Donald L. Mack
Kenesaw resident Donald L. Mack, 68, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Kenesaw with the Rev. Tom Gould officiating. Burial will be at the Kenesaw Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 268 of Kenesaw. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.
Mr. Mack was born Jan. 25, 1932, to Earl and Myrtle (Morse) Mack in Adams County. He graduated from Kenesaw High School in 1949. From 1950-54 he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He then began farming with his father. On Nov. 11, 1955, he married Yvonne Niemeyer in Hastings. Later he owned Mack and Beal Well, a well digging business in Kenesaw. In 1994 he retired from farming.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and American Legion Post No. 268 of Kenesaw.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Bruce and Curtis, both of Kenesaw; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Donald Keith, and two sisters.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Mabel I. Haselbarth
Minden resident Mabel I. (Hansen) Haselbarth, 85, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Kearney County Health Services Hospital in Minden.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fredericksburg Lutheran Church near Minden with the Rev. Ronald Ebb officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Haselbarth was born Oct. 5, 1914, to Hans A. and Rosey (Boisen) Hansen near Norman. At a young age, she moved with her family to a farm five miles south of Minden and graduated from Minden High School in 1933. She worked at Bethany Home, Gambles and later at Arlo's Hardware, all in Minden. On March 14, 1954, she married Merle Haselbarth in Minden.
She was a member of Fredericksburg Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir. She was a past volunteer for the Red Cross and a member of the Danish Brotherhood in Minden.
Survivors are her husband; one son, Glen of Minden; one sister, Lillie Hansen of Minden; and one brother, Alfred of Minden.
She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
A memorial fund has been established.

Victor M. Atchity Sr.
Hastings resident Victor M. Atchity Sr., 80, of 220 Forest Boulevard died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Rosary is 10:30 a.m. and services are 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Atchity was born Jan. 4, 1920, to James A. Sr. and Anna (Fatall) Atchity in Kansas City, Mo. On June 30, 1942, he married Leona Hoefer in Kansas City. From 1942-46 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Guadalcanal. He owned and operated Atchity's Food Marts for 45 years in Kansas City. In 1980 he retired and moved to Hastings.
He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He was a past member of several grocery retail associations.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Jackie Hunt of Grand Island and Janet Spallo of Kansas City; four sons, Victor "Mike," Dan and John, all of Hastings, and Richard of Grand Island; one sister, Lorraine Hake of Leawood, Kan.; one brother, James Atchity Jr. of St. Joseph, Mo.; and 23 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hastings Catholic Schools.

Leonard M. Jisa
Hastings resident Leonard M. Jisa, 75, of 603 Oswego Ave. died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Rosary is 8 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings and services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David Bourek officiating. Graveside services with military rites will be 2 p.m. at Central City Cemetery in Central City. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Mr. Jisa was born Feb. 24, 1925, to Charles and Agnes (Ruzicka) Jisa in Loma. He lived with his aunt and uncle, Gerald and Alice Ruzicka. He graduated from Polk High School in 1945. From 1945-46 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Sept. 8, 1948, he married Mary L. McMahon in Central City. He farmed for 16 years in Polk, Clarks and Central City areas. In 1964 he moved from Central City to Hastings where he worked for Farmland Industries for 23 years. He retired in 1986.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Men's Club, Knights of Columbus and Hastings Catholic Activities Association. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Cecilia Stenzel of Monroe and Susanna Boeding and Vivienne Johnson, both of Hastings; one son, Timothy of Hastings; four sisters, Mary Ann Hofmann of Kentucky, Betty Jean Horn of Waco, Texas, Agnes Simcox of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Ilene Woebbecke of Shawnee, Kan.; one brother, Charles of Omaha; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three sons, James, Joseph and Michael; and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the St. Cecilia's Bus Fund.

Edward S. Werner
Fairfield resident Edward Stein Werner, 88, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Integrated Health Services of Edgar in Edgar.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Christ in Deweese with Edward Werner, Gary Werner and Rodney Shaw officiating. Burial will be in the Fairfield Cemetery. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Werner was born July 25, 1911, to Walter and Elizabeth (Mongold) Stein in Cambridge, Md. In 1919 he moved to Alderdale, Wash., where he was adopted by his half sister, Del Werner, and her husband, Fred. He and his family then moved to a farm near Broken Bow and in 1931, moved to a farm near Deweese. On July 9, 1937, he married Iona Mae Warboys. He farmed until 1975 when he retired. He and his wife moved in 1979 to Fairfield where he cut and chopped wood for sale. He was a preacher for the Church of Christ in Deweese for 47 years. On Oct. 22, 1985, his wife died.
Survivors are one daughter, Linda Fuelling of Hickman; three sons, Edward E. of Coos Bay, Ore., Gary of Hesston, Kan., and David of Wahoo; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by two sons, Billy and Timothy.
Memorials may be given to the church.

