Bill L. Schwenke
Minden resident Bill L. Schwenke, 67, died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, at his home.
Rosary is 7 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Minden with the Rev. James O'Connor officiating. His remains were cremated. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery with military rites provided by American Legion Post No. 94 of Minden.
Mr. Schwenke was born May 1, 1929, to William "Bud" and Ellen (McMahon) Schwenke in Minden. He grew up in the Minden area. He attended country school through the eighth grade. He graduated from Minden High School in 1946. He attended the University of Nebraska. In 1950 he married Dionee Brown. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951-53 in Germany. After his discharge he returned to Minden and farmed. In 1961 he and his wife moved to Loomis. He was a life insurance agent for Banker's Life. They returned to Minden in 1963. He continued to sell insurance and also sold real estate. In 1996 he semi-retired after selling the Marlatt-Schwenke Agency.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and American Legion Post No. 94, of which he was past commander. He was chairman of the Kearney County Zoning Board.
Survivors are his wife; three sons, Michael of Minden, Matthew of Lincoln and Mitchell of Cape Coral, Fla.; one daughter, Sally Wilcox of Doniphan; two brothers, Jack of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Gene of Lincoln; one sister, Joan Frecks of Minden; and five grandchildren.
Nellie M. Gentert
Hastings resident Nellie M. (Clinger) Jungert Gentert, 86, died Thursday, April 10, 1997, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at GSV All Saints Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Joe Scahill officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 8-11 a.m. Monday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gentert was born Oct. 25, 1910, to Fred and Kate (Drowns) Clinger in Heartwell. On Oct. 16, 1929, she married Otto Jungert. He died in 1964. In 1971 she married Donald Gentert. He died July 7, 1992. She owned Nellie's Ceramics for many years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a past member of the Eagles Auxiliary.
Survivors are one daughter, Carol Houlden of Hemet, Calif.; one son, Leland Jungert of Hastings; three stepdaughters; two sisters, Esther Salisbury of Hemet and LaBelle Rodrigas of Riverside, Calif.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family.
Hilda Joyce
Former Clay County resident Hilda (Pope) Joyce, 87, of Aurora died Thursday, April 10, 1997, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Rosary is 8 p.m. today at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aurora. Burial will be in Aurora Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Joyce was born July 1, 1909, to Adam and Minnie (Sterkel) Pope in Sutton. She grew up in Sutton and attended school there. On Dec. 2, 1933, she married Martin Joyce in Harvard. They farmed in Clay County and the Giltner area. In 1984 they retired and moved to Aurora. Her husband died Dec. 26, 1987.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She was the Giltner correspondent for the Aurora News-Register for many years.
Survivors are one son, Gary of Aurora; four daughters, Marilyn Adam of Ravenna, Bonita Wendt of Giltner, Rose Marie Warren of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Margaret Schneider of Aurora; one brother, Raymond Pope of Hastings; one sister, Josephine Yost of Hastings; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one brother and one grandchild.
Maxine M. Fritz
Grand Island resident Maxine M. Fritz, 78, died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center Skilled Care Unit in Grand Island.
Services were to be at 2:30 p.m. today at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. Entombment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Fritz studied music at Hastings College.
Survivors are her husband; three daughters, including Terry Poppe of Juniata; one son, Brian of Hastings; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Vivian M. Bourlier
Hastings resident Vivian M. Bourlier, 70, died Thursday, April 10, 1997, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bourlier was born July 11, 1926, in Mason City. She married Harley W. Bourlier. They owned and operated Harley's Cafe in Hastings for 25 years. Her husband preceded her in death. She moved to Hastings 54 years ago.
Survivors are one daughter, Kay Gilliland of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Jack R. Schultz of Lakewood, Colo.; and one grandchild.
Arden 'Cotton' Clegg
Mankato, Kan., resident Arden B. "Cotton" Clegg, 81, died Friday, April 11, 1997, in Mankato.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Melby Mortuary chapel in Mankato with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Mankato with military rites provided by VFW Post No. 7830 of Mankato. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Clegg was born Oct. 23, 1915, to Chester T. and Viola Irene (Stedman) Clegg in Ionia, Kan.
Survivors are one son, Ronald W. of Mankato; one daughter, Donna J. King of Manhattan, Kan.; three sisters, Vivian Reed of Burr Oak, Kan., Joan Lammon of Englewood, Colo., and Sharon Hunter of Denver; and four brothers, Robert of Abilene, Kan., Bryant of Fremont, Max of Winona, Minn., and Ronald of Beloit, Kan.
Memorials may be given to Mankato Summer Youth Program.
Virginia 'Ginger' McCoy
Hastings resident Virginia "Ginger" Stark (Stone) McCoy, 80, of Good Samaritan Village Goldbeck Towers died Friday, April 11, 1997, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Salvation Army with the Rev. Ted Brust officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel.
