Lyle D. Davis
Lyle D. Davis, 78, Fargo, died Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. At Lyle’s request, no service will be held.
Lyle D. Davis, son of Leon and Harriet (Finks) Davis was born on September 15, 1924 in Lisbon. He grew up in Elliott, and graduated from Elliott High School in 1942. He was drafted into the service and served in the Army from 1943-46. He served overseas from November 1944 to February 1946. He was wounded in Germany in February 1945 and also saw action in Battle of the Bulge during Christmas 1944. He returned home after the war and attended North Dakota State University. He began working at Northwest Airlines in 1947 as a transportation agent, and retired from there in 1986.
On April 17, 1949, he married
Phyllis Lambrecht in Lisbon.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Davis, Fargo; two children, Marlo (Sheila) Davis, Crookston, Minn. and Kim Mayer, San Ramon, Calif; four grandchildren; and one brother, Keith (Dorothy) Davis, Fargo.

Mike L. Swanson
Editor’s note: In last week’s Gazette the name of Mr. Swanson’s wife was inadvertently omitted from the list of survivors. Below is the corrected version.
Funeral services for Mike L. Swanson, 79, Lisbon, were held on Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon. Reverend Norman Anderson officiated. Mr. Swanson died Sunday, August 24, 2003 at Oakes Good Samaritan Center, Oakes under Hospice care.
Mike L. Swanson, son of Henning and Olga (Gunderson) Swanson was born on February 18, 1924 in rural Milnor. He attended school in rural Milnor. He was in the U.S. Army during WWII in Germany and France.
On November 2, 1947, he married
Joan Williamson in Moorhead. He worked at the Fargo Foundry. He worked at various jobs in the Lisbon area including M&G Service, Lisbon Bowling Alley, Red & Gold Hut, First & Last Chance, Park Canteen and Pavilion, Ranes Motors, Bergman Motors, Saxerud Chevrolet and Berubes until retiring. He also had worked as a house painter. He was a member of the Lisbon VFW and Gwinner American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Swanson, Lisbon; three daughters, Connie (Jerry) Zetocha, Gwinner, Val (Brian) Bjork, Forman, and Marilee (Randy Moll) Johnson, Sterling, Colo.; two sons, Michael (Rose) Swanson, Lincoln, Neb., and Steven Swanson, Grand Forks; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl (Norma) Rodlund, Bismarck; two sisters, Esther Rivenes, Rapid City, S.D. and Norma (Marc) Christianson, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin Swanson and a son, Gary.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Ron Greenmyer, Darin Beck, Mike Sitz, Matt Johnson, Tyler Swanson, Grady Schearer, Gary Zetocha, and Scott Holman.
Music was provided by organist Cindy Hagel and soloist Larry Ketterling.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon

Mildred G. Bergene
Funeral services for Mildred G. Bergene, 93, Fergus Falls, were held on Thursday, September 4, 2003 at Bruflat Lutheran Church, Portland, N.D. Reverend Eric Hullstrand officiated. Ms. Bergene died Friday, August 29, 2003 at Broen Memorial Home, Fergus Falls.
Mildred G. Bergene, daughter of Christian A. and Anne (Hagan) Bergene was born on June 8, 1910 at Portland, N.D. She was baptized and confirmed at Bruflat Lutheran Church in Portland and educated in the public schools there. She graduated from Mayville Teachers College and received her Bachelor of Science Degree from North Dakota Agricultural College, now NDSU. She continued her studies for many summer sessions at the University of Minnesota. She taught at Lisbon and Deadwood, S.D. as well as Ely, Benson, Henning and Winona, Minn. and served as school librarian at Ely and International Falls, Minn. She returned to Portland in the late 1960s where she cared for her older sister, Clara. She was a lifelong member of Bruflat Church and a former member of many organizations including AAUW. She moved from the family home in Portland to Goldenwood Apartments in Fergus Falls in 1990. She entered the Broen Home in 1997.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Clarence, Hartvick, Albert and Theodore, and five sisters, Alma Gullickson, Emma Brend, Mabel Larson, Amelia Roberts and Clara.
Interment at Perry Lutheran Cemetery, Primrose Twp., rural Portland.

