John D. Gilbert
Funeral services for John D. “Buzzy” Gilbert, 74, Lisbon, were held on Thursday, January 22, 2004 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Lisbon. Father Andrew Dudzinski officiated. Mr. Gilbert died Sunday, January 18, 2004 at MeritCare Hospital Fargo.
John D. Gilbert, son of Lyndon and Rose (Haecherl) Gilbert was born on May 6, 1929 in Lisbon. He attended school in rural Lisbon and St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Lisbon.
On November 25, 1950, he married Rosie M. Ries in Lisbon. They farmed near Lisbon.
He is survived by his wife, Rosie Gilbert, Lisbon; two sons, Greg (Joanne) Gilbert, Waubun, Minn. and Danny (Connie) Gilbert, Lisbon; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, James (Marthanna) Gilbert, Enderlin and one sister, Winnefred Vogel, Fargo.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Neil Gilbert, Paul Gilbert, Shane Gilbert, Jaime Thompson, Chad Gilbert, Scott Gilbert, Laura Mittet, and Beth Mittet.
Music was provided by organist Carol McCann and soloist Sylvia Holmstrom.
Interment at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Lisbon.
Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon, was in charge of arrangements.

Marvin F. Bartle
Funeral services for Marvin F. Bartle, 90, Enderlin, were held on Monday, January 19, 2004 at Anselm Lutheran Church, rural Enderlin. Reverend Mike Toomey officiated. Mr. Bartle died Friday, January 16, 2004 at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin.
Mavin F. Bartle, son of Benjamin and Ella (Hird) Bartle was born on January 15, 1914 in Dubuque, Iowa. He attended rural Edgeley School and Edgeley High School.
On June 19, 1949, he married Rose Johnson in Fort Ransom.
Mr. Bartle worked at Farmer’s Union Oil in Edgeley and then moved to Valley City where he worked at Farmer’s Union Oil. He returned to farm near Edgeley until his marriage to Rose. They farmed near Enderlin. Marvin was named Ransom County Man of the Year in 1991. He served as Casey Township treasurer for 18 years, served for many years on Farmers Credit Union Board and Oil Board. He served on Anselm Lutheran Church Council for several years. He was a leader of Liberty Livestock 4-H club.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Bartle, Enderlin; two sons, Steven (Roene) Bartle, Quincy, Ill. and Mark Bartle, Enderlin; one daughter, Kaylyn (Richard) Anderson, Litchville, N.D.; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Art (Adeline) Bartle, Billings, Mont., Bill (Carol) Bartle, Billings, Mont., Fred (Gert) Bartle, Edgeley, and Vernon (Fay) Bartle, Edgeley; and one sister, Ruby Bartle, Bismarck.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Vernon Bartle, Mike Bartle, Wayne Heinrich, Scott Johnson, Stuart Syverson, and Marlow Johnson.
Music was provided by organist Janet Froemke and soloist Paul Billing.
Interment at Enderlin Cemetery.

