Hedwig 'Hattie' S. Bank
Hastings resident Hedwig "Hattie" S. Bank, 85, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 1996, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Richard Kothe officiating. Burial is in Blue Hill Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Mortuary.
Miss Bank was born Jan. 16, 1911, to Gustav and Emelia (Waterman) Bank in Blue Hill. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Hill. She moved to Hastings in 1960. She was a housekeeper at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Survivors are a half sister, Vera Schmidt of Grinnell, Iowa; and a half brother, Ervin Mitzelfelt of Hastings.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, one half sister and one half brother.
Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church.
Carl A. During
Former Hastings resident Carl A. During, 70, of Talmage died Friday, Aug. 2, 1996, at his home.
Memorial services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Talmage Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage with the Rev. William Dressen officiating. Burial with military rites by Bryan Holgrewe American Legion Post 246 color guard of Talmage is at St. Paul's Cemetery in Talmage. There will be no public visitation. The body was cremated. Peterson Mortuary in Nebraska City was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. During was born Sept. 5, 1925, to Alfie Carl and Evah Adeline (Holtzman) During in Holdrege. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46. He served during World War II in the Philippines as a Baker Third Class on the USS John Land. On May 3, 1947, he married Betty Jane Lockhart. They lived in the Holdrege area for many years. His wife died in 1972. On Nov. 27, 1974, he married Darlene Mae Feeser in Juniata. They lived in the Hastings and Grand Island areas. He was a groundskeeper at Grand Island Senior High School. He retired in 1989, and he and his wife moved to Talmage.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Grand Island.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Linda Winkelhake of Dunbar; one brother, Leroy During of Omaha, one sister, Delores Paccaro of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha oncology unit.
Edna M. Heinrichs
Edgar resident Edna May (Hawkins) Heinrichs, 94, died Monday, Aug. 5, 1996, at Community Care of Edgar.
Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home chapel in Edgar with the Rev. Al Parr officiating. Burial will be in Edgar Cemetery.
Mrs. Heinrichs was born Aug. 29, 1901, to Ira and Effie (Milton) Hawkins at Davenport. She attended school in the Davenport area. On Oct. 3, 1920, she married William J. Heinrichs at Davenport. He preceded her in death. She worked 15 years at three grocery stores in Edgar.
She was a member of the Church of the Plains, Extension Club, Women's Club and Ladies Aid, all of Edgar.
Survivors are one daughter, Wanda Ray of Urbandale, Iowa; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two daughters, Romona Price and Twila Nelson.
Gordon T. Jones
Former Blue Hill resident Gordon T. Jones, 64, of Grand Junction, Colo., died Sunday, Aug. 4, 1996, at Steamboat Lake near Steamboat Springs, Colo.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary chapel in Grand Junction with family members officiating. The remains were cremated.
Mr. Jones was born Oct. 25, 1931, to Aaron Thomas and Hazel (Richeson) Jones in Hastings. He grew up in Pauline and graduated from Blue Hill High School. On Aug. 8, 1953, he married Donna L. Brumfield at Denver. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was an engineer for U.S. West, retiring after 30 years. He had lived in Grand Junction since 1969.
He was a member of U.S. West Pioneers.
Survivors are his wife of Grand Junction; two sons, Steven of Denver and David of Grand Junction; two daughters, Debra Gracie of Grand Junction and Geri Johnson of Carthage, Texas; a brother, Melvin of Las Vegas; and a sister, Margaret Fishel of Hastings; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Jerry V. Chisholm
Former Franklin County resident Jerry V. Chisholm, 56, of Ridgecrest, Calif., died Monday, Aug. 5, 1996, at Ridgecrest Community Hospital in Ridgecrest.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Bloomington with the Rev. R. L. Malchow officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin. Visitation is 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin and 1 p.m. until service time at the church.
Mr. Chisholm was born Nov. 7, 1939, to Clifford and Hazel (Wilson) Chisholm at Bloomington. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1957. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1957 and returned to Franklin in 1962. He worked for Gartin's Grocery. After a short time, he rejoined the Navy and retired in 1983 as a yeoman. He became a housing assistant in the Naval Weapons Center in China Lake, Calif. On Dec. 8, 1972, he married Yvonne Loughran in Columbus. They moved to Ridgecrest in 1979.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion, both of Ridgecrest.
