Dana Moss
Former Edgar resident Dana (Schlichtman) Moss, 34, of Grand Island died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, at her home.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Urbauer-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Edgar with the Rev. Al Parr officiating. Burial will be in Edgar Cemetery.
Mrs. Moss was born July 19, 1962, to Bill and Maxine (Overturf) Schlichtman in Hastings. She attended grade school in Edgar and graduated from Villa Maria school in Waverly in 1981. On July 20, 1985, she married Jon Moss in Edgar. They lived in Grand Island.
She was a member of Evangelical Free Church of Grand Island and its women's bible study group. She was an active member of the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and a volunteer for the Grand Island shelter program for people who lose their homes and belongings in fires.
Survivors are her husband and son, James Robert; her father and stepmother, Bill and Peg Schlichtman of Edgar; two brothers, Larry Schlichtman of Hastings and Rob Schlichtman of Edgar; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother and grandparents.
Evelyn L. Snyder
Hastings resident Evelyn Lucinda (Mumma) Snyder, 74, of 1118 Jefferson Ave. died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Joe Scahill and the Rev. Fred Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church. Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Snyder was born April 22, 1922, to Ralph and Esther (Althouse) Mumma in Nelson. She graduated from Nelson High School. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1946. On Dec. 27, 1946, she married Ray A. Snyder. She was a home economics and science teacher. In 1957 she moved to Hastings from Gering. She taught at the Hastings Junior High School for 12 years retiring in 1978.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Association of American University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, YWCA, United Methodist Women, Adams County Home Economics Association, Retired Teachers Association, Adams County Genealogical Society and Golden K Kiwanis Club. She was an honorary member of Future Homemakers of America and a life member of Parent Teacher Association.
Survivors are her husband; one son, Fred J of Lincoln; three brothers, Merle Mumma of Loranger, La., Ray Mumma of Port Hueneme, Calif., and Charles Mumma of Grand Island; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.
Vearl D. Frickey
Doniphan resident Vearl D. Frickey, 67, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services were to be at 10:30 a.m. today at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home chapel in Grand Island with the Rev. Joel Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in Cedar View Cemetery at Doniphan. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Frickey was born Feb. 13, 1929, to Eckhardt and Caroline (Augustin) Frickey on a farm near Juniata. He attended school at Christ Lutheran School near Prosser and graduated from Kenesaw High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was discharged in 1952. On Feb. 17, 1956, he married Myrna Stevenson in Hastings. They lived in rural Prosser for 10 years before moving to Doniphan. He worked for Missouri Valley Construction Co. for many years. He later farmed in the Prosser and Doniphan area. He also raised livestock.
He was a member of American Legion in Doniphan and the VFW of Grand Island.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, LouEtta Frickey of Lincoln; one son, Joel of Kearney; two brothers, Walter of Hastings and Vern of Grand Island; three sisters, Dora Nixon of Columbus, Elaine Bragg of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ruth Hadenfeldt of Hastings; and five grandchildren.
Milo 'Mike' Hayek
Hastings resident Milo "Mike" Hayek, 66, of 1834 Bateman St. died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ted Uhlig officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and until services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Hayek was born Feb. 27, 1930, to Frank and Rose (Plihal) Hayek in Wilber. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1947-49. On July 19, 1951, he married Elizabeth DuBose. He worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot from 1951-66 and Cornhusker Ordinance Plant in Grand Island from 1966-69. He drove for the Adams County ambulance service from 1969-71 and was chief of police for Veterans Administration Medical Center in Grand Island from 1971-86. He then was transportation officer for the Adams County Sheriffs office. He was in federal civil service for 33 years.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Grand Island Legion Club. He was a life member of the VFW and DAV.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Mike of Lincoln and Pat of Hastings; one sister, Darlene Gibson of Hastings; one brother, Irvin of Lexington, Ky.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister.
A memorial will be established.
Ruth R. Thomas
Red Cloud resident Ruth R. (Weskamp) Thomas, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with Bill Fogg officiating. Burial will be in Naponee Cemetery at Naponee.
Mrs. Thomas was born Sept. 29, 1908, to Adolph and Minnie (Seeman) Weskamp in Dansbury. She attended rural school near Dansbury. On Jan. 24, 1931, she married Clarence William Thomas in Phillipsburg, Kan. They farmed in the Dansbury area. In 1933 they moved to a farm near Womer, Kan., in 1935 to a farm south of Smith Center, Kan., and in 1947 to Naponee. Her husband died June 30, 1975. In 1985 she moved to Red Cloud from Franklin.
