Evalyn A. Schroer
Hastings resident Evalyn Ann (Soucek) Schroer, 83, of 144 E. Sixth St. died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at her home.
Rosary is 2 p.m. and services will follow Wednesday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
Mrs. Schroer was born Aug. 7, 1916, to Frank and Anna (Stretesky) Soucek at Spring Ranch. She graduated from Bladen High School. On Oct. 11, 1937, she married Alphonse Joseph Schroer at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings. She worked at the Fabric Shop and Schweser's in Hastings before becoming a seamstress in her home. On March 4, 1970, her husband died.
She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and the Adams County Extension Club.
Survivors are three sons, Dick of Tustin, Calif., Roger of Hastings and Doug of Longview, Texas; two daughters, Sue Friedl of Sanford, N.C., and Sally Davenport of Murray, Ky.; one brother, Joe of Minden; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters; one brother; and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.
Mary A. Ruble
Former Hastings resident Mary Ann (Wagner) Ruble, 76, of Vero Beach, Fla., died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Fla.
There are no services. Cox-Gifford Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Vero Beach is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Ruble was born June 7, 1923, to John and Anna Wagner in Hastings. She married Robert Ruble. He preceded her in death. She moved from Miami to Vero Beach 11 years ago.
She attended the First Covenant Church in Vero Beach.
Survivors are one daughter, Margaret Ruble of Vero Beach; three brothers, Carl of Lincoln, Harold of Hastings and Wilbur of Amarillo, Texas; and two sisters, Gertrude Herbst of Hastings and Philomena Lebsoch of Lincoln.
LaVerna Long
Former Hastings resident LaVerna (Gitt) Long, 76, of Littleton, Colo., died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver.
Memorial services were March 15 at Drinkwine Family Mortuary in Littleton with the Rev. Steve Goodier officiating. A private family burial followed. The remains were cremated.
Mrs. Long was born Nov. 20, 1923, to Fred and Matilda (Aschen) Gitt near Wilcox. She graduated from high school there and from Hastings Business College. She worked for Geyerman's and Gamble Robinson in Hastings as a bookkeeper. In 1947 she married James H. Long. They lived in the Englewood, Colo., and Littleton area. Her husband preceded her in death.
Surviving is one daughter, Sheila of Littleton.
She was preceded in death by one sister.
Floyd J. Trupp
Former Hastings resident Floyd Jacob Trupp, 82, of Antelope Valley, Calif., died Saturday, March 4, 2000, in Lancaster, Calif.
Services were March 9 at Mumaw Funeral Home in Lancaster. Burial was in Joshua Memorial Park in Lancaster.
Mr. Trupp was born March 24, 1917, to Jacob and Amelia Trupp in Hastings. He married Juanita Plumlee. He moved to Lancaster in 1939 where he worked on the Firsick Ranch. During the 1940s, he worked at the Cactus Mine in Rosamond, Calif. He later was co-owner in a trucking business and also owned a mechanical hay loading business. He retired in 1983.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Larry of Tehachapi, Calif.; one daughter, Karen Balog of North Fork, Calif.; three brothers, Jacob of Tucson, Ariz., Ray of Medford, Ore., and Roy of Hastings; one sister, Lucille Fincher of Hastings; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
Steven H. Swanson
Former Tribland area resident Steven H. Swanson, 57, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Swedish Hospital in Englewood, Colo.
Memorial services were Feb. 25 at Olinger Mortuaries-Wadsworth Funeral Home chapel in Denver. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Tower of Memories in Denver
Mr. Swanson was born Aug. 31, 1942, to Alvin and Viola (Sterkel) Swanson near Edgar. He attended Clay Center Public Schools. He moved with his family in 1957 to Denver and graduated from Jefferson High School in Colorado in 1960. He worked as a retail-sales associate for Foley's Department Stores in Colorado.
Survivors are his father of Golden, Colo.; and one sister, Bonnie Swanson of Golden.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Ernest H. 'Bud' Meyer
Rural Hubbell resident Ernest H. "Bud" Meyer, 80, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Thayer County Hospital in Hebron.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Hubbell with the Rev. Paul G. Albrecht officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in rural Hubbell. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber Funeral Home in Chester.
Mr. Meyer was born March 11, 1920, to Ernest and Lena (Fette) Meyer in rural Minden. On Aug. 18, 1940, he married Arlyne Bartling. He was a farmer in rural Hubbell.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Lions Club of Hubbell.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Gaylen of Lincoln and Robert of Hubbell; four daughters, Lorena Pohlmann of Deshler, Maxine Haddan of Fairbury, Janet Mathiesen of Longmont, Colo., and JoAnne Poppe of Chester; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Olive M. Brewer
Hansen resident Olive M. (Lowell) Brewer, 90, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Brewer was born Jan. 16, 1910, to Frank H. and Laura (Fairbanks) Lowell in Rosedale. She attended Hall County School District 49 and graduated from Rosedale High School in 1928. She worked at various jobs in Hastings. On May 26, 1932, she married Blaine Brewer in Hansen. She lived in Hansen until November 1999, when she moved to Kenesaw Haven Home. On Aug. 30, 1983, her husband died.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings and the Hansen Study Club.
