Jo D. Lange, 86
Jo D. Lange, 86, Colorado City, Colo., formerly of Fairmount, N.D., died May 10, 2009, in Pueblo, Colo.
A memorial service is pending.
Jo D. Smitherman was born in Bibb County, Ala., on April 14, 1923. Jo enjoyed traveling the world as an Air Force wife. She later settled in Denver, where she lived until recently. Jo was a loving mother and grandmother, a loyal friend to many, and an expert bridge player.
She is survived by: children, Bill (Judy) Lange of Dundee, Minn., and Naomi (Yonge) Simmons of Colorado City; grandchildren, Christian Lange, Jenny Carlin, Lange Simmons, Joshua Simmons; and great-grandchildren, Jacob and Natalie Carlin.
Arrangements are being handled by Horan & McConaty of Denver.
Victor R. Myhre, 85
Victor R. Myhre, 85, Abercrombie, N.D., died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the Minnesota Veterans Home, Fergus Falls, Minn.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 21, at Bethany Free Lutheran Church, rural Abercrombie, with the Rev. Dr. Francis Monseth officiating.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Willow Creek Chapel (920 3rd Ave. N.) Wahpeton and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
Burial will be at Bethany Free Lutheran Cemetery, rural Abercrombie.
Victor was born Sept. 24, 1923, at Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Selmer and Alma (Hermo) Myhre. He moved to rural Abercrombie with his family in 1938. He served in the Army Air Corps from December of 1942 to December of 1945. He was united in marriage to Carol Pauline Foss on Dec. 30, 1952, at Richland Lutheran Church, rural Walcott, N.D. The couple lived and farmed in rural Abercrombie where they raised their six children. Victor retired from farming in 1980, he then worked for Myron Rostad and Donald Gunness for a time. Pauline died Nov. 9, 1995. Victor continued to live at his farm until 2000, when he moved into Wahpeton, and in 2003 he entered Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, Minn.
Victor was a long time and active member of Bethany Free Lutheran Church, where he was a former Deacon and Trustee. He also was a member of Gideon’s International and Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International.
Victor is survived by: his four sons and two daughters, Jonathan (Hope) Myhre, Abercrombie, children Tom, Tony and Mark; Craig (Ila) Myhre, Abercrombie, children Christopher (Amy) Clark and Kari (Shane) Tosse; Rusty Spur, rural Abercrombie; Robert Myhre, Rio Rancho, N.M.; Thea (Vern) Dunnick, Canton, S.D., and daughter Corrie; Jane (Tim) Wieser, rural Wahpeton, daughters, Jasmine and Victoria; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth (Beverly) Myhre, Crete, Ill., and David (Ruth) Myhre, Half Moon Bay, Calif.; his sister, Judith (Percy) Strand, Wahpeton; his sisters-in-law, Lois Myhre, Abercrombie, Florence Myhre, Pelican Rapids, Minn., Verna Leedahl, Fargo, N.D., Arlene Nelson, Wolverton, Minn.; several nieces and nephews and a special foster son, Wayne Gorder, Abercrombie.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; and two brothers, Owen Myhre and Maurice Myhre.
Arrangements are with the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, N.D.
Lois Kratcha, 78
Lois Kratcha, 78, Hankinson, N.D., died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckenridge, Minn.
Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 13 at St. Philip's Catholic Church, Hankinson.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 12 with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Hankinson.
Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson, is in charge of the arrangements.
Erma Syverson, 90
Erma Syverson, 90, Wahpeton, N.D., formerly Dwight, N.D., died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, N.D.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20 at Faith Lutheran Church, Dwight, with the Rev. Gordon Lee officiating.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Willow Creek Chapel (920 3rd Ave. N.) Wahpeton. There will also be visitation one hour before the service at the church on Friday.
Burial will be in the spring at Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Dwight.
Erma was born Oct. 19, 1918, at Dwight, the daughter of Carl and Mabel (Erickson) Anderson. Erma attended school in Dwight, graduating from Wahpeton High School. She moved to Tacoma, Wash., during WWII for employment and was united in marriage to Ryland Syverson on July 11, 1942, in Tacoma. She returned to Dwight after Ryland was shipped overseas. After Ryland returned from the war, the couple lived in Dwight until 1949, when they moved to Ellendale, N.D., where Ryland received his teaching degree in Industrial Arts. They lived in Bottineau, N.D., before moving to Wahpeton in 1954 and back to Dwight in 1959. Ryland died Dec. 9, 1963. Erma was employed as head cook at Dwight School from 1964-1989. She always had enough prepared for the many students who came back for seconds. After the Dwight School was closed she worked on the kitchen staff at Wahpeton middle School unit 1994. In 1995 she started employment as a housekeeper at the Wahpeton Super 8 Motel where she was referred to as “True Grit” for her hard work ethics. She continued at the Super 8 until her retirement in July 2001. In 2005 she moved into the Northland Apartments in Wahpeton, where she has resided since.
