John T. Hewitt
Funeral services for John T. Hewitt, 85, Fargo, were held on March 24, 2003 at First Lutheran Church, Fargo. Mr. Hewitt died March 20, 2003 at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo under the care of Hospice.
John Theodore “Ted” Hewitt, son of Charles and Olive (Pendleton) Hewitt was born on March 7, 1918 near Cogswell, N.D. After graduating from Forman High School, he spent one year working in Connecticut and then returned to work on the family farm.
On September 12, 1942, he married
Rogna Solberg in Moorhead. They farmed in the Cogswell area until 1944. In May of 1945 Ted joined the Fargo Police Department working up from patrolman to captain. After retiring in 1981, he and Rogna moved from Fargo to rural Glyndon, Minn. Ted and Rogna moved back to Fargo in July of 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Rogna Hewitt, Fargo; one son, Jay “Tom” Hewitt, Stillwater, Minn.; one daughter Roxann (Bill) Haggerty, Mountainside, N.J.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Cod (Marj) Hewitt, Stan (Betty) Hewitt, Gwinner; one sister, Jane (Jack) Delvo; and one sister-in-law, Doris Hewitt. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Charles Hewitt and Harrison Hewitt; and two sisters, Lucy Hewitt, and Marjorie Dady.
Interment at a later date.

Roy W. Ernst
Funeral services for Roy W. Ernst, 90, Fargo, were held on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at Faith United Methodist Church, Fargo. Mr. Ernst died Saturday, March 22, 2003 at the Villa Maria, Fargo, N.D.
Roy William Ernst, son of Emil and Minnie (Kraft) Ernst was born on September 19, 1912. Roy attended school and graduated from Enderlin High School in 1931. He helped local farmers until 1935, where he then worked for the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC). He helped build the road in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park at Medora, N.D. In 1937 he went to Chicago, Ill. to attend the Coyne Electric School. He worked at a steel mill in Gary, Ind. until the mill went on strike. He was then employed at Star Electric in Detroit Lakes, Minn. Roy enlisted in the army in March 1942 and trained as a radioman.
On November 14, 1942, he married
Dorothy F. Nelson, Montpelier, N.D. in the Little Brown Church in the Vale near Nashua, Iowa, while he was on military leave. He went overseas February 1944, serving in the Field Artillery Wireless Communication Service. He later helped with the liberation of allied prisoner of war camps in Germany. He was discharged in October 1945. He returned and worked for various electrical companies before starting a 30 year career as an electrician in the Engineering Division at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Fargo. He retired from there in September of 1977. He and his wife Dorothy moved to Riverview Place, Fargo in December 2000. In November of 2001, Roy and his wife became residents of Villa Maria, Fargo. She passed away January 15, 2003. He was a member of the Fargo Rifle Club for 20 years and was very active in his church’s Boy Scout Troop. Roy was a long-time member of Faith United Methodist Church.
He is survived by two sons, LeRoy (Judy) Ernst, Fargo, and David (Barbara) Ernst, Lilburn, Ga.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Melvin (Bertha)Ernst, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, his parents, and two brothers, twin, Ralph Ernst and Marvin Ernst.
Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.

