Archie R. Melvin
Edgar resident Archie R. Melvin, 91, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 1995, at Community Care in Edgar.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Urbauer-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Edgar with the Revs. Steve Marsh and Harold Fox officiating. Burial will be in Edgar Cemetery.
Mr. Melvin was born July 16, 1904, in Swanton. He was a lifelong resident of the Nelson, Edgar and Davenport areas. He was a longtime farmer, had a mail route between Oak and Nelson and was a butcher in Davenport. He married Ethel DeVore, who preceded him in death. On May 6, 1936, he married Ruby Skinner at Nelson.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Davenport.
Survivors are his wife; a son, Morris Skinner of Papillion; a sister, Vella Bauman of Nora; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by a daughter, an infant son, two sisters and two brothers.

LaVeda Placke
Hastings resident LaVeda (Thaut) Placke, 77, of 709 Circle B died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 1995 at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Richard Kothe officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
Mrs. Placke was born Aug. 2, 1918, to Fred and Marie (Adler) Thaut in Minatare. On Feb. 2, 1939, she married Ernest Placke. They owned and operated two cafes until the late 1950s. She was a department foreman at Dutton Lainson Co. for 20 years. Her husband died Feb. 19, 1992.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Survivors are one brother, Clarence Thaut of Hastings; two grandsons and one great-grandson.
She also was preceded in death by a son.
Memorials may be sent to the family.

Gladys R. Hoffman
Minden resident Gladys R. (Beall) Hoffman, 90, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 1995, in Huron, S.D.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Bill Jardine officiating. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Hoffman was born June 18, 1905, to A.M. and Mary (Etter) Beall in Richland Township in South Dakota.
She grew up near Cavour, S.D. She graduated from Huron Academy in Huron, S.D., and John Fletcher College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She married Kenneth Hoffman June 8, 1932. She taught school in South Dakota and Nebraska. The Hoffmans moved to Minden in 1947 and later owned and operated the Gambles-Skogmos store. They retired in 1973. Her husband died Feb. 1, 1995.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Minden and taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of the Minden Women's Club and was active as a volunteer in the community.
Survivors are one son, Rodney of Arvada, Colo.; two daughters, Ardyce Jensen of Huron, S.D., and Sharon Alonso of Axtell; four sisters, Mildred Kleinsasser of Huron, S.D., Lola Loudenslager of Turlock, Calif., Lois Hackbarth of Dows, Iowa, and Fern Knight of St. Augustine, Fla.

Hannah Overturf
Edgar resident Hannah (Harrison) Overturf, 85, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 1995, at Community Care of Edgar.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Urbauer-Williams Funeral Home in Edgar with the Rev. Al Parr officiating. Burial will be in Edgar Cemetery.
Mrs. Overturf was born Nov. 22, 1910, to Robert and Bertha (Yates) Harrison in Clay County. She married Max Overturf Feb. 2, 1931. They farmed in Clay County. Her husband died in 1974.
She was a member of Church of the Plains in Edgar.
Survivors are one daughter, Alberta White of Edgar; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Maxine Schlichtman.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Rose M. Boesen
Kenesaw resident Rose M. (Jensen) Boesen, 87, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 1995, at Haven Home in Kenesaw.

Chloe A. Ramsey
Chloe A. Ramsey, 5-day-old daughter of Matt and Angie (Gililland) Ramsey of Lincoln died Monday, Nov. 27, 1995 at Childrens Hospital in Omaha.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Grand Island. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her great-grandparents, Byron and Valda Alberts of Clay Center.

John W. 'Jack' Ashburn
Hastings resident John W. "Jack" Ashburn, 79, of Regency Retirement Residence died Thursday, Nov. 30, 1995, at his home.
Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leo M. Poisette
Hastings resident Leo M. Poisette, 72, of 107 E. 13th St. died Thursday, Nov. 2, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Rosary is 7 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with the Rev. John J. McCabe officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery.
Mr. Poisette was born March 18, 1923, to Oscar E. and Ellen O. (Mira) Poisette in Frontier County. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-1946 in the Europe and Pacific Theaters. On Jan. 31, 1970, he married Pauline Clvala in Hastings. He was retired from the Union Pacific Railroad.
He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, VFW and American Legion.
Survivors are his wife; and one sister, Margaret Brooks of Melbourne, Fla.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia's Renovation Fund.