Survivors are one son, Thomas of Hansen; one daughter, Glenna Bengtson of Hastings; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be given to Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings.
Glenn A. Gundelfinger
Former Hastings resident Glenn Alvin Gundelfinger, 67, of Quapaw, Okla., died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at his home.
Private services will be conducted at a later date. Derfelt's Baxter Chapel of Baxter Springs, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gundelfinger was born June 4, 1932, in Hastings. On Sept. 27, 1959, he married Della May Crabtree. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He moved from Sidney to Longmont, Colo., in 1967. From 1967-69 he managed the Red Cliff Motel in Lyons, Colo. He also worked as a programmer for IBM in Boulder, Colo., for several years. He retired in 1993 to raise thoroughbred horses near Quapaw.
Survivors are his wife; two sisters, Dorothy Burkhart and Faye Torske, both of Blue Hill; and one brother, George of Grand Island.
Viola S. Fisher
Hastings resident Viola S. (Rogge) Fisher, 87, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at Perkins.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Perkins Peace Chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Trumbull. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mrs. Fisher was born Jan. 11, 1913, to Henry D. and Lulu (Megrew) Rogge in Lincoln. She graduated from Trumbull High School in 1930. On March 18, 1944, she married George M. Gibble. She was a secretary for more than 25 years and worked for various businesses, including the Nebraska State Employment Services, Agricultural Research Service and the Aurora Community Center. Her husband died in 1974. She married Quinton Fisher. He died in June 1979.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and American Association of Retired Persons, where she served as secretary.
Survivors are one daughter, Linda Myers of Hastings; one son, George M. Jr. of Auburn, Ga.; two sisters, Doris Talbert of Hastings and Nina Graham of Centralia, Wash.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be given to the family.
Loyal K. Hudson
Smith Center, Kan., resident Loyal K. Hudson, 74, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin with the Rev. Dale McCain officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Athol, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Hudson was born Sept. 1, 1925, to Earl J. and Grace Mae (Rust) Hudson near Athol. He attended rural school in Smith County, Kan., and graduated from Athol High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. military during World War II. On Feb. 9, 1950, he married Evelyn Johnson in Smith Center. He was a retired farmer and moved to Smith Center in 1995.
He served on the Liberty Board of Education and on the German Township Board for several years.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Joyce Lammers of Hays, Kan., and Bonnie Slavik of Kensington, Kan.; three sons, Kenneth of Franklin and Tom and Kent, both of Kensington; one brother, Ralph of Tieton, Wash.; five sisters, Elma Konvalin of Kittitas, Wash., Mary Calhoun, Carol Johnson and Sue Forhdal, all of Tieton, and Phyllis Arnold of Eagle; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Robert L. Porter
Former Hastings resident Robert L. Porter, 64, of Portland, Ore., died Sunday, March 5, 2000, in Portland.
Services were March 10 at Young's Funeral Home chapel in Tigard, Ore. The remains were cremated. American Burial and Cremation Service in Tigard was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Porter was born June 26, 1935, to William Wilson and Beulah (Best) Porter in Hastings. On Feb. 6, 1954, he married Mary Jo Harder in Biloxi, Miss. He was a 1960 graduate of the University of Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Korean War. He worked for 10 years at North American Aviation in California. In 1969 he moved to Portland where he was a general engineer for Bonneville Power Administration. He retired in 1995.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Robert D. of Tigard and David M. of Newberg, Ore.; two daughters, Nancy Porter of Depoe Bay, Ore., and Jeannie Cox of Pompano Beach, Fla.; his mother of Bothell, Wash.; two brothers, Ken of Arlington, Wash., and Bill of Garden Grove, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Life Flight or charity of choice.
Ernest E. Sorge
Deshler resident Ernest E. Sorge, 92, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, in Deshler.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Duane Fahr officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Ahrendts Funeral Home in Deshler and two hours prior to services Saturday at the church.
Mr. Sorge was born Jan. 28, 1908, to Fred and Katharina (Lindemann) Sorge in rural Kiowa. He attended country school. On Oct. 8, 1936, he married Viola Kramp in Kiowa. He was a retired farmer.
He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, a church elder and past member of St. Peter Lutheran School Board of Education.
Survivors are his wife; four daughters, Dorothy Boss of Davenport, Esther Cellan of Exeter, Mabel Hogeland of Bruning and Eunice Anderson of Lincoln; four sons, Victor, Harvey and Norman, all of Deshler, and Allen of Moyie Springs, Idaho; one sister, Ida Deterding of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; 23 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.
