Willa "Maxine" Duncan
Minden resident Willa "Maxine" (Podewitz) Duncan, 79, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at the Bethany Home in Minden.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Duncan was born July 31, 1920, to Henry and Maude (Doyle) Podewitz in Heartwell. She grew up in the Heartwell area and graduated from Minden High School. On Dec. 30, 1939, she married Eldon Duncan in Minden. They farmed in Franklin County until 1957 and then moved into Minden. She worked as a cook at the Kearney County Community Hospital in Minden for several years. In 1980 her husband died.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors are three sons, Vernon and Patrick, both of Franklin, and William of Minden; one daughter, Debra Twehous of Montrose, Colo.; three sisters, Joan Moore of Minden, Neva Johansen of Heartwell and Helen Petersen of California; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Douglas, and two sisters.
A memorial has been established in her name.
Duain T. Sigrist
Harvard resident Duain T. Sigrist, 92, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at Harvard Rest Haven in Harvard.
Rosary is 8 p.m. Sunday at Alberding Wilson Funeral Home Chapel and 9 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, both in Harvard. Services are 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Bernard Lorenz officiating. Burial will be in Harvard Cemetery.
Mr. Sigrist was born Nov. 22, 1907, to W.R. and Anna C. (Peterson) Sigrist in Henderson. On Dec. 30, 1931, he married Eileen M. Joyce. He farmed most of his life in Hamilton and Clay counties. They later moved to the Goldbeck Towers at Good Samaritan Village where they lived for 25 years. They moved to Harvard Rest Haven in March 1999.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harvard.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Betty Walker of Sacramento, Calif.; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the church or Harvard Rest Haven.
Glen W. Bantam
Orleans resident Glen W. Bantam, 87, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Orleans with the Rev. Dixon Powers officiating. Burial will be in the Orleans Cemetery. Nelson Funeral Home of Holdrege is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are his wife; four daughters, including Lela Fidler of Hastings; five sons; two brothers; one sister; 25 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Erma. E. Deterding
Hastings resident Erma E. (Plambeck) Deterding, 91, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wanda Zion Lutheran Church near Juniata with the Rev. Carl Rehwald officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Mrs. Deterding was born June 16, 1909, to Walter and Bertha (Roeder) Plambeck in Adams County. She attended Kenesaw High School and worked in Kansas City, Mo., for a short time. On Jan. 2, 1938, she married George J. Deterding in Corder, Mo. They lived in Yorkville, Ill., for seven years. In 1948 they moved to the Wanda area to farm until 1985 when they moved to Good Samaritan Village. On July 10, 1988, her husband died. She then moved to GSV Villa Grace.
She was a former member of the Wanda Zion Lutheran Church and a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings. She also was a member of Lutheran Women's Missionary League and Ladies Aid in Wanda.
Survivors are two daughters, Barbara Frazier of Lincoln and Patricia E. Peterson of Minden; one son, Wayne A. of Kearney; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be given to the Wanda Cemetery Fund.
Margaret H. McCune
Sutton resident Margaret H. (Tickler) McCune, 93, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Harvard with the Rev. Kathy Bullard officiating. Burial will be in the Clay Center Cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home in Harvard.
Mrs. McCune was born Sept. 18, 1906, to Henry and Mary (Hume) Tickler near Harvard. She graduated from Harvard High School in 1924. On March 3, 1925, she married Homer H. McCune. They farmed southeast of Inland. In 1942 they moved to Harvard where she worked at the Harvard Rest Haven until retirement. In 1976 her husband died.
She was a former member of the Inland Methodist Church and attended the Harvard United Methodist Church.
Survivors are two daughters, Doris Fisher of Sutton and Dorothy Figgins of Las Cruces, N.M.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter and three brothers.

Edna Stunkel
Hastings resident Edna Stunkel, 90, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace died Friday, July 7, 2000, at her home.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Donald Boeschen officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Polk. Visitation is one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Miss Stunkel was born June 29, 1910, to William Adolph and Antje (Menssen) Stunkel near Hordville. She attended parochial school. She moved with her parents to Polk in 1947. In 1974 she moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. In 1981 she lived with her sister in Hastings for nine years. She did volunteer work at Good Samaritan Village.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
Survivor is one sister, Marie Kruse of Hastings.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials may be given to the church.
