John C. Holman
Hastings resident John Charles Holman, 87, of 508 Madden Road died Saturday, Sept. 2, 1995, at his home.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Wed-nesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ron Russell officiating. Burial will be in Park-view Cemetery.
Mr. Holman was born May 9, 1908, to James and Annie (Nims) Holman on a farm north of Humboldt. He attended schools in Humboldt and graduated from Bratton Union consolidated school in 1928. He graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln in 1932. On June 1, 1933, he married J. Estelle Butler of Pawnee City. He worked for the Pawnee Republican newspaper before moving to Grand Island in 1950. He worked for the Grand Island Independent for 27 years, retiring in 1974. He moved to Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; one son, D. James of Humboldt; one sister, Helen Sharp of Lincoln; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the YWCA of Hastings.

Carl A. Meyer
Campbell resident Carl A. Meyer, 82, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Campbell with the Revs. Kay E. Steddom and Lonnie Eschliman officiating. Burial with military rites provided by Willie Fierstein Post No. 169 of Campbell will be in Presbyterian Cemetery at Campbell. Campbell Funeral Home of Campbell is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Meyer was born March 27, 1913, to Christoph F. and Johanna (Harms) Meyer near Riverton. He attended school in Campbell and had various jobs, including working in gold mines, until joining the U.S. military in 1942. He retired as a master sergeant in 1963. He moved to Killeen, Texas, where he later retired. In 1944, he married Florence Marie James. He returned to Campbell in 1978 shortly after his wife's death. In April 1980, he married Helen M. Morgan. They lived in Campbell. He was mayor of Campbell until shortly before his death.
He was a member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church.
Survivors are his wife; two stepsons, DeLano Morgan of Auburn and J. Joe Morgan of Campbell; three stepdaughters, Dolores Herd of Portland, Ore., Betty Meyer of Campbell and Bonnie Preston of Holdrege; one sister, Amanda Knigge of South Dakota; 16 stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Westminister United Presbyterian Church or donor's choice.

Merl A. Brown
Hastings resident Merl A. Brown, 73, of 1411 W. Fourth St. died Monday, Sept. 4, 1995, at his home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery at Ayr. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Brown was born June 11, 1922, to Leonard and Jennie (Hill) Brown at Sharon, Kan. He grew up in White Water, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations. After his discharge, he moved to Wichita, Kan., where he was a mechanic. On Aug. 13, 1949, he married Twilda Valentine in Hastings. He continued to work as a mechanic, living in Clay Center, Superior and Roseland. They moved to Pauline in 1968 where he owned and operated a repair business. He retired in 1989 and moved to Hastings.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and DAV, both of Hastings, and the Blue Hill American Legion Post.
Survivors are his wife; four daughters, Bonnie Partridge of Hastings, Vickie Daniels of Independence, Mo., Sharon Brown-McIrvin of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Candy Jackson of Blue Hill; three sisters, Betty Wohlgemuth of Towanda, Kan., and Jean Aflague and Joan Tahut, both of Hastings; nine grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Marie C. Wiedel
Hebron resident Marie Cecelia Wiedel, 88, died Monday, Sept. 4, 1995, in Hebron.
Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Price Funeral Home chapel in Hebron. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hebron with the Rev. Patrick J. Lyons officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at Hebron. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and all day Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Wiedel was born Jan. 5, 1907, in Orleans.
Survivors are her husband, Louis; three brothers, Joseph "Joe" of Waterloo, Iowa, Paul of Lincoln and Carl of Kearney; and one sister, Doris Marie "Bertha" Fischbach of Frontenac, Minn.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Clarabel Adams
Superior resident Clarabel (Ebsen) Adams, 85, died Monday, Sept. 4, 1995, at her home.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Lester Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery north of Superior. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Adams was born Feb. 10, 1910, to William and Rosa (Lichtenberg) Ebsen in Bostwick. She attended Bostwick schools through the 11th grade and graduated from Superior High School in 1927. On March 2, 1932, she married Dale B. Adams at her parents' home in Bostwick. He died Feb. 13, 1970. She lived in Bostwick and Superior.
She was a member of Reformed Presbyterian Church of Superior (now closed) and many church organizations.
Survivors are two sons, Wayne of Superior and Max of Newman Grove; one sister, Mabel Davis of Superior; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Irene R. Grothaus
Franklin resident Irene Rosetta (Kindred) Grothaus, 82, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 1995, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Franklin with the Rev. Richard L. Dimond officiating. Graveside services are 3:30 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery at Smith Center, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin.
Mrs. Grothaus was born March 18, 1913, to William Wesley and Ina Frances (Bowman) Kindred on a farm in Yuma County, Colo. She moved with her family to Smith County, Kan., at an early age. She attended Pleasant Valley School in Smith County, Kan. On June 26, 1935, she married Orval E. Grothaus at her parents' home in Washington Township in Smith County. She was a caregiver at Carpenter Manor in Smith Center, Kan., for 10 years. She and her husband farmed north of Smith Center for many years. In 1992 they moved to Franklin.
She was affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Franklin Methodist Quilting Group and the Davenport Ladies Aid.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Avis Hayes of Naponee; one brother, Melvin Kindred of McMinnville, Ore.; one sister, Fern Sipp of McMinnville; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Ella L. Vannier
Former Hildreth resident Ella Lavina (Rosenthal) Vannier, 95, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 1995, at Bethany Home in Minden.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hildreth with the Rev. Dennis Reich officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Jelden-Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth.
Mrs. Vannier was born Oct. 6, 1899, to Albert and Minnie (Nagel) Rosenthal. She attended rural schools in Kearney County and graduated from Minden High School. She taught schools in Kearney County and Sherman County, Kan. On June 13, 1920, she married Henry G. Vannier. They farmed in the Hildreth and Wilcox areas until retiring in 1961. They moved into Hildreth. Her husband died in 1962.
She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for several years and served on the Church Library Board. She was an active member of Lutheran Church Women and was a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors are one son, Donald of Minden; one daughter, Delores Doran of Victorville, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two sisters and an infant son.

