Lucille C. Opskar
Lucille Catherine Kunkel, the daughter of Peter and Dorothy (Olson) Kunkel, was born on October 2, 1919 at Nielsville, Minn., where she grew up and received her education. She graduated from Nielsville High School in 1937.
Lucille was married to Ervin M. Opskar on January 1, 1939, at Nielsville. After their marriage, they lived in Nielsville for a short period of time before moving to Moorhead, Minn. Lucille was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, and an active member of Royal Neighbors of America.
In June of 1999, Lucille and Ervin moved to Lisbon, N.D. In November of that year, she became a resident of the Lisbon Medical Center Nursing Home. Lucille died there on Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at the age of 82.
She is survived by her husband, Ervin, Lisbon; a daughter, Emmy (Dennis) Dotzenrod-Strander, Lisbon, N.D.; two sons, Erling (Betty) Opskar, Princeton, Minn. and Dennis (Susan) Opskar, Derby, Kansas; a sister, Beverly Nygaard, Salida, Colo.; and eight grandchildren, Allen and Rudy Dotzenrod, and Bryan, Christopher, John, Kaylie, Lyle and Stephen Opskar.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Roy, and by two sons, Leonard and Paul.
A memorial service was held Friday, March 22, 2002 at the Lisbon Medical Center Nursing Home. The Funeral was held Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, Minn. Burial was at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Moorhead.
Korsmo Funeral Service, Moorhead was in charge of the arrangements.

Doyle Kargel
Funeral services for Doyle Kargel, 78, Pelican Rapids, Minn., were held on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Pelican Rapids. Reverend Dale Pepelnjak officiated. Mr. Kargel died on Saturday, March 16, 2002 at Parkside Lutheran Nursing Home, Lisbon, where he was cared for the last 10 days.
Doyle Lee Kargel, son of Emil and Margaret (Helton) Kargel, was born on August 9, 1923 in Hensel, N.D. He attended high school at Crystal, N.D. In March 1943, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and became an aerial engineer in the European Theater. His plane was shot down over Germany in early 1944. He was wounded and captured by the Germans where he spent time in a German prison camp. For his bravery, he received the Purple Heart and many air and service medals. Upon returning to America, he spent time in the Veterans Hospital in Walla Walla, Wash. Upon his discharge he returned to Crystal and worked for his father.
On October 31, 1945, he married Henrietta “Hank” Nina Hendrickson in Grand Forks. They lived in Crystal for six months before moving to Grand Forks where Doyle attended college and sold cars for a few years. In 1947, Doyle and Ardell Bestland started B & K Airspray. Doyle was a crop sprayer and flew mail runs between Minneapolis and Grand Forks. He later started Grand Forks Airmotive with Louis Gershman. In the early 1970s, he owned and operated motels in Grand Forks. In 1976, he and his wife, Henrietta retired to a lake home on Fish Lake, near Pelican Rapids. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, rural Pelican Rapids, and he was also a lifetime member and commander of the Grand Forks DAV.
He is survived by his wife, Henrietta “Hank” Kargel, rural Pelican Rapids; one daughter, Susan (Rick) Neameyer, Lisbon; one son, Donald (Kathy) Kargel, Houston, Tex.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Duane Kargel, rural Pelican Rapids; two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Ervin Ahrndt, Ardell Bestland, Roy Bondley, Jim Dewar, Duane Kargel and Andy Ness. Honorary pallbearers were Arlin Brosowski, Jim Devine, Louis Gershman and Walt Kendall.
Music was provided by organist Esther Larson and soloist Tally Miosek.
Military honors presented by the VFW Post #5252.
Interment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Pelican Rapids.

Chester B. Tysdal
Funeral services for Chester B. Tysdal, 83, Page, were held on Monday, March 11, 2002, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Page. Pastor Paul Simmons officiated. Mr. Tysdal died on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo.
Chester B. Tysdal, son of Bert and Karen (Koerson) Tysdal, was born on May 8, 1918 near Halstad, Minn., where he grew up and attended school. He farmed with his family until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served on the USS West Virginia until his discharge in 1945. In 1947, he moved to Page, where he farmed.
On February 20, 1959, he married Eldice Satrom. They farmed in the Page area until retiring in 1985. He helped his son on the farm until moving to the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon in October 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Eldice Tysdal, Page; two sons, Byron Tysdal, Fargo, and Bruce (Jamie) Tysdal, Page; one sister, Alice Johnson, Mentor, Minn.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tom and Frank Tysdal; and one sister, Ethel England.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Lynn Holbrook, Larry Holbrook, Louie Rieke, Marvin Johnson, Jim Zerface, Jerome Drogen, Steve Baasch and Elmer “Red” Halland.
Music was provided by organist Marjorie Anderson and soloist Tony Baasch.
Military honors presented by the Erie Legion.