Erma was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where she was active with the church ladies group. She was an avid crossword and jigsaw puzzle player and bowled into her 80s. She was a former officer and member of Richland County Historical Society and was known to tailgate at University of North Dakota football games with her son and his friends.
Erma is survived by: for four children, Ryland (Lavetta) Syverson, Grand Forks, N.D., Marilyn (Robert) Miller, Wahpeton, Lynn (Jean) Syverson, Gaithersburg, Md., Sheri (Martin) Garcia, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 11 grandchildren, Chad Syverson, Kiersten Panzer, Jenny Reinke, Sean Syverson, Bryon Syverson, Erica Syverson, Amy Syverson, Elise Garcia, Betsy Garcia, Tony Garcia, Teresa Garcia; three step-grandchildren, Jessica Taffe, Brandy Bjorem and Robert Miller; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren; and her brother Earl Anderson, Wilsonville, Ore.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Carl and Mabel; and her husband Ryland.
Orris Morken, 88
Orris Morken, 88, Fargo, N.D. formerly of rural Walcott, N.D., died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009 at Bethany Living Center in Fargo.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. at Richland Lutheran Church, rural Walcott, with Rev. Roger Reinhart officiating.
Visitation will be Tuesday, from 5-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, N.D. and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
Burial will be at Richland Lutheran Cemetery, rural Walcott.
Orris was born Aug. 21, 1920 in Eagle Township, rural Walcott, the son of Christ H. and Olga (Lokken) Morken. Orris was baptized and confirmed at Richland Lutheran Church, rural Walcott. He attended school at Eagle No. 4.
Orris farmed all of his life, first with his father and brother and then with his son, David.
Orris married
Corrine Schoeneck on Jan. 19, 1957 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. The couple lived on their farm in rural Walcott. Corrine passed away Sept. 8, 1999 and Orris moved into the Bethany Homes, Fargo in 2005, after 85 years of residing at his farm.
Orris was a life long member of Richland Lutheran Church and enjoyed working with his hands either rebuilding old cars and machinery or woodworking. Orris and Corrine enjoyed auction sales and collected glassware, especially Rosemeade pheasants and Ruby Glass.
Orris is survived by: his son David, and daughter-in-law, Roxanne, granddaughters Janet and Laura Morken, three nephews and three nieces and many great nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christ and Olga, his wife, Corrine, his grandson James, brother Jim and sister Clarice Voss.
Marjean Isabelle Miller, 82
Marjean Isabelle Miller, 82, of Fargo, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009 at Bethany Homes, Fargo, N.D.
Funeral service is Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Fargo. Visitation is Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. at Hanson Runsvold Funeral home, Fargo, followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
Marjean Isabelle (Hudson) Miller was born Nov. 9, 1926 on the farm in Nansen Township No. 2, Richland County. She was the oldest of six children born to Fred D. and Marie (Score) Hudson. She was baptized on March 16, 1927 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Colfax, N.D. and was confirmed on May 12, 1940.
In 1940, she graduated from grade school in Nansen Township School No. 2 and then went to Colfax High School for three years. Marjean graduated from Wahpeton High School in May 1944. While growing up she was active in the 4-H club. She went on to attend North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton for Business College and transferred to Interstate Business college of Fargo, N.D.
Marjean worked for DeLendrecies in Fargo as a bookkeeper, Northwest Telephone Company as a switchboard operator and Fargo Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide. She also worked for Gamma Phi Sorority House and McDonald’s part time.
Marjean met LeRoy R. Miller and was married
Sept. 23, 1950 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Fargo. God blessed their marriage with six children.
Marjean was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church being involved with her circle and Bible study groups. She maintained being active with the church services at Bethany Homes during the last nine months of her life, even though her health was failing. Family, friends and church were always an important part of Marjean’s life. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Fargo branch.
Marjean is survived by: five children, Larry, Bloomington, Minn., Robert, Fargo, Richard (Sandy) Lauderdale, Minn., Linda (Jim) Lucke, Wolverton, Minn. and Steven (Karla), West Fargo, N.D.; 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren with another one due in September and one step-great-grandchild; a sister, Joyce (Alton) Leedahl, Benson, Minn.; two brothers, Loran (Mona) Hudson, Milnor, N.D. and Ray (Marlys) Hudson, Colfax, N.D.; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Fred and Marie; her husband, LeRoy; son, Scott; two sisters, Edna Hudson and Ruth Hahn and nephew, Russel Hahn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the family and will be dispersed to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hospice of the Red River Valley and Bethany Homes.