Memorials have been established.
Sylvia E. Mohler
Formoso, Kan., resident Sylvia E. (Hyde) Mohler, 95, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Jewell County Hospital Long Term Care in Mankato, Kan.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Formoso Community Church with the Rev. Robert Elwell officiating. Burial will be in Balch Cemetery in Formoso. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.
Mrs. Mohler was born Oct. 22, 1904, to Jerome and Eva (Vanmeter) Hyde in Formoso. She attended Rock Dale and Blue Bird grade schools and graduated from Formoso High School. She lived most of her life in the Formoso area. She taught school at Shady Nook and Pleasant Home schools in Jewell County. On Sept. 21, 1924, she married Harold Marion Mohler in Mankato. He died Aug. 28, 1989.
She was a member of Formoso Community Church and the YWCA of Formoso.
Survivors are one son, Vernon Mohler of Superior; three daughters, Mona Hoard of Oxford, Marian Turner of Hastings and Eva Wiley of Cawker City, Kan.; one sister, Laura Hazel Creek of Kansas City, Kan.; 21 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Virgil and Forrest.
Memorials may be given in lieu of flowers to Formoso Community Church organ fund.
Violette M. Lingwall
Former Hastings resident Violette Marie (Anderson) Lingwall, 94, of Stromsburg died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at the Columbus Community Hospital.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Friday at Midwest Covenant Home Chapel in Stromsburg with the Rev. Keith Brozek and Chaplain Dick Bauer officiating. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
Mrs. Lingwall was born Oct. 9, 1905, to Jonas A. and Mary (Hedman) Anderson in Stromsburg. She graduated from high school there in 1922 and began teaching country school at age 16. She attended Luther College in Wahoo and Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, Minn. She taught at various country schools in the Stromsburg area. In 1933 she married the Rev. Martin B. Lingwall. She and her husband lived in Harcourt, Iowa; Brainerd, Minn.; Orion, Ill.; Axtell; Minneapolis; and Denver. After retirement, they moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. They moved to Park Villa in Stromsburg in 1989. She moved to Midwest Covenant Home in 1999. Her husband preceded her in death.
She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg.
Survivors are one son, James B. of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Beverly Mooney of West St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.
Memorials may be given to the Salem Lutheran Church, Midwest Covenant Home, both in Stromsburg, the Bethphage Mission in Axtell or the donor's choice.
Maxine M. Rutt
Hastings resident Maxine M. (Schaffer) Rutt, 77, of 515 Lane C died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.
Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. There is no viewing.
Mrs. Rutt was born Jan. 16, 1923, to Godfrey and Viola (McVicker) Schaffer in Hastings. She worked at the Hastings Regional Center, Johnson Concrete Products in Hastings and Hastings Taxi Service.
Survivors are five sons, Ricky of Hastings, Gary of Lacey, Wash., Richard Jr. of Olympia, Wash., and Rod and Randy, both of Arlington, Wash.; four daughters, Shelly Schade of Hastings, Sharon Rutt of Marysville, Wash., Janet Carabello of Arlington and Ronda Wayne of Stanwood, Wash.; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Donald L. Jahn Jr.
Former Blue Hill resident Donald L. Jahn Jr., 41, of Parkville, Mo., died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.
Rosary is 7 p.m. Friday and services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Minden with the Rev. James O'Connor officiating. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Saturday at the Blue Hill Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. Friday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mr. Jahn was born July 22, 1958, to Donald and Patricia (Miller) Jahn in Washington, D.C. He grew up in Blue Hill and in Blair. He graduated from Blair High School in 1976. On July 28, 1978, he married Dianne Lutz in Blair. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1980. He then worked for General Motors in Indiana, Florida and Michigan. He and his wife moved to Parkville in 1993.
He was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Parkville.
Survivors are his wife; three sons, Donald L. III, Garrett and Matthew, all of Parkville; his parents of Minden; one brother, Jeffrey of Minneapolis; one sister, Lisa Werner of Minden; and his grandmother, Opal Jahn of Minden.
He was preceded in death by one son, Justin; one brother; and three grandparents.
Memorials can be given to the American Heart Association.
Elmer D. George
Gilead resident Elmer D. George, 78, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, in Lincoln.
There are no services and no visitation. The remains were cremated. Price Funeral Home of Hebron is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. George was born Sept. 5, 1921, to Henry and Emma (Junker) George in Gilead. He attended country school southwest of Gilead and worked at the Ben Rauner farm. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Hebron, then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in Asia and the Philippines and was discharged in 1945. He then started working for the railroad. On Dec. 23, 1947, he married Elaine Bandemer. He also farmed and ran the road grader for the Thayer County Road Department.
He was a former volunteer fireman in Gilead and a former member of American Legion Saxton Post No. 180 in Hebron. He was a life member of Thayer County VFW Gold Star Post No. 5328 of Hebron.
Surviving is his wife.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
