Elaine V. Shelver
Funeral services for Elaine V. Shelver, 74, Enderlin, were held on Monday, February 9, 2004 at First Lutheran Church, Enderlin. Leon Zavadil officiated. Mrs. Shelver died Thursday, February 5, 2004 at Lisbon Area Health Services.
Elaine V. Jones, daughter of Charles and Velma (Bleese) Jones was born on September 21, 1929 in Alice, N.D. She attended Alice School. In 1936 Elaine's’ family moved to Garrison, Minn., where she attended school until 1941 when they moved to Eatonville, Wash. where she attended school.
On October 15, 1949, she married Milton V. Shelver, in Sheldon. They farmed near Enderlin until 1955 when they moved to Great Falls, Mont. for a short time. They returned to the Enderlin area. Elaine was a member of Royal Neighbors, Kitchenaires and Farmers Union.
She is survived by her husband Milton, Enderlin; two sons, Lynn (Robin) Shelver, Enderlin, Louis (Automne) Shelver, Enderlin; one daughter, Sheila (Roger) Schanz, Langdon, N.D.; four grandchildren; one brother, Alvin Jones, Eatonville, Wash.; and one sister, Lorna Paget, Puyallup, Wash.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Tim Meyer, Ron Carlson, David Shelver, Randy Podvin, Reed Podvin, and Ross Podvin.
Music was provided by organist Genell Carlson and soloists Burnell and Owen Trangsrud.
Interment at West St. Olaf Cemetery, rural Enderlin.
Armstrong Funeral Home, Enderlin, was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. William R. Harris
Funeral services for Reverend William R. Harris, 72, Mentor, Minn., were held on Monday, February 9, 2004 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Grand Forks. Rev. Harris died Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at his home in the care of Riverview Hospice.
William Russell Harris, son of Arthur and Gertrude Harris was born on February 5, 1931 in Aberdeen S.D. Russ grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota living most of his childhood years at Fort Mead in Sturgis. He joined the South Dakota National Guard while still in high school and upon completion of his secondary education he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in the rebuilding of Germany following World War II. He was honorable discharged September 1953.
He completed a BA degree at Vennard College, Oskaloosa, Iowa; did graduate work at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa; and achieved a Master’s of Divinity from Garrett Theological Seminary, Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He was ordained a deacon of the United Methodist Church in 1964 and an elder in 1966. He was a member of The Dakotas Conference serving United Methodist Churches in Enderlin, Sheldon, Leonard, Fargo and Grand Forks, Chestnut, Ill. and Clinton, N.Y. In 1977 he was appointed to service on The General Board of Global Ministry (UMC) in New York City where for ten years he carried responsibility for new church development in United Methodist Churches in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. He continued to serve as a consultant in new church development and redevelopment to The Dakotas Conference until January, 2004.
On June 3, 1955, he married Josephine “Jo” Rae Goold. They retired to their home on Maple Lake in 1996 and soon became a ministry team at The First Presbyterian Church in Red Lake Falls, Minn.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Goold; one daughter, the Rev. Linda (Bill Kampmeyer) Harris, St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, Steven Russell (Vicki) Harris and Ronald Wayne (Gail) Harris, Brandon, S.D.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Dr. Merne (Sue) Harris, West Des Moines, Iowa; sisters-in-law Linda (Rev. James) Hulett, Mecosta, Mich.Alice (Rev. Timothy) Driskell, Huitt, Minn.; brothers-in-laws Dr. William (Thelma) Goold, Wilmore, Ky. and Dr. Stephen (Pamela) Goold, Maple Grove, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister.
Interment at LaPorte, Mich.
Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile, Minn., was in charge of arrangements.

