John Havlis
STARKWEATHER, N.D. -- John "Johnnie" Havlis, 78, Hawley, Minn., formerly of Starkweather, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.
John Havlis was born March 6, 1922, the son of John and Victoria (Kaisersatt) Havlis, in Parshall, N.D., where he attended school. He married
Cleo Hemmingsen on Oct. 25, 1947, in Parshall. He farmed with his father near Parshall. In 1952, they moved to Starkweather, where he owned and operated Johnnie's Bar until retiring in 1991. They moved to Hawley in 1997.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Susan Liljestrand and Jane (Dale) VanHavermaet, both of Hawley; five grandchildren; a step-grandson; and sisters, Victoria Havlis, Yakima, Wash., and Louise (Dell) Thomas, Grace, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by a son, John; and sister, Sybil Allred.
Services: 10: 30 Saturday, Assumption Catholic Church, Starkweather.
Visitation: Noon to 9 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. vigil service, Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Assumption of Mary Catholic Cemetery.
Ann Bruce
BELCOURT, N.D. -- Ann M. Bruce, 85, Belcourt, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in Presentation Medical Center, Rolla, N.D.
Ann M. Pettie was born Feb. 15, 1915, the daughter of David and Mary (Peltier) Pettie, in Bottineau, N.D. She attended school in Marty, S.D. She married
Louis Bruce in Dunseith, N.D. They live in Belcourt. She lived in the Belcourt Retirement Center for the past 14 years. Louis Bruce died Feb. 4, 2000.
She is survived by sons, David, Roger and Gene, all of Belcourt, Robert, Hazen, N.D., and Rodney, Fargo; a daughter, Pauline, Aberdeen, S.D.; 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; a half brother, Emil Gooden, Dunseith; and half sisters, Doris Thorpe, Ogden, Utah, and Eva Gooden, Cando, N.D.
She was preceded in death by two infant sons; a brother, Edward; a sister, Dorothy Davis; and half brothers, Roy Gooden and Albert Gooden.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday, St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt.
Visitation: Begins at 6: 30 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. rosary and vigil service, and one hour before services all in the church.
Burial: St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, Belcourt (Keplin, Rolette, N.D.).
Steven Bruggeman
CROOKSTON -- Steven J. Bruggeman, 42, Moorhead, formerly of Crookston, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at home.
Steven J. Bruggeman was born July 1, 1958, the son of Ruby and Lloyde Bruggeman, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. He grew up in Brooks, Minn., and graduated from high school in Erskine, Minn., in 1976. He attended the University of Minnesota-Crookston. He worked for the Viking Bar and Northland Lodge, Crookston. In 1992 he moved to Fargo. He worked at the Flying J Restaurant as a cook. He moved to Moorhead in 1998. He worked as a bartender at the Fargo VFW and had worked for the American Legion, Moorhead, since 1994.
He is survived by his mother, Brooks; sisters, Margo (Carl) Thiede, Lancaster, Wis., Nancy (Rolfe) Ericson, Guthrie, Minn., and Becky (Kevin) Tranby, West Fargo, N.D.; and a sister-in-law, Mary Bruggeman, Thief River Falls.
He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Peggy; and a brother, Daniel.
Services: 9 a.m. Saturday, St. Francis Catholic Church, Moorhead.
Visitation: 6: 30 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.
Burial: 1: 30 p.m. Saturday, St. Joseph's Cemetery, Brooks (Boulger, Fargo).
Clara Fawcett
DEVILS LAKE -- Clara E. Fawcett, 87, Devils Lake, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Clara Edith Schrag was born July 29, 1913, the daughter of Jonathan and Anna (Senner) Schrag, in Starkweather, N.D., where she graduated from high school. She attended the North Dakota Agricultural College, Fargo. She married
Dr. John Fawcett on July 26, 1933, in Starkweather. They lived in Devils Lake. Dr. John Fawcett died Sept. 21, 1975. She was a charter member of the Devils Lake Community Concert.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol Fawcett, Devils Lake; a son, John "Bill" (Laurie), Milwaukee; and three grandsons.
Services: Will be held later (Gilbertson, Devils Lake).
Ellen Gisselquist
Ellen Gisselquist, 90, Everett, Wash., formerly of Grand Forks, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, in Bethany of the Northwest at Silver Lake, Everett.
Ellen Sylvia Kucera was born Aug. 16, 1910, the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Slonek) Kucera, in Falun Township, Roseau County, Minn. She attended school in Polk County, Minn. She married
Melvin Gisselquist on July 3, 1933, in Grand Forks. He died May 26, 1985. She moved to Washington in 1990.
She is survived by daughters, Eileen (Ernest) Nuzum, Fullerton, Calif., Meryl Gisselquist, Elk River, Minn., and Karen (Richard) Newstrand, Mukilteo, Wash.; four grandchildren; and a sister Angie (Harvey) Tripp, Grand Forks.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Agnes Verzalik and Lillian Larson; and three infant brothers.
Memorials are suggested to Bethany of the Northwest, Everett.
Mary Kraft
RUGBY, N.D. -- Mary Kraft, 89, Rugby, died Nov. 13, 2000, in Heart of America Medical Center, Rugby.
Mary Ann Heit was born Feb. 11, 1911, the daughter of Andrew and Magdalena (Schneider) Heit, in Tramping Lake, Sask. She moved with her family to Towner, N.D., where she attended school. She attended school in Webster, N.D., near Devils Lake, where the family had moved. She married
Fred Kraft on Nov. 24, 1930, in Ramsey County, N.D. They lived near Barton, N.D., and farmed in Pierce and Rolette counties. In 1954, they moved to a farm near Berwick, N.D., and to Rugby in 1961. She worked for the Ideal Cafe and the Hub Restaurant in Rugby. Fred Kraft died June 15, 1980.
She is survived by daughters, Josephine Lommen and Margaret Stone, both of Surrey, N.D.; sons, Frank (Elaine) Rugby, Edward (Alice), Gladstone, Mo., and John (Lois), Grand Forks; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank, in Oklahoma; and sisters, Betty Dannis and Josephine Nowak, both in Michigan.
She was preceded in death by a grandchild; a son-in-law, Bertram Lommen; brothers, Clarence, Lawrence, Albert and Ned; and a sister, Tillie Jones.
Services: Were held in Rugby.
Burial: Little Flower Catholic Church Cemetery, Rugby (Anderson, Rugby).
Bob Fillipi
Bob "Bobbie" Fillipi, 76, East Grand Forks, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Valley Memorial Home, Grand Forks.
Bob William Fillipi was born Jan. 5, 1924, the son of Henry Sr. and Mary (Piker) Fillipi, in Warren, Minn., where he attended school. He married
Ardith Cameron on June 6, 1942, in Hallock, Minn. They lived in Warren, where he worked for the Warren Silo Co., as builder and manager. He started Fillipi Truck Lines in 1950 and the Fillipi Construction Co., which was later known as Valley Builders Inc. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. They moved to East Grand Forks in 1989.
He is survived by his wife; children, Dennis (Julie), Faribault, Minn., Shirley (Delwood) Larson, Alvarado, Minn., Jerold (Debbie), Emerado, N.D., and Janice (John) Kuralle, Ray, Minn.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters, Rose (Eddie) Opsund, Thief River Falls, and Henrietta (Henry) Knutson, Gully, Minn.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Mayme Fillipi and Emily (Charles) Anderson; and brothers, Raymond, Henry Jr., Arthur and Ernest.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, Grace United Methodist Church, Warren.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Quanrud-DuBore, Warren, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Warren.
Military rites: Warren American Legion Post No. 27.
