Viola B. Monter, age 92 (1914-2006)
Viola Monter, 92 of Elwood, Nebraska, died December 19, 2006, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington, Nebraska.
She was born July 1, 1914, northeast of Arapahoe, Nebraska, to Henry and Bertha Hinz Helms. She attended Immanuel Lutheran Parochial School.
On September 17, 1933, she married Reinhold Monter. They made their home on a farm site 8 1/2 miles northeast of Arapahoe. Mr. Monter preceded her in death in 1985 and Viola moved to Elwood that same year.
She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She was a 4-H leader and member of a County Extension Club. Viola enjoyed sewing, quilting and time spent visiting with shut-ins and residents of the care home.
Survivors include a son, Neal (Nancy) Monter of Johnson Lake, Nebraska; four daughters, Phyllis (Bob) Remmenga of Elwood, Janice (William) Magorian of Liberty, Missouri, Marlene (Les) Haussler of Golden, Colorado, and Judith (Holger) Beckmann of Kirkwood, Missouri; three brothers, Ed (Grace) Helms and Clarence (Lois) Helms, all of Arapahoe and Henry (Doris) Helms of Mesa, Arizona; three sisters, Loreen Flicker of Pocatello, Idaho, Ruth McGhghy of Warsaw, Missouri, and Lucilla (Roscoe) Carr of North Platte, Nebraska; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, Lowell and Kurt; two sisters, Bertha Evers and Edna Downing; and a grandson, Stuart Magorian.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, December 22, 2006, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood with Pastor Jeff Ernstmeyer officiating. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery northeast of Arapahoe.

Fern Breeden Dodd, age 81 (1914-2006)
Fern Breeden Dodd, 81, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Wednesday, December 20, 2006, at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.
She was born June 21, 1925, near Tiffin, Missouri, to James L. and Dolly B. (Fiske) Breeden.
Fern grew up and attended school in the Schell City, Missouri, area, graduating from Schell City High School in 1943. She lived in Kansas City for a number of years. In 1956, she and her family moved to Lexington.
In 1960, Fern was employed as a commercial writer at KRVN Radio Station in Lexington, retiring in 1990, from a career spanning more than 30 years.
Survivors include two sons, Steve (Jenny) Dodd of Bellingham, Washington, and Stan (Georgianne) Dodd of Northglenn, Colorado; one daughter, Nancy Ann (Vic) Loose of Lexington; one brother, Jim Breeden of Cozad, Nebraska; one sister, Bonnie McConnell of Elwood, Nebraska; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren with one on the way; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
Services were held Wednesday, December 27, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington with Mr. Dave Thorell officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.

Neven 'Bud' Plantz, 77 (1929-2006)
Neven Oakley 'Bud' Plantz, 77, of North Platte, Nebraska, died Friday, December 22, 2006, at his home in North Platte.
Bud was born May 1, 1929, at Genoa, Nebraska, to Clifford George and Freda Lenore Vogt Plantz. He graduated from Genoa High School in 1947. Bud joined the U.S. Navy on January 6, 1948, and was discharged on December 24, 1951.
Bud married Harriet Jean Nelson on February 19, 1950, in Genoa at Augustana Lutheran Church. After the Navy, Bud worked a year at the Gamble's Store in Hastings, Nebraska, before going to work for the Nebraska State Patrol in North Platte. He was with the State Patrol 30 years and retired as a Captain. He then went to work for the State of Nebraska for 12 years.
Bud was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church and P.R. Halligan Post #163 American Legion.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Albright of Columbus, Nebraska, and Karma and husband Lary Bomberger of Lexington, Nebraska; a son, Greg and wife Karen Plantz of Lolo, Montana; six grandchildren, Allisyn and husband James Becker, Clifford and wife Jaci Plantz, Matthew Albright, Kayla Albright, Zachary Bomberger, and Kelli Bomberger; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin Becker and Peter Becker; two sisters, Connie and husband Darwin Pierson of Genoa, and Joy Hedrick of Rocklin, California; and several nieces, nephews and other family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Harriet; his parents; and a son, Timothy Del Plantz.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 29, 2006, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Glenn Hohlt officiating. Inurnment with Military Honors will be in Ft. McPherson National Cemetery. Cremation was chosen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

Mona Icel Jorgensen, 97 (1909-2006)
Mona Icel Jorgensen, 97, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and formerly of Kearney, Nebraska, and Cozad, Nebraska, died Sunday, December 24, 2006, at her home.
Services will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, December 28, 2006, at the Butherus-Maser-Love Funeral Home in Lincoln with Rev. Pat Norris officiating. Further services will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at the O'Brien - Straatmann - Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. Burial will be in the St. John's Cemetery in Cozad.

