John (Jack) Aberle
Funeral services for John Aberle, 78, Lisbon, were held on Monday, November 19, 2001 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Lisbon. Father C.F. Wilhelm officiated. Mr. Aberle died Thursday, November 15, 2001 at the North Dakota Veterans Home, Lisbon.
John (Jack) Aberle, son of George and Rose (Schnell) Aberle, was born on April 26, 1923 in Zeeland, N.D. He attended schools in Zeeland, Aberdeen, Forbes and Ellendale, graduating from Ellendale High School. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943. He was assigned to Camp Gruber, Okla. He drove Heavy Truck No. 931, transporting personnel and equipment. He served in the European Campaign with the branch of the Army that liberated concentration camp, Dachau, which was the first concentration camp in Germany.
On October 24, 1944, he married Leota Thomason in Muskogee, Okla. He returned home from the service in 1946 and Jack returned to work for the North American Creamery Co. in Ellendale. He later bought a bar in Forbes, N.D. where they lived for 10 years before moving to Lisbon. He worked in construction for seven years, then moved to Denver, starting his own construction company. They moved back to Lisbon and started a construction company, building many homes in Lisbon.
He is survived by his wife, Leota Aberle, Lisbon; six sons, Michael (Susan) Aberle, Wonder Lake, Ill., Joseph (Diane) Aberle, Gackle, Timothy (Cynthia) Aberle, Fountain Hills, Ariz., Thomas (LaTisha) Aberle, Slaton, Tex., Jonathan Aberle and Jeffrey (Carmen) Aberle, Lisbon; five daughters, Leota (John) Piccone, Shingle Springs, Calif., Mary Carver, Star, Idaho, Rita (Claude) Maudal, Lisbon, Cynthia (Ronald) Vogel, Warner Robins, Ga., and Julie (Jerry) Sullivan, Eagle, Idaho; three brothers, Harold Aberle, Denver, Raymond (Emily) Aberle, Gainesville, Fla., Charles Aberle, Denver; two sisters, Loretta Sitter, Ada, Okla. and Shirley (Bill) Phillips, Green Valley, Ariz.; 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Matt Huffman, Rod Volk, Darwin Strander, Al King, Leonard Freeberg and Terry Thomason.
Music was provided by organist Gary Barta and soloist Allen Remily.
Interment at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Lisbon.

Joseph E. McGrath
Funeral services for Joseph McGrath, 80, Sheldon, were held on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sheldon. Father James McKinney officiated. Mr. McGrath died on Saturday, November 17, 2001 at the VA Hospital in Fargo.
Joseph E. McGrath, son of James and Catherine (Shea) McGrath, was born on December 22, 1920 in rural Sheldon. He attended rural Sheldon School. He was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. He served in Normandy, Southern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Battle of the Bulge. He received an American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit badge, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
On November 11, 1952, he married Ellen E. Finley in Webster, S.D. They lived in Sheldon where Joe owned his own truck for hauling gravel. He also had worked for Melroe Mfg. in Gwinner. He was a member of the Sheldon American Legion and the Enderlin V.F.W.
He is survived by one sister, Catherine (Robert) Walter, Huntington Beach, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen E. McGrath, who died May 30, 2001; four brothers, Thomas, James, Martin and Jack McGrath.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Dennis Archbold, Steve McGrath, Byron Stoffel, Matt McGrath, Gary Fraedrich and Tom Archbold.
Music was provided by organist Carole Bjugstad and soloist Don Stansbery.
Interment at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Sheldon.

James M. Broste
Funeral services for James M. Broste, 84, Lisbon, were held on Saturday, November 17, 2001 at the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon. Reverend David Isaacson officiated. Mr. Broste died Wednesday, November 14, 2001 in Lisbon.
James M. Broste, son of Ingvold and Sophie (Johnson) Broste, was born on June 10, 1917 in Hanska, Minn.. He attended rural school in Hamar, N.D. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1949. Jim worked as a farm laborer in North Dakota and Minnesota. He became a resident of the N.D. Veterans Home in 1992.
He is survived by one sister, Ila Halvorson, Tolna, N.D. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ivan and Gordon Broste; and two sisters, Bernice and Doris Broste.
Music was provided by organist Borge Bohlken and soloist Jan Hansen.
Interment at Warwick Cemetery, rural Warwick, N.D.

