Jerome Broderson
Jerome Broderson, 57, Jamestown, formerly of Grand Forks, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at home.
Jerome Broderson was born Feb. 9, 1943, the son of Erwin and Sally (Gronstad) Broderson, in International Falls, Minn. He moved with his family to Grand Forks, where he graduated from high school in 1961. He served in the U.S. Navy from July 11, 1961 to July 10, 1967. He married
Joyce Vold on April 9, 1965, in East Grand Forks. They lived in Grand Forks, where he worked at the Airport. In 1970 he attended FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, Okla. In 1971 he moved to Jamestown, where he worked as an air traffic controller until 1975. From 1975 to 1978 he operated Park Plaza Liquors. He later drove truck for companies in Jamestown. He attended Valley City State College and Jamestown College. He graduated from VCSC in 1993. He continued driving truck until going to work at Smokeys Tobacco Shop. He retired in 1998.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Betsy Broderson, Jamestown, and Heidi Broderson, Lafayette, Colo.; a granddaughter; his mother, Sally Sirek, Superior, Wis.; brothers, Stewart, Reynolds, N.D., Gerald, Superior, and Rodney, Fargo; and a sister, Jeannette Reeling, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother.
Services: 1 p.m. today, Haut Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Visitation: Before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.
Gladys Hagness
Gladys Hagness, 90, Minneapolis, formerly of Grand Forks, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000.
Gladys Hagness and her husband owned and operated the roller rinks and miniature golf course in Grand Forks.
She is survived by daughters, Marilyn (Jerome) Nehring, Woodbury, Minn., and Joan Johnson, Halliday, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; a grandson; 10 brothers and sisters.
Memorial services: Will be at a later date (Cremation Society of Minnesota, Edina, Minn.).
Mabel Maurer
BINFORD, N.D. -- Mabel G. Maurer, 92, Binford, died July 31, 2000, in Gritman Medical Center, Moscow, Idaho.
Mabel G. Hanstad was born Oct. 7, 1907, the daughter of John and Mathilda (Olson) Hanstad, in Griggs County, N.D. She graduated from high school in Binford. She attended Mayville (N.D.) State Teachers College and received her teachers certificate. She taught elementary school in Jessie, N.D. She married
John Maurer on Oct. 5, 1929, in Griggs County. They lived in Binford. She worked as a post office clerk from 1953 to 1974, when she retired. John Maurer died in December 1985. She had spent winters with her daughter in Moscow since 1980.
She is survived by daughters, Merlyn Willett, Moscow, Jessie Cull, Woodinville, Wash., and Nancy Stefanski, Lakewood, Colo.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Alma Fredrickson and two infant sisters.
Memorial Services: Later in Good Samaritan Village, Moscow, and 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Binford.
Burial: Binford Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Village, Moscow, Trinity Lutheran Church, Binford, or a charity of the donor's choice.
Duane Fisk
LANGDON, N.D. -- Duane Fisk, 68, Langdon, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, in MeritCare, Fargo.
Duane Lester Fisk was born Jan. 18, 1932, the son of Sidney and Pearl (McConn) Fisk, in Fargo. He grew up and attended school in Ayr, N.D. He served with the U.S. Airforce from 1950 to 1954. He married
Jean Carignan on Feb. 14, 1956, in Cavalier, N.D. He worked as a grain elevator manager in Glasston, Drayton and Grand Forks, N.D. In 1961 they moved to Wales, N.D., where he owned and operated the Wales Farmers Elevator. In 1980 he moved to Langdon.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Debra (Charles) Rodgers, Minneapolis; sons, Mark (Julie) and Jeff (Kim), both of Langdon; eight grandchildren; a brother, Harold (Dolly), Ayr; and a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Fisk, Minot.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dana and Raymond "Bud"; and a sister, Vernie.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Langdon.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon, with a 7 p.m. prayer services, in the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Langdon.