Helen M. McDowell
Smith Center, Kan., resident Helen Margaret (Schalansky) McDowell, 92, died Friday, Nov. 3, 1995, at Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center.
Services were to be today at 10 a.m. at Simmons Mortuary chapel in Smith Center with the Rev. Rhett Totten officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Smith Center.
Mrs. McDowell was born Oct. 18, 1903, to Charles F. and Rosy (Petrasek) Schalansky in Osborne County, Kan. She married Glen McDowell. He died in 1976.
Survivors are seven daughters, Joyce Nelssen of Smith Center, Loretta Saunders of Hutchinson, Kan., Margaret May of Phillipsburg, Kan., Pauline Mockerman of Salina, Kan., Carol Baetz of Great Bend, Kan., Ellen Baetz of Enterprise, Utah, and Terry Shanley of San Antonio, Texas; three sons, Everett of Cairo, John of Bellaire, Kan., and Sam of Lebanon, Kan.; one sister, Berta Houser of Wilber; 37 grandchildren; and 65 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Glennis Jean.
Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Oscar C. Nuss
Sutton resident Oscar C. Nuss, 78, died Friday, Nov. 3, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services were to be at 2 p.m. today at Kohler Mortuary chapel in Sutton with the Rev. Dr. Warren Embree officiating. Burial was planned in the Sutton Cemetery.
Mr. Nuss was born June 7, 1917, to August and Lousie (Unterseher) Nuss on a farm north of Sutton in Fillmore County. He attended District 8 school. He was a farmhand for a number of years. He worked for the Naval Ammunition Depot at Hastings during World War II. He did various odd jobs in Sutton. He had been a resident at Sutton Community Home for the past year.
He was a past member of Hope Reformed Church in Sutton.
Survivors are two brothers, Edmund of Grand Island and Reinhold of Santa Cruz, Calif.
He was preceded in death by five sisters and eight brothers.
Memorials may be given to the Sutton Community Home.

John 'Jack' Barber
Clay Center resident John "Jack" Barber, 62, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Clay Center with the Rev. Jack Eske officiating. Burial with military rites provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Clay Center will be in Clay Center Cemetery. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Barber was born Dec. 9, 1932, to Charles H. and Beulah (Bunn) Barber in Concordia, Kan. He graduated from Concordia High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. In 1956, he moved to Clay Center. On Nov. 1, 1958, he married Judith Ann Hempey in Hastings. They lived in Clay Center. He drove trucks for various companies. He drove for T&L Irrigation of Hastings for the past 10 years.
He was a member of VFW Post No. 4678 and American Legion Post No. 87, both of Clay Center.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Jackie Byrkit of Nelson and Jill Rutt of Hastings; three sons, Jeff of Lincoln, Jim of Clay Center and Jon of Pleasant Dale; one sister, Francis Schumm of Hastings; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant twins.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Thomas C. Vaughan
Hastings resident Thomas Charles Vaughan, 69, of 926 N. Bellevue Ave. died Sunday, Nov. 5, 1995, at his home.
Memorial services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Cheryl Ann Elfond officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date. Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Vaughan was born Nov. 8, 1925, to Byron B. and Opal (Brookley) Vaughan in Le Mars, Iowa. In 1926, he moved with his family to Blue Hill. He graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1943. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in May 1944. He graduated from Hastings College in 1949. During his high school and college years, he worked with his father and brother publishing the Blue Hill Leader. On Aug. 9, 1952, he married Winifred Wright. In 1959 he purchased, along with his father and brother, Hyde Printing Co. They changed the name to Vaughans Printers Inc.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon, Elder and Trustee and was an usher for 35 years. He also was a member of Hastings Amateur Radio Club, Masonic Temple No. 317, Scottish Rite, Tehama Shrine, all of Hastings, and the American Legion Post of Blue Hill.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, David of Tokyo, Japan, and James of Omaha; one daughter, Katherine Vaughan of Lincoln; one brother, William of Hastings; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas Edward.
Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church - Stephen Ministry, Mary Lanning Hospice or Scottish Rite Clinic for Childhood Language Disorders.

Esther M. Snow
Former Adams County resident Esther M. (Lenz) Snow, 79, of Wintersville, Ohio, died Friday, Oct. 20, 1995, at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Services were Oct. 24 at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home in Wintersville with the Rev. Larry A. Draper officiating. Burial was in Fort Steuben Burial Estates at Wintersville.
Mrs. Snow was born Dec. 31, 1915, to John J. and Ollie A. (Kennedy) Lenz in Adams County. On Oct. 4, 1947, she married Clifton M. Snow. She graduated from Mary Lanning School of Nursing in Hastings. She was an instructor at Ohio Valley Hospital School of Nursing in Steubenville, Ohio, before retiring.
She was a member of Wintersville United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star LaBelle Chapter No. 414, Golden Sphinx Club of Steubenville and the Ladies Oriental Shrine in Columbus, Ohio.
Survivors are her husband; and one brother, Lloyd of Hastings.
Memorials may be given to Wintersville United Methodist Church memorial fund or Mary Lanning School of Nursing-Creighton campus or Church of the Nazarene, both of Hastings.

