Hilma Volstad
COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- Hilma Volstad, 98, Fargo, formerly of Cooperstown, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, in Manor Care Nursing Home, Fargo, where she had lived since January 1995.
Hilma Wisdahl was born June 7, 1902, the daughter of Nels and Ann (Brendal) Wisdahl, in Starbuck, Minn. She moved with her family to Sherwood, N.D., where she attended school. In 1918, she moved to Cooperstown. She married
Tor Volstad on Nov. 30, 1921, in Cooperstown. They lived and farmed in Cooperstown. Tor Volstad died Aug. 16, 1935. She moved to Clearbrook, Minn., in 1952, and later to California and Seattle. In 1990, she moved to Fargo.
She is survived by a son, Torry (Viola), Clearbrook; a daughter, Clara (Burton) Branrud, Fargo; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Oliver, Sun City, Ariz., Herman (Hildred), Aberdeen, S.D., and Ralph (Deloise), Lynnwood, Wash.; and sisters, Tina Emmel, Kenmare, N.D., and Helen (Chester) Carruthers, Everett, Wash.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Thursday, Zion Lutheran Church, Cooperstown.
Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. today, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Westley Cemetery, Cooperstown.
Sophie Maddock
DEVILS LAKE -- Sophie M. Maddock, 93, Devils Lake, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, in the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake, where she had lived since 1994.
Sophie Marie Tuchscherer was born Nov. 19, 1906, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Burgart) Tuchscherer, in Berwick, N.D. She moved to Devils Lake in 1923. She worked for the North Dakota School for the Deaf and Ramsey County Sheriff as a cook. She also worked in several restaurants as a cook. She married
John Maddock on Dec. 1, 1934, in Devils Lake, where they lived. He died Dec. 3, 1945. She baby-sat for several families.
She is survived by sons, John "J.J." (Barbara), Kent, Wash., and Patrick (Susan), Grand Forks; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers; and five sisters.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. rosary and vigil service, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake.
Burial: Little Flower Catholic Cemetery, Rugby, N.D. Memorials are suggested to Recreational Fund at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Nora Alveshere
YORK, N.D. -- Nora Alveshere, 77, York, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, in Heart of America Medical Center, Rugby, N.D.
Nora Frovig was born March 17, 1923, the daughter of Ole and Ida (Eilertson) Frovig, in Wilming-¨ton, Calif. They moved to Manfred, N.D., where she attended school. She moved to Sacra-¨mento, Calif., and worked in several factories. She married
Ward Alveshere on May 25, 1953, in Salinas, Calif. They farmed near Harlow, N.D. They later lived in Arizona, Churchs Ferry, N.D., and Devils Lake, before returning to the farm near Harlow.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Noreen (Gaylen) Halstensgaard, Milnor, N.D.; two grandchildren; and sisters, Cora Freeman, Salinas, Irene Koenig, Santa Rosa, Calif., Fern Bradley, American Canyon, Calif., and Ella Alveshere, Harlow.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Oliver; and sisters, Lena Alveshere and Pearl Carlson.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock, N.D.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and before services all in the funeral home.
Burial: Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, Harlow.
Malfred Lund
MANVEL, N.D. -- Malfred E. "Fritz" "Slug" Lund, 79, Spokane, Wash., formerly of Manvel, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000.
Malfred Lund was born April 29, 1921, the son of Magel and Elene Lund, in Manvel, where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He retired from Burlington Railroad after 30 years as a painter and carpenter. He married
Audrey Allen on May 18, 1957.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Malfred Jr. and Arthur, both of Spokane; and a brother, Alex, Spokane.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Martin and Arthur; and sisters, Bertha, Anna and Thora.
Graveside services: 11 a.m. today, Pinecrest Memorial Park, Sandpoint, Idaho.
Mendie Benson
MADDOCK, N.D. -- Mendie F. Benson, 85, Maddock, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at home.
Mendie Fillmore Benson was born March 5, 1915, the son of Hans and Anna Benson, in Hesper Township, Benson County, N.D., where he attended school. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 during World War II and served until 1945. He married
Vera Nilson on Nov. 28, 1945. They lived on the family farm where he helped his father farm and worked at the Maddock elevator. He later took over the family farm. They spent winters in Arizona.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Rodger (Sharon), Maddock; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Effie Swanson, Maddock, Ruth Nesset, Prescott, Ariz., and Dagney (Wayne) Knowlton, Mankato, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert; and brothers, Henry and Arthur.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Church cemetery.
Military rites: Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post No. 123 of Maddock.
Fred Peerson
HILLSBORO, N.D. -- Fred Peerson, 96, Hillsboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, in Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home.
Fred M. Peerson was born Oct. 16, 1904, in Nielsville, Minn. He attended school in Bingham Township, N.D. He worked at a logging camp in Washington and then returned to Nielsville, where he managed the Standard Oil Co. station. He moved to Hillsboro in the late 1920s and began working at Hillsboro Auto Co. He married
Caroline Schultz on Jan. 3, 1929, in Moorhead. In the early 1930s, they returned to Nielsville, where he opened his own garage, which was destroyed in a fire in the late 1930's. He moved to Hillsboro to work at Hillsboro Auto. During World War II, he moved to California and worked for Lockheed Air and Sausalito Shipyards until returning to Hillsboro in 1945. Caroline Peerson died April 4, 1951. He married
Alice Meyer on Oct. 25, 1952. He was superintendent of utilities in Hillsboro.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Floyd (Margaret), Renton, Wash.; a daughter, Ardys (Dan) Olgaard, Fargo; stepson, Donald (Ann) Meyer, Spokane, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Dorothy (Roy) Rewitzer, New Ulm, Minn.; six grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hillsboro.
Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Hillsboro.
Gladys Brittan
HONEYFORD, N.D. -- Gladys Brittan, Garden Grove, Calif., formerly of Honeyford, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, in Garden Grove.
Gladys Carlson was born the daughter of Axel and Kate Carlson in Honeyford. She left in the early 1940's and moved to California, where she joined the WAVES. She married
Herbert Brittan. They lived in Garden Grove.
She is survived by sons, Wiley, New York and Rallin, California; a sister, Donna Hammond, San Diego; and brothers, Delbert, Georgia, and Lloyd and Edward, both of California.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and a brother, Raymond.
Services: Were held in California.