Ena Graveline Snydal
WALHALLA, N.D. -- Ena Graveline Snydal, 87, Walhalla, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Ena Eyrikson was born Aug. 11, 1913, the daughter of Eyrikur and Gudbjorg (Kristjansdottir) Eyrikson, in Svold, N.D., where she attended school. She moved to Walhalla in 1926, where she graduated from high school in 1933. She worked in area restaurants before opening her own cafe in Walhalla. She remained in the restaurant business until 1944 and worked at the Walhalla State Bank from 1952 to 1964. She married
Laurea Graveline in 1938, in Walhalla. He died in 1955. She married
S. E. (Steini) Snydal in 1964, in Hensel, N.D. He died in 1992.
She is survived by her children, Charles (Barb) Graveline, Naperville, Ill., Bill (Wanda) Graveline, Grand Forks, Bob (Jane) Graveline, Bismarck, and Ted (Caryn) Snydal, Hilton Head Island, S.C.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Magnus (Lucy) Eyrikson, Walhalla; and a sister, Emily Burt, in Hawaii.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren; brothers, Bert, Chris, Oscar and Otto; and sisters, Asta Asmundsdottir, Sella Wendt and Elsie Hyde.
Services: 2: 30 p.m. Friday, Walhalla Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.
Burial: St. Boniface Cemetery, Walhalla (Nelson, Walhalla).
Dennis Schmiess
DRAYTON, N.D. -- Dennis F. Schmiess, 60, Drayton, died of cancer Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at home.
Dennis Frederick Schmiess was born May 9, 1940, the son of Dave and Jennie (Lindseth) Schmiess, in Devils Lake. He attended school in Alsen, N.D. He married
Mary Jane Monson on June 7, 1960. He received his bachelor's degree at the Institution of Higher Education, Ellendale, N.D., and his master's degree in school administration at North Dakota State University in 1968. He worked as an educator and coach in Havana and Leonard, N.D., and as superintendent. He was also the superintendent of Oakes Public Schools from 1970 to 1975. He also worked in the areas of real estate, retail, hospitality, insurance and banking.
He is survived by his wife; children, Todd (Julie), Grand Forks, Kori (Bill) Markovich, Crookston, Barry (Deborah), Fargo, and Becki (Steve) Fowler, Drayton; a foster daughter, Fran Brummund, Boston; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-granddaughters; his mother, Devils Lake; and sisters, Pat (Bill) Janzen, Grand Forks, and Marge (Bob) Rohn, Meeker, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Drayton Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, Adamson-Austin Funeral Home, Drayton.
Edwin Lilley
ROLLA, N.D. -- Edwin W. Lilley, 64, Rolla, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Garrison (N.D.) Hospital.
Edwin W. Lilley was born Sept. 3, 1936, the son of Norman and Alice (Azure) Lilley, in Belcourt, N.D. He attended school in Belcourt and Wahpeton, N.D., where he received certification as an automotive mechanic. He married
Marcella Wallette in 1955 in Belcourt. He worked for Tool Tech, Minneapolis, for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Roads Department, Belcourt, and the North Dakota Highway Department, Bismarck.
He is survived by children, Susan Cahoon, Stanton, Edwin Jr. and Steve, both of Fargo, and Duane, Belcourt; stepchildren, Roxanne Cahoon, Hazen, N.D., Connie Cahoon, Stanton, Shannon Burcham, Winger, Debbie Burcham, Minneapolis, and Mike Burcham, Mandan, N.D.; 24 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and siblings, Clarence, David, James, Melvin, Ruth Slater, Barbara Billman, all of Belcourt, and Patty DeCoteau, Dunseith, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his wife; children, Mary and Edwin Azure; his parents; brothers, Joseph, Norman, and Robert; and sisters, Mary, Blanche, and Rose.
Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt, N.D.
Visitation: After 6: 30 p.m. Monday, with an 8 p.m. vigil service, all in the church.
Burial: Church cemetery