Janice M. Bartholomay
Funeral services for Janice M. Bartholomay, 66, Sheldon, N.D. were held on Monday, March 10, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin. Reverend Mike Toomey officiated. Mrs. Bartholomay died Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at her home, near Sheldon under the care of hospice.
Janice M. Bunn, daughter of George and Edna (Vangsness) Bunn was born on February 19, 1937 in Enderlin. She attended school in Sheldon. She also attended Interstate Business College, Fargo. Janice worked for Tri-State Auction in Fargo for one year. She worked for Mutual of New York Insurance in Fargo for a few years.
On October 7, 1961, she married
Ray Bartholomay in Sheldon. Ray and Janice farmed and ranched near Sheldon. Janice was a past member of Evening Star Homemakers. She served on the Sheldon School Board from July 1984-June 1996. She served on the Advisory Board of Maryhill Manor from September 1999 to September 2002 and served as Greene Township treasurer from 1995 to the present. Janice was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin. She was a member of Martha Circle and WELCA treasurer for many years.
She is survived by her husband Ray, Sheldon; five sons, Daniel (Jana) Bartholomay, Sheldon, Jonathan (Penny) Bartholomay, Enderlin, Matthew (Michele) Bartholomay, Sheldon, Ryan Bartholomay, Sheldon, Andrew (Tracy) Bartholomay, Sheldon; one daughter, Naomi Hainsworth, Sheldon; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, George (Marlene) Bunn, Sheldon and Donald Bunn, St. Paul. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Micah Bartholomay, Aaron Bartholomay, Bradley Bunn, Kevin Bunn, Leo Bartholomay, and Robert Buss.
Music was provided by organist Joan Schlecht and soloist Don Stansbery.
Interment at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Sheldon.

Donna M. Pahl
Funeral services for Donna M. Pahl, 56, Jamestown, N.D. were held on Monday, March 10, 2003 at Haut Funeral Chapel, Jamestown. Father John Kizito officiated. Mrs. Pahl died Thursday, March 6, 2003 at her home in Jamestown.
Donna Marie Smith, daughter of Earl and Esther (Bohnenkamp) Smith was born on December 31, 1946 in Oakes. She attended and graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1964 at Omaha, Neb.
She returned home to Jamestown where she has been a housewife and mother.
She is survived by her husband, George Pahl, Jamestown, two sons, Daniel Withers and Doug Feigert, both of Jamestown; two daughters, Tammy Rivard and Georgia Lynn Pahl, both of Jamestown; four grandchildren, her mother, Esther Sobeski, Lisbon; one brother Walter Smith, Rock River, Wyo.; three sisters, Dorothy (Jerry) Larson, LaMoure, Carol (Gerald) Pischel, Beulah, and Mary (Jerome) Fick, Litchville. She was preceded in death by her father, one grandchild and two brothers.
Interment at Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

Mary Ellen Devitt
Funeral services for Mary Ellen Devitt, 69, Lisbon, N.D. were held on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Lisbon. Mrs. Devitt died Saturday, March 8, 2003 at Lisbon Area Health Services, Lisbon.
Mary Ellen Jones, daughter of Francis and Frieda (Reinke) Jones was born on June 25, 1933 near Mohall, N.D. She moved to Lisbon with her parents in 1935. She attended St. Aloysius School for eight years. She attended Lisbon High School, graduating in 1951. In June 1951 she enrolled in college at Valley City. After eight weeks of college she began teaching school. She taught in rural schools in Allegheny, Shenford, Casey, and Island Park townships.
On May 29, 1954, she married
Laurence Devitt, at St. Aloysius Parsonage, Lisbon. They lived in Underwood, Riverdale, and Minot, before returning to Lisbon, where they have resided since October 1959. Mary Ellen worked at the Howell Rexall Drug from 1965 to 1971. She then resumed her teacher’s education and graduated from Valley City State College in July 1971. She began her teaching career in August 1971 at Lisbon Elementary School, where she taught until her retirement in 1994. She was a member of St. Aloysius Church and St. Anne Circle. She was a charter member of Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
She is survived by her husband, Laurence Devitt, Lisbon; two sons, Terry (Pamala) Broken Arrow, Okla., and Richard (Kirsten) Big Lake, Minn.; one daughter, Dr. Mary K. Devitt, Jamestown, daughter-in-law, Judy Devitt, St. Paul; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild .

