Erwin Albers
Minden resident Erwin Albers, 76, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at his home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Donald Becker officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Richard A. Fandry
Hastings resident Richard A. Fandry, 36, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Carl Utley officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Fandry was born May 6, 1964, to Randall A. and Gayle (Karlson) Fandry in Grand Island. He attended elementary school in McCook and then moved to Hastings where he graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1982. He attended college in Hastings, Colorado and Houston and had a degree in computer programming. He was employed by Great Plains Packaging Co. in Hastings at the time of his death.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and had participated in the Hastings Community Theater.
Survivors are his mother; and one sister, Mickie Baideme of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by his father; one brother; and four grandparents.
A memorial has been established.
Jack Stinson
Former Superior resident Jack Stinson, 67, of Lincoln died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Services are 1 p.m. Monday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln with the Rev. Dan Safarik officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Lincoln. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday with family present 2-4 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Stinson was born Oct. 6, 1932, to James and Ruth (Griffin) Stinson in Atlanta. He married Gladys Jacobsen. He served in the U.S. military during the Korean War. He was owner and operator of Stinson's Ace Hardware in Lincoln.
He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Lincoln, the Coast To Coast Advisory Council, Kiwanis Club of Lincoln-Lincoln Center, York Rite, Sesostris Shrine Temple, Jesters, Jaycees in Miami, Okla., and American Legion Club in Superior. He was past president of the Kiwanis Club and past exalted ruler of the Elks Club, both in Superior and a 32nd Degree Mason. He received the Premier Hardlines Dealer Award for seven years.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Mark of Lincoln and Kirk of Baltimore; two brothers, Clyde and James, both of Atlanta; one sister, Janice Conklin of Charleston, S.C.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be given to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
Roy S. Richter Jr.
Former area resident Roy Steven Richter Jr., 70, of Aurora, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at his home.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora with the Rev. Al Duminy officiating. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mr. Richter was born Sept. 28, 1929, to Roy Steven Sr. and Ruth Marie (Gosnell) Richter in Naponee. He grew up in the Republican Valley and graduated from Bloomington High School. On June 20, 1948, she married Jo Ann Hogeland in Bloomington. They lived in Naponee, Denver and Hutchinson, Kan., before returning to Bloomington. In 1966 they moved to Marquette and in 1980 they moved to Aurora. He owned and operated a trucking business for most of his life. On Feb. 1, 1983, his wife died. On Aug. 4, 1984, he married Peggy Ann Aye.
Survivors are his wife; five sons, Terry Richter, Rex Richter and Corey Goettsche, all of Aurora, Kim Richter of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Rick Richter of Wathena, Kan., and Corey Goettsche of Aurora; four daughters, Claudia Maska of Yankton, S.D., Trish Hoegh of Hampton, Lisa Reichardt of Aurora and Keri Goettsche of Grand Island; his mother of Republican City; 23 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by his father; one sister; two brothers; and one grandchild.
Donald R. Wieland
Former Blue Hill resident Donald R. Wieland, 77, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. Gerald Beltz officiating. Burial is 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. There will be no viewing.
Mr. Wieland was born Feb. 6, 1923, to Robert D. and Sophia (Maller) Wieland in Callaway. He grew up in Callaway and graduated from high school there in 1941. He attended Kearney State Teachers College. From 1942-46 he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. On July 8, 1944, he married Rita Rourke in Sioux Falls, S.D. He graduated from Creighton University School of Dentistry in Omaha in 1950. He practiced dentistry in Blue Hill for 35 years.
He was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association and the National Dental Association.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Stan of Castle Rock, Colo.; two daughters, Beth Pomeroy of Grand Island and Bebe McKenzie of Fremont; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Lawrence H. Versaw
Lincoln resident Lawrence H. Versaw, 60, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, in Lincoln.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church in Waverly with the Rev. Kenneth Hoover officiating. Burial with military rites by the Nebraska Army National Guard will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Lincoln. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Roper and Sons Funeral Home in Lincoln with family present 7-8:30 p.m. and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
Survivors are his wife; five daughters, including Karen Eckhoff of Franklin; two sons; his father, Harold of Franklin; five sisters, including Dianna R. Bislow of Franklin and Dorrene S. Wiedel of Minden; two brothers; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Cheryl L. Brown-Wheeler
Former Hastings resident Cheryl L. Brown-Wheeler, 41, of Fort Collins, Colo., died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Peace With Christ Lutheran Church in Fort Collins with the Rev. Wayne Koenig officiating and also 10 a.m. Aug. 11 at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be private with the family. Raeger Funeral Home of Fort Collins is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Brown-Wheeler was born Nov. 18, 1958, to Merle and Marlyce (Krueger) Brown in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1977 and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She lived in Greeley, Colo., for one year and moved to Omaha for three years. She moved to Lincoln for one year and then to Fort Collins where she has lived for 15 years. On Aug. 17, 1991, she married Don Wheeler in Hastings. She was a courier for Federal Express for 16 years.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings.
Survivors are her husband; one stepson, Matt Wheeler of Fort Collins; her parents of Hastings; one brother, Bruce Brown of Omaha; one sister, Lisa Bestol of Hastings; and her grandmother, Sarah Brown of Hastings.