Kenneth L. Anderson
Funeral services for Kenneth L. Anderson, 82, Breckenridge, Minn., were held on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Breckenridge. Father Stan Wieser officiated. Mr. Anderson died Friday, January 16, 2004 at his home.
Kenneth L. Anderson, son of Andrew and Christina (Haugen) Anderson was born on December 1, 1921 in Hillsboro. He grew up on the family farm and attended school at Hillsboro. Following his formal education he continued working on the farm. On October 2, 1944, he married Margaret Mooney in Grand Forks. The couple lived in Grand Forks where Kenny worked at the potato warehouse. In March 1945 he entered the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Chincoteague, a supply ship, during WWII. He was discharged in April 1946 and returned to Hillsboro where he worked as a bartender, at a lumber yard and at a filling station. In 1950, the couple moved their family to Breckenridge where he worked at the lumber yard. Kenny began working for the Great Northern Railroad as a switchman in 1952. Following his retirement from the railroad in 1983, he continued working, mowing ditches for Wilkin County. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Breckenridge, and the VFW Club and Eagles Club #2749 in Wahpeton. He also belonged to the WWII Last Man’s Club and the local Railroad Retirement Group.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, Breckenridge; four sons, Donald J. (Fran) Anderson, Pelican Rapids, David (Judy) Anderson, Minneapolis, Charles (Shelly) Anderson, Bemidji, and Robert (Coleen) Anderson, Mayville; five daughters, Judy (Ray) Rieger, Motley, Minn., Ellen (John) Berg, Hankinson, Debby (Gerald) Berg, Lisbon, Sandy (Bernie) Boroski, Clarksville, Tenn., Mary (Allen) Haiby, Fergus Falls, Minn.; 21 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Dale Anderson and his parents.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Kevin Rieger, Jack Berg, Josh Berg, Leif Anderson, Ryan Anderson, Brian Boroski, Dale Anderson and Scott Anderson. Honorary pallbearers were Gerald Solien, Roger Solien, LeRoy Rieber, Joe Pulskamp, Larry Berg, Kenny Skoog, Don Kleingarn, Herman Heilman, Nels Thompson, Edwin Braun, Bernie Braun, Jerry Lunde, and all railroad retirees.
Military rites conducted by the Wilkin County Honor Guard.
Interment at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Breckenridge.
Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, was in charge of arrangements.

Siemen Goter
Funeral services for Siemen Goter, 72, Lisbon, formerly Carrington, were held on Thursday, January 22, 2004 at Grace Lutheran Church, Carrington. Pastor Richard Biberdorf officiated. Mr. Goter died Friday, January 16, 2004 at Lisbon Area Health Services.
Siemen Goter, son of Ernest and Elsie (Raimen) Goter was born on August 17, 1931 in Conklin Township, N.D. He attended school in Woodworth, N.D. graduating in 1949. Siemen worked on the family farm until 1957 when he entered the U.S. Army. He served from 1957 to 1959. After the service Siemen farmed with his dad near Woodworth until 1987. He drove truck from 1982 until he became ill in 1999. He was a member of VFW, American Legion and served on several township boards.
He is survived by two sons, Darin (Bev) Goter, Jamestown and Todd (Shelley) Goter, Jamestown; four grandchildren; two sisters, Diana Ball, Llano, Texas and Erma Lindvall, McVille, N.D. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Esther, Luella, Erlina and one brother, Walter.
Interment at Gem Cemetery, Woodworth.

Marjorie L. Westrick
Funeral services for Marjorie L. Westrick, 80, Fargo, were held on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at First Lutheran Chapel, Fargo. Mrs. Westrick died Thursday, January 15, 2004 at Bethany Homes, Fargo.
Marjorie LaVerne Westrick, daughter of Fred and Julie (Josal) Kortie was born on October 22, 1923 in Verona. She attended school in Verona. She graduated from Cleveland Consolidated High School.
In 1943, she married Eugene Splitt at LaMoure. They moved to Seattle for four years and then moved to Fargo. She married Ervin Westrick in 1959 in Fargo. She was a bartender at the Bismarck Tavern from 1948 to 1987 when she retired.
She is survived by her son, Gerald (Sandra) Splitt, Fargo; three step-sons, Steve (Kathy) Westrick, Fargo, George Westrick, Sullivan, Mo., Douglas Westrick, Palmyra, Pa; one brother, Donald (Peggy) Kortie, Alexandria, Minn.; one sister, Virginia Anderson, Fargo; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Ervin, son James Splitt and a brother, Jack Kortie.
Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

