Scilla Velure
Funeral services for Scilla Maria Irma Eleanore (Boelter) Velure, 89, Valley City, were held on Thursday, April 12, 2001 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. Reverend Paul Huso and Reverend Mark Ostgarden officiated. Mrs. Velure died on Monday, April 9, 2001 at Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City.
Scilla Maria Eleanore Boelter, daughter of Wilhelm and Carolinn (Hinrichs) Boelter, was born on January 26, 1912 in Griswold, ND. She was baptized May 10, 1912 at Griswold and confirmed May 28, 1926. She attended school in the Griswold area.
On September 9, 1933, she married
Arnold J. Velure in Valley City. They farmed near Hastings, ND until they retired in 1963. In 1969 they moved to Breckenridge, Minn. where they both worked as custodians for a church. They moved to Valley City in 1973 and lived at the Sky Line Villa. Arnold died December 5, 1979. Scilla entered the Sheyenne Care Center in November 1999. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City.
She is survived by three daughters, Janice (Roger) Hultman, Moorhead; Marjorie (James) Demaree, Montevideo, Minn.; and Dianne (Bertel) Pedersen, Kathryn; one son-in-law, Donald Kimball, Prescott, Wisc.; one brother, Paul (Marge) Boelter, Utica, Mich.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Gerald Gilbertson, Valley City. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold Velure; one daughter, Carol; one grandson, Mark; and several brothers and sisters.
Interment at Ringsaker Cemetery, rural Valley City.

Julian J. Landsem
Funeral services for Julian J. Landsem, 86, Moorhead, were held Friday, April 19, 2001, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead. He died Monday, April 16, 2001, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Julian J. Landsem, the son of Martin and Inga (Berg) Landsem, was born February 14, 1915, at rural Walcott, N.D., where he grew up and received his education. During WWII, he served his country in the U.S. Army, serving overseas in Europe.
While in the service, he was united in marriage to Marvel E. Buckle, March 14, 1942, at Moorhead. After his discharge, the family made their home in Moorhead, later living in Fargo and Dilworth, Minn.
Julian was employed by the Fargo branch of Reinhard Brothers Company. In 1964, he became part owner of the company and the name of the business was changed to Central Auto Supply. Julian retired in the early 1980’s. His wife died on March 4, 1998. In January of 1999, Julian became a resident of Moorhead Healthcare Center.
He is survived by a son, Gary (Karen) Landsem, Dilworth, Minn.; two daughters, Cheryl (Jerry) Amundson, Apple Valley, Minn., and Linda (Jack) Hendrickson, Fargo; two brothers, Orvin J. Landsem, Lisbon, and Herman Landsem, Bakersfield, Calif.; a sister, Gloria Akvik, Walcott, N.D.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marvel, his parents, a brother, Morris, and three sisters, infant Mary, Marion Hovden and Harriet Dowell.
Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead.

Bernice Kile
Bernice Kile, 89, Lisbon, died at the Lisbon Medical Center on Monday, April 16, 2001. No service is planned.
Bernice Olga Jodsaas, daughter of Oscar and Bertha (Jensen) Jodsaas, was born May 30, 1911, near Fort Ransom, where she grew up.
In 1935, Bernice was married
to Fred Kile. They made their home on a farm in Verona. They later lived in Moorhead, where they owned and operated the Bluebird Cafe. They also lived in Breckenridge, Minn. Fred died in 1968. Bernice continued to live in Moorhead until she moved to Lisbon.
She is survived by a son, Dennis, Fargo; a daughter, Jean Ulschmid, Maple Grove, Minn.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Marlys Gillespie
Funeral services for Marlys Gillespie, 40, rural Park River, were held Saturday, April 7, 2001, at the Tollefson Funeral Home, Park River. She died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at her home near Park River.
Marlys Thompson was born August 8, 1960, in Lisbon. She attended schools in North Dakota and Minnesota. She married
Larry Gillespie in October of 2000. She was employed at the Park River Potato Sales.
She is survived by her husband Larry, Park River; two daughters, Jessica (Jeff) Rutledge, Fargo, and Catherine Askelson, Fargo; a son, Jim Askelson, Hitterdal, Minn.; two step-children, Derek Gillespie, Park River, and Jame Gillespie, Roseau, Minn.; her father, James (Doris) Thompson, Wheatland, N.D.; her mother, Eunice (LeRoy) Nelson, Southhill, Va.; four brothers, Richard, Fargo, Donald, Southhill, Va., Jeff, Valley City, and Harold, Hunter, N.D.; two sisters, Carol Phiefer, Hillsboro, N.D., and Charolette Linden, Hillsboro, N.D.; three step-brothers, Kelly Thompson, Fargo, Kenny Nelson, California, and Chris Nelson, Anderson, S.C.; three step-sisters, Doreen Thompson, Wheatland, N.D., Dawn Nelson, North Carolina, and Jennifer Nelson, Tennessee; and two grandchildren.

Mary Heuer
Funeral services for Mary Heuer, 78, Enderlin, formerly Sheldon, were held Tuesday, April 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin, with Rev. Leon Zavadil officiating. Mrs. Heuer died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Mary Cornelius was born July 14, 1922, in Minneapolis, to William and Juanita (Williams) Cornelius.
On October 8, 1940, she married
Leon F. Heuer in Minneapolis. They farmed near Sheldon. She attended Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin.
She is survived by a son, William (Carol), Augusta, Ga.; a daughter, Linda (Lloyd) Young, Los Alamos, N.M.; three brothers, Bud (Jan), Lake City, Minn., Dick (Joan), Bloomington, Minn., Charles (Laurie), Farmington, Minn.; two sisters, Connie Bing, Edina, Minn., Joanie Petersen of Plymouth, Minn.; and four grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon.
Music was provided by organist Joan Schlecht and soloist Don Stansbery.
Interment at Enderlin Cemetery.