Memorials may be given to Poudre Valley Hospital Foundation for the Oncology Unit in care of the funeral home, 1530 Riverside Ave., Fort Collins, CO 80524.
Carl R. Whitcomb
Hastings resident Carl R. Whitcomb, 86, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
Mr. Whitcomb was born Sept. 17, 1913, to C. Levi and Julia (Swanson) Whitcomb in Spring Ranch. He attended Prairie Rose District 4 school in Clay County and Pauline High School District 8 in Adams County. In the 1930s, he served in the U.S. National Guard as a supply sergeant in the Ambulance Corps, 110th Medical Regiment, Company F, 2nd Battalion in Hastings. On Dec. 2, 1939, he married Audrey Fate. He was a farmer on the family farm.
He was a former member of Pauline Methodist Church and a member of First United Methodist Church in Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Beverly Burchess of Lincoln and Carol Laux of Hastings; one sister, Bernice Catsinas of Lincoln; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Carl Dean, and two brothers.
Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Children’s Home in Omaha or the church.
Robert M. Dixon
Superior resident Robert M. Dixon, 73, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at his home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Lance Clay officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Dixon was born Nov. 30, 1926, to Virgil Talmage and Acena (George) Dixon in Bostwick. He attended Bostwick School through 10th grade and graduated from Superior High School in 1944. From 1944-46 he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific and Philippines. He held the rank of seaman first class when he was honorably discharged. On Nov. 4, 1949, he married Marcele Ruth Wilton. He was a shift repairman at Ideal Cement Plant in Superior for 22 years. On July 23, 1971, his wife died.
He was a life member of the VFW and received the Victory Medal.
Survivors are five daughters, Roberta M. Mohler of Superior, Ruth A. Mahieu of Ruskin, Susan K. Mohler of Missoula, Mont., Betty J. Dillon of Beloit, Kan., and Connie J. Dillon of Grand Island; two sons, Robert M. Jr. of Ruskin and James L. of Hardy; two sisters, Mary E. Messersmith of Superior and Carol Gerger of Hazelton, Idaho; one brother, Bill of Superior; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one brother; two sisters; and one grandchild.

Phillip O. Burd
Orleans resident Phillip Orvis Burd, 88, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church in Orleans with the Rev. Dixon Powers officiating. Burial will be in the Orleans Cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Mitchell Funeral Home in Orleans.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Trudi George of Nelson; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Cole E. Craig
Cole Erich Craig, infant son of Tim and Tammy Craig of Hastings, was stillborn Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Private graveside services were at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are his parents; two brothers, Blake and Austin, both of Hastings; one sister, Ashley Craig of Hastings; his grandparents, Harold and Marj Junker and Tom and Jenny Brown, all of Hastings; and his great-grandmothers, Helen Junker of Hastings, Betty Jurgens of Wymore and Mildred Niermeier of McCook.
He was preceded in death by one brother and his great-grandfathers.
Russel C. "Russ" Golgert
Hastings resident Russel C. "Russ" Golgert, 80, of 310 N. Cedar Ave. died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Carl Utley and the Rev. Matt Nieman officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today and Sunday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mr. Golgert was born July 30, 1920, to Charles and Mae (Thompkins) Golgert in rural Hansen. He attended school in Hansen and moved with his family at age 16 to Idaho. In the early 1940s he returned with his parents to a farm near Hastings. He farmed until 1944 and then moved to Loveland, Colo. On May 6, 1945, he married Erna Griess in Loveland. He was a truck driver for Denver/Loveland Transportation in Colorado. He and his wife moved to Hastings in 1956 where he farmed. He retired in 1985. He then worked in maintenance for 10 years at Alcott Elementary School in Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Ronald, of Hastings; one daughter, Susan Paschold, of Lincoln; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the children at Alcott Elementary School.
Paul Jacob Bender Jr.
Former area resident Paul Jacob Bender Jr., 47, of Elkhorn died Monday, July 31, 2000, at his home following a seven-month struggle with cancer.
Services were Thursday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn with the Rev. Mark Fry officiating. Burial was private for the family. Reichmuth Funeral Homes Inc. of Elkhorn was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bender was born Oct. 1, 1952, to Paul J. Sr. and Lodema O. Bender in Hastings. He grew up in Sutton and graduated from Sutton High School in 1970. He graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in biology and from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1977 with his doctor of medicine degree. On Sept. 21, 1977, he married Susan Ray Mumm in St. Paul, Minn. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology in 1981 at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minnesota and earned his certification. From 1981-82 he had a private practice in the St. Paul and Minneapolis area. He joined Midwest Medical Imaging Inc. in Omaha in 1982. He was a radiologist until retiring in January.
He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Evening Star Lodge No. 49, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Tangier Shrine, Nebraska Radiology Society, Radiological Society of North America, Immanuel Charitable Foundation and Theta Chi fraternity at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He earned the Eagle Scout award of the Order of the Arrow as a Boy Scout. He served as alternate councilor for American College of Radiology, president of the medical staff at Alegent Immanuel Medical Center and secretary of Elkhorn Legion Baseball Association.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Ann M. Bender of Columbia, S.C., and Laura E. Bender of Tucson, Ariz.; one son, Grant of Elkhorn; and two sisters, Claire Bender of
Rochester, Minn., and Lunda Miller of Sutton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be given to the church or Glen Eich Radiology Scholarship Fund at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha.