Gilmore M. Hanson
Funeral services for Gilmore M. Hanson., 92, Enderlin, formerly Kathryn, N.D., were held on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Preston Lutheran Church, Fort Ransom. Reverend David Carlson officiated. Mr. Hanson died Saturday, March 6, 2004 at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin.
Gilmore M. Hanson, son of Gilbert and Paulina (Baarstad) Hanson was born on July 16, 1911 in rural Fort Ransom. He attended school in rural Fort Ransom.
On October 22, 1941, he married Olga Sperstad, in Nome, N.D. He farmed near Fort Ransom. Mr. Hanson served on the Green School Board, Preston Township Board and Preston Lutheran Church Board. He was a soloist for many weddings, anniversaries and funerals.
He is survived by his wife, Olga Hanson, Kathryn, N.D.
Pallbearers for the funeral were David Tingley, Darin Tingley, Daniel Baarstad, Sherman Sperstad, Kermit Sorby, and Merlin Fornes.
Music was provided by organist Iverne Birklid and soloist Kevin Bishop.
Interment at Preston Cemetery, rural Fort Ransom.

Muriel L. Sandhei
Funeral services for Muriel L. Sandhei, 82, Valley City, N.D., were held on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. Reverend Paul Huso and Reverend Mark Ostgarden officiated. Mrs. Sandhei died Saturday, March 6, 2004 at MeritCare Palliative Care Center, Fargo.
Muriel Louise Henrickson, daughter of Johannes and Josephine (Nelson) Henrickson was born on July 29, 1921 in Fort Ransom. She attended school in Fort Ransom and graduated from Fort Ransom High School.
She married Elmer Sandhei. She later married Chester Sandhei. He died July 19, 1994. Muriel spent over 20 years as a pastry cook at the Student Union at Valley City State University. She was active at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and the Eagles Club, both in Valley City.
She is survived by three daughters, Evelyn (Harvey) Dawson, Madison, Wis., Marjorie (Ben) Herr, Fargo, and Liz (Larry) Lamb, Lakeville, Minn.; one son, Tom (Linda) Sandhei, Delano, Minn., ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Andor “Pud” (Betty) Henrickson, Richfield, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husbands Elmer Sandhei and Chester Sandhei.
Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, was in charge of arrangements.

Lola M. Miller
Private family services and burial for Lola M. Miller, 87, Coram, Mont., were held in the Glacier Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Miller died March 1, 2004 at the Kalispell Regional Medical Center, Kalispell, Mont.
Lola Marie Johnson, daughter of Walter and Luella (Bock) Johnson was born on December 21, 1916 in Lisbon. She attended school in Lisbon. She moved to San Diego, Calif. during the war.
On June 17, 1944, she married Menno Miller. They moved several times and arrived in the Flathead Valley near Echo Lake in July 1955, where they farmed until 1974, when they moved to the Polson area. Menno passed away in 1994. Lola lived in Spokane, until 2000, when she moved back into the Kalispell area. She was active in the Lutheran Church in Bigfork and Polson.
She is survived by three daughters, Rochelle LaValley, Colville, Wash., Elaine Miller, Kalispell, and Dawn Collins, Coram; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Menno, daughter Kathryn Chapin, son, Robert, her parents, and two brothers, Robert Johnson and Harold Johnson both of Lisbon.
Johnson Mortuary and Crematory, Coram, Mont., was in charge of arrangements.

Harold P. Thrane
Funeral services for Harold Thrane, 83, Lisbon, were held on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Norman Lutheran church, rural Kindred, N.D. Mr. Thrane died Monday, March 8, 2004 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Harold Peter Thrane, son of Palmer and Gunda (Simmons) Thrane was born on February 24, 1921 at Kindred. He grew up on the family farm east of Kindred. He was a grain farmer and raised turkeys. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII. He served in the 14th Air Force Flying Tigers in China. He flew 35 missions and became an instructor. He returned to Kindred where he continued farming. In 2001. he moved into the Solders Home in Lisbon. He was President of Farmers Union Oil Company, Norman Township Supervisor for 26 years and past Commander of the Kindred American Legion Post.
He is survived by Leif (Margie) Thrane, San Juan, Texas; David (MaryAnn) Thrane, Fairview Park, Ohio, Gordon (Ornell) Thrane, Pequot Lake, Minn., Ralph (Loanne) Thrane, St. Paul, Minn., and Clifford Thrane, West Fargo. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Alfred.
Interment at Norman Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kindred.