Survivors are two daughters, Grace M. Dierking of Red Cloud and Bonnie Keeten of Kenesaw; four sons, Cecil of Agra, Kan., LeRoy of Red Cloud, Ernest of Brighton, Colo., and Seth of Naponee; four sisters, Helen Goodwin of Wichita, Kan., Evelyn Ljungvall of Golden, Colo., Lousie Rozman of Largo, Fla., and AnnaBelle Welp of McCook; three brothers, Clarence Weskamp of Sterling, Colo., Andrew Weskamp of Denver and Eli Weskamp of Burbank, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers and one great-grandchild.
A memorial fund has been established by the family.
Mabel Beck
Minden resident Mabel Beck, 95, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, at Bethany Home in Minden.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Minden with the Rev. Dale Coakley officiating. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Beck was born Sept. 25, 1901, to Hans and Bergete (Kaldal) Rasmussen in Minden. She grew up in the Minden area and attended Minden High School. On March 8, 1920, she married Harry Beck. They farmed east of Minden. In 1968 they retired and moved into Minden. Her husband died in 1975.
She was an active member of First Christian Church since 1940. She was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship and other church groups.
Survivors are five sons, Archie, Richard and Don, all of Minden, Marshall of Lexington and Hilly of Springfield, Mo.; one sister, Ruth Petersen of Cozad; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters and one great-grandchild.
Marcia Mandin
Former Smith County, Kan., resident Marcia (Dahl) Mandin, 56, of Axtell died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, at the Rush Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Axtell with the Rev. H. Edlin Wells officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Axtell. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Freeland-Layton Funeral Home in Axtell.
Mrs. Mandin was born Dec. 22, 1940, to Edwin and Julia (Stolting) Dahl in Smith County, Kan. She grew up in the Axtell area and graduated from Axtell High School in 1959. She attended the Mary Lanning School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse for 35 years, the last 15 of which were at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. In 1996 she moved to Chicago for medical attention.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Axtell.
Survivors are two daughters, Jean Mandin of Omaha and Julie Carskadon of Wuerzburg, Germany; and one brother, Carl Dahl of Lincoln.
She is preceded in death by her parents.

Former Hastings resident Elizabeth C. (Flammang) Hoffman, 83, of Atco, N.J., died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, at Harvest Village Health Care Center in Atco.
Albert O. Nuss
Sutton resident Albert O. Nuss, 84, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton.
Services were to be today at Kohler Mortuary chapel in Sutton with the Free German Reformed Salem Church elders officiating. Burial was planned in the Free German Reformed Salem Church Cemetery near Sutton.
Mr. Nuss was born Nov. 16, 1912, to William and Margaret (Gemar) Nuss on a farm in Clay County near Sutton. He attended rural school and graduated from Sutton High School in 1931. On Aug. 10, 1937, he married Lisetta Griess in York. He was a sales clerk at Montgomery Ward in York. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He returned to work at Montgomery Ward. He later transferred to Yankton, S.D.; Marshalltown, Iowa; Osceola, Iowa; and then to Columbus. In 1975 he retired and returned to Sutton.
He was a member of Free German Reformed Salem Church.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Janice Zimlich of Sutton; one sister, Freida Nuss of Menno, S.D.; one brother, Carl of Sutton; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family.
Carolyn Thompson
Upland resident Carolyn (Morrow) Thompson, 55, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Bill Jardine officiating. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Thompson was born Dec. 8, 1941, to Floyd and Marge (Dalton) Morrow in Central City. She moved to Minden with her family in 1947. She graduated from Minden High School in 1960. On Dec. 31, 1961, she married Gene Thompson. They lived in the Minden and Upland area. They moved to Upland five years ago.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Minden and its women's group and Upland Extension Club.
Survivors are her husband; three sons, Charles of Minden and David and Jeffrey, both of Grand Island; her mother of Minden; one brother, Gary Morrow of Cozad; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Edmund P. Griess
Sutton resident Edmund P. Griess, 86, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Mr. Griess was born Aug. 30, 1910, to Peter J. and Christina (Griess) Griess in Fillmore County near Sutton. He attended rural school. On Jan. 24, 1934, he married Bernice Griess in Aurora. They farmed northeast of Sutton. In 1979 he retired and moved into Sutton. His wife died March 21, 1995.