Survivors are his wife; three sons, Douglas of San Diego; Scott and J. Alan, both of Newton, Iowa; two daughters, Debra Moorman of Baxter, Iowa, and Kelly Chisholm of Newton; one step-daughter, Jeanne Donahue of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Vivian Cook of Kearney and Jean Stolarz of Sylmar, Calif.; two brothers, Victor of Union Grove, Wis., and Van of College Station, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Mary V. Roeder
Former Kenesaw resident Mary V. Roeder, 83, of Oxford, Ohio, died Monday, July 29, 1996, at Oxford View Nursing Home in Oxford.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Kenesaw with the Rev. Beverly Minor officiating. The remains were cremated. Private burial will be at Kenesaw Cemetery. The guest book can be signed from 9 am. to 9 p.m. Friday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.
Mrs. Roeder was born Oct. 12, 1912, to Frank and Dora (Barnes) Rutherford in Omaha. She attended school in Hastings and graduated from Hastings College in 1933 with a degree in elementary education. She taught in a one-room school house near Holstein. She moved to Kenesaw in 1938. On May 6, 1941, she married Herbert Roeder in Kansas. She taught in Kenesaw Public School for 25 years, retiring in 1973. Her husband died Oct. 7, 1965. She moved to Ohio in 1992. She was active in Hastings College Alumni Association for many years.
She was a member of United Methodist Church of Kenesaw and Read-More.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet; one son, Kenneth; and two sisters.
Survivors are one daughter, Mary Kay Allen of Oxford, Ohio; one brother, T.A. Rutherford of Tyler, Texas; and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to Kenesaw Public School Foundation Scholarship Fund.
Dennis M. Basart
Mankato, Kan., resident Dennis M. Basart, 57, died Monday, Aug. 5, 1996, at his home in Mankato.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Christian Church in Mankato with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial with military rites provided by VFW Post No. 7830 in Mankato will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation is until service time at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.
Mr. Basart was born Sept. 13, 1938, to Oliver Roy and Lillian Blanch (Miller) Basart in Jewell County, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960-1966. He was postmaster of the Mankato Post Office. He had operated a wrecker service and salvage yard in Mankato.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his wife, Marie; one daughter, Kristi Davis of Hays, Kan.; one son, Justin W. of Burr Oak, Kan.; his mother Mankato; and one sister, Judy Shaddock of Topeka, Kan.
Memorials may be given to Christian Church of Mankato.

Allen Clark Hamsher
Former Hastings resident Allen Clark Hamsher, 38, of Los Angeles died Friday, Aug. 2, 1996, at the Chris Brownlie Hospice in Los Angeles. The cause of death was AIDS-related.
Services will be 11 a.m. Aug. 15 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, Calif., with the Rev. Timothy Stafford officiating. The remains were cremated. Turner and Stevens-C. Lewis Edwards Mortuary of Pasadena is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hamsher was born Oct. 22, 1957, to Bill and Devota Hamsher at Independence, Kan. At an early age, he moved with his parents to Hastings. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1975. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and majored in music (piano and voice). He had been living in Los Angeles for 10 years.
He was secretary of the Church of Religious Science in Pomona.
Survivors are his parents of Hays Kan.; two sisters, Ceretha and Jolene, both of Hays; and a brother, Gary of Denver.

Former Kenesaw resident Donna Rae (Koepp) Beberniss, 58, of Wood River died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 1995, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Wood River with the Rev. Daniel Knief officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery at Grand Island. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Mrs. Beberniss was born Sept. 21, 1937, to Albert Jr. and Grace (Tjaden) Koepp near Kenesaw. She attended School District 24 north of Wood River and graduated from Wood River High School. On June 16, 1957, she married Leonard L. Beberniss in Wood River. They farmed north of Wood River. Her husband died March 3, 1986.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Wood River American Legion Auxiliary, Wood River VFW Auxiliary and Platt-Duetsche Society of Grand Island.
She is survived by her mother of Wood River.
She also was preceded in death by her father.

John W. 'Jack' Ashburn
Hastings resident John Wesley "Jack" Ashburn, 79, of the Regency Retirement Residence died Thursday, Nov. 30, 1995, at his home.
