Doris Moncrief
Elwood resident Doris Moncrief, 78, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at the Elwood Care Center in Elwood.
Services were Friday at First United Methodist Church in Elwood with the Rev. Fred Andersen officiating. Burial was in the Elwood Cemetery. Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are one daughter, Jean Schendt of Lawrence; four stepdaughters; two sons, including Ken of Clay Center; one stepson; one sister; three brothers; six grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Cheryl L. Brown-Wheeler
Former Hastings resident Cheryl L. Brown-Wheeler, 41, of Fort Collins, Colo., died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Peace With Christ Lutheran Church in Fort Collins with the Rev. Wayne Koenig officiating and also 10 a.m. Aug. 11 at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be private with the family. Raeger Funeral Home of Fort Collins is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Brown-Wheeler was born Nov. 18, 1958, to Merle and Marlyce (Krueger) Brown in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1977 and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She lived in Greeley, Colo., for one year and moved to Omaha for three years. She moved to Lincoln for one year and then to Fort Collins where she has lived for 15 years. On Aug. 17, 1991, she married Don Wheeler in Hastings. She was a courier for Federal Express for 16 years.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings.
Survivors are her husband; one stepson, Matt Wheeler of Fort Collins; her parents of Hastings; one brother, Bruce Brown of Omaha; one sister, Lisa Bestol of Hastings; and her grandmother, Sarah Brown of Hastings.
Memorials may be given to Poudre Valley Hospital Foundation for the Oncology Unit in care of the funeral home, 1530 Riverside Ave., Fort Collins, CO 80524.
Carl R. Whitcomb
Hastings resident Carl R. Whitcomb, 86, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
Mr. Whitcomb was born Sept. 17, 1913, to C. Levi and Julia (Swanson) Whitcomb in Spring Ranch. He attended Prairie Rose District 4 school in Clay County and Pauline High School District 8 in Adams County. In the 1930s, he served in the U.S. National Guard as a supply sergeant in the Ambulance Corps, 110th Medical Regiment, Company F, 2nd Battalion in Hastings. On Dec. 2, 1939, he married Audrey Fate. He was a farmer on the family farm.
He was a former member of Pauline Methodist Church and a member of First United Methodist Church in Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Beverly Burchess of Lincoln and Carol Laux of Hastings; one sister, Bernice Catsinas of Lincoln; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Carl Dean, and two brothers.
Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Children’s Home in Omaha or the church.
Robert M. Dixon
Superior resident Robert M. Dixon, 73, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at his home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Lance Clay officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Dixon was born Nov. 30, 1926, to Virgil Talmage and Acena (George) Dixon in Bostwick. He attended Bostwick School through 10th grade and graduated from Superior High School in 1944. From 1944-46 he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific and Philippines. He held the rank of seaman first class when he was honorably discharged. On Nov. 4, 1949, he married Marcele Ruth Wilton. He was a shift repairman at Ideal Cement Plant in Superior for 22 years. On July 23, 1971, his wife died.
He was a life member of the VFW and received the Victory Medal.
Survivors are five daughters, Roberta M. Mohler of Superior, Ruth A. Mahieu of Ruskin, Susan K. Mohler of Missoula, Mont., Betty J. Dillon of Beloit, Kan., and Connie J. Dillon of Grand Island; two sons, Robert M. Jr. of Ruskin and James L. of Hardy; two sisters, Mary E. Messersmith of Superior and Carol Gerger of Hazelton, Idaho; one brother, Bill of Superior; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one brother; two sisters; and one grandchild.

Phillip O. Burd
Orleans resident Phillip Orvis Burd, 88, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church in Orleans with the Rev. Dixon Powers officiating. Burial will be in the Orleans Cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Mitchell Funeral Home in Orleans.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Trudi George of Nelson; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Cole E. Craig
Cole Erich Craig, infant son of Tim and Tammy Craig of Hastings, was stillborn Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Private graveside services were at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are his parents; two brothers, Blake and Austin, both of Hastings; one sister, Ashley Craig of Hastings; his grandparents, Harold and Marj Junker and Tom and Jenny Brown, all of Hastings; and his great-grandmothers, Helen Junker of Hastings, Betty Jurgens of Wymore and Mildred Niermeier of McCook.
He was preceded in death by one brother and his great-grandfathers.