Ethel G. Nordquist
Funeral services for Ethel G. Nordquist, 94, Valley City (formerly Litchville), were held on Thursday, March 14, 2002 in the Evangelical Free Church, Valley City. Pastor Phillip Ostland officiated. Mrs. Nordquist died on Friday, March 8, 2002 at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City.
Ethel G. Selsand, daughter of Anton L. and Suniva Amelia (Nilsen) Selsand, was born on September 3, 1907 in Northland Township, Ransom County, near Fort Ransom. She attended Bell School in Ransom County before moving to Valley City, where she worked and went to school. She graduated from Valley City High School in 1928 and then attended Valley City Sate University where she attained her teaching certificate. She taught for a year before her marriage.
On June 23, 1929, she married Carl Victor Nordquist in North LaMoure Church, rural Litchville. They farmed in Svea Township, rural Litchville, until their retirement. She was a member of Elim Evangelical Free Church, a charter member of Svea Homemakers Club and was involved in 4-H for many years. She entered the Sheyenne Care Center in 1997.
She is survived by three sons, Richard (Edna) Nordquist, Litchville, Kenwood (Dorothy) Nordquist, Great Falls, Mont., and Lowell (Carol) Nordquist, Lexington, S.C.; one daughter, Syneva (Willis) Heupel, Great Falls, Mont.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Eline Boeckman, St. Paul, Minn., Jennie Boile, Ventura, Calif., and Helen Walenski, Millbrae, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl Nordquist, who died April 28, 1994; five sisters and one brother.
Interment at Elim Cemetery, rural Litchville.

Raymond J. Bot
Funeral services for Raymond J. Bot, 82, Shoreview, Minn., were held on March 28, 2002, at Holcomb, Henry and Boom North Chapel. Mr. Bot died March 23, 2002 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.
Raymond J. Bot, son of John and Gladys Bot, was born on April 12, 1919, in Lisbon.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, June (Anderson) Bot; sons, John (Mary Lou) Bot and Richard Bot; daughters Becky (Jim) Borden and Cherrie (Keith) Holloway; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren;one brother John (Dee) Bot and one sister Joanne (Eugene) Odegard. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Gladys Bot; two brothers, Douglas and Eldon, and sister Elaine.
Military Honors were presented by the VFW Post #7555.
Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Bert Schultz
Funeral services for Bert Schultz, 80, Pelican Rapids, Minn., were held on Thursday, April 4, 2002 at Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Pelican Rapids, Minn. Reverend Chris Hill officiated. Mr. Schultz died Monday, April 1, 2002 at his home, near Pelican Rapids, Minn.
Bert Schultz, son of Herman and Gina (Odegaard) Schultz was born on May 31, 1921, in Sheldon. He great up in Sheldon and graduated from Sheldon High School. Bert served in the United States Army during World War II.
On July 4, 1948, he married Florence Ruth Olson in Moorhead, Minn. They lived in Sheldon where Bert owned and operated the Ford Garage. After moving to Battle Lake, Minn. he owned and operated the Gamble and Television Store and Chevrolet Garage for many years. Bert also served as Mayor in Elbow Lake. Next they moved to Pelican Rapids where Bert worked for John Deere Implement, retiring in 1987. Florence passed away on February 10, 1995.
He is survived by two sisters Hazel Danielson, Pelican Rapids and Olga Graham, Cape Coral, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Florence Schultz, two brothers, Benny and Cyrus Schultz, and two sisters, Anna Bjugstad and Gertrude McGurk.
Military Honors: VFW Post #5252.
Interment at Grove Lake Cemetery, rural Pelican Rapids.

James A. Walterson
Funeral services for James A. Walterson, 82, were held on Saturday, March 30, 2002, at High Prairie Lutheran Church, LaMoure. Reverend Gayler Korsmo officiated. Mr.Walterson died Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
James A. Walterson, son of Edwin and Tillie (Mennis) Walterson was born on June 29, 1919 in Blackloam Township, near Verona. He grew up and attended school in LaMoure County at Blackloam Country School. Mr. Walterton farmed on the family farm his whole life and lived on the family farmstead until the time of his death. He was a member of High Prairie Lutheran Church, where he served on various council committees and on the cemetery board. Mr. Walterson served 34 years as Blackloam Township Treasurer and was a member of the Sons of Norway. He was active in the Farmers Union Co-op and SVACA.
He is survived by two brothers, Howard Walterson, Jamestown and Millard (Lolly) Walterson, Miles City, Mont.; two sisters, Myrna Kratz, Valley City and Doris (Leonard) Lere, Crystal, Minn.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Thelma Anderson.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Douglas Kratz, Virgil Kratz, Gary Anderson, Ronald Anderson, Loren Larson and Randy Larson.
Music was provided by organist Kaylyn Anderson.
Interment at High Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, LaMoure.

Loren A. Grant
Funeral services for Loren A. Grant, 82, Enderlin, were held on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at First Lutheran Church, Enderlin. Mr. Grant died on Sunday, March 31, 2002 in Lisbon Community Hospital, Lisbon.
Loren A. Grant, son of Sam and Anne Grant, was born on November 12, 1919 on the Strand Homestead, east of Sheldon. The family moved to Enderlin when Loren was three and he resided there until his death. He graduated from Enderlin High School. He joined the Civil Conservation Corp in 1938 and worked there for 1 1/2 years. After that, he served in the Army for 5 1/2 years. He hired out on the Soo Line Railroad in 1946 and after 35 years, he retired in 1981.
On April 20, 1946, he married Esther Scholz in St. Paul, Minn. Loren was treasurer of the UTU for many year. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Esther Grant, Enderlin; one daughter, Diane (Dale) Beling, Fargo; three sons, Jeff Grant, Sheldon, Erik Grant, Lisbon, and David (Debbie) Grant, West Fargo; three sisters, Marlys (Lowell) Lundberg, Fargo, Rita Hunter, Andover, Mass., and Carol (Jerry) Scheinberg, Granite Bay, Calif.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Anne Grant; one sister, Lois Stevens; and his eldest son, Chad.
Honorary pallbearers were all in attendance.
Music was provided by organist Shirley Hanson and soloist Kim Mann.
Interment at Enderlin Cemetery, Enderlin.
Armstrong Funeral Home, Enderlin, was in charge of arrangements.