Helen F. Nelson
Funeral services for Helen F. Nelson, 88, Mesa, Ariz., formerly Milnor, N.D., were held on Saturday, March 13, 2004 at St. Arnold’s Catholic Church, Milnor, N.D. Father Miller officiated. Mrs. Nelson died Sunday, March 7, 2004 at her home in Mesa.
Helen F. Finch, daughter of Archibald and Marie (Denning) Finch was born on October 2, 1915 at Cogswell, N.D. She grew up in Cogswell and graduated from Cogswell High School in 1933. She went on to start nursing school at St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.
On September 29, 1933, she married Elwood R. Nelson at Aberdeen. Following their marriage they lived in Gwinner, where she worked for the U.S. Postal Service and later became Post Master. They resided in Gwinner until 1944, at which time they moved to Breckenridge, Minn, where they lived for five years.
In June of 1948, Helen and Elwood opened a John Deere Implement business known as Nelson Implement in Milnor. In June of 1949, they added the Chevrolet franchise and together they ran Nelson Implement and Chevrolet in Milnor until selling the business in 1981. She also worked for the Postal Service in Milnor for many years having retired from that duty after serving 28 years. In 1981, after retiring they moved to a lake home on Ottertail Lake near Battle Lake, Minn. They have made their home in Mesa, Ariz., for the winter months since that time. Helen was a member of St. Arnold’s Catholic Church and St. Arnold’s
Altar Society. She served as a director of the North Dakota Health and Tuberculosis Association.
She is survived by her husband, Elwood Nelson, Milnor; one daughter, Joan (Bob) Tuma, Santa Barbara, Calif.; a son-in-law, Maynard Helgaas, Jamestown; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jean Helgaas, her parents and four brothers.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Bob Tuma, Robert Tuma, Maynard Helgaas, John Helgaas, David Strege and Ron Hotl. Honorary pallbearers are all family and friends.
Interment at a cemetery in Britton, S.D.

Kenneth J. Samuelson
Funeral services for Kenneth J. Samuelson, 88, were held on Monday, February 23, 2004 at Dalesburg Baptist Church, rural Beresford, California. Reverend Samuelson died February 1, 2004 at the Arcadia Methodist Hospital in California due to complications of Parkinson's disease.
Kenneth J. Samuelson, son of Eric and Goldie Samuelson, was born on November 9, 1915 in Chicago, Ill. Ken spent his early childhood in Chicago and his high school years in Long Lake, Ill. After graduating from Grant High School in Fox Lake, Ill in 1935, he pursued a career in the ministry. Ken graduated from the Salvation Army College for Officers Training in 1940 and received training at Grandview College and Trinity Bible College and Seminary. He also studied through the Moody Bible Institute and the University of North Dakota.
His ministry spanned service with the Salvation Army, the Evangelical Free church and the General Conference and American Baptist churches. Throughout his long career, Ken served churches in Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota, Indiana and North Dakota. He served the First Baptist Church in Lisbon from 1969 to 1975. At the beginning of his career he also served as a full-time evangelist. For two years he was Vice President and Song Leader for Youth for Christ in Duluth, Minn. For 18 years following his retirement in 1983, Ken participated in the Minister at Large program serving as interim pastor for many Baptist churches in many different cities and states around the country. In 2001, Ken received the Rosa O. Hall Award sponsored by the American Baptist Church; this lifetime achievement award was established to give recognition to an American Baptist pastor who has given distinguished service in town and country churches and who has demonstrated both effectiveness and faithfulness in the ministry.
During this retirement, Ken enjoyed playing the cornet and was the lead singer with numerous bands; he played with the Salvation Army Band, municipal bands and a small orchestra that shared music with people in assisted living and nursing home facilities.
He is survived by one daughter, Sheryl (Jeff) Wirt; three sons, Kenneth J. Samuelson, Jr., Timothy (Nancy) Samuelson and Mark Samuelson; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and one sister, Alyce (Ehlert) Wallin. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor Pearson Samuelson, and his parents.