Mary S. Vandeveer
Superior resident Mary Sophia (Epley) Perryman Vandeveer, 100, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Nelson.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Superior with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Sturdy officiating. Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Vandeveer was born Oct. 17, 1899, to George and Nettie (Smith) Epley near Elk Creek. She married Homer Perryman in 1918 and they later divorced. She worked as a waitress in Lincoln. In 1942 she married Lawrence Vandeveer. They lived in Superior. In 1975 her husband died.
Survivors are four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dayle; one brother; one sister; and one grandchild.
Donald C. 'Don' Johnson
Hastings resident Donald Charles "Don" Johnson, 71, of No. 7 Windsor Drive died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Private family burial will be in the Blue Hill Cemetery. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 7, 1928, to John C. and Marie A. (Kort) Johnson in Blue Hill. He graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1946. On Sept. 12, 1948, he married Wilma Maruska in Blue Hill. He worked in the grocery business with Swift and Co. and O.P. Skaggs. He worked for the Keebler Co. for 25 years and retired. In 1983 his wife died. On May 25, 1984, he married Ruth (Graver) Bowlds in Hastings. They spent four years building churches and houses throughout the country with Laborers for Christ. He returned to Hastings where he worked part time at Allen's of Hastings and delivered Meals on Wheels.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Tom of Lincoln and Gregg of Kearney; three stepsons, Dan Bowlds of Laurel, Md., and Steve Bowlds and Brad Bowlds, both of Lexington, Ky.; one daughter, Terri Wickham of Hastings; two stepdaughters, Allison Hale of Lexington, Ky., and Andria Blankenship of Fort Myers, Fla.; two brothers, Burdett of Hastings and Glen of Lincoln; and 24 grandchildren.
The family request no flowers. Memorials may be given to Laborers for Christ or the Student Fund for full-time church services at Concordia Colleges.
Harvin C. Borchers
Kenesaw resident Harvin Carl Borchers, 94, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in Wanda Zion Lutheran Cemetery in rural Juniata. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Borchers was born Dec. 24, 1905, to Henry and Mary (Jacobitz) Borchers in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings High School. On Dec. 20, 1931, he married Olinda Emilie Nienhueser in rural Juniata. He was a carpenter and builder for several years. He farmed in the Hastings area until the 1960s when he moved into Hastings. He retired in 1985. On April 26, 1985, his wife died. He lived at The Kensington in Hastings for several years.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings.
Survivors are two sons, Merle of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Alden of Carmichael, Calif.; two brothers, Willard of Minden and Raymond of Lincoln; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one son, Dale Eugene.

Opal Fritts Siegrist
Former Superior resident Opal (Good) Fritts Siegrist, 89, of Topeka, Kan., died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at a hospital in Topeka.
Graveside services are 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery in Superior with the Rev. Jon Albrecht officiating. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Fritts Siegrist was born Sept. 8, 1910, to Benjamin H. and Gertrude (Woodard) Good near Webber, Kan. In 1930 she married Floyd R. Aspegren and they later divorced. In 1950 she married Harry D. Fritts and he died April 5, 1968. She married Fred Siegrist in 1972 and he died in 1988. She lived in Superior for awhile and later moved to Topeka.
She was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge in Topeka.
Survivors are two sons, Eugene Aspegren of Topeka and Leonard Aspegren of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sisters, Ruby Ebsen of Superior, Peggy Moody of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., and Hazel Stone of Pittsburg, Kan.; one brother, Arthur Good of Olathe, Kan.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Betty Kent
Hastings resident Betty (Nixon) Kent, 76, of 603 West Lawn Ave. died Monday, July 10, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Private family services and burial will be Friday. There is no visitation or viewing. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Kent was born May 11, 1924, to John and LaVerne (Krell) Nixon in Otis, Colo. She moved with her family at an early age to Hastings and graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1942. On Jan. 8, 1955, she married Robert B. Kent in Yuma, Ariz. She worked at the family's D&A Root Beer Drive-In in Hastings for 29 years. The business was sold in 1958.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Suzy Cockson of Lincoln; three sons, John and Bill, both of Wichita, Kan., and Mark of Lincoln; one sister, Laura Ward of Des Moines, Iowa; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Memorials may be given to the Adams County Cancer Society or St. Francis Oncology Department in Grand Island.
