Keturah M. Zade
Franklin resident Keturah M. (Lain) Zade, 82, died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the Missionary Church in Franklin with the Rev. Bryan Balasa officiating. Burial will be in the Red Cloud Cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud and 8 a.m. until services Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Zade was born April 25, 1917, to William and Margaret Lain in Red Cloud. She graduated from high school there in 1935. On Jan. 27, 1936, she married Edward L. Zade in Smith Center, Kan. They lived on a farm north of Thornburg, Kan., until 1938 when they moved to Smith Center. They later moved to Red Cloud and then to Oxford where she was a certified nursing assistant at the nursing home. In 1985 she and her husband moved to Franklin. On Aug. 20, 1991, her husband died.
She was a member of the Franklin Missionary Church.
Survivors are one son, Virgil of Alberta, Minn.; three daughters, Sharon Dedrick of Laurel, Md., Gwen Quig of Casper, Wyo., and Cheryl Mattison of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two sisters; two brothers; and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the church.

Chester Hansen
Former Upland resident Chester Hansen, 78, of Anaheim, Calif., died Dec. 15, 1999, in Anaheim.
Memorial services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Minden with the Rev. Kathy Bryant officiating. Burial will be 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at the Minden Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Minden American Legion Post No. 94. The remains were cremated. Layton Funeral Home of Minden is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hansen was born Dec. 7, 1921, to Henry and Clara Hansen in Upland. He attended Kearney State Teachers College and was a high school teacher for 36 years. He served in the U.S. Army with the 89th Infantry Division during World War II. He married Dorothy Coy. She preceded him in death. He was a resident of California since 1952.
Survivors are two sons, Dennis of Cypress, Calif., and Robert of Long Beach; two sisters, Euarda Glenn of Minden and Doris Kious of Fort Morgan, Colo.; one brother, Stanley of Boulder, Colo.; and two grandchildren.

Eunice V. Davis
Former Hastings resident Eunice V. (Wathen) Davis, 76, of Grand Island died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Grand Island.
Memorial services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Book signing is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Davis was born Sept. 13, 1923, to John E. and Pauline (Rounds) Wathen in Oakland, Iowa. She graduated from St. Edward High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Womens Army Corps during World War II. On May 5, 1945, she married Stanley Davis. She was a bookkeeper in Hastings at Berts Pharmacy and then Redfield Pharmacy. On April 7, 1975, her husband died.
She was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors are one sister, Sharon Bennett of Hastings; and one brother, Paul of Hastings.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be given to the American Legion or the World War II Memorial.

Ivan C. Birky
Strang resident Ivan C. Birky, 80, died Friday, March 24, 2000, in Grand Island.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Mennonite Church in Shickley with the Rev. Wilton Detweiler officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery at Shickley. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Monday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.
Mr. Birky was born Nov. 16, 1919, to Jacob and Alma (Eichelberg) Birky in Hopedale, Ill.
Survivors are his wife, Roine of Geneva; a son, James of Strang; two daughters, Imogene "Genie" Tirrel of Mitchell and Donna Imhoff of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Lester of Wyaconda, Mo., and Clayton of Alaska; three sisters, Viola Martin of Delavan, Ill., Berneice Naffziger of Atlanta, Ill., Janice Martin of Granger, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Glenn H. Klein
Former Roseland resident Glenn Herman Klein, 85, of Lakeview, Ark., died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Arkansas.
Memorial services will be 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethel Baptist Church in Lakeview with the Rev. Mark Norris officiating. Burial will be private. Baxter County Funeral Home in Mountain Home, Ark., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Klein was born March 27, 1914, to Peter and Lena Klein in Roseland. On Dec. 22, 1985, he married Barbara Kral in Mountain Home. He moved from Rockford, Ill., to Lakeview in 1976. He was a retired supervisor for an aluminum factory and a building contractor.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Moose Lodge of Mountain Home.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Charles of Rockford; three daughters, Sharon Holloway of California, and Doris Klein and Patty Oliveri, both of Rockford; two brothers, Orville of Kenesaw and Calvin of Grand Island; three sisters, Goldae Whiting and Hazel Manske, both of Hastings, and Lyla Schnase of Del Rio, Texas; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Memorials may be given to the church building fund or the charity of the donor's choice.