Rev. Ralph D. Cushing
Rev. Ralph D. Cushing, 87, Moorhead, Minnesota died Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at Eventide Nursing Home, Moorhead, Minn.
He was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on July 7, 1916 and grew up in Quincy, Mass. He attended Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy. It was there that he met Lenora C. Mallory. They were married
in her hometown of Hamilton, Ontario Canada on December 28, 1942 and celebrated 59 years of marriage prior to her death in April of 2002.
After moving to North Dakota in 1955 he graduated from Minot State College. He later completed the Methodist Course of Study at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. Throughout his life he continued his education by taking courses at Concordia College, Gordon-Conwell Seminary, Union Seminary (New York), and Boston College.
Rev. Cushing pastored churches in: Port Dover, Ontario; Staples and West Rock, Minn.; Benedict, Sawyer, Butte, Keif, Rolla, Dunseith, Wyndmere, Lidgerwood, Forman, Antelope, Holmes, Pleasant View, Thompson, Mott and Newburg, N.D. They retired and moved to Moorhead in 1987.
Rev. Cushing will long be remembered for his meaningful prayers. He loved working with the youth in his churches and often directed them in dramas that were enjoyed by the whole community. He also served as a counselor at Wesley Acres Bible Camp near Rogers, N.D. for a number of years. Leatherwork and copper tooling were crafts that he enjoyed sharing with the Vacation Bible Schools in his churches. He was extremely pleased to have a number of the youth from his churches, including one of his sons, become ministers.
Rev. Cushing was a piano technician. He tuned and repaired pianos for many of Lenora's piano students as well as others in the community. While living in Rolla he maintained the pianos for the International Music Camp at the International Peace Gardens. In addition, he was a staunch Republican, prolific reader and lifelong Boston Red Sox fan.
Rev. Cushing was preceded in death by his wife, sister Claudia Perkins and his brother Harold Cushing. He is survived by three sons: Dr. Ralph D. (Dr. Barbara), Grosse Pointe, Mich.; Daniel A. (Kimberly "Puffi"), Fargo; Rev. D. Stanley (Regina), Whitinsville, Mass.; two daughters: Anne G. Cushing, Grand Forks; Lenora E. Cushing, Quincy, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; Todd (Emilie), Dr. Laurel, Brian, Nick, Christy (Ryan) Jenks, Rick, Josh, Megan Rorabaugh, David, Sara and Todd and a great-grandson Zachary Jenks.
At the time of their 50th Wedding Anniversary a scholarship fund was established to honor Rev. Ralph and Lenora Cushing and to assist students from N.D. going into the United Methodist ministry. The family requests that memorials be sent to: Dakotas UM Foundation, Cushing Scholarship Fund, P0 Box 460, Mitchell, S.D. 57301.
A memorial service for Rev. Cushing was held Saturday, August 23, 2003 at the Edgewood United Methodist Church, 300 Elm Street, Fargo.
Lester M. Arne
Funeral services for Lester M. Arne, 65, Park Rapids, Minn., formerly Akeley, Minn. and Tracy, Minn., were held on Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at the Heritage Living Center Chapel in Park Rapids. Father Dennis Wieland officiated. A second service was held Friday, September 12, 2003 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tracy, Minn. Mr. Arne died Monday, September 8, 2003 at the Heritage Living Center, Park Rapids.
Lester Marvin Arne, son of Norris and Theresa Arne was born on November 16, 1937 near Enderlin. As a small child, he moved with his family to a farm near Amiret, Minn. where Lester began his formal public education. In September of 1946, he moved with his family to Tracy, Minn., where he attended Tracy Public Schools. On January 4, 1955, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Frankfurt, Germany. Lester was honorably discharged from the military on December 19, 1956 and returned to Minnesota. In the early 60s he moved to Howard Lake near Akeley. He entered the Heritage Living Center, Park Rapids in 1994.
He is survived by his sister, Lillian (Henry) Zajic, Tyler, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Delores Baumberger and Mary Lou Luttmer; grandparents and several nieces and nephews.
Interment at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Tracy, Minn.

