Thomas J. Bucknell
Hastings resident Thomas J. "Tom" Bucknell, 63, of 1938 W. Eighth St. died Friday, Aug. 9, 1996, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Grand Island.
Graveside services with military rites are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens north of Hastings with the Rev. Steve Markle officiating. Butler-Volland Fun-eral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bucknell was born April 7, 1933, to Claude and Edna (Bourne) Bucknell in Jewell County, Kan. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School where he was back-to-back state gymnastics champion. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954-55. On June 23, 1956, he married Linda Salyard. He was in the fertilizer business. He later was supervisor warehouseman for Ace Hardware in Lincoln. He lived most of his life in Hastings and Lincoln.
He was a member of the VFW in Hastings and American Legion in Hardy.
Survivors are one daughter, Tami Pfeiffer of Lincoln; two sons, Tom and Ty, both of Lincoln; one brother, Chuck of Hastings; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Howard E. Good
Nelson resident Howard E. Good, 82, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996, in Superior.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson with the Rev. Royce Buchtel officiating. Burial will be in Nelson Cemetery at Nelson. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.
Mr. Good was born Feb. 26, 1914, to Frank and May (Koken) Good near Nelson. On June 27, 1938, he married Corrinne Oltmans in Mankato, Kan. They farmed near Nelson. They later moved into Nelson.
He was a member of Nelson Board of Education, Nuckolls County Fair Board, Farmers Co-op Elevator, oil boards, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service county committeeman, Masonic Lodge No. 70 of Nelson and the Scottish Rite and Tehama Temple, both of Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Barbara Hansen of Stanton, Sandra Anderson of Mesa, Ariz., and Kathleen Hubka of Beatrice; three sisters, Ruth Schneeflock of Novato, Calif., Dorothy Haszard of Eugene, Ore., and Mildred Eusted of Creswell, Ore.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Oliver E. Wendell
Juniata resident Oliver E. Wendell, 85, died Friday, Aug. 9, 1996, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace in Hastings.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Ted Uhlig officiating. Masonic rites will be provided by Hastings Lodge No. 50. Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery at Axtell. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Wendell was born Sept. 9, 1910, to Edward and Alma (Almquist) Wendell in Wilcox. He graduated from Minden High School and attended Hastings College. On Sept. 12, 1932, he married Esther H. Helms. They owned and operated Wendell Motor Co. in Hastings. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945-46. He also was a farmer. His wife died Aug. 21, 1974. On Sept. 30, 1975, he married Irene L. (Stamer) Uhrich. Wendell Drive at Lake Hastings was named for him.
He was a 62-year member of First United Methodist Church and a member of Hastings Masonic Lodge No. 50 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite, Tehama Temple, VFW and Knights of Pythias. He also was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and a past 50-year member of United Commercial Travelers.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Jane Brommer of Lincoln; two sisters, Adeline Lynn of Hastings and Marilyn Minter of Loveland, Colo.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Bethany Lutheran Church or St. Paul's Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery west of Glenvil.

Lois M. Heath
Geneva resident Lois M. Heath, 66, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 1996, at Geneva.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Geneva with the Rev. Dennis Linton-Hendrick officiating. Burial will be in Geneva Public Cemetery at Geneva. Visitation is today at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva.
Survivors are her husband, Dean B.; one son, Larry of Geneva; one brother, Lloyd Schelbitzki of Geneva; two sisters, Gladys Dittmer and Helen Dittmer, both of Bruning; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.