Mrs. McCoy was born May 2, 1916, to Arch and Clara (Robare) Stone in Hastings. She married Fred Stark in 1936. He died in October 1965. In 1967 she married William McCoy. He died in January 1996. She worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot during World War II.
She was a member of North Shore Assembly of God Church.
Survivors are one daughter, Patricia Witrhlik of Hastings; four sons, Gary Stark of Ramona, Calif., Mickey Stark of Loveland, Colo., Lonnie Stark of Emmett, Idaho, and Dennie Stark of Yankton, S.D.; two stepdaughters, Jolene Rutt and Glenda Thaut, both of Hastings; five stepsons, William McCoy of Bay City, Mich., and Ronald McCoy, Richard McCoy, Jerry McCoy and Randy McCoy, all of Hastings; her stepfather, Guy Stone of Mitchell; one sister, Charlene Rohrick of Fort Collins, Colo.; two brothers, Burdette Stone of Grand Junction, Colo., and Jack Stone of Las Vegas, Nev.; 15 grandchildren; 18 stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 18 stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by an infant son, one grandchild and one infant great-grandchild.

Myrl F. Grabill
Hastings resident Myrl F. (Bohannon) Grabill, 83, of 2709 W. Third St. died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Robert Dana officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8-11 a.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Grabill was born Dec. 8, 1913, to Cecil and Maggie (Post) Bohannon in King City, Mo. On Feb. 10, 1935, she married Lester Grabill. They owned and operated Economy Cleaners from World War II until they retired in 1979.
She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and YWCA.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Cheryl Jones of Grapevine, Texas; one sister, Mildred Foster of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, George Bohannon of Arlington, Wash.; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Mervin W. Hultine
Rural Clay Center resident Mervin W. Hultine, 84, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Sutton with the Rev. Arthur H. Schmitt officiating. Burial will be in Clay Center Cemetery at Clay Center. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Kohler Mortuary in Sutton.
Mr. Hultine was born Nov. 28, 1912, to Per Edward and Hilma (Samuelson) Hultine on a farm near Harvard. He grew up in the Clay Center area. He graduated from Clay Center High School. On March 17, 1936, he married Ruth Hartzell in Hastings. They farmed in the Clay Center area.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Sutton and was a past member of both the co-op and school boards in Clay Center.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Nancy Krieser of Boulder, Colo.; two sons, Don of Harvard and Dick of Temple City, Calif.; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers.
Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church or American Cancer Society.
Sharon R. Burge
Former Blue Hill resident Sharon Rae (Rogers) Burge, 62, of Cardington, Ohio, died Thursday, April 3, 1997, at her home.
Graveside services were April 5 at Glendale Cemetery at Cardington with the Rev. William Buell officiating. Gompf Funeral Service of Cardington was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Burge was born Jan. 13, 1935, to Stanley and Marie (Jones) Rogers in Great Bend, Kan. On April 13, 1951, she married Ronald Burge in Ayr. They lived in Blue Hill before moving to Ohio.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Rona Young of Mount Gilead, Ohio; four sons, Mark of Cardington, Rory of Moundridge, Kan., Jeffrey of Marysville, Ohio, and Scott of Flat Gap, Ky.; two sisters, Lou Girard of Stafford, Kan., and Norma Smith of Lamar, Colo.; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, Robert Griffith; two sisters and three stepsisters.
Evelyn R. George
Hastings resident Evelyn R. (Martin) George, 80, of 1410 E. South St. died Monday, April 14, 1997, at her home.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery at Ayr.
Mrs. George was born Feb. 5, 1917, to Samuel and Hilda (Johnson) Martin in Ayr. She married Harvey George. He preceded her in death.
Survivors are three daughters, LaVila Brannagan of Doniphan, Sharon Wert of Aurora and Janice Sodomka of Savannah, Mo.; three sons, LaMoine Hammer of Mount Vernon, Ill., Roland Hammer of Grand Island and Richard George of Auburn; one sister, Agnes Carter of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers.
Memorials may be given to Golden Age Center.
Sherry Hartman
Hastings resident Sherry (Tjaden) Hartman, 54, of 4275 S. Wabash Ave. died Sunday, April 13, 1997, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Robert Dana officiating. Burial will be private for the family. There will be no visitation or viewing.
Mrs. Hartman was born Nov. 17, 1942, to Fred J.C. and Louise A. (Prawl) Tjaden in Adams County. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1960. On May 29, 1966, she married Marlin W. Hartman. She was a typesetter at the Hastings Tribune. She retired due to ill health.
She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and was a past member of Sweet Adelines. She was an organ and piano teacher.
She is survived by her husband.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Shelley Ann; and an infant brother.