Joanie Burling
Aurora resident Joanie Burling, 51, died Monday, May 8, 2000, after a 3 1/2 year battle with cancer.
Memorial services were Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Aurora with the Rev. Jay Mitchell officiating. Burial was in the Aurora Cemetery. Higby Mortuary of Aurora was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are her husband, former Kenesaw resident Eldon Burling; two sons; three stepdaughters, including Beth Fotinos and Brenda Stocker, both of Kenesaw; one stepson, Robert Burling of Hastings; one brother; one grandchild; 11 stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Janet L. Parrish
Former Fairfield resident Janet L. (Doll) Parrish, 55, of Kansas City, Mo., died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at her home.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Funeral Home Nolan Road chapel in Independence, Mo. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Monday at the Fairfield Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Parrish was born June 15, 1944, to Elmo and Marjorie Doll in Fairfield. She married Lawrence Parrish. She lived in Independence for 32 years before moving to Kansas City. She was employed by Housing and Urban Development for 25 years and retired in 1999. On Feb. 10, 1993, her husband died.
She was a member of Animals Best Friends, Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah and PAWS.
Survivors are her mother of Lincoln and one brother, Lyle of Gregory, S.D.
Memorials may be given to Animals Best Friends, in care of Dianne Sanderson, 875 Vista Drive, Independence, MO 64056 or the Kansas City Hospice.

Carl F. Stromer
Glenvil resident Carl F. Stromer, 77, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil with the Rev. Tim Wiggins officiating. Burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
Mr. Stromer was born Aug. 4, 1922, to Wilke and Gebke (Enninga) Stromer in Clay County. On June 25, 1950, he married Darlene A. Utecht in Hastings. He worked for Western Land Roller in Hastings and in sales at McClelland-Rose Cars in Hastings. He owned and operated the City Cafe in Glenvil.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Survivors are his wife; three sons, Daniel of Pawnee City, Dean of Glenvil and Gary of Hastings; one sister, Hilda Sanders of Seward; one brother, Reemt of Glenvil; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
Memorials may be given to the church or Glenvil Fire and Rescue Unit.

Virgil H. Eppler
Shickley resident Virgil Henry Eppler, 88, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, in Geneva.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Shickley with the Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Ohiowa Public Cemetery. Visitation began at 11 a.m. today at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.
Mr. Eppler was born March 25, 1912, to Fred and Caroline (Kappmeyer) Eppler in Ohiowa. He married Norma L. Bumgarner. She died in 1955. He then married Ruby (Heironymus) Merryman. She died in 1996.
Survivors are two daughters, Mariann Anderson of Shickley and Connie Eppler of Lincoln; two stepdaughters, Karen Loseke of Gainesville, Texas, and Janis Lautzenhiser of Crete; one stepson, James Merryman of Bear Creek, Pa.; one sister, Gladys Gibbon of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family.

Javin M. Witte
Javin Micheal Witte, infant son of Lyndsey Primrose and Scott Witte of Hastings, was stillborn Friday, May 12, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Private services were held today. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are his grandparents, Pam and Gary Primrose and Lena Keen, all of Hastings, and Norman Witte of Blue Hill; and great-grandparents, Don and Darlene Stromer of Hastings, Olga Primrose of Albion, Marie Fischer and Walter and LaVera Witte, all of Blue Hill.

W. James 'Jim' Turpit
Former Hastings resident W. James "Jim" Turpit, 85, of Corona del Mar, Calif., died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at his home.
Services were May 5 at St. Matthew's Traditional Episcopal Church in Newport Beach, Calif. Pacific View Mortuary of Corona del Mar was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Turpit was born Oct. 2, 1914, to Roy and Ella Turpit in Nebraska. He was raised in Hastings. He received degrees from Duke University and the University of Nebraska School of Law. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a first lieutenant. He was a pilot in the Aleutian Islands. He and his wife, Barbara, settled in Whittier, Calif., in 1946. He practiced law in Whittier, first with Edward Guirado and then with his firm, Turpit, Thompson and Miller. He was a retired Los Angeles County Superior Court judge. He and his wife moved to Corona del Mar in 1988. His wife preceded him in death.
He was a member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church, where he was a vestryman; Whittier Masonic Lodge; Pasadena Scottish Rite; Al Malaikah Shrine Club; San Gabriel Conclave and other Masonic organizations. He was past president of Oralingua School for the Hearing Impaired, Whittier Rotary Club and Whittier Bar Association. He also was past commander of American Legion Service Clubs Post 548.
Survivors are two daughters, Lorrie Smith of Corona del Mar and Elizabeth Reynolds of New York City; two sons, John of Coronado, Calif., and Bill of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to St. Matthew's Church or to Oralingua School for the Hearing Impaired, 7056 S. Washington Ave., Whittier, CA 90602.