Russel C. "Russ" Golgert
Hastings resident Russel C. "Russ" Golgert, 80, of 310 N. Cedar Ave. died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Carl Utley and the Rev. Matt Nieman officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today and Sunday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mr. Golgert was born July 30, 1920, to Charles and Mae (Thompkins) Golgert in rural Hansen. He attended school in Hansen and moved with his family at age 16 to Idaho. In the early 1940s he returned with his parents to a farm near Hastings. He farmed until 1944 and then moved to Loveland, Colo. On May 6, 1945, he married Erna Griess in Loveland. He was a truck driver for Denver/Loveland Transportation in Colorado. He and his wife moved to Hastings in 1956 where he farmed. He retired in 1985. He then worked in maintenance for 10 years at Alcott Elementary School in Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Ronald, of Hastings; one daughter, Susan Paschold, of Lincoln; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the children at Alcott Elementary School.
Paul Jacob Bender Jr.
Former area resident Paul Jacob Bender Jr., 47, of Elkhorn died Monday, July 31, 2000, at his home following a seven-month struggle with cancer.
Services were Thursday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn with the Rev. Mark Fry officiating. Burial was private for the family. Reichmuth Funeral Homes Inc. of Elkhorn was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bender was born Oct. 1, 1952, to Paul J. Sr. and Lodema O. Bender in Hastings. He grew up in Sutton and graduated from Sutton High School in 1970. He graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in biology and from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1977 with his doctor of medicine degree. On Sept. 21, 1977, he married Susan Ray Mumm in St. Paul, Minn. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology in 1981 at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minnesota and earned his certification. From 1981-82 he had a private practice in the St. Paul and Minneapolis area. He joined Midwest Medical Imaging Inc. in Omaha in 1982. He was a radiologist until retiring in January.
He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Evening Star Lodge No. 49, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Tangier Shrine, Nebraska Radiology Society, Radiological Society of North America, Immanuel Charitable Foundation and Theta Chi fraternity at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He earned the Eagle Scout award of the Order of the Arrow as a Boy Scout. He served as alternate councilor for American College of Radiology, president of the medical staff at Alegent Immanuel Medical Center and secretary of Elkhorn Legion Baseball Association.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Ann M. Bender of Columbia, S.C., and Laura E. Bender of Tucson, Ariz.; one son, Grant of Elkhorn; and two sisters, Claire Bender of
Rochester, Minn., and Lunda Miller of Sutton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be given to the church or Glen Eich Radiology Scholarship Fund at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha.
Laith L. Tomlin
Naponee resident Laith L. Tomlin, 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at Harlan County Hospital in Alma.
Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Naponee Cemetery in Naponee with the Rev. Duane Lauber officiating. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post No. 364 Hicks-Seigal. The remains were cremated. There is no visitation. Hutchins Funeral Home of Franklin is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Tomlin was born May 23, 1919, to Thomas and Mary (Lantis) Tomlin near Bloomington. He attended Woody school and graduated from Naponee High School in 1936. On July 3, 1942, he married Phyllis Schnuerle in El Paso, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45. He was a custodial supervisor at Kearney State College until his retirement in 1975. He lived in Kearney from 1969 until 1985 when he moved to Naponee.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 364 Hicks-Seigal in Naponee.
Survivors are his wife and one son, Gary of Toledo, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Cheryl Ann (Bierhaus) Guerrero
Grand Island resident Cheryl Ann (Bierhaus) Guerrero, 34, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, in Julesburg, Colo., as a result of an automobile accident.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. Herbert Schutte officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Survivors are her husband; three sons, including David Guerrero Jr. of Hastings; three daughters; her parents; one sister; two brothers; her grandmother; and one grandchild.
Helen (Huber) Griess
Sutton resident Helen (Huber) Griess, 90, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kohler Mortuary in Sutton with the Free German Reformed Salem Church elders officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery.
Mrs. Griess was born Jan. 21, 1910, to William and Lydia (Griess) Huber near Sutton. She attended rural country school in Clay County. On Oct. 16, 1933, she married Ruben E. Griess in Clay Center. They farmed north of Sutton until retiring and moving into Sutton in 1964. She worked with her husband in taking care of the Sutton Cemetery and also cleaned a bank for several years. On May 26, 1988, her husband died. She had been a resident of the
Sutton Community Home for the last eight months.
She was a member of the Free German Reformed Salem Church in Sutton.
Survivors are one daughter, Delores Lohman of Albuquerque, N.M.; one son, Donald of Sutton; three sisters, Hilda Schmidt, Emma Nuss and Esther Griess, all of Sutton; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one brother, one sister and one grandchild.

Evelyn Marie (Giermann) Weber
Hastings resident Evelyn Marie (Giermann) Weber, 86, of 1122 Circle L died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Community Care of America in Blue Hill.
There will be no services. The body was donated to the Nebraska Anatomical Board in Omaha. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Weber was born March 21, 1914, to Herman and Mathilda (Nehring) Giermann in Durbin, N.D. She married Ervin Weber. He preceded her in death.
Survivors are one sister, Anna Bohlmann of Casselton, N.D.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by one daughter and two brothers.
