Jerry Earl Sinor, age 68 (1935 -2003)
Jerry Earl Sinor, 68, of Niwot, Colorado, died July 15, 2003, while on a rafting trip in the Brooks Range of Alaska.
Jerry was born April 26, 1935, in Jenks, Oklahoma, to Floyd Sinor and Arlene Morris Sinor. He moved at a young age and grew up on a farm near Cozad, Nebraska. He received a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of Nebraska, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kansas.
Jerry was married on June 15, 1958, to Donna Maack in Cozad. Jerry worked for many years in the area of rocket fuels with the Rocketdyne Company in California.
In 1974, Mr. Sinor and his family moved to Niwot, where Jerry began working as an engineer in the field of oil shale development. Jerry eventually became a well-known expert in oil shale and alternative clean fuels. He worked with Shell Oil, ARCO, and Cameron Engineers, later Pace Engineers of Denver. In 1985, he started his own consulting business and began publishing two alternative fuel journals. He worked very hard at this business until semi-retiring in 2000.
Jerry was a member of the Niwot United Methodist Church. He was past president of the Niwot Community Association and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Denver Chapter. He loved fishing, hunting, backpacking, skiing, photography and hiking in remote areas throughout the world.
His parents preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of Niwot; one son, Doug (Jenni) Sinor of Lakewood, Colorado; one daughter, Shara (Erik) Johnson of Nederland, Colorado; one grandson, Carson Sinor of Lakewood; three brothers, Bill (Donna) Sinor of Paxton, Nebraska, Morris (Cyndy) Sinor of Southlake, Texas, and Keith (Joline) Sinor of Grand Island, Nebraska; and one sister, Donna (Dan) Nearhood of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Niwot United Methodist Church with the Rev. Matthias Krier officiating. Cremation followed the services.
A memorial has been established by the family for Parkinson's research.

Helen K. Cornine, age 60 (1943-2003)
Helen Cornine, 60, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at her home in Cozad, Nebraska. She was born July 14, 1943, at Kansas City, Missouri, to Chester and Helen Novich Jones. She attended schools at Archie, Missouri, and had lived most of her life in Missouri and Indiana.
On August 25, 1994, she married William "Bill" Cornine. The couple had made their home in Cozad since May 2002. She enjoyed crocheting, cross stitching and sewing.
Survivors include her husband, William "Bill," of Cozad; a step-son, Jeremy Crumb of Sedalia, Missouri; a sister, Georgie Cash of Indiana; a brother, Richard Jones of Harrisonville, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Peggy Braun and Rosalie Miller.
A memorial has been established in her memory.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel in Cozad with Pastor Irwin Edwards of the First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery south of Cozad.

Eva Mae Sandquist, 95 (1907-2003)
Eva Mae Sandquist, 95, of Albany, Oregon, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Lydia's House in the Mennonite Village.
Eva was born December 3, 1907 in Elwood, Nebraska, to parents Alex and Mary May (Lewis) DeFinny. In the first year of her life, she moved to Canada with her parents to Big Valley, Alberta, where her parents had homesteaded land. She attended Ozark School near her home, which her father had helped build. Soon after her father died in the winter of 1918, her mother moved the family back to Elwood where Eva attended Elwood County School and worked home care jobs to help the family.
In 1924, she met her husband, Justus W. Sandquist. After they were married on March 4, 1925, they lived a couple of years on a farm in nearby Bertrand before settling in the Eustis area west of Elwood to raise their family. In 1954, Eva and Justus left their farm and moved north of the Platte River to Lexington, then to Albany in 1959.
Eva was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for many years. She was a good mother who loved her family. She enjoyed playing piano and helping others.
Survivors include her sons Carl J. Sandquist and Wayne A. (Carrol E.) Sandquist, all of Albany; daughters Elvira M. Hall of Oregon City and Orvetta Milgrove of Vancouver, Washington; sister Delores Lee of Milwaukie, Oregon; eleven grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great-grandchildren. Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Justus, in October of 1972, three brothers, two sisters and two granddaughters.
Private graveside services were held Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Willamette Memorial Park.