She was born April 24, 1909, in Lovonia, Missouri, to Robert Frank and Dora Maude (Martin) Boggs. She was the fourth child of twelve.
She lived in the rural Dawson County area when she married Lloyd William (Bob) Jorgensen on August 31, 1927. Later they lived in Kearney for over 20 years and returned to rural Cozad where they "revived" the family farm. In 1988, they moved to Lincoln.
Mona held various jobs in her lifetime, but was mainly a homemaker, avid reader, gardener of flowers, lover of birds and all nature, and an accomplished artist. Mostly, she cherished her family and friends and faced daily life with a unique sense of humor and compassion.
Survivors include her sons, Keith and wife Darlene Jorgensen of Mission Viejo, California, and Lanny and wife Panda Jean Jorgensen of Tucson, Arizona; daughter, Lana Miller-Wood and husband Ron Wood of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd "Bob" Jorgensen in 1989; son, Harold Dwaine Jorgensen in 1992; grandson, Steven Keith Jorgensen in 2005; her parents, Frank and Maude Boggs; seven sisters; and four brothers.

Meda O. Payne, age 83 (1923-2006)
Meda O. Payne, 83, of Lexington, Nebraska, died suddenly at her home in Lexington, Sunday, December 24, 2006.
She was born May 12, 1923, to William and Lela M. (Bennett) Sheldon at Plattsmouth, Nebraska.
She was united in marriage to Jesse W. Payne on November 20, 1939, at Oshkosh, Nebraska.
The couple lived several places prior to moving to Lexington. They then moved to Overton, Nebraska, and in 1993, returned to Lexington where they lived until their deaths.
Meda enjoyed baking, especially making homemade bread. She loved to read, work on puzzles, garden and enjoyed her flowers. She spent a lot of time canning. She enjoyed being with her large family.
Survivors include two sons, James Payne of Hubbell, Nebraska, and Jerry (Janet) Payne of Tifton, Georgia; six daughters, Arlene Frasu of Yakima, Washington, Sharon (LeRoy) Williams of Gilcrest, Colorado, Helen Bourbon of Lexington, Connie Dorsey of Johnson Lake, Nebraska, LeaAnn (Gene) Snyder of Overton, and Peggy Sue Valles of Missouri; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse in 1998; two sons, Glenn and Ronnie; grandson, Shane; sons-in-law, Jim Bourbon, Doug Pfeiffer and Andy Dorsey; grandson, Mick Payne; and two brothers.
Funeral Service will be held Thursday, December 28, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with Rev. Paul Colling officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.