Rosary is 7:30 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church with the Rev. David F. Bourek officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cem-etery.
Mr. Ashburn was born Nov. 26, 1916, to John and Maud (Rounds) Ashburn in Tilden. He graduated from Tilden High School. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he lettered in football in 1938 and 1939. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-45 during World War II. He flew 33 missions from England to Germany. He received the Air Medal and four Oak Leaf Clusters. On Aug. 10, 1946, he married Frances Oelsligle in Denver. In 1947, they moved to Hastings from Lincoln. He was employed by Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co. for 32 years and retired as senior engineer. His wife died Aug. 15, 1991.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus, YMCA, Lochland Country Club and Kiwanis, of which he was treasurer. He also was a member of the University of Nebraska Alumni Association and N Club, both in Lincoln. He was a scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop No. 125 for many years and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.
Survivors are one daughter, Kay Sutaria of New York; three sons, Tom of Aurora, Colo., Bill of Lincoln and James of Hastings; and three grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia High School Endowment Fund or the University of Nebraska Foundation.
Margaret Lennemann
Phillipsburg, Kan., resident Margaret Lennemann, 91, of Phillips County Retirement Center died Thursday, Nov. 30, 1995, at Phillips County Hospital.
Rosary is 7 p.m. today and services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Alma. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Orleans. Banta-Torrey Funeral Home of Alma is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are one son; two daughters, including Joan Elley of Hastings; one brother; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Ralph E. Engel
Former Hastings resident Ralph E. Engel, 80, of North Brunswick, N.J., died Thursday, Dec. 7, 1995, at his home.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Tecumseh Cemetery at Tecumseh. A memorial service in New Brunswick, N.J., will be at a later date. Selover Funeral Home of North Brunswick and Wherry Brothers Mortuary of Tecumseh are in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Engel was born Aug. 31, 1915, to Emil B. and Nellie A. (Brittan) Engel in Doniphan. He graduated from Hastings College with a bachelor of arts degree, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a master of science degree and Rutgers University in New Brunswick with a doctorate degree. He served as a physicist with the Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., for three years before joining the faculty at Rutgers University in 1947. He taught and did research as an agronomist in turfgrass science. He also served as a Cooperative Extension Specialist. He retired from Rutgers University after 39 years in 1986. He continued to lecture in continuing education at Cook College of Rutgers University until this fall.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in New Brunswick where he served as deacon and elder. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and served on the Board of Directors of the International Turfgrass Association. He received many awards, including the Distinguished Service Award of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the United State Golf Association Green Section Award for distinguished service to golf, the Distinguished Service Award of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of New Jersey, the Dedicated Service Award from the Turfgrass Class of 1990 and the Turfgrass Alumni Association Achievement Award. He served for many years as advisor to the New Jersey State Golf Association.
Survivors are wife, Margaret Ellen (Jobes); one son, Rayme E. of Houston, Texas; four brothers, Raymond of Wood River, Marion of Ajo, Ariz., Louis of Doniphan and Robert of Grand Island; one sister, Erma Newth of Venango; and two grandchildren.

Hastings resident Gladys S. (Mues) Dickerson, 64, died Friday, Dec. 8, 1995, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home with the Rev. W.C. Westman officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
Mrs. Dickerson was born Feb. 4, 1931, to Henry E. and Louisa (Brinkman) Mues in Arapahoe. She graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1949. She graduated from Mary Lanning Memorial School of Nursing in 1952. On April 26, 1955, she married Richard "Dick" Dickerson. She was a registered nurse at Hastings Regional Center and Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital and in the office of Dr. Gerald Kuehn.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital Nurses Alumni Association.
Survivors are her husband; one son, Jon of Hastings; and one grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the Adams County Heart Association.
Alma L. Funk
Hebron resident Alma L. Funk, 98, died Friday, Dec. 8, 1995, in Hebron.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Hebron with John R. Walton officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery at Clyde, Kan. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at Price Funeral Home in Hebron.
Mrs. Funk was born Feb. 27, 1897, in Paris, Mo.
Survivors are one stepdaughter, Marthena Vass of Salina, Kan.; one sister, Ola E. Fortney of Loveland, Colo.; six stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
