Donald Kennedy
Funeral services for Donald Kennedy, 73, Armstrong, Iowa, were held on Monday, March 25, 2002 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Armstrong. Father Jerry Cosgrove officiated. Mr. Kennedy died on Thursday, March 21, 2002 near Forest City, Iowa.
Donald Kennedy, son of Michael J and Martha (Engesser) Kennedy, was born on March 9, 1929 in Estherville, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Seneca High School.
On May 29, 1950, he married Wanda Follett in Estherville. After their marriage, the couple farmed and made their home in the Armstrong, Iowa area. The couple later owned and operated the Shaperal Restaurant in Armstrong for 20 years. Don worked part-time for Maple Hill Ag. for the past several years. Mrs. Kennedy passed away on November 12, 2001. Don was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Armstrong.
He is survived by seven daughters, Theresa (Van) Satlak, Lisbon, Marjorie Howard, Ventura, Calif., Katherine (Richard) Sturm, Armstrong, Iowa, Michelle (Gary) Leach, Armstrong, Rosalie (John) Kubesheski), Dubuque, Iowa, Jeannie (Willard) Klingenberg, Maquoketa, Iowa, and Jacqueline (Christopher) Willard, Mankato, Minn.; two sons, Michael (Dawn) Kennedy, Dubuque, Iowa and Timothy (Ruth Ann) Kennedy, Stillwater, Minn.; two brothers, Robert (Peggy) Kennedy, Spokane, Wash., and Wayne (Alyce) Kennedy, St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Kathleen Cantlon, Schuyler, Neb., and Marjorie Kennedy, Albuquerque, N.M.; 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wanda Kennedy; two sisters, Sister Leah Kennedy and Deloris Looft; and two brothers, Edward and Gerald Kennedy.
Interment will be at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Armstrong, Iowa.

Clara Smedshammer
Funeral services for Clara Smedshammer, 97, Valley City, were held on Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. Pastor Paul Huso and Pastor Mark Ostgarden officiated. Mrs. Smedshammer died on Friday, March 22, 2002 at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.
Clara Rockswold, daughter of Per and Serianna (Haarsager) Rockswold, was born on January 16, 1905 in Litchville Township, rural LaMoure County. She attended Litchville Township grade school and graduated from Litchville High School. After graduation, she earned her teaching certificate from Valley City State University and taught rural schools for three terms, 1923-1926. She was an active member of North LaMoure Lutheran Church.
On May 14, 1926, she married Jacob B. Smedshammer. They farmed until moving to Valley City in October 1954. She worked at Woolworth’s Store for 14 years. They were members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. Her husband, Jacob, died November 3, 1961. She entered the Sheyenne Care Center in September 2001 and Mercy Hospital in December 2001.
She is survived by three daughters, Ethelyn (Conrad) Paulson, Marion, Lois (Clinton) Peterson, Kathryn, and Arlys (Ken) Bates, Bowman; one son, Oren (Nadine) Smedshammer, Santa Rosa, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Jeanette Smedshammer, Santa Rosa, Calif.; one brother, Palmer (Betty) Rockswold, Egan, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Florence Rockswold, Litchville; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jacob Smedshammer; one son, Myron Smedshammer; one granddaughter; three brothers and three sisters.
Interment at North LaMoure Cemetery, rural Litchville.
Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, was in charge of arrangements.

Esther I. Timm
Funeral services for Esther Ione Timm, 86, LaMoure, were held on Monday, March 25, 2002 at Dahlstrom Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Thomas Puffe officiated. Mrs. Timm died on Friday, March 22, 2002 at the Oakes Good Samaritan Center, Oakes.
Esther Ione Naugle, daughter of Curtis and Ethel (Belcher) Naugle, was born on April 4, 1915 in Bloomington, Ill. She moved with her family to Twin Valley, Minn., where she attended school. The family later moved to the Verona area.
On April 17, 1934, she married Elmer Timm in LaMoure. They farmed in the Berlin area until 1947 when they moved to LaMoure. In 1997, they moved to Grandview Heights. Elmer and Esther became residents at the Good Samaritan Center, Oakes, in February 2000. Elmer died on February 19, 2000.
She is survived by one son, Larry (Karen) Timm, Jamestown; one daughter, Marilyn (Rodger) Fischer, Berlin, N.D.; one brother, Clifford Naugle, Bloomington, Ill.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer Timm; one daughter; one sister; four brothers; and one grandson.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Gerald Worrel, Darwin Worrel, Kenneth Worrel, Richard Worrel, Mark Fischer and Tim Fischer.
Music was provided by organist Loretta Rasmusson.
Interment at Rosehill Cemetery, LaMoure.
Dahlstrom Funeral Home, LaMoure, was in charge of arrangements.

Sarah E. Baker
Funeral services for Sarah Ellen Baker, 94, Breckenridge, Minn., were held on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. Reverend Alan R. Werth officiated. Mrs. Baker died on Friday, March 22, 2002 at St. Francis Home, Breckenridge, Minn.
Sarah Ellen Krueger, daughter of Fred C. and Hannettie (Eastman) Krueger, was born on May 29, 1907. She was baptized on July 7, 1907 at Sleepy Eye at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton on November 29, 1978. She attended grade school in Lisbon and graduated from Enderlin High School in 1924. She worked in the Enderlin and Fargo areas prior to marriage.
On June 19, 1928, she married William W. Baker in Moorhead. The couple farmed in the Lisbon area until moving in 1937 to farm around the Great Bend/Hankinson area. In 1954, the couple moved to Wahpeton where she worked at the Wahpeton Laundry until 1964, at which time she worked at the Leach Home as a nurse’s aide until her retirement in 1971. In 1995, she became a resident of the Leach Home until her transfer to St. Francis Home in Breckenridge this month. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
She is survived by three sons, Wesley (Darlene) Baker, Aurora, Minn., Alfred (Ardeen) Baker, Ely, Minn., and Wayne (Janet) Baker, Wahpeton; three daughters, Ethel Hoefs, Breckenridge, Minn., Florence Menne (Jim) Bladow, Hankinson, and Shirley (Duane) Marohl, Wahpeton; 26 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William W. Baker, who died on May 20, 1984; an infant son, Ernest, in 1942; one grandson; one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Art and Wilbur Krueger; and one sister, Laura Utke.
Interment at Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Great Bend, N.D.

