Donald Shuman
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Donald Shuman, 86, Thief River Falls, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
Donald Van Shuman was born Nov. 11, 1913, the son of Frederick and Lora (Jordon) Shuman, in Antler, N.D., where he graduated from high school in 1932. He married
Olga Salte on June 11, 1938, in Devils Lake. They lived in Antler, where they owned and operated Shuman's Bar until 1943 when they moved to Richmond, Calif., where they lived for three years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his discharge they returned to Antler and resumed operation of their bar for a total of 47 years. They retired in 1982. In 1997 they moved to Thief River Falls.
He is survived by his wife; a brother, Ross (Delores), Vancouver, Wash.; and a sister-in-law, Frances Shuman, Devils Lake.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Cecile DesLauriere and Lois Hess; and a brother, L. W. "Bill".
Services: 5 p.m. Friday, Green Funeral Home Chapel, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: Noon to 5 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Military rites: Thief River Falls VFW.
Jerome Hotten
WALES, N.D. -- Jerome "Joe" Hotten, 85, Brandon, Miss., formerly of Wales, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Rankin Medical Center, Brandon.
Jerome Hotten was a native of Wales. He moved to Brandon and lived there for 32 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant.
He is survived by his wife, Jerry Hotten; daughters, Sherry (Ed) Edwards and Ruby (Kenny) Griffin, both of Greenville, Miss., Frances Berry, Dallas, and Missy (Blake) Wallece, Minneapolis; a son, Jimmy (Martha), Roswell, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jim, Hallock, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jerry Floyd.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Baldwin-Lee Chapel, Pearl, Miss.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, and noon to 2 p.m. Monday, both in Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home, Pearl.
Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Brandon. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association P.O. Box 16808, Jackson, Miss., 39236.
Albert Horner
ESMOND, N.D. -- Albert J. Horner, 75, Esmond, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, in Trinity Medical Center, Minot.
Albert John Horner was born Oct. 2, 1925, the son of Jacob and Theresia (Bleth) Horner, in Wing, N.D. He moved with his family to Glen Ullin, N.D. He graduated from high school in Pettibone in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was discharged in 1946 and became a partner in Horner and Horner U-Save, Esmond. He married
Florence Leier on Nov. 24, 1953, in Esmond. He closed the store in 1975. He then worked at a furniture store in Fessenden, N.D., sold insurance, worked for Glickson's Men's Store, Devils Lake, C&R; Lounge, Esmond, and PJ's, Esmond. He was mayor of Esmond in 1953. Florence Horner died Aug. 6, 2000.
He is survived by a son, Steven (Carol), Bismarck; daughters, Nancy (Rick) Roberson, Huntsville, Ala., Shirley Horner, Monroe, La., Pat (Walt) Koenig, Springfield, Vt., and Connie Belgarde, Minot; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; sisters, Renil Hansen, Devils Lake, Rose Owns, Wadsworth, Ohio, and Margaret Marthe, Esmond; and sisters-in-law, Willy Horner, Portland, Ore., and Geraldine Horner, Chicago.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Edward and Theodore.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Boniface Catholic Church, Esmond.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. today, Nelson Funeral Home, Esmond, and after 6: 30 p.m., with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service and rosary in the church.
Burial: Church Cemetery.
Military rites: Esmond VFW Post No. 4251 and Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post No. 123 of Maddock.
Lucille Furbur
HAMPDEN, N.D. -- Lucille Furbur, 83, Hampden, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at home.
Mary Lucille Jones was born Dec. 8, 1916, the daughter of Ernest and Mary Capitola Brown Jones, in Spring Valley, Wis. She grew up and attended school in El Paso, Wis. She graduated from Spring Valley Teachers College, where she received a teaching certificate. She began teaching in Wisconsin. She married
Grant Furbur on June 5, 1939, in Devils Lake. They lived on his home farm, near Hampden. She began teaching at West Royal Township School in 1948, and the East Royal Township School in 1949. She was a substitute at the Alsen (N.D.) School and later became a full-time teacher. She retired after 27 years at the Alsen School. They lived on the farm until 1986 when they moved into Hampden. Grant Furbur died Jan. 15, 2000.
She is survived by sons, James (Marva), Columbus, Neb., and John, Devils Lake.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Leslie.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Zoar Free Lutheran Church, Hampden.
Visitation: 4 to 9 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. family service, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Storlie Cemetery, Hampden.
Naomi Swedmark
BEMIDJI -- Naomi Swedmark, 75, Bemidji, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at home.
Naomi Mae Peterson was born April 11, 1925, the daughter of Fred and Marie (Andrews) Peterson, in Carrington, N.D. She moved with her family to Guthrie, Minn., where she attended school. She graduated from high school in Bemidji in 1943. She trained at the old North School and in Minneapolis before moving to Chester, Pa. She worked for Ford Motor Co. during the war effort for the Army Signal Corps. She married
Chet Swedmark in 1944 in Bemidji. She traveled to California to work near where he was stationed in the Army. After the war, he joined her in Bemidji. They owned Swedmark Hardware, where she was office manager. She also ran a Garden Center. She attended Bemidji State College where she studied English. They spent winter months in Mesa, Ariz.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Sharon (Tom) Jordan, Collbran, Colo., Julie (John) Cook, Mesa, and Anne (Jon) Sand, Bemidji; five grandchildren; and a sister, Fayetta (Virgil) Silverthorn, Bemidji.
Memorial services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Bethel Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji. John Boese
BEMIDJI -- John G. "Jack" Boese, 59, Bemidji, formerly of Crystal, Minn., died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000.
John G. Boese was born July 19, 1941, the son of Donald and Mildred (Bakken) Boese, in Grand Forks County. He graduated from high school in Grand Forks in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 15, 1960, to Sept. 14, 1966. He married
Carol Bakke on Aug. 8, 1964 in Mayville, N.D. He had been working at Bemidji Tire & Auto.
He is survived by his wife; children, Teri Aultman, Brian Aultman, Dawn "Babes" (Glen) Neuburger, Kelly Aultman, Karen (Bob Wetterberg) Hill, Darin (Jill) Boese and Shelly (Gary) Losie; 13 grandchildren; his mother, Mildred Boese Nelson; brothers, Tyronne "Tiny" (Rhonda) and Donald "Duck"; and sisters, Roxanne (Roger) Stiles and Allison Boese.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Services: 7 p.m. Friday, Peterson Chapel, St. Michael-Albertville (Minn.) Funeral Home.
Visitation: 4 p.m. Friday until time of services.