Kevin E. Brais
Hastings resident Kevin E. Brais, 19, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 1996, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at GSV All Saints Chapel with Bishop James Ruberson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Covina Hills, Calif. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home.
Mr. Brais was born Nov. 28, 1976, to Kevin Scott and Grace (Adsit) Brais in Pomona, Calif. He moved to Hastings 14 years ago. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in May.
He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints and Special Olympics.
Survivors are his mother, Grace Kempkes of Hastings; one sister, Michelle of Big Bear Lake, Calif.; one brother, Joshua of Hastings; grandparents, Robert and Laura Adsit of Polson, Mont.; and stepgrandparents, Romaine and Nita Kempkes of Campbell.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Margaret E. Rainforth
Doniphan resident Margaret E. Rainforth, 80, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996, at her home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rosedale United Methodist Church at Rosedale with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Mrs. Rainforth was born April 10, 1916, to Herbert and Beatrice (Webb) Mahurin in Brookfield, Mo. She attended school in Brookfield, Prosser and Rosedale. She graduated from Rosedale High School in 1934 and Mary Lanning School of Nursing in 1938. On Dec. 7, 1940, she married Maurice Rainforth in Worland, Wyo. They lived and farmed in the Rosedale area. Her husband died in 1979.
She was a 50-year member of Rosedale United Methodist Church, Rosedale United Methodist Women and Hastings China Belles. She and her husband served as sponsors of youth fellowship for a number of years.
Survivors are four sons, Dan, Steve and Len, all of Doniphan, and Dave of Lincoln; two brothers, Ed Mahurin of Gibbon and Mart Mahurin of Kansas City, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Memorials may be given to Rosedale United Methodist Church, Mary Lanning Hospice or American Diabetes Association.

Inez M. Potter
Hastings resident Inez M. (Carson) Potter, 80, of 510 Lane D died Saturday, Aug. 10, 1996, at Memorial Hospital in McPherson, Kan.
Memorial services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion Peace Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in McPherson Cemetery at McPherson. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Potter was born Feb. 6, 1916, to Curtis and Ada (Miller) Carson in Clarinda, Iowa. On June 12, 1937, she married Samuel G. Potter in Clarinda. She retired as a clerk from Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. in McPherson. In 1989 she and her husband moved to Hastings.
She was a member of Free Methodist Church in McPherson.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Ruth Land of Romoland, Calif.; two sons, Larry E. of McPherson and Richard S. of Windom, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Free Methodist Church or Central College, both in McPherson.

Harlow C. Gangwish
Hastings resident Harlow C. Gangwish, 78, of 835 Circle Q died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1996, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Tom Murray officiating. Burial will be in Juniata Cemetery at Juniata. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and until services Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Gangwish was born Dec. 29, 1917, to Earl and Nellie (Gish) Gangwish in Adams County. On Dec. 6, 1939, he married Annabelle Snell. He farmed near Juniata.
He was a member of Juniata Community Church, member and former manager of Knights of Pythias Club and a Golden Eagle 50-year member of the Eagles Lodge. He also served on Juniata Board of Education and was a volunteer fireman in Juniata.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Mary Lynn Gangwish of Waverly; two sons, Alvin and Ronald, both of Juniata; five sisters, Norma Wagner of Garden Grove, Calif., Beverly Coats and Marilyn Stromer, both of Juniata, Evelyn Berg of Hastings and Carolyn Cook of Lincoln; five brothers, LaVern of Casper, Wyo., Howard of Juniata, Richard of Joshua Tree, Calif., and Billie and Gerald, both of Hastings; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
A memorial has been established.

Esther A. Brownlee
Former Hastings resident Esther A. (Moore) Brownlee, 86, of Boise, Idaho, died Friday. Aug. 9, 1996, at her home.
Memorial services are 10 a.m. Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene in Boise. Private family burial was Tuesday at Cloverdale-Gibson Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens in Boise. Cloverdale Funeral Home of Boise is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Brownlee was born Jan. 6, 1910, to Herbert and Grace Moore near Alma. She attended school in Alma and attended business college in Hastings. On Aug. 26, 1934, she married Wilson Brownlee in Hastings. In 1941 they moved from Hastings to Reedley, Calif. They also lived in Redding, Calif., and Gridley, Calif., before moving to Sacramento, Calif., in 1974. In 1990 they moved to Boise. Her husband died in April.
Survivors are one son, Robert of Boise; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret Dunham.
Memorials may be given to First Church of the Nazarene or organization of the donor's choice.

