Lance Lockhart, age 60 (1944-2004)
Lance Lockhart, 60, of Omaha, Nebraska, died Wednesday, October 20, 2004, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, following a brief illness.
He was born January 10, 1944, at Lexington, Nebraska, to Theodore Arthur and Flora W. (Chester) Lockhart. Lance graduated from Lexington High School with the Class of 1962. He then went on to college at Doane College, graduating with his degree in Mathematics. He taught and coached for two years at Millard High School in Millard. Following his teaching, he worked as a contractor in the Omaha area. In 1973, he and good friend, Jerry Dannehl, went into business together, forming L&D Home Builders in Omaha. The pair built many homes in the Omaha area for approximately 10 years. He then went into business on his own. Lance was an innovator in his building techniques and admired by many area contractors for his building skills. He worked up until his death.
He was united in marriage to Kathleen Arthur in York, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with two children, James and Jennifer. He was then united in marriage to Earlene Hilgen on April 13, 2002, at Las Vegas, Nevada.
Lance loved to exercise and jogged six miles a day. His dedication to running carried over to his daughter, as she excelled at track, even receiving a track scholarship. He loved music, which carried over to his son, James, who to this day has his own band in the Omaha area. He enjoyed entertaining friends, cooking and reading. He was still very close to many of his high school friends and met every year for skiing trips. Lance was fun-loving, quite a jokester and never knew an enemy. He will be so missed by his loving family and many friends.
Survivors include his wife, Earlene Lockhart of Omaha; son, James Lockhart of Omaha; daughter, Jennifer and Scott Ashmore of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two sisters, Teresa and Glenn Lanman of Johnson Lake, Nebraska, and Roberta Reynolds of Desert Hot Springs, California; and two grandchildren, Katelynn and Connor Ashmore of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Flora.
Services were held Monday, October 25, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the Berean Bible Church in Lexington with Pastor Glenn Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Lexington.

Eva Lenz, Cozad, age 85 (1918-2004)
Eva Lenz, 85 of Cozad, Nebraska, died October 20, 2004, at Southview Manor Care Center in Cozad.
She was born November 3, 1918, at Cozad to Louis and Minnie Jorgensen Landercasper. She graduated from Cozad High School and moved to Denver, Colorado, where she worked at Montgomery Wards. She later moved to Hawaii where she worked as a stenographer for the military during the war. She returned to Denver where she owned and operated a bowling alley, a lounge and several restaurants including The Rathskellar, LaPlaza, The Highlander and the Parker Steak House. She moved to Cozad in the early 1990's.
She was baptized in the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include her brother, Dale Landercasper of Cozad; two nephews, Larry (Laurie) Landercasper of Cozad and Jeff (Betty) Landercasper of LaCrescent, Minnesota; and two great-nephews, Sam Landercasper of LaCrescent, Minnesota, and Chris Landercasper of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Barbara Landercasper.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

Phyllis Jane Van Nortwick (1922-2004)
Phyllis Jane Van Nortwick, 81, a former area resident, died October 24, 2004, at Nampa, Idaho.
Phyllis was born to Albert and Hazel Wehmeier on November 6, 1922, in Kearney, Nebraska.
Ed and Phyllis moved to Idaho in the summer of 1958. They lived on Ashland Drive in Boise. Phyllis and Ed had four children, son, Ken (Georgia) Van Nortwick; daughter, Darla K. (Tom) Strong; son, Terry (Linda) Van Nortwick; son, Mark (Pat) Van Nortwick.
Grandma dearly loved her grandchildren. They are Christy (Curtis) Dodge, Rick Strong, John (Jen) Van Nortwick, Amy (Michael) Waite, Angie, Jennifer and Marie Van Nortwick.
She thought she would never live to see any great-grandchildren, but was blessed five times with, Zachary T. Dodge, David and Cloey Lavy, Ella Van Nortwick and Josh Waite. She is also survived by one sister, Doris Collicott of Eugene, Oregon.
Her husband, Edward E. Van Nortwick; and her parents, Albert and Hazel Wehmeier, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 28, 2004, at Cloverdale Funeral Home, with Pastor Russ Steiner officiating.

Ruby C. Schmeeckle, 82 (1922-2004)
Ruby Schmeeckle, 82 of Cozad, Nebraska, died October 24, 2004, at Southview Manor Care Center in Cozad. She was born February 6, 1922, at Cozad to Walter and Frances Kandler Peden. She graduated from Cozad High School in 1939.
On April 3, 1940, she married Dennis Schmeeckle and they made their home on farm sites north of Cozad until 1969, when they moved to Cozad. During her lifetime, she had various jobs which included working at a fabric store for six years.
Survivors include two daughters, Kleone Rowe of North Platte, Nebraska, and Karen (Ray) Marshall of Cozad; a granddaughter, Sondra Kay Marshall of Ogallala, Nebraska; three brothers, Leo Peden of Cozad, Oliver Peden of Kearney, Nebraska, and Darrell Peden of Pensacola, Florida; and a sister, Helen Curtis of Lincoln, Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2000; a son, Lenis; son-in-law, Richard Rowe; two sisters, Betty Cone and Arlene McAdams; and two brothers, Bob and Ernie Peden.
A memorial has been established in her memory.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 28, 2004, at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel in Cozad with Ed Maertens of the Cozad Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Emil J. Schwarz, age 78 (1925-2004)
Emil J. Schwarz, 78, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Sunday, October 24, 2004, at his home in Lexington.
He was born October 25, 1925, in Gosper County, Nebraska, to John Fred and Elizabeth (Schweinhuber) Schwarz. Emil worked for 29 years at Monroe Auto in Cozad, Nebraska. It was an honor for Emil, during WWII, to deliver telegrams to the families of Lexington. He also worked for the flour mills and the City of Lexington as a cemetery worker. Emil retired June 8, 1990.
Emil enjoyed woodworking, drawing and painting. He could always be seen walking or riding his bike around Lexington, he strove to ride or walk at least five miles a day.
Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Alfon and Linda Schwarz of Lexington; nieces and nephews, Alfred and Deborah Schwarz of Elwood, Nebraska, Vickie and Ed Clements of Lexington, Eunice and Tim Cantrell of Beemer, Nebraska, Jim and Pam Schwarz of Lexington, and Lisa Schwarz of Fremont, Nebraska, and many great-nieces and nephews.
Emil was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth; and a nephew, Eric.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, October 28, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington with Rev. Thomas Mullowney officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery at Lexington.

Cindy Daisy Martinez, 7 (1997-2004)
Cindy Daisy Martinez, 7, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Sunday, November 28, 2004, near Odessa, Nebraska, as the result of a motorvehicle accident.
She was born August 3, 1997, at Kearney, Nebraska, to Melchor and Angela (Rivera) Martinez. Cindy was a 2nd grader at Morton Elementary in Lexington.
She was one of those students that "everybody loved." She was always smiling and friendly to the other students and staff. She loved to read and do her studies and always had her work in on time. She was the "shining star" of her family and loved being with her brothers and parents. Cindy enjoyed wearing jewelry and always looking pretty. She also couldn't wait to be with her aunts, uncles and cousins and all other relatives and loved family get-togethers. Cindy's death will leave a terrible void in the life of her family as well as her school family. She will be so missed.
Survivors include her parents, Melchor and Angela Martinez of Lexington; brothers, Rene‚ and Douglas Rivera, both of Lexington; many aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, December 3, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington with Rev. Paul Colling officiating. Burial was in the Overton Cemetery at Overton, Nebraska.