Byron Lubbers
Funeral services for Byron Lubbers, 68 Jamestown, were held on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown. Reverend Dennis Ellingsen officiated. Mr. Lubbers died Sunday, November 18, 2001 at his home in Jamestown.
Byron Lubbers, son of George and Beatrice (Hoberg) Lubbers, was born May 31, 1933 in Burnstad, N.D. He attended grade school in Burnstad and graduated from Napoleon High School. After high school, he began farming with his father.
On February 14, 1955, he married Monica Mitzel in Napoleon, N.D. They spent the first years of their married life on the family farm until 1965. During that time period, Byron was a 4-H leader and an active member of the Logan County Livestock and Grain Association. In April 1965, he went to work for USDA-ASCS as an office manager trainee. In the spring of 1966 he accepted the position of office manager of Pembina County, Cavalier, N.D. He held that position until October 1982, at which time he transferred to Stutsman County, Jamestown, as office manager. He held this position until his retirement in November 1996. While in Cavalier, he was active in Jaycee, served the school board, city zoning commission and booster club. He was very active in the ASCS employee’s association, serving as state president on two different occasions and also served as secretary and treasurer. On the national level, he was elected as the NW Area Director and was later appointed as the National Legislative Chairperson and also served on many committees and task forces. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown.
He is survived by his wife, Monica Lubbers, Jamestown; his father, George Lubbers, Napoleon; three sons, Perry (Dawn) Lubbers, Gwinner, David (Carolyn) Lubbers, Centennial, Colo., and Paul Lubbers, Grand Forks; two daughters, Carla (Kurt) Kemnitz, Cavalier, and Nancy (Tim) Ost, Valley City; one sister, Carmen Burgad, Napoleon; one brother, Dale Lubbers, Vancouver, Wash.; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Lubbers and two grandchildren.
Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.

Lula Gertie Williamson
Funeral services for Lula Gertie Williamson, 88, Lisbon (formerly Milnor), were held on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at Milnor Lutheran Church. Reverend Arthur Larson officiated. Mrs. Williamson died on Friday, November 16, 2001 at Parkside Lutheran Home, Lisbon.
Lula Gertie Dinger, daughter of Jess and Gertie (Heyen) Dinger, was born on January 3, 1913 in Mossell, N.D., southeast of Wyndmere, where she grew up and attended school.
On May 25, 1935, she married Walter Leonard Williamson in Wyndmere. They lived in Wyndmere until 1942 before moving to the Milnor area and farming. In 1974, Lula and Walter retired and moved into Milnor. In 1992, they moved to Lisbon. The couple wintered in Apache Junction, Ariz. Walter died on March 19, 1995. Lula continued to live in Lisbon and entered Parkside Lutheran Home in 1998.
She is survived by four sons, Lyle (Rose) Williamson, Cumberland, Wis., Gary (Eldora) Williamson, Chaska, Minn., Curtis (Ardith) Williamson, Dix, Neb., and Clyde WIlliamson, Valley City; one daughter, Ruby (Robert) McRitchie, Sheldon; 21 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Williamson; one son, Howard Williamson; one granddaughter; three brothers, Roy, Walter and Floyd Dinger; four sisters, Mabel Herman, Esther Fink, Florence Kressin and Doris Solberg.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Bryan Williamson, Jesse Williamson, Robert McRitchie, Todd McRitchie, Adam Williamson, Robert Williamson, Scott Williamson, Kevin Williamson, Terry Williamson, Michael Williamson, Terry A. Williamson and Ethan Savenko. Honorary pallbearers were Hylee Williamson, Julie Scanlan, Jackie Campbell, Debbie Chappel, Kristi Hornung, Becky Halligan, Lori Williamson, Beth Williamson and Tracie Ellen Creamer.
Music was provided by organist Carol Ydstie and soloist Pat Olson.
Interment at Milnor Lutheran Cemetery