He was a member of Free German Reformed Salem Church.
Survivors are two sons, Leroy and Ardell, both of Sutton; one sister, Esther Griess of Sutton; one brother, Benjamin Griess of Sutton; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He also was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.

Herman J.L. Hespen
Nelson resident Herman J.L. Hespen, 97, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, in Nelson.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Price Funeral Home in Hebron with the Rev. Leslie Warner officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Hebron. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today, 1-8 p.m. Tuesday and 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Hespen was born May 15, 1899, to Lammert John and Lisetta Hespen in rural Deshler. He also lived in Hebron and Nora. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosaline J.
Survivors are one son, Raymond J. of Custer, S.D.; seven daughters, Velma Fintel of Sutton, Lovetta Weiss and Ruth Gray, both of Lincoln, Wauhnetta Gebers of Superior, Darlene Wiger of Moorhead, Minn., Rachel Skeahan of Bella Vista, Ark., and Loxie Ehlers of Hebron; 23 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

Dorothy Marsh
Hastings resident Dorothy (Whitcomb) Marsh, 84, of Good Samaritan Village died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Tom Osborne officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Marsh was born Oct. 23, 1912, to Charles and Dora Mae (Bell) Whitcomb in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1931. She worked for Stein Brothers Co. On Oct. 29, 1933, she married Robert J. Marsh. He died in June 1982. She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Hastings.
She was a member of First Christian Church, China Belles and Foster Grandparent Program. She was involved in the Girl Scouts.
Survivors are five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Rae Sundling; two brothers and 10 sisters.
Memorials may be given to First Christian Church or Foster Grandparents.

Bertha M. Vance
Bladen resident Bertha Marie Vance, 82, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Bladen United Methodist Church with the Rev. Baldeo Singh officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery at Bladen. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Vance was born March 8, 1914, to Robert E. and Bertha (Nelson) James in Webster County. She graduated from Bladen High School in 1933. She taught in two rural schools in Webster County. On May 25, 1937, she married Raleigh Vance in Mankato, Kan. They farmed and ranched in the Bladen and Inavale areas. In 1972 they moved into Bladen. Her husband died May 12, 1991.
She was a member of Bladen United Methodist Church, Bladen United Methodist Women, Harmony Friendship Club and was active in the Bladen Senior Citizen's group.
Survivors are two sons, Larry of Inavale and Lonnie of Troy, Mich.; two brothers, Clyde James and Howard James, both of Bladen; one sister, Stella Irene Davis of Lincoln; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Judith Schollmeyer.
Richard 'Dick' Bronson
Richard D. "Dick" Bronson, 65, of Grand Island died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997, at his home.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. Julie Bringelson officiating. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Friday at Ridge Cemetery at Fremont. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m.
Mr. Bronson was born Feb. 12, 1931, to Leonard G. and Stella Mae (Forde) Bronson in Fremont. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War serving from 1950-54. On Feb. 11, 1951, he married Marlene Parrott. After his discharge from the Navy they lived in Norfolk, Va. He joined the Nebraska State Patrol. In 1955 they moved to Hastings. They moved to Grand Island in 1977. His wife died in January 1983. In April 1985 he married Barbara Rynearson in Denver. They were married until 1989.
He was a master mason at Hastings Lodge No. 50 and was a member of American Legion, Eagles, Police Officers Association of Nebraska and American Association of Retired Persons.
Survivors are three sons, Michael of Eatonville, Wash., and Kenneth and Jeremy, both of Denver; four daughters, Candice Adams of St. Paul, Jacqulyn King of Chandler, Ariz., Katherine Joyce of Fort Collins, Colo., and Cheryl Bronson of Concord, Calif.; one sister, Joyce Anderson of Fremont; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by an infant son, Dale; one brother and two sisters.
Memorials may be given to the Wishing Well Fund through the Nebraska State Troopers Association.
Ruth C. Rhoades
Hastings resident Ruth C. (Carlson) Rhoades, 89, of 1110 University St. died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997, at her home.
Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Parkview Cemetery with the Rev. Allen J. Boeve officiating. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Rhoades was born June 23, 1907, to Arthur and Grace Carlson in Kansas. She married Frank J. Rhoades. He died July 7, 1972. She was a homemaker.
She was survived by a brother, Byron Carlson.