Kathryn Roland
Former Superior resident Kathryn E. (Swihart) Roland, 83, of Wichita, Kan., died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Wichita.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Mark Diehl officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Roland was born Oct. 22, 1916, to Jacob Fay and Nellie Grace (Marr) Swihart near Lovewell, Kan. She graduated from Mt. Hope Country School near Lovewell. She married Donald D. Coffman. On June 8, 1949, she married Merle L. Roland. They lived in Superior where she worked at Chard Drug Store, Mariska Photography and Roder's Grocery, and owned and operated Service Cleaners for several years. On Feb. 5, 1993, her husband died. She moved to Wichita in 1997.
She was a member of the Eagles and American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors are one daughter, Linda Hoshaw of Wichita; one son, Donald Coffman of Seaside, Ore.; one sister, Bernice Stratman of Fairfield; one brother, Burton of Huntington, W.Va.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Jack; one sister; and two brothers.

Lewis 'Ivan' Shaw
Former area resident Lewis "Ivan" Shaw, 98, of Aurora died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Church of the Plains in Edgar with the Rev. Rick Cepris officiating. Burial will be in the Edgar Cemetery. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Shaw was born April 4, 1902, to Lewis M. and Maude (Nesbitt) Shaw near Deweese. He attended Antioch School near Deweese, Deweese and Fairfield high schools. On March 10, 1926, he married Elsie Frances Jester. They farmed in the Fairfield and Edgar areas until 1964 when they moved into Edgar. On Feb. 28, 1989, his wife died. He had been a resident of Memorial Community Care in Aurora since March.
He was a member of Church of the Plains and a past member of the Fairfield Masonic lodge.
Survivors are one daughter, Twilia Harnett of Yampa, Colo.; two sons, Donald and Robert, both of Edgar; three sisters, Ivy Shreffler of Star, Idaho, Jenny Keeney of Wenatchee, Wash., and Artie Pomeroy of Othello, Wash.; two brothers, Everette of Edgar and Wesley of Broken Arrow, Okla.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Stephen D. Ford Jr.
Former Hastings resident Stephen D. Ford Jr., 85, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., died Monday, July 17, 2000, in Sun Lakes following a lengthy illness.
Services were private for the family. Lakeshore Mortuary of Mesa, Ariz., was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ford was born Dec. 6, 1914, to Stephen D. Sr. and Zillah (Freeman) Ford in Big Spring, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Betty J. Everett. He worked for Republic Natural Gas in Hugoton, Kan., and Stanolin Natural Gas in Tulsa, Okla. In 1951 he moved to Hastings where he was chief engineer for Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Co. He then became Kansas-Nebraska's vice president for production and gas supply. He retired in 1979 and moved to Arizona.
He was a former member of Meadowbrook and Lochland country clubs, both in Hastings. He also was a member of Masonic lodge and a life master of the American Contract Bridge League. He served on various community boards.
Survivors are his wife; three sons, Stephen of Tucson, Ariz., Drew of Santa Fe, N.M., and Kelly of Portland, Ore.; and two grandchildren.
Darrell Wester
Guide Rock resident Darrell Wester, 79, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at his home.
Services are 9:30 a.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. James Brackett officiating. Burial will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Saltville Cemetery in Mitchell County, Kan.
Mr. Wester was born Jan. 4, 1921, to Ferdinand and Bertha (Ruffner) Wester in Shelby County, Mo. He traveled in Lincoln County, Kan., to work harvest. On Dec. 25, 1942, he married Merna Lee Pruitt. They divorced in 1962. In 1989 he moved from Northbranch, Kan., to Guide Rock. He had worked as a farmer.
Survivors are two sons, Gene of Pasadena, Calif., and Steve of Beatrice; one sister, Mary Fifer of Shelbina, Mo.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one son, William Paul; five brothers; and one sister.
Brandt triplets
William Adolph Brandt, Caroline Meta Brandt and Wilbur Edwin Brandt, infant triplets of David and Lisa Brandt of Hastings, died shortly after birth on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Private services are Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are their parents; four grandparents, Ray and Joyce Brandt of Hastings and Lloyd and Lois Clagett of Lincoln; and three great-grandparents, Leona Jordening of Corning, Iowa, Vera Priess of Lincoln and Mary Clagett of Blue Hill.
A memorial fund will be established.
Martha S. Hauptmeier
Overton resident Martha Sophie (Rathe) Hauptmeier, 97, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at St. John's Center in Kearney.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington with the Rev. Edwin Cook officiating. Burial will be in the Overton Cemetery. Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today at Overton Funeral Home in Overton. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home of Lexington is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are three sons, including Arlynn of Bladen; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