Alton Halmrast
Funeral services for Alton Halmrast, 74, Milnor, were held on Saturday, December 8, 2001 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, DeLamere. Reverend Arthur Larson officiated. Mr. Halmrast died Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at the Oakes Community Hospital, Oakes.
Alton Halmrast, son of Andrew and Otelia (Trarund) Halmrast was born on March 2, 1927 on the family farm near DeLamere, where he grew up and attended rural school. He continued to live on the family farm with his brother George until 1991, when they moved into Milnor.
He is survived by one sister, Olga (Arnold) Buelow, Watertown, S.D.; one, sister-in-law, Celia Halmrast, Wahpeton, ; seven nephews and nieces and twelve great-nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, George, Leif and Edwin and one sister, Minnie Erickson..
Pallbearers for the funeral were David Siudzinski, Allen Buelow, E. Clair Halvorson, Dale Halmrast, Allison Halmrast and Tom Van Raden.
Music was provided by organist Roxann Siudzinski and soloists Sarah Siudzinski and Carol Ydstie.
Interment at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, DeLamere.

Floyd Steele, Jr.
Funeral services for Floyd Steele, Jr., 58, Jamestown, were held on Friday, December 7, 2001 at the Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown. Pastor Bryce Tahran officiated. Mr. Steele died Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at the Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.
Floyd Steele, son of Floyd J. Steele and Merle (Thompson) Steele, was born on June 9, 1943 at Edmonds, N.D. He received his elementary education in Pingree, N.D. where he grew to manhood in the vicinity.
On December 3, 1965, he married Dianna Jund, in Jamestown. They made their home in Jamestown where he worked for Mellands, Inc. In 1967 they moved to California where he worked for a Refrigeration Co. for four years. They then moved to Bowdle, S.D. where he worked for Haberers Refrigeration for eight years before moving back to Jamestown where he was employed with the Stutsman County Road Dept. for 22 years until his death. He was a member of the North American Hunting Club, North American Fishing Club, National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his wife Dianna Steele, Jamestown, two daughters Doreen (Auddie) Quast, Lisbon and Destiny (Randy Lindseth, Fargo; four grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; four brothers, Harvey (Teresa) Steele, Mervin (Cleo) Steele, Merline (Sharon) Steele, Darrel (Nancy Steele, all Jamestown; and one sister, Marlene Goodroad, Jamestown. He was preceded in death by in parents.
Haut Funeral Homes in Jamestown, was in charge of arrangements.

Francis W. Hammes
Funeral services for Francis W. Hammes, 68, Sykeston, were held on Friday, December 7, 2001 at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Sykeston, N.D. Reverend Mathew Pamplaniyil officiated. Mr. Hammes died December 1, 2001, at his home in Sykeston.
Francis W. Hammes, son of Nicholas and Lucille (Schaack) Hammes was born on November 22, 1933 at Sykeston. He went to St. Elizabeth grade school and graduated from Sykeston High School in 1952. Francis farmed on the family farm southwest of Sykeston.
He is survived by six brothers, Louis (Bernice) Hammes, Minnetonka, Minn., Raymond (Eva) Hammes, Minneapolis, Leo Hammes, Lisbon, William (Friedel) Hammes, Coon Rapids, Don Hammes and John Hammes, both Fountain Valley, Calif.; four sisters, Lucille Stroud, Long Beach, Calif., Virginia (William) Lewis, Loraine (James) Buck, and Delores Cochran, all of Huntington Beach, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant sister, and one brother, Eugene.
Pallbearers for the funeral were his family and friends.
Music was provided by the Celebration Singers.
Interment at St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery, Sykeston.