Sophia A. Block, age 101 (1901-2003)
Sophia Block, 101 of Cozad, died Monday, August 4, 2003, at Southview Manor Care Center in Cozad.
She was born October 9, 1901, near Gothenburg to Henry and Rena Jurgens Buesing and attended rural school.
On October 5, 1921, she married Ulfert J. Block. They resided and farmed north of Cozad and northeast of Gothenburg. In 1957, the couple moved to Cozad. She stayed active babysitting for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery work and quilting.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Gothenburg where she was baptized, confirmed and married.
Survivors include two daughters, Norma Chittenden of Cozad and Rosavawn Porter of Denver, Colorado; three grandchildren, Gary Chittenden of Westbrook, Maine, Karen (Ron) Stear of Cozad and Randy (Regina) Porter of Denver, Colorado; four great-grandchildren, Sarah Chittenden of Exton, Pennsylvania, Jason (Kari) Cover of Aurora and Joshua and Matthew Cover of Kearney; three step-grandchildren of Denver and a sister-in-law, Margaret Buesing of Gothenburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1972; also by five sisters, infant Clara, Ellen Block, Christina Ackerman, Edith Buss and Mabel Nichols; two brothers, Charlie and George and two sons-in-law, Herbert Porter and C. Carol Chittenden.
A memorial has been established in her memory.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2003, at the Zion Lutheran Church north of Gothenburg with Pastor Jeff Ruetten officiating. Burial was in the Gothenburg Cemetery.

Edith E. Dickson, age 92 (1911-2003)
Edith E. Dickson, 92, of Grand Island, Nebraska, formerly of Overton, Nebraska, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Lakeview Nursing Center in Grand Island.
She was born February 17, 1911, at Frederick, Illinois, to Harvey L. and Laura (Krems) Everhart.
Edith attended school at South Sioux City, Nebraska, where she graduated from high school in 1929. She was united in marriage to Fred Dickson on October 27, 1934 at South Sioux City.
The couple was blessed with two daughters, Janice and Diane. Fred and Edith made their home in Overton, Nebraska, where Fred was an engineer and surveyor for Dawson County for over 20 years and Edith worked as his secretary.
She was a member of the Overton United Methodist Church as well as an honorary member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was a 50-plus-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, past Matron of Overton Chapter #278 and past Grand Representative of Minnesota in 1957.
Edith's interests were many. She enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge club, cooking, camping, traveling and golfing with her husband and dancing to Lawrence Welk and country music. She made many beautiful gifts by her talent of crocheting and knitting, which her family truly enjoy and will always cherish. She loved seeing and being with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edith will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her two daughters, Janice Mae (Larry) Streit of Overton, Nebraska, and Diane Elizabeth (Frank) Smutny of Grand Island, Nebraska; eleven grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fred, on July 18, 1992, and one sister, Ethel Bliven.
Services were held Friday, August 8, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the Overton United Methodist Church in Overton with Reverend Cathy Cole officiating.
Memorials are kindly suggested to the Overton United Methodist Church or the Overton Golf Club Maintenance Fund.
Burial was in the Overton Cemetery at Overton.

Gertrude L. Mingus, 84 (1919-2003)
Gertrude L. "Gracie" Mingus, 84, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.
She was born July 1, 1919, at Lexington, Nebraska to Harry and Hazel (Rutledge) Allen.
Gracie attended school at District #7 (north of Lexington), from kindergarten through the 8th grade, having to take an exam in order to enter high school, which was compulsory at that time. She graduated from Lexington High School with the Class of 1937. In September of 1937, she enrolled in the California Beauty School in Omaha, graduating and taking her State Boards in the fall of 1938. She practiced cosmetology in Lexington for 50 years.
She was united in marriage to Maynard Mingus on June 30, 1940, at the United Methodist Church in Lexington. The couple honeymooned in California and Catalina for two weeks, which was "unheard of in those days."
The couple were blessed with two children: Karen Kay and Kenneth Allen. Kenneth preceded her in death in April of 1972.
Gracie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lexington, where she was baptized in 1926. She held offices in 4-H (as a youngster), Eastern Star Lexington Chapter #33, Jobs Daughters, the United Methodist Church, Chapter HV PEO, Tri-County Hospital Auxiliary, the Golden Rod Club as well as the Kensington Club.
She enjoyed family, relatives, friends and neighbors, her many loyal customers, taking care of her home, flowers, cooking, bridge, their cabin at the lake, Christmas and traveling.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Karen Kay and Bob Turechek of Carrollton, Texas; three grandchildren, David and Angie Turechek of Allen, Texas, Troy Turechek of Carrollton, Texas, and Tami Turechek of Carrollton, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Dawson Lane Turechek, Abigail Renee Turechek and Gabriel Kenneth Ross; one sister and brother-in-law, Harriet and David Stork of Ventura, California.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Maynard on July 9, 2003, son, Kenneth, one granddaughter and many relatives and friends.
Services were held Saturday, August 9, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lexington, Nebraska, with Reverend Todd Karges, officiating
Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, the Lexington Volunteer Fire Department or the Lexington Community Foundation.