Marie B. Wall
Davenport resident Marie B. Wall, 86, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 1995, in Geneva.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ's Lutheran Church in Davenport with the Rev. Dennis Sylte officiating. Burial will be in Davenport City Cemetery. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva.
Survivors are one son, Raymond J. of Gibbon; two daughters, Viola Sole of Geneva and Carol Dannels of Kearney; one brother, Harold Meyer of Blue Springs, Mo.; one sister, Hattie Wulf of Guide Rock; and five grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Donna M. Scott
Hastings resident Donna M. (Flaherty) Scott, 75, of 1410 E. South St. No. 27 died Sunday, Sept. 17, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. John J. McCabe officiating. Private family burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
Mrs. Scott was born Oct. 25, 1919, to Daniel and Josephine (Chalfant) Flaherty in Blackbird. On Nov. 8, 1947, she married Walter J. Scott. She graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing at Creighton University in Omaha. She served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a nurse. She worked at United Hospital in Port Chester, N.Y., for many years. She later worked at Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains, N.Y. She moved to Hastings from Port Chester in June 1994. Her husband died in August 1994.
Survivors are one daughter, Barbara Scott of Hastings; and one brother, Francis Flaherty of Vallejo, Calif.
She also was preceded in death by a brother.

Maxine D. Eickmann
Hebron resident Maxine D. (Brumbaugh) Eickmann, 72, died Friday, Sept. 15, 1995, at Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva.

Russell B. McCormick
Former Hastings resident Russell Benedict McCormick, 87, of Mobile, Ala., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 1995, at a Mobile hospital.
Services were Aug. 29 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Mobile. Burial was in Mobile Memorial Gardens. Roche-Belmany-Herrington Funeral Home of Mobile was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. McCormick was born April 24, 1908, in Harrisonville, Ill. He served during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus No. 666 and VFW Post No. 49.
Survivors are his wife, Hazel M.; and two sisters, Rosemary Hood of St. Louis, Mo., and Alice Schmitz of Arnold, Mo.

Wilma E. Klahn
Minden resident Wilma E. (Jorgensen) Klahn, 76, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 1995, at Kearney County Community Hospital in Minden.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Minden with the Rev. Sam Simon officiating. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Klahn was born July 17, 1919, to W.D. and Evelyn (Hartley) Jorgensen in Norman. She grew up east of Minden and graduated from Minden High School in 1936. On Sept. 16, 1940, she married Theodore Klahn. They lived in Washington and California before moving to Minden in 1946. They farmed and lived east of Minden, moving into Minden in 1968.
She was a member of First Christian Church where she was active in its ladies' groups.
Survivors are her husband; two sons, Larry of Minden and Bernard of Salina, Kan.; one daughter, Kathleen Ayers of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Dorothy Haskell of Laguna Hills, Calif., and Shirley Norseen of Minden; one brother, Robert Jorgensen of Minden; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials may be given to First Christian Church or Bethany Home.

Harold 'Bob' Heuertz
Roseland resident Harold "Bob" Heuertz, 77, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Rosary is 8 p.m. Monday and services 10 a.m. Tuesday, both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Roseland with the Rev. Thomas Au officiating. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery near Roseland. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Heuertz was born July 21, 1918, to August and Adelaide (Beiriger) Heuertz in Juniata. He was a farmer. He later worked for the Adams County Department of Roads from 1957 until retiring.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 10155 of Roseland and Knights of Columbus Council No. 1023 of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Memorials may be given to the family.