Milton A. Tosse
Funeral services for Milton A. Tosse, 82, Lidgerwood, were held on Thursday, February 27, 2003 at Bergen Lutheran Church, Lidgerwood. Reverend Art Hoium officiated. Mr. Tosse died Sunday, February 23, 2003 at Oakes Community Hospital, Oakes.
Milton Arnold Tosse, son of Mads and Sarah (Anderson) Tosse was born on March 14, 1920 in Marbore Township, near Geneseo, N.D. He attended school in Geneseo.
On October 8, 1944, he married
Estella Yagow in Gwinner. Milton and Estella farmed near Geneseo until retiring in 1986, when they moved into Lidgerwood. In January 2001, Milton entered the Four Seasons Health Care Center in Forman. He was a life long member of Bergen Lutheran Church in Lidgerwood.
He is survived by his wife, Estella Tosse, Forman; one son, Brian Tosse, Lidgerwood; three daughters, Elaine Marlow, Veblen, S.D., Donna Bucklin and Marlene (Gerald) Balvin, all of Claire City, S.D.; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Bertha Simonson, Springfield, Ore., Judith (Victor) Simonson, Fargo, and Stella (Kenneth) Hendricks, Breckenridge. He was preceded in death by one son, Merlin, one grandson, Christopher Bucklin, his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Gerald Best, Manford Tosse, Justin Balvin, James Bucklin Jr., Rick Lyman, and Ronald Lyman.
Music was provided by organist Curt Brownlee and soloist John Pallansch. Ed and Jean Langeliers also provided special music for the service.
Interment at Bergen Cemetery, Lidgerwood.

Marie McCannell
Funeral services for Marie McCannell, 94, Hillsboro, N.D. were held on Monday, March 10, 2003 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Hillsboro. Mrs. McCannell died Thursday, March 6, 2003 at Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home.
Marie Golliet, daughter of William and Mary (Marassick) Golliet, was born on September 18, 1908, near Gardner, N.D. She grew up on the family, farm, attended school in Gardner and at Sacred Heart Academy, Fargo, graduating from Gardner High School. Marie then attended Dakota Business College, Fargo.
On October 27, 1930, she married
Clair Georgeson at St. Rose of Lima Church, Hillsboro. Together they made their home in Fargo where they owned and operated Model Grocery in South Fargo. Marie also worked as a Recorder for the Royal Neighbors of America Insurance Company, Fargo for over 20 years. Clair passed away in 1960.
On December 26, 1969, she married
Robert McCannell in Fargo. Together they made their home in Jamestown before moving to Warren, Minn. in 1971. They owned and operated the Lumberyard in Warren for many years before retirement. Bob died in 1998. Marie moved to Hillsboro in 1999. She was very active in the Eagles Club for over 50 years and was also an active member of the Catholic Church.
She is survived by two sons, Richard (Vi) Georgeson, Hillsboro and George (Michelle) Georgeson, Bismarck; four daughters, Sylvia (Ken) Kensinger, McLeod, Carol (Bill) Burtness, Fargo, Mary (Art) Parmellee, Niwot, Colo. and Jean Phillips, Minneapolis; daughter-in-law, Donna, Fargo; 22 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one brother, Joe Golliet. She was preceded in death by both her husbands, one son, William, infant daughter, Mary Jane, two grandchildren, two brothers, Herb and Eli and her sisters, Sylvia and Esther. .
Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Fargo.

David C. Nybeck
Funeral services for David C. Nybeck, 58, Valley City, N.D. were held on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City. Reverend Ellen Arthur officiated. Mr. Nybeck died Friday, March 7, 2003 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
David C. Nybeck, son of Clarence and Mamie (Edlund) Nybeck was born on November 14, 1944 in Enderlin. He grew up and attended school in Nome and graduated from Nome High School in 1963. He went on to attend business school in Fargo. He then worked for a time as a bail bondsman.
On September 12, 1975, he married
Avis Dagman in Seattle, Wash. David and Avis lived in various cities in Washington and North Dakota before settling in Valley. He was working in insurance sales at the time of their marriage. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City.
He is survived by his wife Avis, Valley City, one brother, Dick (Laurine) Nybeck, Ramsey, Minn. and one sister, Gerri (Ed) Lundby, Hastings, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Interment at Enderlin Cemetery, Enderlin.