William J. Barr
Funeral services for William J. Barr, 72, Lisbon, were held on Monday, September 8, 2003 at First United Methodist Church, Lisbon. Reverend Beth Conrad and Reverend Rick Holmberg officiated. Mr. Barr died Friday, September 5, 2003 at Lisbon Area Health Services Hospital, Lisbon.
William J. Barr, son of Clarence and Emily (Martin) Barr was born on July 19, 1931 at rural Elliott, N.D. He attended school in rural Lisbon.
On December 1, 1956, he married
Isabel Shank in Lisbon. They lived near Lisbon where Bill farmed and trucked for Gwinner Creamery. In later years he was employed by Berube’s in Lisbon and Gwinner Propane. In 1997 they moved into Lisbon.
He is survived by his wife Isabel Barr, Lisbon; two sons, Willis (Juliet) Barr, Minot and Allen (Kristy) Barr, Minot; three daughters, Betty Braisted, Jamestown, Louise Keplin, Fargo, Miriam Barr, Tea, S.D.; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Clifford (Velma) Martin, Stirum, N.D., and Robert (Darlene Barr, Lisbon; three sisters, Mary (Marvin) Siedschlag, LaMoure, Helen (Russell) Elijah, Lisbon, Dorothy (Jack) Holt, Lisbon.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Gary Martin, Larry Martin, Laudie Barr, Scott Holt, Robert Elijah, and Tom Siedschlag.
Music was provided by organist Jan Hansen and soloist Joan Montgomery.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.

Anna M. Solhjem
Funeral services for Anna M. Solhjem, 96, Fargo, were held on Thursday, October 2, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Leonard. Mrs. Solhjem died Monday, September 29, 2003 at Bethany Homes, Fargo.
Anna Marie Liedahl, daughter of Nickolai and Johanna (Rye) Liedahl was born on June 25, 1907 in rural Leonard. She attended school in rural Leonard. She worked at the Powers Farm in rural Leonard.
On October 26, 1927, she married
Arthur Solhjem. They farmed near McLeod until 1956 when they moved to Fargo. Arthur died October 25, 1995.
She is survived by three daughters, Joyce (Herb) Papendick, Rapid City, S.D., Arlene Damon, Canistota, S.D., and Betty (Walter) Harlow, Perham, Minn.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Interment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Gene P. Young
Funeral services for Gene P. Young, 75, Edgeley, were held on Friday, October, 3, 2003 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Edgeley. Pastor Dale Emery officiated. Mr. Young died Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at Parkside Lutheran Home, Lisbon.
Gene Philip Young, son of Philip and Emily (Smith) Young was born on February 5, 1928 at Merricourt, N.D. He attended school in the Merricourt area and graduated from Kulm High School. After graduating, Gene began farming.
On October 21, 1949, he married
Corinne Stark, in Peace Lutheran Church, Merricourt. They settled on their farm near Edgeley. He continued to farm until his health declined. Gene was a Dickey County Commissioner for 16 years and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Edgeley.
He is survived by his wife, Corinne Young, Edgeley; daughter, Vickie Cook, Lisbon; son, Michael (Kathy) Young, Edgeley; one grandson; two step-grandsons; seven sisters, Carol Smith, Tampa, Fla, Norma (Arle) Schlecht, Hutchinson, Minn., Ramona (Burnie) Bomstad, Jamestown, Ruth (Dennis) Buchholz, Lisbon, Linda Kunerth, Ovieda, Fla., Joyce (Roger) Roepke, Cokato, Minn., and Sue (Bruce) Lindgren, Kulm. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Lois Hollan and two brothers, Don and Jim.
Interment at Mount Hope Cemetery, Edgeley.
