U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Charles Hill
Former Hastings resident Charles Hill, 69, of Ogallala died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ogallala with the Rev. David Dobbertien officiating. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery with military honors by the Ogallala Honor Guard. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today with family receiving friends from 7-8 p.m. at Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala.
Mr. Hill was born June 22, 1930, to William and Mabel (Tockey) Hill in Lewellen. He graduated from Arthur High School in 1947. He worked as a truck driver and hauled salt out of Kansas until 1951. He then worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings. On Feb. 26, 1951, he married Sylvia Sydow in Hastings. From 1951-53 he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. He returned to Hastings and attended Hastings College. In 1955 he moved to California where he sold NAPA auto parts. He and his family returned to Hastings in 1961 and managed several restaurants in the area. In 1967 they moved to Keystone where he worked for the Keystone-Arthur Telephone Co. He began public relations work for the Veterans of Foreign Wars based in Kansas City, Mo., in 1974. He and his wife moved to Ogallala in 1984 where he continued to work for the VFW. In 1990 he retired.
He was a member of the VFW and served as state commander. He also helped start a baseball program in Keystone. He earned the Korean Service Medal with one bronze star and the United Nations service medal.
Survivors are his wife; four sons, Edwin of Glenvil, Arthur of Casper, Wyo., Tony Eugene of Eldridge, Iowa, and Larry of Akron, Colo.; three sisters, Martha Gies, Lois Vath and Mabel Statler, all of Keystone; one brother, William Jr. of Keystone; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established.

Lloyd E. Ganschmer
Former Harvard resident Lloyd Edward Genschmer, 82, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Spirit Lake.
Services were May 31 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Webster City, Iowa, with the Revs. Mike Morgan and Cindi O'Brien officiating. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery in Webster City with military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 191. Foster Funeral Home of Webster City was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Genschmer was born Oct. 8, 1917, to Edward and Clara (Zimmerman) Genschmer near Harvard. He graduated from Harvard High School in 1934 and started in the carpentry business. In 1936 he moved to California. On Nov. 21, 1941, he married Margaret McCollough at Glendale, Calif. He continued to work in the carpentry business. From 1943-45 he served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the South Pacific. He then returned to California and moved to Webster City in 1948. He was a lathing and plaster contractor in the Webster City area until retirement in 1982. In 1984 he and his wife moved to Spirit Lake.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and Spirit Lake United Methodist Church and served as a trustee for both churches.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Currey of Oro Valley, Ariz.; one son, Douglas of Stockton, Calif.; three sisters, Agnes Smidt and Lenora Plum, both of Hastings, and Violet Chatterson of Ravenna; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Evelyn L. Walling
Former area resident Evelyn L. (Meininger) Walling, 75, of Lincoln died Monday, June 5, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln. Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lincoln with the Rev. Gary Coulter officiating. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Lincoln. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Walling was born Jan. 19, 1925, to Herbert and Irene (Brouillette) Meininger in Campbell. On Oct. 16, 1943, she married Charles L. Walling in Deweese. She was the former owner of Walling's Drive-In in the Havelock area of Lincoln and was employed at Lenco and Contro Data. She retired from Molex Assembly Plant in 1999 where she worked for more than 13 years. Her husband preceded her in death.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Survivors are two sons, Stephen of Raymond and John of Lincoln; three daughters, Donna Schneider of Cleburne, Texas, Ellen Rowen of Lincoln and Lisa Marie Rosoy of Omaha; two brothers, Dwayne "Bud" of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Don of Hastings; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two brothers.

Doris L. Koch
Hastings resident Doris Loraine (Woods) Koch, 82, of 1127 Circle L died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Graveside services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Pacific Crest Cemetery in Redondo Beach, Calif. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of local arrangements.
Mrs. Koch was born Nov. 17, 1917, to Ralph and Bessie (Guard) Woods in Bayard. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1935. On March 6, 1942, she married Willis A. Koch. She worked as a computer operator at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings during World War II. She lived in Redondo Beach for 40 years and was a city employee there for 20 years. She was active in setting up the first computer systems for the Redondo Beach Library and Redondo Police Department in the 1970s. In 1973 her husband died. She returned to Hastings.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was active at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.
Survivors are one son, Kim of Redondo Beach; one brother, Kenneth Woods of Oregon; three sisters, Marilyn Skarin of Blue Hill and Darlene Lap and Betty Fullerton, both of Missouri; and one grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one brother.