Michelle Marie Walker
Michelle Marie (Schneider) Walker, age 34, Lisbon, N.D. passed away on Friday, January 16, 2004 in Brandon, S.D. following a courageous 17 month battle with brain cancer. Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem.
She was born August 22, 1969 in Mitchell, S.D. to Ray and Carole Schneider, Spencer, S.D. After graduating from Hanson High school in 1987, she attended Dakota State University in Madison and Mitchell Area Vocational Technical Institute.
She was united in marriage to Patrick Tracy Walker in Sioux Falls on November 19, 1994. Following their marriage they lived and worked in Sioux Falls, moving soon to Crooks. Michelle worked at Sioux Valley Children's Specialty Clinic, and then left that position to start a daycare and raise her young children. In April 2002 they moved to Lisbon, ND which remained their residence until her death.
She was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor on September 6, 2002. Through several brain surgeries and two courses of intense medical therapy, she maintained her sense of humor and great zest for life and displayed incredible strength and courage. Through her treatments she spent time at the Hope Lodge and Gift of Life Transplant House in Rochester, Minn. There she met many wonderful friends. Through her journey, she was grateful for all of her family, friends, medical professional and spiritual leaders who, through God's goodness, gave her precious time to celebrate her life with us. Though she lost her battle, she remains in our thoughts and memories.
She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Lisbon and the Lisbon Jaycees. She enjoyed raising her children, Brendan, Keely, Alex and Jack and spending time with her husband, countless friends, and family. She was a school volunteer and avid cook and gardener. Those who knew and loved her admired her energy, determination, quickwit and willingness to help others.
She will be greatly missed by her surviving husband, Patrick, Lisbon, N.D.; four children, Brendan 8, Keely 5, Alexander 3, and Jackson 1, all of Lisbon; stepchildren, Erika (Brandon) Yoney, Briana Walker of Moorhead, Minn. and step-grandchild, Annika; her parents, Raymond and Carole Schneider, Spencer, S.D.; two sisters, Monica (Galynn) Huber, Brandon, S.D., Mary Schneider (Amir Andrawis), Sioux City, Iowa; five brothers, Ray "Chuck" (Janet) Schneider, Longview, Texas, Dan (Donna) Schneider, Sioux Falls, Tom (Susie) Schneider Bakersfield, Calif., Paul (Michelle) Schneider, White Bear Lake, Minn. and Richard (Sheri) Schneider, Hayti, S.D.; nieces and nephews, Kevin and Jason Schneider, Christina and Ashley Huber, April and Aaron Schneider, Nicole Schneider, and Philip, Danielle and Melanie Schneider. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, an aunt, uncle, niece and nephew.
A memorial service will be held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Lisbon at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Michelle Walker Fund at Home Federal Bank in Crooks, S.D.

Mildred O. Johnson
Funeral services for Mildred O. Johnson, 90, Lisbon, were held on Tuesday, January 27 at Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon. Gilbert Richter and Phylis Williams officiated. Mrs. Johnson died Saturday, January 24, 2004 at Parkside Home, Lisbon.
Mildred O. Christianson, daughter of Oscar and Mathilda (Anderson) Christianson was born on July 19, 1913 in rural Englevale. She attended rural Fort Ransom School and Fort Ransom high School.
On May 30, 1939, she married Harold N. Johnson in Fort Ransom. Mildred worked at the N.D. Veterans Home in Lisbon for several years. They farmed in Springer Township near Lisbon. She moved into Lisbon in 1970. She worked as a homemaker for Social Services. He died in 1958.
She is survived by two sons, Duane (Linda) Johnson, Lisbon, Harvey (Lucy) Johnson, Thousand Oakes, Calif.; two daughters, Doris (Gary) Raab, Seattle, Wash., Sharon (Charles) Hager, Ventura, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer (Ginny) Christianson, Marian, N.Y., Vernal Christianson, Rochester, N.Y.; two sisters, Mabel Thompson, Fingal, and Deloris (Marvin) Mund, Milnor. She was preceeded in death by her husband, three brothers, Edwin, Arthur and Ernest; and one sister, Ingrid Hoff.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Howard Hoff, Jon Mund, Darin Johnson, Kenneth Coleman, Orville Suhumskie, Charles Hager, and Gary Raab.
Music was provided by organist Charlene Myers and vocalists Jeff and Lynnette Walker.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.
Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon, was in charge of arrangements.
