Katherine Praska
OSNABROCK, N.D. -- Katherine A. Praska, 90, Osnabrock, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Good Samaritan Center, Osnabrock, where she had lived since 1995.
Katherine A. Houser was born April 20, 1910, the daughter of Frank and Stella (Svoboda) Houser, in Pisek, N.D., where she attended school. She married
A. George Praska on Nov. 12, 1935, in Pisek. They lived in Park River until 1950, when they moved to Holt, Minn., to farm. They sold the farm in 1967. A. George Praska preceded her in death. She then worked as a live-in day care provider in the Thief River Falls area until retiring in the late 1970s.
She is survived by a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Robert Hunter, Milton, N.D.
She was preceded in death by a son, David; a daughter, Kathleen Hunter; three brothers; and six sisters.
Services: 2 p.m. today, Tol-lefson Funeral Home, Edin-nburg.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Holt City Cemetery.
Thorman Johnson
LEEDS, N.D. -- Thorman "Big Mike" Johnson, 77, Leeds, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, in SCCI Hospital, Mandan, N.D.
Thorman Merill Johnson was born Oct. 9, 1923, the son of Ingeman and Rena (Hauger) Johnson, in Osakis, Minn. He moved to Hansboro, N.D., in 1937. He later moved to Leeds and worked for area farmers. He also worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps, Dunseith, N.D.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by several brothers.
Services: 3 p.m. today, Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Leeds Lutheran Cemetery.
Martha Helgeland
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Martha E. Helgeland, 95, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Broen Memorial Home, Fergus Falls, Minn., where she had lived since 1997.
Martha E. Newton was born Dec. 2, 1904, the daughter of Carl and Mathilda (Enerson) Newton. She graduated from high school in McIntosh, Minn. She attended Normal Training School in Duluth and McIntosh. She taught school in Gonvick, McIntosh and Thief River Falls. She worked summers as a cook for a threshing crew in North Dakota. She married
O. Edwin Helgeland on June 12, 1937, in McIntosh. They lived near Thief River Falls. O. Edwin Helgeland died in 1986.
She is survived by a daughter, Joyce (J. Arthur) Johnson, Fergus Falls; a son, Orrin (Shirley), Burwell, Neb.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clifford Newton, Aitkin, Minn.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Teodure, Edward and Norman.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Light and Life Auditorium in Broen Memorial Home.
Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. today, Glende-Nelson & Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls, and one hour before services in the home.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Robert Manske
Robert Manske, 60, Grand Forks, died of cancer Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at home.
Robert Allen Manske was born July 20, 1940, the son of Willert and Esther (Bohn) Manske, in Breckenridge, Minn. He graduated from high school in Wahpeton, N.D., and attended Wahpeton State School of Science. He worked for Northern States Power Co. for 37 years before retiring in 1995. He married
Catherine Mickelson on Feb. 10, 1962.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Jeffrey (Lois) and John, both of Grand Forks, and Joel (Sheryl), rural Grand Forks; a daughter, Jill (Brian) Leingang, Johnson City, Tenn.; four grandchildren; his mother; and a brother, Kenneth, Yuma, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Darrell.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Saturday, Calvary Lutheran Church.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Amundson Funeral Home.
Burial: Evanger Cemetery.
Donna Chapman
PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Donna Chapman, 74, San Clemente, Calif., formerly of Park River, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at home.
Donna Lou Skjerven was born March 21, 1926, the daughter of William and Gudrun "Gunna" (Thorsteinson) Skjerven, in Park River, where she attended school. She graduated from UND in 1948. She married
Blair Chapman on July 15, 1948, in Park River. In 1957, they moved to Seattle, where she taught at Shoreline District School. In 1971, they moved to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., where she taught at Lake Havasu City High School until retiring in 1998. Blair Chapman died in 1998. She moved to San Clemente.
She is survived by daughters, Diane (Mark) Derengowski, Aliso Viejo, Calif., and Susan (Keith) Howington, Dana Point, Calif.; a son, James, San Clemente; a daughter-in-law, Julie Pash Chapman, Laguna Niguel, Calif.; three grandchildren; a brother, Richard; and a sister, Leatrice McGuigan.
She was preceded in death by sons, William and Robert; and a brother, William.
Services: Were held in San Clemente.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River.
Mabel Lies
NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. -- Mabel E. Lies, 91, New Rockford, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Mabel Elaine Frazer was born Aug. 6, 1909, the daughter of William and Caroline (Parker) Frazer, in Eddy County, N.D. She attended school in New Rockford and worked on the family farm. She married
Dutch Vogel in 1926 in New Rockford. She married
Martin Tonn in 1936 in New Rockford. She worked at the Silver Crest Bakery, Joe's Fairway and Beardsley Drug, all of New Rockford. Martin Tonn died Nov. 8, 1961. She worked at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd as a cook. She married
Harold Lies in 1969. He died July 18, 1987.
She is survived by sons, George (JoAnn) Vogel, Vancouver, Wash., Don (Verna) Vogel, Marysville, Wash., Charles (Karen) Tonn, Winthrop, Wash., and Roger (Janet) Tonn, Ridgefield, Wash.; daughters, Marlene (Tom) Spreng, Vancouver, Beverly Simonson, Salem, Ore., Delores (Bob Jr.) Haley, New Rockford, and Ardis Drader, Devils Lake; 27 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Lloyd, Seattle; and sisters, Leona Poppa, Battle Creek, Mich., and Ruth Ross, Couer d'Alene, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Bill; and sisters, Etta, Vera and Leora.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, New Rockford.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.
Burial: Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford.