E. Marion 'Tiny' Shurigar
Kenesaw resident E. Marion "Tiny" Shurigar, 71, died Thursday, March 23, 2000, in rural Heartwell.
Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church in Kenesaw with Tom Gould officiating. Burial will be at the Kenesaw Cemetery. Friends may sign the book until 9 p.m. today and 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.
Mr. Shurigar was born Nov. 13, 1928, to John and Mollye (Godwin) Shurigar near Kenesaw. From 1944-46 he worked as a harvester for Herb Augustin, Chub Augustin and Orville Armstrong. He also started farming in 1945 for his father. On Sept. 23, 1952, he married Mildred Severance in Minot, S.D. He and his brothers started Shurigar Custom Dirt Contracting in 1955; Custom Grain Drying in 1958; and formed a corporation in 1960. They did custom hauling for NC Seed from 1959-64. He retired in 1999.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Kathy Hoffmann of Kenesaw; one sister, Dorothy Hall of Grand Island; one brother, Frank of Kenesaw; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by six brothers.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Rixte 'Sally' Wittfoth
Hildreth resident Rixte "Sally" (Hemmen) Wittfoth, 93, died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Grandview Manor in Campbell.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth with the Rev. Kim Stover officiating. Burial will be in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Hildreth. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Jelden-Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth.
Mrs. Wittfoth was born July 15, 1906, to Herman and Hannah (Flesner) Hemmen in Wilcox. She grew up in the Wilcox and Hildreth areas. On Dec. 2, 1926, she married Fredrick Wittfoth in Minden. They farmed near Hildreth. Her husband died in 1973.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and was involved in Bible study.
Survivors are two daughters, Ruth Johnson of Upland and Lenora Kumke of Blue Hill; two sisters, Rena Wilken of Hildreth and Bena Gillespie of Blue Hill; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, William; two brothers; and two sisters.
Memorials may be given to the church or Grandview Manor in Campbell.

Darrell F. Davis
Superior resident Darrell Forrest Davis, 92, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.
Graveside services were to be 10:30 a.m. today at Evergreen Cemetery in Superior with the Rev. Jon Albrecht officiating. Williams Funeral Home of Superior was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Davis was born Sept. 26, 1907, to Elzy Jay and Elizabeth May (Kibler) Davis in Minneapolis, Kan. He moved with his family to Medford, Ore., at a young age and started school there. They returned to Minneapolis where he finished school. In 1923 he moved to Superior where he worked with the Southern Nebraska Power Co. He also sanded and finished floors with his stepfather. After he turned 80, he traveled with a circus. He also sold post cards by mail to collectors.
He was preceded in death by one sister.

Karen 'Jill' Ricketts
Hastings resident Karen "Jill" (Kunkel) Ricketts, 63, of 1401 Pershing Road died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Harold Stromer officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Ricketts was born Jan. 10, 1937, to Herbert and Dorthea (Rassmussen) Kunkel in North Platte. She graduated from North Platte High School and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On June 9, 1957, she married Bud Ricketts. They moved to Hastings in 1968 where she was a real estate agent for Century 21.
She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Hastings Symphony Orchestra. She also won several Realtor awards and was Realtor of the Year in 1999.
Survivors are her husband; one son, Jeff of Lincoln; two daughters, Crystal Ricketts of Cincinnati and Cyndy Ricketts of Lincoln; her mother of Texas; three sisters, Jolene Gartrell of Texas, Gaye Gartrell of Arizona and Cheryl Struve of Lincoln; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the church.

Delbert 'Deb' A. Reichstein
Former area resident Delbert "Deb" A. Reichstein, 83, of Gothenburg died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Gothenburg with the Rev. David Fowler officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with military honors by the Gothenburg Firing Squad. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Blase Memorial Funeral Home chapel in Gothenburg.
Mr. Reichstein was born Sept. 9, 1916, to William C. and Florence Adelia (Emigh) Reichstein in Campbell. He graduated from Campbell High School in 1933. In 1934 he moved with his family to Blue Hill where he and his father operated the Flour Mill. He worked for the Blue Hill Leader as a linotype operator and printer from 1937-48. From 1942-46 he served in the U.S. military with the 195th Field Artillery in the European Theater during World War II. On June 22, 1947, he married Josephine Zimmerman in Blue Hill. From 1946-56 he was the printer-operator at Commercial Advertiser in Red Cloud. He also was the linotype operator for the Ord Quiz in Ord for several months in 1948. From 1956-80 he was the printer-operator at the Gothenburg Times. After his retirement, he was a funeral assistant at McVay Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Gothenburg Post No. 64, Disabled American Veterans in North Platte, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5132 in Gothenburg, Cancer Support Group, Diabetic Group and the Gothenburg Senior Center and its Pool League.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Debra Minary of Louisville, Colo.; one son, Tom of Yacolt, Wash.; one sister, Evelyn Hamer of Longview, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the church or Gothenburg Senior Center.