Harry Brownlee
Former Hastings resident Harry Brownlee, 85, of Valley Center, Kan., died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, at Halstead Hospital in Halstead, Kan.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Valley Center. Burial will be in Kechi Cemetery at Kechi, Kan. Visitation is until 8:30 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Nutter Mortuary in Valley Center.
Mr. Brownlee was born Feb. 15, 1911, to Robert and Bertha (Ivison) Brownlee in Seaforth, Ontario, Can. On March 28, 1937, he married Merlyn Hughes in Hastings. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He owned the Gamble Store in Valley Center from 1949-1969. He later was a rural mail carrier.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Donald of Topeka, Kan., and David of Valley Center; one daughter, Mary Stout of Alvin, Texas; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church.

Irene C. Pine
Kenesaw resident Irene C. Pine, 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1996, at Haven Home in Kenesaw.
Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

John C. Blank
Franklin resident John C. Blank, 92, died Monday, Aug. 12, 1996, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Hutchins Funeral Home chapel in Franklin with the Rev. Richard L. Dimond officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Franklin. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Blank was born Sept. 1, 1903, to Thomas and Emma (Hauboldt) Blank on a farm north of Franklin. He attended School District 67 and Franklin High School. On Feb. 10, 1926, he married Lottie E. Schurman in Franklin County. A retired farmer, he lived his entire life on the farm where he was born. His wife died Oct. 28, 1990.
He was a member of Macon United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years. He served on School District 67 board for many years.
Survivors are one daughter, Peggy Hall of Brownsville, Texas; one son, Jack of Colorado; and five grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by two daughters, two brothers, three sisters and two grandchildren.

Paul C. Bruce
Former Nuckolls County resident Paul C. Bruce, 93, of Santa Monica, Calif., died Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996, in Santa Monica.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Community United Church of Christ in Nelson with the Revs. Royce Buchtel and Fred Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Nelson Cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.
Mr. Bruce was born March 29, 1903, to John William and Hattie Ellen (Leedy) Bruce near Nora.
Survivors are his wife, Lila; two sons, Robert Charles and John Paul, both of Santa Monica; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers; and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Burial will be in Nelson Cemetery at Nelson. Visitation is 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Aug. 23 at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.

Virgil L. R. Lewis
Former Superior resident Virgil Lee Roy Lewis, 66, of Lake Charles, La., died Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996, at a hospital in Moss Bluff, La.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Hardy Cemetery near Hardy with the Rev. Dale Bussinger officiating. Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lewis was born Feb. 7, 1930, in Mankato, Kan. He attended rural school near Superior.
Survivors are his wife, Eula Lee; two sisters, Ina Persinger of Superior and Verda Jones of Moss Bluff; and one brother, Albert of Kennewick, Wash.
He was preceded in death by three sisters.
A memorial has been established.

Woodrow Nelson
Former Hastings resident Woodrow "Woody" Nelson, 83, of Emeryville, Calif., died Monday, Aug. 12, 1996, at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, Calif.
Memorial services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Pleasant Hill, Calif. Burial is in Oakmont Cemetery at Lafayette, Calif. Oak Park Hills Chapel of Walnut Creek, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Nelson was born Dec. 13, 1912. He was a tire re-treader for Big G Foote Tire in Hastings for many years. He moved to Emeryville, Calif., from Hastings a year ago.
He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings and St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Pleasant Hill.
Survivors are his wife, Lucille; one daughter, Marilyn Nelson of Emeryville; one son, the Rev. Larry of Pleasant Hill; one sister, Laverne Rodine of Denver; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 3051 Putnam Blvd., Pleasant Hill, CA 94523.

Irene C. Pine
Kenesaw resident Irene C. (Allen) Pine, 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1996, at Haven Home of Kenesaw.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Friday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with Monsignor John J. McCabe officiating. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Pine was born April 8, 1914, to Edward and Rose Ann (Murray) Allen in Axtell. She moved to Hastings in the mid-1940s. She worked for Queen City Laundry.
She was a past member of the Eagles Club Auxiliary.
Survivors are two sisters, Rose Mary Edwards of Hastings and Marjorie Edwards of Wilkensburg, Pa.; and two brothers, Lawrence Allen of Hastings and John Allen of Peoria, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials may be given to Haven Home of Kenesaw, 100 W. Elm, Kenesaw, NE 68956.
