houske, Crookston).
Henry Mack
NEKOMA, N.D. -- Henry Mack, 70, Nekoma, died in a traffic accident on Aug. 18, 2000, near Bemidji, along with his brother, Stanley.
Henry Levi Mack was born March 12, 1930, the son of Henry Sr. and Mary (Silvernagel) Mack, in Jamestown, N.D. He grew up near Pettibone, N.D. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He married
Elizabeth Dukart on Feb. 26, 1957, in Medina, N.D. They lived in Nekoma, where he worked as a pipefitter/welder on construction jobs. He retired in 1996.
He is survived by his wife; children, Keith (Pauline), Langdon, Kevin and Kristopher, both of Fargo, Karen (Ed) Liebersbach, Fordville, N.D., Kelvin (Karla), Esko, Minn., Kelly (Tracey), Warwick, N.D., Kurtis (Reaba) Edmore, N.D., Kurt (Ann), Knoxville, Tenn., and Kori, Grand Forks; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters; and four brothers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Kenneth; a brother, Peter; and sisters, Leopoldina Schumacher and Anna.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon. A 7: 30 p.m. Wednesday prayer service, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Edwards Cemetery, Nekoma.
George Schultz
MINOT -- George Schultz, 84, Minot, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, in Trinity Nursing Homes, Minot, where he had lived since 1999.
George Henry Schultz was born Feb. 23, 1916, the son of Ernest and Lillian (Wigand) Schultz, in White Ash Township, Renville Country, N.D. He graduated from high school in Kenmare, N.D. He graduated from the State School of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. He worked in Chicago and returned to Crosby, N.D., where he worked for John Iverson Co. as a radio repairman. He married
Ava Doughty on Oct. 28, 1940, in Plentywood, Mont. He started Crosby Electric, which he operated until 1957. He moved to Minot and started George Schultz Electric, which became Schultz Electric Inc. Ava Schultz died May 18, 1973. He retired in 1983. He married
Yvonne Erickson. She died in 1988.
He is survived by children, Suellen Palya, Grand Forks, Linda (Michael) Muma, Auburn, Wash., Charles (Deborah) and Peggy (Ronald) Walter, both of Minot, and Loretta (Joseph) Askew, Fargo; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Boyd, Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by a son, Orville; a son-in-law, Roy Palya; a brother, Orville; and a sister, Gladys Schultz.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Saint Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, in the church.
Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot (Niewoehner, Rugby).
Richard Velleu
Richard Velleu, 71, St. Paul, formerly of Grand Forks, died Sept. 3, 2000, at home.
Richard Barry Velleu was born in 1929, the son of Ellen Barry and Ingvald Velleu, in Grand Forks. He grew up and graduated from high school in Rochester, Minn., in 1947. He attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., graduating in 1951. He worked for 3M for 17 years.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; sons, David (Danene Verner), Deltona, Fla., and Richard (Joy Jacobson), Mamaroneck, N.Y.; three grandsons; and a sister, Marian (Jule) Block, Rochester.
He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas.
Services: Were held in St. Paul.
Burial: Roselawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Rochester Public Schools Foundation, Allina Hospice.
Lois Beckley
BORDULAC, N.D. -- Lois M. Beckley, 68, Bordulac, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington, N.D.
Lois Marie Siebert was born Jan. 12, 1932, the daughter of Roy and Elenora (Mehring) Siebert, in Edmunds, N.D. She moved with her family to Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. They returned, and she attended school in Bordulac and Edmunds. She married
Percy Beckley on Oct. 27, 1956, in Bordulac, where they farmed. She was a charter member of the Bordulac "Singing and Swinging Homemakers" Club. She wrote for the Foster County Independent newspaper. She worked for Pipestem Creek and Kensal (N.D.) Cafe.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Daryle, Dan (Lisa), both of Bordulac, and Dean (Darla), Kensal; daughters, Charlotte (Alan) Bachmeier, Carrington, and Carmen (Steve) Wick, Woodworth, N.D.; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; a brother, Roy (Lois), Jamestown, N.D.; and sisters, Shirley (Ron) Hambrick, Carrington and Patricia (Einar) Ellingson, Glenfield, N.D.
She was preceded in death by a grandchild and her parents.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 8: 30 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.
Burial: Carrington Cemetery.