Willis C. Wescoat
Former Riverton resident Willis C. Wescoat, 73, of Lexington died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Lexington with the Rev. David Weller officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home chapel in Lexington.
Mr. Wescoat was born Oct. 27, 1926, to Charlie and Gladys (Kugler) Wescoat in Riverton. On Jan. 17, 1957, he married Eileen Schumm in Alma. They moved to Lexington in 1958. He farmed for Charlton Stuart and worked for Ed Fasse in Cozad. He also worked at several area haymills and retired from Monroe's in 1992. After retirement, he did yard work in the Lexington area.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Patrick and Michael, both of Lexington; four daughters, Maxine Vieth of Grand Island, Pam Wescoat of Lexington, Ruth Bohlen of Stockton, Ill., and Amy Tallon of Lincoln; one brother, Alvin of Lexington; one sister, Ethel Farrens of Smith Center, Kan.; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, William.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Valdon 'Pete' Keeler
Davenport resident Valdon "Pete" Keeler, 54, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, in Davenport.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ's Lutheran Church in Davenport with the Rev. Bill Waterman officiating. Burial will be in the Davenport City Cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Urbauer-Price Funeral Home in Davenport.
Mr. Keeler was born Jan. 12, 1946, to Lowell E. and Arlene (Avers) Keeler in rural Davenport. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1964 and worked as a farmer and truck driver. On April 3, 1999, he married Teresa Wessels in Davenport.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Brandon and Michael, both of Lincoln; one stepson, Justin Gunn of Edgar; one daughter, Kelly Martin of Deshler; one stepdaughter, Niki Wessels of Blue Hill; his mother and stepfather, Arlene and Dean Seifert of Clyde, Kan.; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Danon "Danny"; his father; and one brother.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the family, 108 W. Seventh St., Davenport, NE 68335.

William L. Steadman
Campbell resident William L. Steadman, 69, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Grandview Manor Nursing Home in Campbell.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Friday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell with military rites conducted by the North Platte Honor Guard. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Merten-Butler Mortuary in Blue Hill.
Mr. Steadman was born May 7, 1931, to Alvin C. and Ora A. (Kennedy) Steadman in Orleans. He graduated from Orleans High School. From 1952-54 he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He moved from Lexington to Clay Center in 1980 where he owned and operated the Twin Oaks Motel. In 1991 he moved to Inavale and then to Campbell in April.
He was a member of the Clay Center VFW.
Survivors are three sons, Michael of Auburn, Bryan of New Town, Pa., and Rick of Denver; two brothers, Jim of Overland Park, Kan., and Tracey of Denver; four sisters, Shirley Wolzen of Grand Island, Levena Jackson of Happy, Texas, Marilyn Bashford of Manhattan, Kan., and Jackie Muir of Naponee; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Memorials have been established.

Neal J. Baughman
Former Hastings resident Neal J. Baughman, 84, of Filer, Idaho, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Services were May 11 at the Buhl Church of the Nazarene in Buhl, Idaho. Burial was in the West End Cemetery in Buhl. Farmer Funeral Home Chapel in Buhl was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Baughman was born April 11, 1916, to Burt and Cora (Brown) Baughman in Chanute, Kan. He attended Deep Creek School in Buhl until eighth grade. He married Ada Johnson and they farmed in the Buhl area for several years. He married Lucile Weber on June 4, 1952. He farmed most of his life. He lived in Hastings for 20 years. After retirement, he was a ditch rider in Buhl.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Frank Weber of Cairo; three daughters, Donna Lemmons of Hagerman, Idaho, Joan Priebe of Wendell, Idaho, and Jolene Holmes of Topeka, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Bonnie; and two brothers.

Lorraine Woll
Hastings resident Lorraine Woll, 83, of 730 Webster Ave. died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Dallas B. Pfeil
Doniphan resident Dallas B. Pfeil, 71, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Doniphan with the Rev. Kenneth McClain officiating. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery in Doniphan. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Mr. Pfeil was born Oct. 3, 1928, to Clarence and Nellie (Sparks) Pfeil in Doniphan. He grew up and attended school in the McCook and Alma areas. From 1949-52 he served in the U.S. Army 2nd Signal Corps in the 2nd Division during the Korean War. He returned to Nebraska. On April 12, 1953, he married H. Joan Hendrickson in Grand Island. They lived in Doniphan. He worked in maintenance for the Weyerhauser Paper Packaging Co. in Hastings for 20 years and then with Chief Industries in Grand Island. He retired in 1992. His wife died in 1997.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors are two sons, Richard of St. Paul and Donald of Moore, Okla.; one daughter, Linda Fisher of Sheridan, Wyo.; one brother, Robert of Alma; one sister, Virginia Chipperfield of Alma; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one son, Timothy D.; and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the church's Little Miracles Day Care Center.

Carl M. Benson
Mankato, Kan., resident Carl Marcus "Mark" Benson, 84, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Mitchell County Community Hospital in Beloit, Kan.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mankato with the Rev. Elwin Bergstraesser officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Scandia, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.
Mr. Benson was born Nov. 7, 1915, to Carl Nickoli and Mariane Louise Michaelson (Nelson) Benson in Scandia. On Feb. 7, 1939, he married H. Maxine Christensen in Norway, Kan. He was a retired farmer and state highway worker.
He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mankato Country Club, Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Marjean Schroeder of Superior and Susan Bradrick of Mankato; two sons, Marcus A. of Phillips and Richard of McPherson, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the church, Mankato Country Club or the Ute Theater in Mankato.