Eugene A. Persinger
Hastings resident Eugene A. Persinger, 69, of 200 W. Fifth St. died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at his home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 1-9 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Persinger was born Jan. 6, 1931, to Alva and Marie (Imler) Persinger in Republic, Kan. He moved with his family to Juniata in 1946 and graduated from high school there in 1949. On July 21, 1952, he married Jean Munroe in Hastings. He started Gene's Glass Service in 1961 in Hastings and operated it until 1999.
He was a member of the Eagles Club, Hastings Bowling Association, American Auto Association, National Rifle Association and United Commercial Travelers.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Sheri Steiner of Hastings and Vicki Snider of Blue Hill; two sons, Donnie and Lonnie, both of Kearney; his mother of Hastings; one brother, Marvin of Hurricane, Utah; two sisters, Darlene Trobaugh of Roache Harbor, Wash., and Shirley Kincaid of Kansas City, Mo.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Archie H. Jones
Former Hastings resident Archie Harrison Jones, 79, of Denver died Jan. 18, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home in Denver.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date in Chicago and Keystone, Colo. All Veterans Burial and Cremation Services of Wheat Ridge, Colo., was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Jones was born Feb. 17, 1920, to Archie Harrison and Frances (Glaves) Jones in Kenosha, Wis. On Dec. 26, 1941, he married Phyllis Kathryn Rutherford. He then served four years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of captain. He earned a bachelor's degree from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis. He also graduated from the University of Chicago with a master's degree and doctorate in history. He was assistant professor of history at Hastings College; associate professor of history and philosophy at Humboldt State College in Arcata, Calif.; associate director of the Chicago Historical Society and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of American studies at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. In 1970 he was appointed dean of academic affairs at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. He became president of Southwest State University in Marshall, Minn., in 1973. After retirement, he worked as a senior policy and budget analyst for Colorado's Office of State Planning and Budgeting. He was also an administrative officer for the Colorado Division of Water Resources. He edited an edition of Moses Cort Tyler's history of American literature and published several essays, book reviews and sermons.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Michael of Libertyville, Ill.; one daughter, Carolyn Jones of Denver; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the University of Chicago, office of the dean of the college, 1116 E. 59th St., Chicago, IL 60637.

Ruth Branstetter
Superior resident Ruth (Wingo) Branstetter, 87, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services are 3 p.m. Saturday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Francis Cemetery in Kansas with the Rev. Joe Briseno officiating. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Branstetter was born Feb. 9, 1913, to George and Mary Alice (Belt) Wingo near Alta Vista, Kan. She attended school in Council Grove, Kan. On Sept. 7, 1938, she married James Thomas Copper in Wray, Colo. She later married Thomas Haywood Branstetter on Dec. 28, 1973, in El Dorado, Kan. In 1981 her husband died and she moved from Warsaw, Mo., to Superior.
She was a member of the Church of Christ in Superior.
Survivors are six daughters, Carol Larson of St. Francis, Frances Beckner of Goodland, Kan., Janice King of Burlington, Colo., and Mary Hanna, Virginia Sporing and Ruth Studer, all of Superior; one son, James Copper of Superior; one brother, William of Dallas; 17 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Eugene; two sisters; one brother; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the Diabetes Foundation Children's Research or to the family, 47010 Hwy. 24, Burlington, CO 80807.

Stanley J. Pallas
Lawrence resident Stanley J. Pallas, 72, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Nelson.
Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Sunday and services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence with Monsignor Ivan Vap and the Revs. Gerald Vap and Dennis Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Pallas was born Feb. 5, 1928, to Joseph and Marie (Mazour) Pallas in Deweese. He attended Nelson High School. On June 20, 1950, he married Joan M. Vap in Hastings. He worked for the Nuckolls County Department of Roads and retired in 1978.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Lawrence Village Board. He was also a 26-year member of the Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department where he served as secretary-treasurer.
Survivors are his wife; four sons, Mike of Omaha, Ben of Hastings, Gary of Vancouver, Wash., and Tim of Stromsburg; three daughters, Jolene Cerveny of Liberty, Mo., Pam Arbogast of Lawrence and Laura Dexter of Grand Island; one sister, Frances Horinek of Atwood, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, LeAnn; one brother; one sister; and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the Lawrence Volunteer Fire Department or to the family.

Donald Sears
Burwell resident Donald Sears, 68, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at his home at Calamus Lake.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ord United Methodist Church with the Revs. James B. Miller and James H. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Kent Cemetery near Taylor. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel in Ord.
Survivors are his wife; three daughters, including Kelly Owens of Hastings; four brothers; and nine grandchildren.

Ruby G. Nelson
Minden resident Ruby G. (Hendricks) Nelson, 92, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Nelson was born March 2, 1908, to Samuel and Edith (Hall) Hendricks in Sargent. At a young age, she moved to Upland and graduated from Upland High School in 1926. On June 21, 1926, she married Lester Nelson. They farmed for 18 years in the Minden area. They then moved into Minden. On Feb. 18, her husband died.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Rebekah Lodge in Minden.
Survivors are two daughters, Carol Wright of Minden and Jackie Meester of Kearney; one brother, Donald of Denver; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Clarence W. Timm
Eustis resident Clarence Wesley Timm, 82, died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at his home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Eustis with the Rev. Dr. William Deahl officiating. Burial will be in the East Cemetery in Eustis. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the church. Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are his wife; four daughters, including Barbara Lebsack of Hastings; one son; one sister; and nine grandchildren.

Shirley A. Wacker
Lincoln resident Shirley Ann (Fahrenbruch) Wacker, 64, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at her home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Culbertson with the Rev. Don Morton officiating. Burial will be at the Culbertson Cemetery. Visitation is today at Herrmann Funeral Home chapel in McCook.
Survivors are two sons, including Douglas of Hastings; her mother; two sisters; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