Anna L. Hartman
Hastings resident Anna L. (Tietjen) Hartman, 92, of 423 S. Hastings Ave. died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at her home.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings with the Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hartman was born March 27, 1908, to John and Matilda (Wolfe) Tietjen in Riverton. On Jan. 12, 1933, she married Elmer C. Hartman in Blue Hill. They farmed near Blue Hill until 1945 when they moved north of Hastings. She moved into Hastings in 1961. On Oct. 3, 1981, her husband died.
Survivors are four sons, James, Richard, Glen and Leon, all of Hastings; one stepsister, Marie Wert of Sanger, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Wayne.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Betty Palmer
Former area resident Betty (Bell) Palmer, 79, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., died Sunday, June 3, 2000, in Camp Verde, Ariz.
Private family services will be Friday in Camp Verde. Burial will be at a later date at the Valley of the Sun Cemetery in Chandler, Ariz. The remains were cremated. Westcott Funeral Home of Cottonwood, Ariz., is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Palmer was born Nov. 16, 1920, to Dave and Emma Bell in Iowa. She grew up in Red Cloud and graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1938. In September 1941, she married Kenneth A. Palmer. They lived in Clay Center until their retirement in 1983 when they moved to Sun Lakes. In July 1999, her husband died.
Survivors are two daughters, Barbara Aguilera of Mesa, Ariz., and Linda Swanson of Redlands, Calif.; one son, Gary of Camp Verde; one sister, Nancy Haddock of Vacaville, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Barney Lilienthal
Trenton resident Barney Lilienthal, 88, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Hamilton Manor Care Home in Aurora.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Trenton with the Rev. Don Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Trenton Cemetery. Herrmann Funeral Home of McCook is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are three daughters, including Genice Berns of Hastings; one son; one brother; one sister; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Lydia Gulzow
Hastings resident Lydia Gulzow, 90, of The Kensington died today at The Kensington.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Dennis D. Skinner
Hastings resident Dennis Dale Skinner, 50, of 409 Ringland Road died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Rathod officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
Mr. Skinner was born April 11, 1950, to Otha Dale and Doris L. (Beanblossom) Skinner in Davenport. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1969. In 1970 he moved to Hastings where he began working for Sidles Automotive. He then worked for Great Plains Chrysler in Hastings from 1974-78. On Sept. 11, 1976, he married Charla Colling in Hastings. From 1978-83 he worked for Paul Spady Motors in Hastings. He then returned to Sidles Automotive/Auto Value in Hastings where he was working as a salesman at the time of his death.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Stephen Ministry.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Kayla Skinner of Hastings; his mother of Hastings; and two sisters, Diane Blau of Davenport and Denise Snow of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by his father and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Walter J. Peterson
Hebron resident Walter J. Peterson, 79, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, in Edgar.
Services are 1 p.m. Sunday at Price Funeral Home chapel in Hebron with the Rev. John R. Walton officiating. Burial will be in Hubbell Cemetery in Republic County, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and two hours prior to services Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Peterson was born May 4, 1921, to Sophias and Jean (Cherry) Peterson in Narka, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married LulaBelle Whitley. She preceded him in death. He was a former employee of Bebba Construction and Rock Island Railroad. He also was a former employee of Day's Sanitation Co. and Green Thumb Program, both in Beatrice.
He was a member of the American Legion and VFW.
Survivors are two daughters, Alice Sherrill of Marysville, Kan., and Virginia Kleen of Alexandria; one sister, Dorothy Eisiamam of Paramount, Texas; one brother, Casper of Talur, Calif.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one sister; one brother; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Fund or American Heart Fund.

Alice M. Schlife
Hebron resident Alice Marie (Cox) Schlife, 77, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at St. Elizabeth's Health Care Center in Lincoln.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Hebron with the Rev. Warren Schoming officiating. Burial will be in the Chester City Cemetery. Hebron Memorial Funeral Home of Hebron is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Schlife was born Jan. 30, 1923, to Luke and Mildred (Lindholm) Cox in Daykin. She graduated from Hebron High School. She worked at Butternut Coffee in Omaha and later worked as a waitress. On Dec. 6, 1968, she married Casper "Cap" Schlife in Lincoln. They lived on the family farm near Chester. In 1998, her husband died.
She was a member of the Outlaw Car Club in Hebron.
Survivors are one son, Rodney Nelson of Hebron; one brother, Wayne of Lincoln; four sisters, Irene Ingles of Denver, Roberta McKay of Hebron, Beverly Stone of Mason City, Iowa, and Mildred Speth of Steele City; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
A memorial has been established.

Jack M. Geertz
Hebron resident Jack Marlin Geertz, 67, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, in Lincoln.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Church in Hebron with the Rev. John Walton officiating. Burial with military rites will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron. Hebron Memorial Funeral Home of Hebron is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Geertz was born Jan. 3, 1933, to Carl and Martha (Schroeder) Geertz near Alexandria. He worked as a mechanic in the Hebron area for most of his life. He was employed by Ken-Boy Motors in Hebron. On Oct. 2, 1956, he married Bonnie Ray in Fairbury.
He was a member of the Hebron VFW and Fairbury Eagles Lodge and a former member of the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Stan of Milford; one daughter, Martha Morton of Omaha; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
A memorial has been established.

Harold E. Armes
Hastings resident Harold E. Armes of 622 S. Baltimore Ave., died today at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
