Damon R. Scarrow, 32 (1972-2004)
Damon R. Scarrow, 32, of Cozad, Nebraska, died in Gothenburg, Nebraska, on Tuesday, June 1, 2004. He was born April 22, 1972, to Donald R. Scarrow and Gaylene L. (Wagner) Scarrow at Cozad.
He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1990 and went on to attend Wyoming Tech, for auto body, in Laramie, Wyoming, and graduated in June of 1991.
He worked at Parker Tech (formerly Goshen Rubber Co.) for the past ten years. He was a big fan of race car driving. He built and drove his own stock car as well as helping others work on theirs. He loved football and was a Broncos and Huskers fan, as well as an avid hunter. Damon loved spending time with friends and family and with the little ones.
Survivors include his mother, Gaylene Scarrow of Gothenburg; his father, Donald Scarrow of Otis, Colorado; one son, Carrick of Cozad; one daughter, Kristin of Cozad; his fiance, Amy and her son Tyler Werner of Cozad; one sister, Karla (Kelly) Smith of Cozad and children Katlin, Chance, Lane, Jordan and Jacey; one brother, Shawn (Lorrie) Scarrow of Brady and children Michelle, Tyler and Shaunna; his grandmother, Anna May Scarrow; aunts and uncles, Lorin and Carol Wagner and families, Jerry and Jean Patterson and families, Leon and Karen Wagner and families, Lawrence and Mary Scarrow, JoAnn and Floyd Witte, Velda and Gerald Mann, Ervin Scarrow, Earl and Sandy Scarrow, Vern and Ellen Scarrow, Ernie and Shirley Scarrow, Marvin Scarrow, Evelyn Scarrow, families; and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Erwin Scarrow, Clyde and Elinor Wagner; and a niece, Kelsey Smith.
Memorial services were held Friday, June 4, 2004, at 3 p.m. at Blase Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, with Pastor Larry Viter officiating. The family will scatter the ashes at a later date.

Sierra Berryman Havenhill (2001-2004)
Sierra Berryman Havenhill, three-year-old daughter of Cherease Berryman Havenhill and Dennis Havenhill, died June 3, 2004, at the Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado.
Other survivors include a brother, Ashton; grandparents, Jim and Gayle Berryman of Aurora, Colorado; and great-grandparents, Harley and Emabel Berryman of Cozad, Nebraska, and Richard Thornton of Cozad.
A memorial has been established in her memory.
Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 7, 2004, at the Walnut Grove Cemetery, north of Cozad.

Fay A. DeLap, age 84 (1919-2004)
Fay A. DeLap, 84, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. She was born November 26, 1919, at Linwood, Nebraska, to Earl B. and May (Tichacek) Cranford.
Fay moved as a sophomore in high school to Lexington. She graduated from Lexington High School with the Class of 1937. Following graduation, she helped take care of her two brothers and one sister. She was united in marriage to Donald DeLap on January 26, 1945, at Lexington. Two sons were born to this union, Morry and Merril. Following the couple's marriage, they moved to the farm west of Lexington where they lived until recently moving to Plum Creek Care Center.
Fay enjoyed doing yard work, gardening and canning, making candles, she loved growing iris and was a member of the Iris Society. A hobby that Fay especially enjoyed was photography. When her boys were young the couple enjoyed attending their football and baseball games. When her grandsons were young she enjoyed babysitting and taking care of them. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 60+ years where she taught Sunday School and enjoyed attending Bible Study. Fay will be truly missed by her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Donald DeLap of Lexington; two sons, Morry and Marlene DeLap of Lexington and Merril DeLap of Harvard, Nebraska; one brother, David Cranford of Lexington; and two grandsons, Corey DeLap of St. Louis, Missouri, and Dirk DeLap of Lexington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Matthew; one brother, Dick; and one sister, Phyllis.
Services were held Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Lexington with Rev. Caroline Vickery officiating
Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.

Abe Jacob, age 79 (1925-2004)
Abe Jacob, age 79 of Willow Island, Nebraska, died June 4, 2004, at the Cozad Hospital. He was born March 1, 1925, at Kearney, Nebraska, to John and Selma Zamel Jacob.
At a young age, he moved with his parents to a farm site at Willow Island. He graduated from Cozad High School in 1943. He worked on the family farm until entering the U. S. Army, serving from 1950 to 1952. Following his discharge, he returned to the family farm where he remained active the remainder of his life.
He was a member of the Gothenburg American Legion Post and the Cozad Elks Lodge. During his lifetime, he was known for his generosity to family and friends.
Survivors include a brother, Robert (Shirley) of Casper, Wyoming; three sisters, Hazel Korrey of Iliff, Colorado, Lena (Vern) Yanney of North Platte, Nebraska, and Carolyn (Norm) Keech of Overland Park, Kansas; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Jacob of Cozad.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Jacob; and five brothers, Edward, Milford, Joseph, Sam and Charles.
A memorial has been established in his memory.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Cozad with Rev. Lyle Schoen officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