Stephen Russell Traynor
Funeral services for Stephen Russell Traynor, 79, Enderlin, were held Saturday, April 21, 2001, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Enderlin, with Father James McKinney officiating. Mr. Traynor died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in his home in Enderlin.
Stephen Russell Traynor was born January 1, 1922 in Stephen, Minn., the son of Michael and Edna (Black) Traynor. He grew up in the area and attended school in Stephen. He entered the U.S. Army in 1945 and served in Europe at the end of WWII, staying on for several years as a member of the U.S. Army Constabulary in Germany. Following his discharge in 1947, Stephen began working for the Soo Line Railroad near Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
On May 27, 1950, he married
Lorena L. Kindermann in Eau Claire. They lived for 15 years in the Ashland, Wisconsin area, moving to Enderlin, N.D., in 1964, when Stephen became Bridge and Building Supervisor for the Soo Line. He worked in various positions with the Soo Line until his retirement in 1984. He was a life member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and had served as commander of Enderlin’s Schwandt-Goodman Post. A longtime board member of Fort Seward, Inc., Stephen participated in the organization’s annual trail rides for more than 20 years.
He is survived by a son, Terrance (Debbie), Bismarck; a daughter, Patricia (Charles) Baysinger, Anchorage, Alaska; three sisters, Mary Isabel Hanson, East Grand Forks, Minn., Jane Westenberg, Arizona, and Ruth Flynn, Arizona; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lorena, their infant son Michael, his brother Morton, and his sisters Loretta Huset and Genevieve Nelson-Multroni.
Pallbearers were Mike Noone, Jeremy Noone, Timothy Traynor, Casey Traynor, Mike Martin, and Sherman Syverson.
Lynette Schmitz was soloist.
Interment at Enderlin Cemetery.

Beverly Mae Hanson
Funeral services for Beverly Mae Hanson, 67, Lidgerwood, were held Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, rural Englevale, with Rev. David Carlson and Rev. John Peterson officiating. She died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at the MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
Beverly Mae Dick was born on May 28, 1933 in Lisbon, daughter of Lawrence and Ruby (Hallquist) Dick, Sr. She grew up on the farm in rural Englevale and attended country grade school, and then attended and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1951. She attended Valley City State Teachers College in Valley City, graduating with a teaching certificate, and later received her Bachelor of Science in Education. She taught for two years in country schools in the rural Lisbon area.
On May 8, 1955, Beverly was united in marriage to Clifford Hanson at Englevale. Following their marriage she taught in numerous schools in North Dakota, including Marian, Mandan, Courtney, Fort Ransom, Fingal, Wheatland. In the summer of 1975, they moved to Lidgerwood, where she taught in the Lidgerwood Public School until her retirement in 1991. She had taught school for 38 years. In the fall of 2000 during Education Week, the Lidgerwood American Legion Auxiliary presented Beverly with the Teacher of the Year Award. Mr. Hanson died on December 27, 1988. Beverly was a member of Bergen Lutheran Church.
She is survived by two sons, Sargent First Class James (Cari) Hanson, San Angelo, Tex., and Jason Hanson, Wyndmere; a daughter, Susan Frank; four brothers, Harold (Dorothy) Dick, James (Millie) Dick, Gerald (Shelby) Dick, and Lawrence (Lori) Dick, Jr., all of Englevale; a sister, Mary Jo Urseth, Ridgecrest, Calif.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Cliff, a son, Roger, and an infant sister, Jeanne.
Pallbearers were Benjamin Dick, Gaylen Dick, Jason Dick, John Heacox, Jamie Walls and Jeremy Walls. Honorary pallbearers were “Fellow teachers, and all her many students she taught.”
Interment at the Dick Cemetery, rural Englevale.

Willis Brush
Funeral services for Willis Bruch, 76, Valley City, were held Friday, April 20, 2001, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City, with Rev. Ellen Arthur officiating. Mr. Brush died Monday, April 16, 2001, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Willis L. Brush was born April 3, 1925, in Lisbon, the son of Rollo and Selma (Engel) Brush. He moved with his family to Fargo where he attended grade school and then moved with his family to Valley City where he attended Valley City High School. Willis served with the United States Navy during World War II from 1943 until 1946. After his discharge Willis came back to Valley City.
He married
Doris Froemke on May 20, 1947, in Valley City. The couple made their home here where Willis worked for Montana Dakota Utilities. In 1970 they moved to Minneapolis where Willis and Doris managed apartment houses. They retired and moved to Planet City, Florida, in 1987. They moved back to Valley City in 1991.
Willis was a member of the Valley City Volunteer Fire Department for over twenty years and was one of the last fire fighters who fought the S&L Department Store Fire. In 1997 he received a plaque from the Valley City Fire Department for Honorary Fireman for dedication to the Fire Department. He was also very active with the Valley City Eagles and was State Eagles President in 1956. Willis and Doris received the Mr. and Mrs. Eagle award in 1993. Willis was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2764. He also served the Barnes County Senior Citizens where he volunteered his time driving and delivering meals on wheels for a number of years.
He is survived by his wife Doris, Valley City; a daughter, Cindy (Matthew) Voulgarakis, Fargo; a brother, James (Colleen) Brush, West Richland, Wash.; a sister, Audrey (Raymond) Brooks, Winona, Minn.; a brother-in-law, Troy Daniels, St. Paul, Minn.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Ivy Daniels and Jeanne Dykema.
Interment at Memory Gardens near Valley City.