Florence Kindig
Former Adams County resident Florence (Holder) Kindig, 100, of Lancaster, Calif., died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 1995, in Lancaster.
Memorial services were to be at 1 p.m. today at Lancaster United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dr. J. Robert Stimmel and Dr. Kenneth Heflin officiating. Murphy Mortuary of Lancaster is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Kindig was born April 22, 1895, in Orleans. She married George Kindig. He preceded her in death. She moved to Antelope Valley in California in 1955.
She was a member of the Westside Club.
Survivors are one daughter, Beverly Kindig of Lancaster; two sons, Paul "Stan" of Lancaster and Eugene V. of New Jersey; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Antelope Valley Visiting Nurses and the Hospice Program, 43770 15th St., Lancaster, CA 93534.

Roy R. Lewis
Superior resident Roy R. Lewis, 92, died Monday, Nov. 6, 1995, at his home.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. L. Patterson Culligan officiating. Burial will be in Bostwick Cemetery at Bostwick. Visitation is until 4 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Lewis was born Dec. 28, 1902, to James Alvia and Lillie Mae (Davis) Lewis on a farm near Esbon, Kan. He attended Windy Point Elementary School and Northbranch Academy, both in Jewell County, Kan. On Dec. 4, 1927, he married Alta Shambaugh in rural Bostwick. He was a farmer, elevator manager, rural mail carrier and caretaker of Bostwick Cemetery for many years.
Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Dorothy Michaud of Lincoln, Mary Hoel of Loveland, Colo., and Jean Pester of Mullen; two sons, James R. of Wakeeney, Kan., and John of Loveland; one brother, Henry of Fort Morgan, Colo.; one sister, Lula Harris of Nauvoo, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Memorials may be sent to the family at 1444 N. Kansas Ave., Superior, NE 68978.

Louella O'Neal
Hebron resident Louella O'Neal, 89, died Monday, Nov. 6, 1995, in Hebron.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Hebron with the Rev. John R. Walton officiating. Burial will be in Chester City Cemetery at Chester. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at Price Funeral Home in Hebron.
Survivors are three sons, Harold and Robert, both of Hebron, and LeRoy of Marysville, Kan.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Christian Church.

Louise C. Jensen
Former Ruskin resident Louise C. (Andersen) Jensen, 84, died Monday, Nov. 6, 1995, at Parkview Haven in Deshler.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin with the Rev. Harold Laursen officiating. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery at Ruskin. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.
Mrs. Jensen was born March 2, 1911, to Niels Peters and Anna Marie (Nielsen) Andersen near Westby, Mont. She attended rural school in Montana. On Aug. 3, 1949, she married Alvin J. Jensen at Emmaues Lutheran Church in Westby.
She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church and its ALCW. She taught Sunday school and led and attended Bible studies.
Survivors are her husband of Parkview Haven; one daughter, Marietta L. Seggerman of Fairmont; one sister, Marie Andersen of Plentywood, Mont.; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Judith Jensen; one brother and one sister.

Judith A. Jacobsen
Hastings resident Judith A. (Mitchell) Jacobsen, 59, of 210 Kent St. died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dean F. Clausing officiating. Burial will be Monday at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Lincoln.
Mrs. Jacobsen was born Sept. 26, 1936, to Leo R. and Marvel (Allen) Mitchell in Neligh. On Oct. 1, 1953, she married Jerry L. Jacobsen in Lincoln. They lived in Hastings for the past 30 years. She was a ward secretary at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital for 25 years.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Survivors are her husband; two sons, Mike of Ruby and Pat of Hastings; one daughter, Jeri Schmidt of Hastings; one brother, Larry Mitchell of Loveland, Colo.; three grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Helen Geneva Gerlach
Hastings resident Helen Geneva (Brewer) Gerlach, 78, of 106 E. A St. died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Parkview Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Joe Scahill officiating. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Gerlach was born Feb. 18, 1917, to John and Hattie (Butler) Brewer in Newkirk, Okla. On Aug. 19, 1942, she married Arthur P. Gerlach. They moved to Hastings in 1943. Her husband died Nov. 15, 1985. She worked in sales at J.M. McDonald Co. and Herberger's for more than 30 years.
Survivors are two daughters, Paula Marr of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., and Melodee Sidlo of Littleton, Colo.; two sons, John of Salisbury, Md., and Monte of La Grange, Ill,; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by two sisters.
A memorial will be established.