Memorials may be given to Renal-Dialysis Department of St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island or the donor's choice.
Verna Sanderson
Aurora resident Verna Sanderson, 92, died Monday, April 14, 1997, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary chapel in Aurora. Burial will be in Mamre Church Cemetery northeast of Marquette. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Survivors are one son, Carl Jr. of Hastings; two daughters; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Irene A. Lutkemeier
Kenesaw resident Irene A. (Reiss) Lutkemeier, 95, died Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at Haven Home in Kenesaw.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Campbell Presbyterian Church in Campbell. Burial will be in Campbell Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation is from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings and 10 a.m. until services Friday at the church.
Mrs. Lutkemeier was born Nov. 12, 1901, to Otto and Elizabeth (Schramm) Reiss in Kingfisher, Okla. She moved to the Tribland area in 1919. On Aug. 17, 1922, she married William Lutkemeier. He died Dec. 27, 1982.
She was a member of Campbell Presbyterian Church.
Survivors are two daughters, Ellen Blank of Franklin and Loletta Tidemanson of Whittier, Calif.; one son, Harold of Mission, Texas; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by four brothers and seven sisters.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Campbell Presbyterian Church.
Jeanette Sieckmann
Former Hastings resident Jeanette I. (Scott) Hofeldt Sieckmann, 83, of Northglenn, Colo., died Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at North Suburban Medical Center in Thornton, Colo.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Joel Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Grand Island. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m.
Mrs. Sieckmann was born Aug. 26, 1913, to William and Phebe (Burmaster) Scott in Bloomington, Ill. She was raised on a farm in Iowa. In 1923 she moved with her family to Mackinaw, Ill. They later moved to a dairy farm near Council Bluffs, Iowa. After attending school in Omaha, she worked on the farm. In 1932 she married Howard Hofeldt in Clarion, Iowa. They lived on a farm in Iowa. In 1951 they moved to Grand Island. In 1952 she began working as a cook in Walnut Junior High. From 1962-77 she was a baker at Nebraska Veteran's Home. Her husband died Aug. 24, 1977. On April 9, 1983, she married Jess Sieckmann in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island. In 1995 they moved to Hastings. In December 1996 they moved to Northglenn.
She was a past member of Messiah Lutheran and St. Pauls Lutheran churches.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Deanna Miller of Northglenn; one son, Ronald Hofeldt of Hastings; one sister, Mildred Quintus of Eagle Grove, Iowa; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth; three sisters and three brothers.
Robert 'Pete' Tinlin
Hastings resident Robert Scott "Pete" Tinlin, 57, of 746 N. Minnestoa Ave. died Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg with the Rev. Karen Kaye officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with military rites provided by Gothenburg firing squad. Visitation is 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Tinlin was born Aug. 23, 1939, to Daniel Scott and Ingrid (Townsend) Tinlin in Chicago. He graduated from Burbank High School in San Antonio, Texas, in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army in Cambodia. In 1967 he moved to Gothenburg. On Jan. 22, 1983, he married Donna (Defruiter) Engberg in Lexington. They moved to Hastings in 1988.
Survivors are his wife; seven daughters, Betty Engberg-Tinlin, Scarlett Engberg-Tinlin, Angel Engberg-Tinlin, Bobbi Tinlin, Danielle Tinlin and Samantha Tinlin, all of Hastings, and Mary Anne Tinlin of Kearney; and one brother, Dan of Gothenburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
A memorial has been established.
Helen H. Bucknell
Former Minden resident Helen H. (Oarbole) Bucknell, 85, of Aurora, Colo., died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, in Aurora.
Memorial services are 6:30 p.m. Monday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Aurora. Additional memorial services are 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Minden. The remains were cremated. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery. Aurora-Chase Mortuary of Aurora is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Bucknell was born April 1, 1912, to James and Ollie Oarbole in Barton County, Mo. On Dec. 25, 1941, she married John R. Bucknell in Pittsburg, Kan. She was a registered nurse and was the Healthcare Administrator at Kearney County Health Services in Minden. Her husband was hospital administrator of the same hospital.
Survivors are one daughter, Mary Moore of Aurora; and two grandchildren.
Harlan R. Peterson
Hastings resident Harlan R. Peterson, 78, of 415 S. Woodland Ave. died Thursday, April 17, 1997, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Joe Scahill officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Peterson was born Aug. 5, 1918, to Charles and Edna (Dean) Peterson in Pauline. He graduated from Pauline High School in 1936. He moved to Hastings. On Feb. 25, 1939, he married LuluBelle Douglas. He worked for Swift and Co. He later was a Teamster for Consolidated Motor Freight Inc. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was a scout for the 329th Infantry 83rd Division. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Harla Watson of Hastings; one son, Michael D. of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