Vernon Thomsen, age 92 (1915-2007)
Vernon Andrew John 'Tom' Thomsen, 92, of Sutherland, Nebraska, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at Linden Court in North Platte, Nebraska.
He was born May 19, 1915, in Minden, Nebraska, to Herman Sornsen and Mabel Grace Christensen Thomsen. At the age of 5, the family moved to Ingham, Nebraska, where he grew up and graduated from high school at the age of 15. Vernon attended Nebraska Wesylan and graduated from UNL where he played baseball and lettered in 1940. Vernon married Ethel May McNickle on June 8, 1941, in Farnam, Nebraska, in a double ring ceremony with her sister Elaine and Bernie Lindvall. To this union seven children were born.
Vernon went on to teach Voc Ag for two years before being called to serve his country in 1941 during W.W.II where he worked for Army Intelligence. Upon his discharge in 1946, Vernon and Ethel moved to Stratton, Nebraska, where he continued teaching. In 1947 the family moved to Sutherland for 17 years where he started and taught in the Voc Ag and FFA programs at Sutherland High School. During this time he was also Superintendent at Red Willow, Nebraska. The family moved to Hershey and then Chappell, Nebraska, where he was superintendent. While in Chappell, Vernon started and coached the girl's volleyball program. He returned to Sutherland in 1972 to continue working as the superintendent and retired from there in 1980. Vernon then went on to sell insurance for Life Investors and substituted in Hershey and Sutherland.
Vernon had five passions: his family, education, sports, playing cards and having coffee with friends.
He was a member and lay leader of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #208 for 55 years, a charter member of the Lions Club, a life member of the Sutherland Chamber of Commerce, a board member of the Sutherland Senior Center and a member of the American School Administrators. He received an Honorary State Farmer Degree in 1976. Vernon was an avid Husker fan, loved baseball and was the 2001 Grand Marshall of the Sutherland 4th of July Parade.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol (Don) Moore of Tryon, Nebraska, Jan Aden and special friend Gary Phipps of North Platte and Kim (Brian) Miller of Lincoln, Nebraska; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Thomsen of Lexington, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren, Casey (Tricia) Aden, Brandon Aden, Kelli (Jace) Backman, Rod Fisher, Sheila Fisher, Jon Miller, Karlie Miller, Kerri (Tony) Miller, Marty (Les) Griess, Rusty (Jennifer) Moore, Jeff (Rayan) Moore and Justin (Bri) Moore; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Loree Thomsen of Gothenburg, Nebraska; a brother-in-law, Dale (Lola) McNickle of North Platte; and many nieces, nephews and other family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ethel in 2006; his parents; two daughters, Joan Thomsen and Patricia Brown; two sons, Dennis and Kenneth Thomsen; a great-granddaughter, Danika Moore; a brother, Wayne Thomsen; and a sister, Evelyn Dow.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 30, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Sutherland with Pastor Harun Gatobu officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery.

Linda L. Meyer, age 54 (1952-2007)
Linda Meyer, 54, died July 25, 2007, at her home in Cozad, Nebraska.
She was born August 15, 1952, at Hastings, Nebraska, to Delmar and Wilfreda Cochran Bissell. She graduated from Cozad High School in 1972.
On July 15, 1972, she married Grant Meyer at Cozad and they moved to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. The couple returned to Cozad in 1974.
She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene for over 20 years. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband Grant of Cozad; two sons, David (Carrie) Meyer of Cozad and Jeffrey (Shawna) Meyer of Wray, Colorado; a daughter, Sandra Lea (Ray) Bevard of Cozad; her father, Delmar Bissell of Maxwell, Nebraska; two brothers, Ron (Sheila) Bissell of Omaha, Nebraska, and Kenneth Bissell of Cozad; four sisters, Carolyn (Steve) Buss of Cozad, Pam Graves of Browns Summit, North Carolina, Lois (Rod) Underwood of Lexington, Nebraska, and Lesia (Jim) Calvin of Gurley, Nebraska; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Wilfreda; and three sisters, Letha Buss, Catherine and Connie Bissell.

Frank Mach, Sr., age 84 (1922-2007)
Frank Mach, Sr., 84, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died Thursday, July 26, 2007, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Gothenburg.
He was born December 10, 1922, in Custer County, Nebraska, to John and Anna (Hulinsky) Mach.
Frank attended rural school in Custer County and worked on the family farm in the Sargent, Nebraska, area. He then served his country during WWII and upon his discharge returned to Nebraska and was partner in the Mach Brothers Blacksmith Shop in Comstock, Nebraska.
He was united in marriage to Jeanette Brown on January 22, 1955, at Sargent. Following their marriage, Frank worked for many area farmers in Custer County and in 1977, he worked for Monroe's in Cozad until 1984. He then retired and did lawn mower repairs and odd jobs.
Frank loved spending time with his family and family was very important to him. He loved animals and always had a special pet. His most recent favorite was "Brownie." He was a member of Callaway American Legion for over 60 years.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette of Callaway, Nebraska; three sons, Frank, Jr. and Jennifer Mach of Oconto, Nebraska, Bill Mach and Lisa Juel of Lexington, Nebraska, and John and Angie Mach of Gothenburg; three daughters, Fran Hagler of North Platte, Nebraska, Patti and Joe Herndon of Gothenburg, and Lucille and John Kutnink of Cambridge, Nebraska; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three daughters, six brothers and two sisters.
It was Frank's wishes his body be cremated.
There will be a private family inurnment held at a later date at Cottonwood Cemetery at Burwell, Nebraska.
