Gayle E. Phillips
Hastings resident Gayle E. Phillips, 60, of 2408 W. Sixth St., died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 10 am. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Beverly Minor officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
Mr. Phillips was born July 30, 1936, to Eugene Clay and Stella Ruth (Kinch) Phillips in Hastings. He attended Hastings Senior High School. On Oct. 4, 1959, he married Ramona Robinson. He was a truck driver for Red & White Transfer.
Survivors are his wife; three sons, Dale, Tim and Ken, all of Hastings; one daughter, Barb Warburton of Hastings; one brother, Stanley of Austin, Texas; three sisters, Marjorie Mooney of Richmond, Va., Janice McBride of Juniata and Ruthann Hamik of Chappell; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.
Clifford A. Souchek
Deweese resident Clifford Alton Souchek, 88, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.
Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield with the Rev. Edward Werner officiating. Visitation is Sunday through Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Funeral Home in Clay Center.
Mr. Souchek was born June 18, 1908, to John Frank and Minnie (Werner) Souchek in Fairfield. He graduated from Edgar High School in 1925. He attended Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln where he lettered two years in football. He played baseball in Hastings, Holdrege and with the Nebraska Independent League. He was employed with Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph and later served as a U.S. postal clerk. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1942 to November 1945. After the service, he returned as a railroad postal clerk in Omaha. He retired in 1965 and moved to Deweese.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Memorials may be given to the Church of Christ in Deweese.
Anita R. Nickman
Rural Kearney resident Anita R. Nickman, 22, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1997, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. Burial will be in Kearney Cemetery.
Survivors include her parents; two sisters; one brother; two grandmothers, including Gloria Kottwitz of Hastings; and a great-grandmother, Emma Kort of Hastings.
Menno J. Murman
Hastings resident Menno John Murman, 73, of 806 Madden Road died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church west of Glenvil with the Rev. Clinton L. McDonald officiating. Burial with military rites will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery. Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Murman was born June 12, 1923, to Wessel and Grace (Memmen) Murman in Glenvil. He graduated from Glenvil High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 20, 1945, to Dec. 11, 1946. On Jan. 5, 1947, he married Frances Larsen in Louisville. He was a dairy farmer near Glenvil.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church Council, Glenvil Board of Education, Mid-America Dairy, American Legion in Glenvil and Federal Land Bank. He was a Clay County Halter Holders 4-H leader and a lifetime member of the American Dairy Shrine. He received the Hastings Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1957; Federal Land Bank Golden Anniversary Medal in 1967; Nebraska Distinguished Dairyman in 1981 and many other dairy production awards.
Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Donna Meyer of Hastings; Dee Murman of Lincoln; and Peg Engberg of Glenvil; two sons, Dave and Jim, both of Glenvil; his mother; two brothers, Carl of Glenvil and Elmer of Hastings; three sisters, Hermina Stromer, Freida Ocker and Mary Harms, all of Glenvil; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Larry.
Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Villa Grace or the Alzheimer's Association.

Hastings resident Cecilia L. (Wieland) Gass, 93, of The Kensington died Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace.
Beulah Underwood
Doniphan resident Beulah M. (Golgert) Underwood, 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
Services were Friday at Doniphan United Methodist Church in Doniphan with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial was in Cedar View Cemetery at Doniphan. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home of Grand Island was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Underwood was born June 21, 1917, to William and Amelia (LaFever) Golgert in Juniata. She grew up on the family farm near Inland. She graduated from Inland High School in 1934. She lived in Doniphan. On June 3, 1942, she married Donald M. Underwood in Sundance, Wyo. They lived in Doniphan. They owned and operated the G & U Station. They retired in 1982. Her husband died in 1991. She continued to live in Doniphan.
She was an active member of Doniphan United Methodist Church and was a past member of Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors are one son, Clifford of Doniphan; two brothers, Wayne Golgert of Los Angeles and Alvin Golgert of Hordville; two sisters, LaVonne Terrel of Torrington, Wyo., and Laura Treat of Lincoln; and two stepgrandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a sister.
Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church.

Red Cloud resident Howard H. Berkemeyer, 90, died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, at Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.
Phyllis L. Evans
Former Clay Center resident Phyllis L. (Nye) Evans, 73, of Newberg, Ore., died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, at a Newberg hospital.
Services were Jan. 18 at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Norman Olson officiating. Private burial was in Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
Mrs. Evans was born March 25, 1923, to George and Vera (Herrick) Nye in Clay Center. She grew up and attended school in Clay Center. On Jan. 21, 1942, she married Doial Woolen in Mankato, Kan. They lived in Clay Center. In 1957 they moved to Portland, Ore. In 1981 they moved to Nut Tree Mobil Park in Newberg. Her husband died that same year. On Sept. 29, 1983, she married Aura C.R. "Ross" Evans in Newberg.
She attended Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg. She was a volunteer for the Host Reading Program in the public schools for more than 10 years. She received awards from Yambill County for her work. She was president of the Women's Club.
Survivors are her husband; four sons, Rodger Woolen, Jerry Woolen, Clay Woolen and Norman Woolen, all of Newberg; three brothers, Bill Nye of Omaha, Larry Nye of Dannebrog and Jim Nye of Lincoln; one sister, Carol Hayes of Clay Center; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be given to Newberg Fish Organization.
Roger M. Hogan
Heartwell resident Roger M. Hogan, 86, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, at the Kearney County Health Services Long Term Care Unit in Minden.
Melvin L. Smith
Hastings resident Melvin L. Smith, 71, died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, at his home.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barb Spangler officiating. Burial will be at Riverton Memorial Cemetery north of Riverton. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8-11 a.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith was born Dec. 3, 1925, to Carl and Martha (Blum) Smith in Hastings. He graduated from high school in Hastings. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-46, serving in Europe and the Pacific. He returned to Hastings where he worked for the Nash Finch Co. On Jan. 22, 1951, he married Lota L. Wright in Riverton. They lived in Hastings, except for 1956 when they lived in Holdrege and Gothenburg. He worked as a service technician for Don's TV and Appliance from 1956-78. He then worked for Dutton-Lainson Co. He retired in 1986. His wife died April 1, 1973. On March 11, 1989, he married Harriett L. Marsh. They lived in Hastings.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Chorus of the Plains and several bowling teams.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Scott of Hong Kong; one daughter, Jody Schakat of Hastings; three stepsons, Greg Marsh and Scott Marsh, both of Hastings, and Jeff Marsh of Omaha; one stepdaughter, Jill Konen of Lincoln; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to hospice, Grace United Methodist Church or Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Adam C. Jurgena
Adam Christian Jurgena, 21/2-month-old son of Mark Vetsch and Alyssa M. Jurgena of 735 E. Sixth St., died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ted Brust officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
Adam was born Nov. 15, 1996, in Hastings.
Survivors are his parents and brothers, Alexander Jurgena and Austin Jurgena; and grandparents, Steve and Lin Jurgena of Hastings and Bob and Sharon Bonwell of Federal Way, Wash.
Memorials may be given to the family.
Bernard Ben Kemper
Franklin resident Bernard "Ben" Kemper, 86, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Congregational United Church of Christ in Franklin with the Rev. Russell Malchow officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Franklin. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9-10 a.m. Thursday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin and 1 p.m. until services at the church.
Mr. Kemper was born July 20, 1910, to Frank and Mattie (Blake) Kemper on a farm south of Franklin. He grew up south of Franklin. He attended School District 62 and graduated from Franklin High School in 1930. On Nov. 18, 1933, he married Hilda M. Goedeken in Lincoln. In 1938 they moved to a farm north of Naponee. They moved to Franklin in 1946. He later worked on canal construction. He worked for S. E. Smith Lumber Co. in Franklin for 30 years.
He was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Bernard H. of Superior; two sisters, Margaret Garthe of Ocala, Fla., and Josephine Creighton of Leesburg, Fla.; one brother, K.W. Kemper of Flagstaff, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