Lorraine M. Janz
Funeral services for Lorraine Marie Janz, 80, Fargo, were held on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Olivet Lutheran Church, Fargo. Mrs. Janz died on Friday, March 22, 2002 in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Lorraine Marie Schimming, daughter of Erick and Helen (Johnson) Schimming, was born on December 12, 1921 in Lucca, N.D. She grew up in the Nome and Lucca area, graduating from Lucca High School.
On November 15, 1943, she married Harvey A. Janz in Lucca. After their marriage, Harvey and Lorraine lived in Enderlin until they moved to Fargo in 1951. While living in Fargo, she worked for Welu Dental Labs for 25 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Janet (Butch) Loomer, Sheldon, and Sandra (Keith) Berg, Columbus, N.D.; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Roger (Betty) Schimming, Fargo, and Milton Schimming, Sheldon. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey Janz, who died in 1999; one brother; and four sisters.
Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

Clarice S. Horgan
Memorial services for Clarice Susan Horgan, 86, Helena, Mont., were held on Monday, March 25, 2002 at Borthwick Mortuaries, Honolulu, Hawaii. Mrs. Horgan died on Thursday, March 21, 2002 in Helena.
Clarice Susan Olson, daughter of Alfred and Margaret Olson, was born on October 2, 1915 in Veblin, S.D. She graduated from high school in Fairmont, N.D. She then entered Swedish Nursing School in Minneapolis, graduating as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist. After World War II, she moved to Honolulu, Hawaii and worked in hospitals there.
In 1950, she married Charles Horgan. In 1955, they moved with their son to San Francisco, eventually settling in the Santa Clara Valley of California. In Santa Clara, Clarice continued to work as a Registered Nurse until retiring in the mid 1970s. She continued to live in Santa Clara until 1998, when she moved to Helena, Mont. to be closer to her son and family.
She is survived by one son, Daniel (Leila) Horgan, Jefferson City, Mont.; three grandchildren; one brother, Dr. Allen (Judy) Olson, Enderlin; one sister-in-law, Mary (Bill) Hanna, Kailua, Hawaii; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Horgan; and two brothers, Paul and Norman Olson.
Interment will be next to her husband, Charles, at the National Cemetery of the Pacific.
Hagler-Anderson Mortuary, Helena, Mont., was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Lloyd Coleman
Funeral services for Kenneth Lloyd Coleman, 73, Gwinner, were held on Friday, April 12, 2002 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Gwinner. Reverend Kirk Douglas officiated. Mr. Coleman died Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at the Lake Region Healthcare Corporation in Fergus Falls, Minn.
Mr. Coleman, son of Glenn and Esther (Bruns) Coleman, was born on July 25, 1928. He attended rural school near Crete, and graduated from Oakes High School in Oakes with the class of 1945. After his schooling, Kenneth began farming with his father in the Crete area.
On October 1, 1950, he married Martha Payton, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Stirum, N.D. In 1958, Kenneth began working at the Melroe Bobcat Company in Gwinner, where he worked for eighteen years, while continuing to farm. In 1965, Kenneth and Martha moved into Gwinner, where they have continued to live until the time of Kenneth’s death. Kenneth was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Gwinner.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Coleman, Gwinner; three sons, Johnnie Coleman, Oakes, Jerry (Joan) Coleman, Bismarck, and Kevin (Sheila) Coleman, Oakes; two daughters, Barbara (Jess) Smith, Hankinson, and Cindy (Joey) Enderson, Gwinner; two brothers, Gerald (Jean) Coleman and Lysle (Darlene) Coleman, all of Oakes; twelve grand children and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Kenneth J. Coleman, Randy Coleman, Brandon Enderson, Glen Coleman, Brian Engquist and Neil Engquist.
Music was provided by organist LaVonne Nelson and soloists Nate Douglas and Raissa Johnson.
Interment at Oakes View Cemetery, Oakes.
Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes, was in charge of arrangements.

Gordon F. Keyes
Memorial services for Gordon F. Keyes, 81, Tucson, Ariz., were held on Sunday, March 3, 2002 in Tucson. Mr. Keyes died on Tuesday, February 26, 2002 in Tucson.
Gordon F. Keyes, son of Elfin and David Keyes, was born in Buttzville on February 26, 1921. He grew up in Lisbon, graduating from Lisbon High School. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1959. Upon retiring from the Navy, he had his own mutual funds business and later sold real estate. In 1990 he retired from his business and moved to Green Valley, Ariz. He and his wife later moved to Tucson.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Keyes, Tucson, Ariz.; one son, Bruce Keyes; one daughter, Nancy (Morris) Minton; one sister, Laura Ferguson, Fullerton, Calif.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Earl and one sister, Frances.
A military memorial at Fort Rosecrans, San Diego, will be held at a later date.
Inurnment at Fort Rosecrans, San Diego.