Clarice V. Johnson
Former area resident Clarice V. (Keedle) Johnson, 83, of Safford, Ariz., died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, Colo.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Johnson was born Dec. 26, 1916, to George and Hilda (Johnson) Keedle. She grew up in Kearney County and attended Minden High School. She graduated from Hastings Beauty School and worked as a beautician at the Clark Hotel Beauty Shop in Hastings. On Jan. 18, 1947, she married Elmer D. Johnson. They lived in Hastings and Doniphan. After they retired, they lived in Arizona and Nebraska. In 1995 her husband died and she moved to Arizona.
Survivors are one daughter, Connie Shay of Safford; one sister, Leona Timm of Holstein; two brothers, Aljern of Indianapolis and Cletus of Kermit, Texas; and two grandchildren
She also was preceded in death by two sisters and one grandchild.
Karen M. Overton
Hastings resident Karen Marie (Demaray) Overton, 61, of 1504 W. Fifth St., died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Overton was born Feb. 17, 1939, to Samuel and Melva (Flowers) Demaray in Burr Oak, Kan. She graduated from Burr Oak High School. On Aug. 23, 1964, she married William F. Overton in Geneva. They moved from Geneva to Hastings in 1965. She was a custodian for Hastings Public Schools for 29 years.
She attended First United Methodist Church.
Survivors are her husband; and one brother, Ralph of Hastings.
She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the Diabetes Association.
Delores M. Sinsel
Former area resident Delores May Sinsel, 67, of El Paso, Texas, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, in El Paso.
Graveside services are 9 a.m. Saturday at Minden Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Friday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Miss Sinsel was born Aug. 29, 1932, to Albert and Nellie (Nabower) Sinsel in Minden. She attended District 8 country school and Minden Junior High School. She was married and then divorced. She then moved to Hastings for a short time and later to Ralston where she lived for several years. She worked as a waitress for most of her life, including at Maria’s Mexican restaurant in Ralston. In February she moved to El Paso.
Survivors are one brother, Donald of Minden; and three sisters, Eva Jean Keen of El Paso and Janet Hinrichs and Betty Yankten, both of Grand Island.
Irene G. Ramsey
Hastings resident Irene G. (Stromer) Ramsey, 87, of 721 S. First St., died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Kenesaw with the Rev. Terry Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the Kenesaw Cemetery. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.
Mrs. Ramsey was born March 11, 1913, to William J. and Louise (Bloomencamp) Stromer in Adams County. She grew up in the Glenvil area. She worked for the Foote family in Hastings for 13 years. On April 15, 1944, she married William L. Ramsey in Grand Island. They moved to Kenesaw. On Aug. 16, 1972, her husband died. She moved to Hastings in 1994.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Kenesaw where she was an elder and held other offices in the church. She taught Bible and Sunday schools in Kenesaw. She was a member of the Womens Group, Order of the Eastern Star and Entre-Naus and was a board member of the Kenesaw Senior Citizens. She also helped with 4-H in Kenesaw.
Survivors are one daughter, Sue Armstrong of Hastings; three sisters, Pearl Reiner of Lincoln and Grace Huren and Leona Augustine, both of Hastings; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Ralph H. Krebsbach
Lawrence resident Ralph Henry Krebsbach, 79, died Tuesday, July 12, 2000, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center in Grand Island.
Rosary is 3 p.m. and services are 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence with the Rev. Dennis Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery east of Lawrence. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Krebsbach was born June 10, 1921, to Joe and Mary (Grabenschroer) Krebsbach in Lawrence. On Jan. 5, 1944, he married Norma A. Herz. They farmed near Lawrence and later moved into Lawrence where he worked with his father at Joe’s Place. He became a building and land maintenance person for Sacred Heart Catholic Church, School and Cemetery. He later was an employee for the Lawrence Grain Co. until retirement. On Jan. 10, 1999, his wife died.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a past member of the Lawrence Fire Department.
Survivors are one son, Robert A. “Bob” of Grand Island; five sisters, Stephane Bolte and Irene Himmelberg, both of Lawrence, Sister Kathleen Krebsbach of Davenport, Iowa, Mary LaVern Herbek of Hastings and Helena Oye of Three Rivers, Mich.; two brothers, George of Taft, Calif., and Victor of Boston, Mass.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Larry; one brother; and one sister.