John L. 'Jack' Roth
Hastings resident John L. "Jack" Roth, 69, of 611 S. Hastings Ave. died Friday, Sept. 15, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. today and Sunday at Brand-Wilson Mortuary in Hastings. Rosary is 7 p.m. Sunday at Brand-Wilson Mortuary chapel. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. John McCabe officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
Mr. Roth was born Aug. 6, 1926, to Francis and Flora (Cantwell) Roth Sr. in Hastings. He was a veteran of World War II. On Nov. 22, 1950, he married Doris Van Boening. He attended elementary school in Hastings and graduated from Hastings Senior High School. He attended Hastings College for one year. He worked for Smitty's Electric and for Lincoln Telephone, where he retired in 1985.
He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, the Elks Club and American Legion, all in Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Doris Roth of Omaha; three sons, DeWayne and Dennis, both of Lincoln, and Dwight of Hastings; one sister, Mary Roth of Aranndale, Va.; three brothers, Francis Jr. of Hastings, Thomas of Kearney and Richard of California; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia's building fund.

Eugene Chevalier
Former Franklin County resident Eugene Chevalier, 80, of Falls Church, Va., died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 1995, at his home.
Services were Aug. 26 at St. James' Catholic Church in Falls Church. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery at Falls Church. Murphy Falls Church Funeral Home of Falls Church was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Chevalier was born Dec. 2, 1914, to Hector and Lucille Chevalier in rural Franklin County. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in England and France. On Dec. 12, 1945, he married Gisele Carini in France. He completed his master's degree at UNL and then taught French and English at a junior college in Scottsbluff. He later moved to the Washington, D.C. area.
Survivors are his wife; three sons, Claude of Lexington, S.C., Dennis of Wellesley, Mass., and Jean Pierre of Annandale, Va.; one daughter, Janine Lee of Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters, Claire Hartman of Denver, Suzanne Landale of Aurora, Colo., and Janice Velkora of Geneva, Switzerland; three brothers, Rene of Kansas City, Mo., Paul of Wallace and Arthur of Culver City, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Catholic Charities of Northern Virginia, 3838 N. Cathedral Lane, Arlington, VA 22203.

Arvey Arnett
Hastings resident Arvey Arnett, 68, of 105-1/2 Kingston Drive died Sunday, Sept. 10, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services were Wednesday at Buffalo Memorial Funeral Home in Buffalo, Texas. Burial was in Wilson Chapel Cemetery at Freestone County, Texas. Butler-Volland Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Jean Linn
Former Superior resident Jean Linn, 76, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1995, at Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Nelson.
Services are 2:30 p.m. at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Joan Gaines officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery north of Superior. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Linn was born May 5, 1919, to Jack Jr. and Marguerite A. (Andrews) Fulton in Louisville, Ky. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Lincoln. She attended one year of college in Nebraska and attended one year at Iowa State Teachers College.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, United Presbyterian Women's Society and Pi sorority, Pledge to Alpha Omicron sorority. She was a past member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Chapter DS, P.E.O.
Survivors are two sons, John R. of Littleton, Colo., and James P. of Sandy, Utah; one half-brother, Ed Marrow of Lincoln; and one stepgrandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, Doug.

Dorothy R. Bell
Former Juniata resident Dorothy R. (Adams) Bell, 79, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1995, at Haven Home in Kenesaw.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Hastings Baptist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Tim Fleener officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Bell was born Feb. 23, 1916, to Ernest and Carrie (Chance) Adams in Edgar where she grew up. She graduated from Edgar High School. She attended college for one year and taught school before being married. On Jan. 1, 1938, she married Robert E. Bell. They lived in Oak before moving to Juniata. She was a homemaker. Her husband died Dec. 21, 1993.
She was a member of Juniata Community Church in Juniata where she was a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors are one son, Robert Bell of St. Helens, Ore.; two daughters, Sharon Jones of Hastings and Carla Weiler of Ayr; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a brother, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Irene M. Fussell
Hastings resident Irene May (Graham) Fussell, 96, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 1995, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace.
Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Geneva Public Cemetery at Geneva with the Rev. Charles Leypoldt officiating. There will be no visitation or viewing. Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Fussell was born June 4, 1899, to Edgar C. and May L. (Farrell) Graham in the Clear Creek farm home near Ansley. She moved with her family to Broken Bow. She attended Broken Bow schools. She received musical training at Wheatly School of Music in Lincoln. She returned to Broken Bow where she was a soloist at various churches. She later moved to Lincoln. In 1936, she married LeRoy Fussell of Geneva. They moved to Kansas, where he was a salesman. After her husband's death in 1947, she worked as a practical nurse for several years.
She also was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
