Theodore Hurlbert
BEMIDJI -- Theodore "Ted" Hurlbert, 72, Bemidji, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bemidji.
Theodore Hurlbert was born Oct. 24, 1927, the son of Harley and Mabel (Haudenshield) Hurlbert, in Cleveland. He moved with his family to Pittsburgh, where he attended school. They then moved to Newington, Va., in 1941, here he attended school. In 1944, they moved to Bemidji, where he attended school. He worked for Western Union in the 1940s, the Rite-way Cafe in the 1950s and had worked at the Occupational Development Center in Bemidji until May 2000.
He is survived by nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald.
Services: 2: 30 p.m. today, Bethel Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Frohn Eastside Cemetery, Frohn Township, Beltrami County, Minn. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Lutheran Church (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
Gordon Torfin
NORTHWOOD, N.D. -- Gordon Torfin, 72, Northwood, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Gordon Torfin was born July 11, 1928, the son of Fred and Mathea (Erickson) Torfin, in Kloten, N.D., where he attended school. He worked as a farm laborer for area farmers and moved with his parents to Aneta, N.D., in 1966. He moved to Northwood in 1994.
He is survived by brothers, Milton (Jo) and Dennis (Deanna), both of Boise, Idaho, and Pat (Bonnie), Yelm, Wash.; and sisters, Maxine (Murville) Kroke, Fargo, Mary Hillesland, Northwood, N.D., and Joyce (Weaver) Jordan, Silverdale, Wash.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Michael and Frederick; and half brother, Virgil.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Bilden Funeral Home, Northwood.
Visitation: Two hours before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Silent Hill Cemetery, Aneta.
Ordean Haugen
GILBY, N.D. -- Ordean W. Haugen, 92, formerly of Gilby, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, in Mandan (N.D.) Care Center.
Ordean W. Haugen was born Nov. 7, 1908, the son of Ole and Gunhilda (Staveteig) Haugen, in Gilby. He graduated from high school in Park River, N.D. He farmed in the Gilby area. He married
Maxine Jackson on July 6, 1933. She died Nov. 17, 1962. He married
Margaret Wimmer Niema on July 29, 1964, in Fargo. She died Feb. 17, 1983.
He is survived by a son, Ordean Jr. (Corrine), Mandan; a daughter, Kay Edwards, West Fargo; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughters, Darlene and Cheryl; a grandson; brothers, Sievert, Peter, Ingvald and Clifford; and sisters, Julia and Emma.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Honeyford, N.D.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 6: 45 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Honeyford.
Susan Ellingson
McHENRY, N.D. -- Susan Ellingson, 84, McHenry, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in Carrington (N.D.) Health Center.
Susan Bernice Ellingson was born Dec. 16, 1915, the daughter of Anton and Gina (Kaase) Falla, in Moses, N.D., where she attended school. She married
Lannes Ellingson on Nov. 27, 1935, in Binford, N.D. They lived and farmed in the McHenry area. Lannes Ellingson died Oct. 30, 1992.
She is survived by a sister, Janette Ragan, Renton, Wash.
She was preceded in death by six sisters; and three brothers.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, McHenry.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 8: 30 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.
Burial: Bethlehem Cemetery, McHenry.
Andrew Gourde
OAKWOOD, N.D. -- Andrew Gourde, 77, California, formerly of Oakwood, died Dec. 20, 1999, in California.
Andrew Gourde was born May 7, 1922, the son of Domicele and Irene (French) Gourde, in North Dakota, where he attended school. He moved to St. Louis, where he attended the Jesuits Seminary. He moved to California, where he helped the homeless and the Right to Life.
He is survived by a brother, Albert, Bountiful, Utah.
He was preceded in death by eight siblings.
Memorial services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oakwood (Henriksen-Kamrowski, Grafton, N.D.).
Art Johnson
PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Art Johnson, 75, Park River, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in St. Ansgars Health Center, Park River.
Art Johnson was born Oct. 22, 1924, the son of Ole and Hattie (Gustafson) Johnson, in Park River. He attended school near Adams, N.D. He worked for area farmers. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 27, 1943 to March 2, 1946. He married
Roseann Korynta on Sept. 12, 1953, in Grand Forks. They lived in Park River, where they owned and operated a gravel truck working on the missile sites. He also worked for Enoch Larson and Sons, E.W. Wieley and Transystems.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Randy (Roxann) and Roger, both of Park River; daughters, Barb (Jim) Ferguson, Park River and Kathy (Kevin) Ferguson, Grand Forks; four grandsons; a brother, Harlan (Donna), Blue Lake, Calif.; and sisters, Margaret Hajicek and Helen Earls, both of The Dells, Ore.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Gordon and Dewy; and sisters, Mariann Lick and Lavern McBain.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Park River.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 5: 15 p.m. prayer service, Henriksen-Overbye Funeral Home, Park River, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery.
Military rites: Paul Farup American Legion Post No. 147, Park River.