John "Jack" Kearney, 84 (1919-2004)
John "Jack" Kearney, 84, of Overton, Nebraska, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington, Nebraska. He was born August 15, 1919, in Kearney, Nebraska, to John and Anna (Ripp) Kearney.
He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Lexington High School in 1938. After high school he joined the Army. He was honorable discharged in 1945. On June 17, 1947, he married Marjorie Naprstek in Elm Creek, Nebraska. They raised their family on the Kearney farm where Jack resided until his death.
He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, District 6 school board for over 20 years, Plum Creekers and VFW. He enjoyed working at the sale barn, riding horses, and his dogs. He was a good neighbor and always liked to visit with them.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marjorie of Overton; two sons, John Kearney of Overton and David and Paula Kearney of Overton; three daughters, Ann Larson of Lexington, Margaret Kearney of Overton, and Mary Frances Simmerman and husband Mike of Murray, Nebraska; a sister: Kt. Bourn of Overton; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandsons, Adam and Alec; sisters, Mary, Peg, and Phyllis; and brother, Mick.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Overton with Father Mark Maresh officiating.
Burial was in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery in Lexington. Wake service were held Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Overton.

Genise Hoffman, age 80 (1924-2004)
Genise Hoffman, age 80 of Cozad, Nebraska, died June 8, 2004, at the Cozad Hospital.
She was born January 11, 1924, at Grant, Nebraska, to Russell and Ethel Winn Sexson. She graduated from Perkins County High School at Grant in 1941.
On March 20, 1946, she married Wayne Hoffman at Grant. In 1950, the couple moved to Cozad where they were employed at Sullivan's Department Store. In 1951, they purchased the shoe department of Sullivan's and operated Wayne's Shoe Store until 1986, when their son purchased the business. After retiring, the couple enjoyed winters in Green Valley, Arizona.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was active in the church choir, bell choir, a variety of church committees and volunteered at the church Thrift Shop for 18 years. She enjoyed golfing and had been a member of the Cozad Country Club. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne of Cozad; a daughter, Mary (Ken) George of Kearney, Nebraska; two sons, Steve (Mariellen) of Aurora, Colorado, and Tom (Patty) of Ankeny, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Kristi (Matt) Oltman, Erin, Adam and John Hoffman, Audra (Chris) Dishman, Tony (Crystal) Kjar and Abbie (Kenya) Jones; four great-grandchildren, Taylor and Tim Dishman, Evyn Kjar and Kyren Jones; two brothers, Bob (Delores) Sexson and John (Ardith) Sexson, all of Grant; a brother-in-law, Earl (Dianne) Hoffman of Lakewood, Colorado; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Sexson of Grant; and an aunt, Verna Myers of Clay Center, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Don.

Family inurnment services will be held at the Cozad Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Cozad with Rev. Lyle Schoen officiating.

William Rubenthaler, 74 (1929-2004)
William J. "Bill" Rubenthaler, 74, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was born June 16, 1929, at Gothenburg, to William G. and Florence (Anderson) Rubenthaler. He grew up on their family farm 12 miles northwest of Gothenburg and attended rural School District 161 in Custer County. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1947.
On December 22, 1950, he married Donna Hise. Bill served in the U.S. Army from June of 1951 to May of 1953. He received his basic training at Fort Sill in Oklahoma and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, where he helped with post WWII rebuilding efforts. After his service commitment, the couple made their home on the farm 10 miles northwest of Gothenburg until retiring in 1983. They moved into Gothenburg in 1985. Donna preceded him in death December 13, 1995.
On February 1, 1997, he married Margaret Peterson.
He was an active member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Bill was a member of the American Legion Post #64 of Gothenburg and the Farmers Union. He served as a volunteer driver for the Gothenburg Senior Center and Meals on Wheels and helped with Monday night bingo at the Gothenburg Senior Center.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Gothenburg; four daughters:, Kathy (Mike) Schulz of Daphne, Alabama, Karen (John) Hansen of Lincoln, Pat (Rod) Smallfoot of Englewood, Colorado, and Janet (Fred) Portiner of Norfolk, Nebraska; three step-daughters, all of Gothenburg, Connie (Denny) Bockus, Linda Frickson, and Teri (Stan) Jordan; four sons, Randy (Diane) Rubenthaler of Wichita, Kansas, David (Lyn) Rubenthaler of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Tom (Adeana) Rubenthaler of Gothenburg, and Terry (Lisa) Rubenthaler of Niles, Michigan; 19 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, 13 step-great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nephews and nieces; and a sister, Rosemary (George) Alberts of Gothenburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Donna.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Gothenburg, with Father Donald O'Brien officiating.
Burial will be in the Gothenburg Cemetery with Military Honors by the Gothenburg Honor Guard.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the church.
Visitation will be Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Blase Memorial Chapel.
